My main problem with this sort of system is concerns with the plastic ending up in the food. In hydroponic systems even the pipes are usually plastic. Over time there may be some amount of that plastic that ends up in the food.
And also clay pebbles are full of aluminium and probably other toxic metals. If the plant you are growing is a biomediator, meaning it absorps all minerals not just the ones it needs, you're gonna have very toxic salads... I've been looking into hydroponics since 2 years but so far I am still growing organic, perhaps someone will convince me one day but not so far
@@vikramkoodoye1418 Yes you got electricity bills for pumps, airstones, heaters, you need PH- or PH+ and relatively expensive nutrients. Charles, your enthusiasm and positivity are infectious. I have a traditional garden box setup, but you've inspired me to reconfigure it. Thank you for doing what you do and making positive changes in the world.
Be careful with that. I heard that company's that sell seeds can take you to court and sue you if they find out that you are selling fruit or vegetables from their strand of seeds. Which sounds hella crazy to me.
That's for GMO seeds. Remember Monsanto, the giant seed company that was getting a lot of bad publicity a decade ago? They merged with Bayer a few years ago, but that's the only company that's going to sue you for reselling their products. Average gardeners can't get their hands on Monsanto seed so that's not something you or I or this guy need to worry about.
living in Twentynine Palms Ca. some years ago I lived in a subsidized elderly handicapped living community. They decided to try to make gardens behind the community. Each unit that wanted could have a small garden . I was a caregiver for my mom and a coupe other people. they did not want their plots so I had 4 plots in the desert. Someone brought in "soil" it was tree bark mulch with did not absorb any water and had very little nutrients. I grew up in Pennsylvania on a Dutch farm so I knew about natural fertilizers and way to make the soil better. What I did was go to a lumber yard / hardware store and asked if they had saw dust. and I went to another store and asked what they did with old vegetables and meat, and they were surprised when I offered to buy their scraps and garbage from them. in the end I mixed sawdust, horse manure and wood ash and fish fertilizer together along with the local sand there to create a better soil. It worked, I learned to water before and after sunset and sunup, only transplant at night , and slow watering that soaked in was the best. I was able to grow gourds, parsley red beets onions, okra sweet peppers, turnips and carrots squash and much more. Since then I have delved into many ways of gardening. I live n a city and am currently looking for a place I can afford so I can grow my own food, but I do wild foraging in the woods and mountains here.
thanks for the motivation to get my own business started. i haven't done it yet but this video coming across my youtube feed is a blessing. Charles has put things into perspective for me that you don't need a huge amount of money to get your idea moving in the right direction. THANK YOU !!!!
I just moved to the middle of nowhere in Texas - it’s sandy and I grew up in an area where it’s rich dirt and clay underneath. This is going into my favorite videos, thanks so much for the info!
I remember a guy named Larry years ago doing all this with the old walmart woven bags, I did his kiddie pool method and planted tomatoes, peppers and lettuce and I couldn't eat it fast enough.
❤ Try perpetual spinach. I'm not sure how well it will work in your systems. I am a very very lazy gardener. Perpetual spinach is right up there for me with tomatoes. I only have to plant at once every two years. It overwinters here in zone 8a with minimal protection and the seed production is just phenomenal Nice content thank you
Glad to hear you're interested! There are some great techniques you can use to start your own backyard garden that can definitely reduce those grocery bills while providing fresh produce for your family. 🙌
I do not believe he started with $45. Soil, seeds, containers, etc, and many other things you need cost a lot more than $45. But the system he is running looks very good.
Charles Collins has a lot to teach us! He’s a real expert and has awesome energy.. He mentioned difficulty growing spinach.. I wonder why? Also, The host asks great questions and does a wonderful job. Glad I found this channel
Inspirational! This is how why grow back to the backyard garden! Sustainable and healthy gardening. Knowledge is power and people need these tools to get back to gardening and healthy eating. Instead of posting ridiculousness on social media! Gardening helps with mental health and healthy eating! Teaching a person to plant they can eat for days to combat the inflation food prices! Keep up the good work Charles!
I van see him doing one of those miniature "lands" like Disneyland has, where you see the little train run on a track around a miniature land, only it's his RCs and he grows certain produce to look like trees and vegetation for his RC mini land. ❤❤❤ As far as the aquaponics, ive been wanting to do this for years!!!

I just started my indoor garden and look to sharing my first harvest. I enjoyed watching this episode as it is opening my eyes to what to grow and who to sell my harvests to.
I love watching your video, I have 4000 sq ft of empty backyard, can't afford any landscaping, and i love gardening, so maybe i try this. Thanks you inspired me.
Look up permaculture too Ester....low maintenance gardens that recycle all your waste...weeds paper etc...using very little to grow food and upcycle waste materials...wishing you the best in your growing journey...🙏💚🌱🌳😁
What a nice guy! I got a ready to go hydroponics system for my veggies off the shelf more than a decade ago in holland. Some farms here are growing like this too.
This is very interesting and exciting. I am so into this. The only suggestion I would make is please put that fish in a larger tank. There is nowhere for it to properly swim or live a good life. If you are going to use animals in any capacity, you should always make sure they have a quality of life.
Because it is a farm setting, the time they will spend there is only as long as it takes to get to full size, then I am under the impression they get eaten or sold, so yes there is some discomfort but it is short lived.
I know about aquaponics, I had a system in my country. I would like to do it here in the United States, but I am undocumented. In Ecuador I produced lettuce, basil, chard and also microgreens.
That's incredible! Keep exploring and connecting with people in the field-you never know where opportunities may come from. Your experience could be a real asset in the future! 🌱
I really enjoyed the production and enthusiasm for furthering sustainable gardening. I would have liked to hear more about dealing with failures because they can really take the wind out of your sails, not to mention breeding skepticism in the people who you take on this journey.
There is no way to make 10k , if you sell $1 lettuce head you have to produce 10000 lettuce heads that take 90 days to be ready so you have to have space for 30000 heads of lettuce, everything great but cost more than you think
5:40 Actually, he's saying harvest the LEAVES. 1 plant can provide the same amount of leaves as 7-14 heads of lettuce. You can harvest mature leaves, while allowing the plant to continue growing.
Thank you very much for this discovery. I still need a few months to complete the construction of my wooden house, but then I will tackle the garden and I will take inspiration from what you show to see if I can recreate a mini environment under the house in the crawl space , to be protected from climatic events.
I love the concept but all the profit and low time input talk is highly misleading. You would spend lots of hours trying to find customers. Grocery stores are not buying pdroduce from non businesses due to the liability, and random neighbors are not dropping $5 a pop for some lettuce.
Neighbors aren't random if you socialize with them as well. Grocery stores would definitely not buy from these people unless if they had probably 10x product since people are always buying from stores.
I am a former Produce Manager ...look at the cost of salads in your grocery store (not on sale), the size of them....or packaged lettuce mixes; spinach, kale, arugula....
Due the quantity you can grow on that size of land, you probably need acces to farmers markets when the produce is organic. I doubt that you can become a supplier even for small supermarkets as you probably won't be able to constantly supply the quantity required.
How about God First!!! Your Spiritual self is most important, before anything else! As a farmer, i did learn some valuable information and i thank you and God for putting you on my path today!!!❤❤❤
You can also implement hydroponics in terrariums in your apartment . All the plants need is sunlight and you check the plant once every 3 months if needed . In a closed terrarium , a fruit or vegetable plant will continually grow for up to 2.5 years if maintained properly . Due to the closed system of the terrarium , the plants will form a independent ecosystem in a closed environment
"Your energy is infectious" ❤ my sentiment exactly! He's so excited and open. He may be onto something with the RC cars. If I could find a way to include drones into the gardening, then my husband would definitely help.

Completely omits power consumption for pumps to run etc 😅
@@vikramkoodoye1418 Yes you got electricity bills for pumps, airstones, heaters, you need PH- or PH+ and relatively expensive nutrients.
Also the produce is quite sterile and the plants have much less bacteria of which many are beneficial to our gut.
You do get faster growth, bigger plants, it's probably better for business but since I grow just for myself and my family that's not relevant...
@@stepper8584 growing organic? where did u get those "organic" seeds... they aint organic... its marketing scheme... Your soil has prob. absorb bunch of heavy metals.. This is your way of thinking if applied to your own set up
use all copper piping and materials, the irrigation for farms and gardens are also made of plastic
Imagine combining this with mushroom farming, microgreens and saffron production. There are ways to contribute and also make money. Just takes effort!
I had this exact same idea 5 years ago during the last crisis in my country and you are executing it you genius (food waste program included). It looks incredible congratulations you are the (right) man doing the right thing
Amazing. I love realistic, non-misleading, factual videos like this. Great work!! Changed my mind in gardening completely :)
First time I have heard of using UV in aquaponics and I am blown away.
It's incredible, right? Using UV in aquaponics can significantly improve water quality and plant health.
All UV does is kill water Bourne bacteria nothing more. THE WATER LESS BACTERIA NOTHING MORE. IF YOU HAVE BAD WATER YOU MAY HAVE BAD RESULTS
I love how clearly and straightforward he explains everything :)
I'm glad you found the explanation clear! Clarity is key when diving into something as exciting as NASA secrets! 😉
Together We Grow, that's Charles' YT channel
It is! We hope you enjoyed the video- thank you for watching! ☺️
@@UpFlip yeah i did. And thank you for posting great contents
Important , real and awesome information. If everyone had a garden and a smile, the world would be a better place.
BELOVED BEAUTIFUL SOULS ALWAYS MAKES AMAZING DISCOVERIES...CHARLES IS SO AMAZING I FEEL LIKE I WANT TO RUN AWAY FROM ENGLAND AND GO LEARN THIS SYSTEM FOR 3 MONTHS
Charles truly is inspiring! If you ever get the chance to dive into this system, it sounds like it would be an incredible journey. 🌟
Two great people on the stage ; One asking the questions , the other answering like an AI machine . Great stuff
We're glad you enjoyed the exchange! Thanks for watching! ☺️
"Well I see it, and it's growing right in front of my eyes..." I have to admit, somebody at my shows started cutting up onions for a minute there because I totally didn't start to cry from how sweet and inspirational that was...
Charles, your enthusiasm and positivity are infectious. I have a traditional garden box setup, but you've inspired me to reconfigure it. Thank you for doing what you do and making positive changes in the world.
Growing is easy in Arizona ! Low humidity, lots of sun and no frost. Add on hydro as a grow method and you're using a fraction of the water.
Bro, what is Hydro as a grow method ?
That's awesome! Thanks for sharing! 🌞
Been following Charles & his movement for the last several years now. Very proud of him, his family & his community. God Bless. 🙏
Be careful with that. I heard that company's that sell seeds can take you to court and sue you if they find out that you are selling fruit or vegetables from their strand of seeds. Which sounds hella crazy to me.
Gotta love america right?
what the fuck
That’s crazy!!
How would they ever find out lol
living in Twentynine Palms Ca. some years ago I lived in a subsidized elderly handicapped living community. I live n a city and am currently looking for a place I can afford so I can grow my own food, but I do wild foraging in the woods and mountains here.
viel Glück auf dem Weg
what about the micro plastics from the bottles?
thanks for the motivation to get my own business started. i haven't done it yet but this video coming across my youtube feed is a blessing. Charles has put things into perspective for me that you don't need a huge amount of money to get your idea moving in the right direction. THANK YOU !!!!
Glad this video resonated with you! We hope you make your dream a reality. 🙏
I freakin like this guy and his smile!
We do too! Appreciate the support! ☺️
This guy's a hippie but with absolutely zero BS, just gets straight to the point and gives it to you straight. What a great combo.
He's all about the truth and straight talk-no need for fluff! 🙌
I just moved to the middle of nowhere in Texas - it’s sandy and I grew up in an area where it’s rich dirt and clay underneath.
This is going into my favorite videos, thanks so much for the info!
Right on! I love this. I live on a farm and find this inspirational. Its nice to meet both of you🌿💫
That's wonderful to hear! Living on a farm must give you such a unique perspective. 🌱
This is exactly what I have been thinking about for my community! Thank you for your ideas and inspiration!!❤😊
So cool to see that he's doing well with his gardening.
It’s definitely inspiring to see his success! Makes you want to grab some seeds and start planting, right? 🌱
This guy's passion's intoxicating. Great video.
Come on Chuck! Can’t wait to see it! Be there soon!
So glad you're excited! I hope you find this video super valuable!
It overwinters here in zone 8a with minimal protection and the seed production is just phenomenal
Nice content thank you
Wow sounds like a game-changer for low-maintenance gardening! Thanks for sharing your tip and for watching the content; glad you enjoyed it!
research oxalates, lectins and the damage they do to our bodies

Very interested in this.
More on the side of how I can do this for my family and just bypass Publix or Walmart.
Glad to hear you're interested! There are some great techniques you can use to start your own backyard garden that can definitely reduce those grocery bills while providing fresh produce for your family. 🙌
There are some companies doing this worldwide. One is in north dakota and they grow cabbage.
Love his channel! Also glad to see growing included, and aquaponics at that!
As far as the aquaponics, ive been wanting to do this for years!!!
We are a small nonprofit and are going to launch a youth Urban Farm and Bike Repair Program and this is so inspiring! I knew there was a business angle to urban farming but we just wanted to work on the food desert problem and transportation! Thank you for this awesome report!

The business advice. Pure gems ❤❤❤
It would have been great to actually learn the how to get this system going for myself. More of the mechanics and prep to get started.
Hi!
@@togetherwegrow8340 you should do a YT video about it
Thanks for the feedback! Charles is doing more of that on his channel! 🌱
Thanks for sharing your perspective! We appreciate you tuning in. 🐟
He is such a great interview and a master at frugality.
I know about aquaponics, I had a system in my country. I would like to do it here in the United States, but I am undocumented. In Ecuador I produced lettuce, basil, chard and also microgreens.
you can do it even with no documents...
My business partner has owned his own business since 2007. He has no documents.
That's incredible! Keep exploring and connecting with people in the field-you never know where opportunities may come from. Your experience could be a real asset in the future! 🌱
@@UpFlip I live in New Jersey, currently renting rooms and gardening during the seasons.
the world needs more people like this! so inspiring!
This is the video needed lol exactly 1 day after I subbed here. Thanks life hahaahhaha
Timing is everything!
Yes 🎯
Where can you buy a head of lettuce for $1?
@@OrionsFannypack Aldi
5:40 Actually, he's saying harvest the LEAVES. 1 plant can provide the same amount of leaves as 7-14 heads of lettuce. You can harvest mature leaves, while allowing the plant to continue growing.
Small independent grocery stores are charging $2 a head.
Thank you very much for this discovery. I still need a few months to complete the construction of my wooden house, but then I will tackle the garden and I will take inspiration from what you show to see if I can recreate a mini environment under the house in the crawl space , to be protected from climatic events.
I am a farmer, both traditional and aquaponic. It's hard to reach this kind of profit in the vegetable farming industries, just saying 😊
You're right, it takes a lot of dedication and hustle! Thanks for sharing your experience. 🙏
Exactly
One of the best episodes yet!❤
I love the concept but all the profit and low time input talk is highly misleading. You would spend lots of hours trying to find customers. Grocery stores are not buying pdroduce from non businesses due to the liability, and random neighbors are not dropping $5 a pop for some lettuce.
This is why you need to know a few people that you know would buy your things before starting a business
Neighbors aren't random if you socialize with them as well. Grocery stores would definitely not buy from these people unless if they had probably 10x product since people are always buying from stores.
"Competition are your friends". Best line out of this.
Do people actually buy salad for 5 dollar? Genuine question. Where does he sell it? How much is the weight of a 5 dollar salad?
I am a former Produce Manager ...look at the cost of salads in your grocery store (not on sale), the size of them....or packaged lettuce mixes; spinach, kale, arugula....
Due the quantity you can grow on that size of land, you probably need acces to farmers markets when the produce is organic. I doubt that you can become a supplier even for small supermarkets as you probably won't be able to constantly supply the quantity required.
Charles you are amazing! Love your energy, passion, sense of community.
How about God First!!!
Your Spiritual self is most important, before anything else!
As a farmer, i did learn some valuable information and i thank you and God for putting you on my path today!!!❤❤❤
Amen!!
@tutuwahine what does that have to do with the video information?
Glad 'god' is working for you, but most of us have outgrown the need for one.
Love to see Charles again.
Right! Hope you discovered something new from him today!
He's got a contagious passion that makes you want to jump in and learn. 🪴
