Great teaching video Blackie... you have a gift for passing on your knowledge.... this and other videos like it will become required watching for my grandkids who I am trying to teach my old hillbilly ways. So much of this stuff was common knowledge when I was a kid. It was how we lived in the hills of KY and VA. Now it is quickly becoming all but lost.
great vid, thanks for sticking to the points and including an appropriate amount of redundancy (for my walnut sized brain, anyway). it's especially refreshing that you take the utilitarian perspective ("this is supposed to be fun"). i know some folks like to suffer for the delayed rush it gives them, but i have aged out of that nonsense. the magnifying lens is the coolest tip - as you said, no impact on precious resources in the kit. i look forward to checking out more of your videos.

I also carry "fireballs" (cotton balls covered in Vaseline) in plastic pill bottles in my fire kit. BTW bandages and dressings also serve as Tinder. And I always carry a lighter and small ferro rod on my person in case I'm separated from my kit

I carry my main kit usually in a haver type bag, but also have one in my backpack and a small one in my fishing gear. One thing I've added in each one, though is a small folding knife. I do like redundancy.
great video blackie practice everything till you get it second nature to do it lots of ppl don't understand this concept and I always carry dry tinder it was raining here for 3 weeks stuff is still soaked well atb ....Tom

i bought a 1/2"x6" ferro rod blank , drilled a piece of fatwood and epoxied the rod in it . tinder and ferro rod in one package . those oval tinder tins are cool , where do you get them ? Blackie , you have 5 , lighter,ferro rod ,matches , flint and steel , mag lens . Clipper butane lighters are great . refillable and the flint can be replaced great stuff Blackie , thanks for the share .
Could you tell me what brand ferrocerium rods you show using -- the blanks that you added paracord to? I've sent away twice and don't think they are really dpendable/good ones.

+James Hildebrand they can be of use..but to be honest..i find them a poor fire rod and a lot of work to shave down a pile of shavings..if i use fat wood i can make good shavings and they ignite with a spark same as the bar..but the bar shavings burn very rapidly..the best i can tell you is get one and see if it fits your style..safe journeys

I carry kerosene (tiki torch fuel) in a little bottle, vaseline cotton balls, and then i don't need a flame producing fire starter. i still carry both a lighter and matches, but those fuels really are great. I go overkill with fire in all honesty but i never have to worry about fire because I'm in the desert haha
I'm a smoker in Canada and I can attest that there are no conditions under which a Bic lighter will not ignite. Also, carry pine or spruce gum if you can get it. You can burn the world down with one small piece.

A few alcohol prep pads added to a kit will produce a flame from a spark, and they are individually packed in a waterproof envelopes.

A 9 volt battery and steel wool is a quick and easy way for beginners to get a fire for sure. Steel wool lights up super easy with a ferro rod also.
