Blackie a little vinegar will take that oxidation off the trangia! wally world has those hob's too about 5 bucks a pop when i got them a couple years back!
hehe, the hot beverage cup in your kit reminds me of the very first time i used a tin cup for coffee while camping, i burned my hand and my lips before dropping the cup into the fire :-)
A LOT of good thought went into that system! Excellent info! And thanks for the tip about putting a little fuel into that recessed ring around the outside of the jets to help preheat it. I’ll be trying that!
Blackie my husband a former cold weather soldier bought a Swedish mess kit and a svea with a mini pump For every family member we primarily use the Swedish mess kit but at high altitude real cold or snow survival it’s white gas and the svea keep up the good work
(about "powder creamer" in your M-40) I recommented this video of yours to a british youtuber who needs milk in his tea on a trail. He experimented with a flask containing fresh milk. No option in my opinion, but this product "powder creamer" probably gives him a handy and more practical alternative in the outdoors. Hope he can find it here in europe as well. I personally drink my coffee black. As always thumb up to your video, River Bank Viking
4:59 It’s not just to hang off a horizontal branch over a fire, you can hook it into the latch on the front and in that way, pour liquid out without the mess tin swinging all over the place. Also you can put it in the latch after you’ve closed the clasp bit that’s on the lid, which prevents it opening and also keeps it firmly held in the wind guard, so DON’T take the hook off, it’s very, very handy!😩🤷♂️
you can try kaufmans military surplus in samson al. 334 898 1770 tell them i sent ya and they will hand select for ya they closed today but open 10 to 4 pm mon -fri
I keep a small syringe in the kit to add the fuel around the burner to help it bloom faster.it works very well. Thanks Blackie for sharing your wealth of knowledge with the rest of us. ATB Sam Adler from Vietnam
Blackie, I some times use charcoal or wood to heat the main pot, also Heet gas line antifreeze. My PFM40 is all stainless steel, with a lot of use it ain't shiny no more.
Great video, tips&tricks. We lived w those during my military service in the late 80's in Sweden. One of the guy's learned the hard way not to let ones foxhole buddy refill the burner while it's hot, it turns into a rocket engine and shoots a jet of fire up to a meter (3 feet). He got hit straight on his ear and wore a bandage around his head for a week.
Cracking piece of kit, I’ve had three over the years, still got a stainless one the other two friends really liked and I gave them away, I’ll not be letting my last one go 👍🏻 Great set up/kit you’ve put together by the way Blackie 👍🏻
Blackie thanks much for the m40 tips. I never thought about cutting the reverse side of the stove unit. That tip alone really makes a difference in handling. Ron M
Right out of the box, I did your mod, for the handle on the other side, Blackie. ALSO, what I did with mine, I bored out 4 of the holes, on the same side, and connected 2 holes, on each side, right and left. To use for feeding a fire. Only makes sense. Hope this helps, and gives you some ideas. Have a great day, and safe journeys!!
Well thought out and instructed! The addition of the butterfly handled USGI canteen cup along with the modifications to the windscreen/stove are excellent tips you shared... Thanks!. This is the type of content that keeps me coming back for more. May I dare say it is Doctorate level instruction.
Hi Blackie. Thank you very much. Just bought a Romanian mess kit with a separate Swedish wind shield and was looking at adapting it. You've given me a few really useful ideas.
I’ve watched your previous video on the Swedish Army mess kit and I can categorically say, you are no expert. I can tell from the fact the clasp is riveted on that it’s the aluminium M-44, not the M-40, which is the earlier steel rendition.
Another good one, thanks Blackie. I have an East German Aluminium Mess Kit. I have still never used it lol. I keep coming back to my good ole canteen cup and an old stainless steel frypan.
I've owned a M 40 for about 30 yrs..I just learned cool tips I didn't know..another reason I love this channel..where can I get spare O rings for stove? Thanks!
Was literally going to write the same. Parts of that kit are stainless steel, I can tell by the color. And many types of stainless steel are not magnetic.
In general the 300 series of stainless is non-magnetic. Often called sanitary stainless. The 400 series of stainless will stick to a magnet, and usually a duller color.
@barryduckworth5224 30 years ago, I was on a hospital construction site, and there was a debate going on as to where the non-magnetic stainless electrical outlet plates had to be used and where the magnetic could be used. When you are buying thousands, by the case, the cost added up. O.R. areas and labs had to have them, but the offices and non-sterilized areas didn't have to have them. To me that meant the non-magnetic had better damp environment corrosion resistance. There was a slight color difference between the two. I believe it has to do with the chromium or hexavalent chromium 6 content.
I recently got an unused Russian Mess Kit (pretty much the same as the M40) off ebay recently for less than $35. Now all I need to get is the post stand/wind screen as the Russian ones don't come with one. I also have a Swedisg one, which is pretty much the same design. They're pretty proud of the Swedish M40 as far as prices go these days.
I have an original kit and when SRO came out with theirs in SS I got one of those too. I wanted another cup and found that the Rothco canteen style cup nests nicely inside and I still have room for the alcohol stove, some fuel and miscellaneous stuff. Great kit.
I've just brought a swedish windscreen with a swiss cookset had to cut the slots in the windscreen to allow them to close up for carrying because their the same but different
Seems like you prefer this m40/m44 stove over the trangia 25/27 style stove, would love you to elaborate why and pros/cons. Thank you for your great videos cheers
A Swede here. Yeah I have one of those but I usually use my Trangia. Last year I bought a smaller version, the mini. Looking forward of using it in a couple of weeks :)
I must modify my windshield like you have Blackie. Just about to pick up the issue aluminium pot. I have a Miltec copy at the moment, which is it not bad but lacks the hook and D-rings. I added my own as the ring slots are on the copy. Great set I’m getting a second one for the kids. My favorite for a camp set and might add a usgi or crusader mug instead of the kasa I have in it currently. Thanks for the tips Blackie.
Ingenious. I have almost all that stuff already. I could put that kit together tomorrow. I do not have the oval Swedish mess tin, though. I have a Swiss, East & West German, Hungarian, Early and Late Italian.mess tins. and a Swedish 'chimney'. I need to resolder the lid on my Swedish Crown Issue Svea spirit burrner so that guy's out, but the small Trangia burner [or clone] I can fit in the Wildo cup. The US GI VN Canteen Cup in SS or French aluminum butterfly cup, also fits US mid '40s metal canteens. [French one has indents in the sides to set a 2 finger wine ration level.] I use the Trangia pot gripper. For a grid over the 2 bales I have a 4.5'' square heat diffusser off a Soviet era Prymus PT-1 Touristnik [Opti 8R clone]. . I can set a US or allied canteen cup on it. I could add a lid for the canteen cup. KFS is covered. The whole works could fit into any European military bread bag.
4:30 If you keep using it as a twig stove, the aluminium will go the colour of copper and soften considerably, it ruins them. Don’t be tempted unless you have a good supply of replacements!
some are non magnetic stainless (roughly equivalent to 316). my kit contains a thin (3-4mm) piece of wood that I cut to fit inside my windbreak (just tight enough to prevent rattling), I use that to keep burner of the snow and wet ground.
I have been an avid user of my Swedish m40 since I found it at the local surplus store in 1999. Lately I have been thinking of retiring it in favor of the S.R.O stainless version, any thoughts or considerations. I would be using the Svea spirit burner that came with Swedish set, modern ones are smaller and hold much less fuel.
That's an awesome set up Blackie! You had mentioned that since it's aluminum that it'll melt/warp due to high heat. Is that the same for the stainless version that sro sells? I don't think so but I just want to make sure because I am very interested in purchasing one of the m40 cook sets. Thank you.
That is correct never put the aluminum one on a hot fire empty.. with water or stew is fine give the heat someplace to go but empty it can melt in high temps the stainless steel sro would be just fine
Blackie, Thank You for Sharing on the M-40 Swedish Mess Kit. Great Information Tips and Tricks, Thank You Sir for all you do and sharing your time and knowledge and wisdom and experience. God Bless.

Glad you liked it!!
I have an m40 on the way . Great video .👍
hehe, the hot beverage cup in your kit reminds me of the very first time i used a tin cup for coffee while camping, i burned my hand and my lips before dropping the cup into the fire :-)
Every time I watch one of your videos I wish I could find a scout master hat like yours.
lol thanks
I’ve found two on the FB market place in the past year. Both were new
Making use of every little fraction of space. I like it.

Hi from the UK🇬🇧 and Blackie you made my day with that wonderful, “cowboy,” accent with whistling lisp to boot. Fab’!😄
Hi Blackie, greeting from Australia 🇦🇺, thank you for your time to make these videos, muchly appreciated thank you.
Glad you like them!

just ordered one of the SRO m40.. looking forward. been watching your differnet videos to figure out how to best set it up. Loving your stuff sir.
Great video, Blackie. I liked the mods and the tip on lighting the outside of the alcohol stove.

No problem 👍
Pot black stove paint works well over here in the UK !
Great content
Some very handy tips
For the eating utensils I reckon you should try the Germany army utensils 👍
Great video brother I have a german mess kit that was givin to me when I was in the army and attached to a german army unit in the 80s love it
very cool
The best kit thus far
thanks
Good stuff brother. Very good

Nice set up Blackie .. I’ve got the sro model and have been laying up to remove that annoying hook myself
Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
glad to do it
7:40 Yep, as I said before, if you stick it in a fire it will go copper coloured and eventually, you can bend it almost as if it was foil!😩🤷♂️🧐
I recently got the pathfinder edition. Thanks for the tips

I gave up trying to find an original Swedish M-40 and got a SRO. Thanks for the video and tips. I like the canteen cup in the main pot. Great idea!👍👍
They are out there but they are expensive. I waited and got the SRO
the SRO is a great choice
Great job. I have the same kit. I’ll definitely use some of the tricks. I just ordered the pathfinder stainless version to try. Mike from Mississippi

I bought the SRO version and wondering where this has been all my life. Now I need to get another canteen cup to add to it. Thanks for the tip.

Amazon sells a Rothco canteen style cup that nests great in the SRO SS set. 👍

Lol, i love the magnet proof😂. I dont doubt that your set is aluminum but most of your food grade stainless steels are not ferrous (ie: not magnetic)
S.M.K.W. is a experience 😂
i hope to go there one day
Hi Blackie, why haven't you got the military burner?
There is a simmer ring that fits it, I can't think who make it at the moment
Tatonka make a simmer ring for their own spirit burner that also fits the Trangia military burner
