      +Drachenfang I finished a few of my paper mache sculptures for indoor decor! I would love to send you a pic, but not sure how to do that. I did a wicked witch, the predator, and an evil pumpkin (my daughter helped with that one) :)

    Excellent instructions. Clear and concise. Had you used a stirring stick to see if resin was down in the bottom of the can? I find that it settles over time.

      some viewers were kind enough to inform me to use a stirrer and never shake up spar varnish. I have since taken their advice to heart.

    You mentioned that it is possibly a pain in the rear to get the stem and inside done. I was going to suggest pouring some in and swirling it, but you already hit that one. Lol. But also, to do the stem, you could first dip it in a bowl/cup/bucket of sealer, then use the runs or drips as you would normally.on the outside. :)

    • @Drachenfang
      @Drachenfang  4 роки тому +1

      True. the stem is ideally positioned for a full immersion into sealer if it is not too elaborate. I am revising how I do all my stuff presently so we'll see what happens with stem methods.

    Wonder if you could put the varnish stuff in a spray bottle to do the inside. Seems you wouldn't need to get as precise on the inside. Yes, no?

    • @Drachenfang
      @Drachenfang  7 років тому

      The varnish that I use is too thick to go into a sprayer and if you gave it any time to dry you'd never be able to use that sprayer again.

    • @Drachenfang
      @Drachenfang  7 років тому

      Though that's why I use the beach ball form now too. The insides are nice, smooth, and easy to paint.

    I have a HVLP spray gun. Any reason I can't use it for the varnish? I know I'd have to remove drips but I also know it won't miss any little crevices.

    • @Drachenfang
      @Drachenfang  4 роки тому

      Do what you've gotta do. I have no experience with spray guns apart from air brushes. I'd just remind you to make sure that stuff never dries and clogs in there but I am betting you are already well aware of that.

    Great video!Thank you for being so yarrou in this series!!! (Yarrou = Diligent) Question... Is it okay to use Spar Urethane? I went to 3 different hardware stores in my are and none of them had spar varnish. I picked up Spar Urethane instead. Think it will hold up?

    • @Drachenfang
      @Drachenfang  7 років тому

      Spar Urethane should be fine. It's more or less the same stuff and serves mostly to keep the UV off of the paint. Glad you enjoyed the videos :)

    Have you ever used spar urethane ??? Do you think it will react the same... I guess my biggest concern is if the paint will adhere to urethane the same way as the varnish ( I really just don't want to have to go back to the store...lol )

    I am making an outdoor model of the solar system for my college and used paper mache for its construction so far. Your method is the best I've seen so far. Can I use the spar varnish directly on the paper mache itself or do I need to apply the glue/brown paper towel covering first? Also, how does the spar Varnish hold up against exposure to the sun?

      هر دو یک پوشش هستند. روکش اسپار وارنیش نامیده می شود و برای ضد آب بودن پروژه و محافظت از سطح در برابر خراش استفاده می شود. در طرح های جدیدتر من فقط بعد از رنگ آمیزی کدو تنبل از آن به عنوان کت نهایی استفاده می کنم. همچنین درد بیرونی را از اشعه ماوراء بنفش و سفید شدن خورشید در امان نگه می دارد

    Did you know that you should never SHAKE varnish. It's ok for paint but not varnish. If you need to mix pigment color in your varnish, use a stir stick put into the varnish to the bottom then lift up the stir sticks and let the liquid flow off the stir stick. Never shake, you're adding air bubbles too.

    • @Drachenfang

    I love your pumpkins and have been devouring your videos! I noticed for the sealing step that you are using gloss sealer. Have you used a matte sealer? Any perspective on matte vs. gloss in durability, or do you prefer the shine?

    Hi !!! Hope u doing well. Still love all of ur videos here and on fb 😍 I have left 2 of my pumpkins outside since 2 weeks thinking they would survive in any weather conditions but I was wrong when I tried to press it to see if it’s still hard, it felt kinda soft like Rice Krispie😳🥴does it mean I miss some spots when I painted over the varnish?? Ughhh 😩😣

    • @Drachenfang
      @Drachenfang  4 роки тому

      Thanks. Water can seep in from any break in the varnish which is why I am always paranoid about leaving them outside. If you give it time to dry out then it should be ok. If you're looking to make it completely waterproof then let it dry 200% then give it another complete coat of varnish and make sure you get every little nook and cranny.

    • @melissab2112
      @melissab2112 4 роки тому

      Drachenfang I left them outdoor because the varnish I have is for exterior paint I wasnt sure if it could cause the lingering odor indoor? ☠️

    The guys at Lowes said you can't paint over the spar varnish. That the paint won't stick to it. So how does it work for you? Also they didn't have the brand you use. They said to use mini wax. So does it matter what kind of spar varnish you use? Also do you use the varnish only when you use the brown paper, or do you use it if you just do the paper clay?

    • @Drachenfang
      @Drachenfang  9 років тому +1

      +Patricia Jones I find their lack of faith... disturbing. I have never had a problem with it personally and I've found my black enamel goes on it with no trouble at all. You can get away with most outdoor waterproofers really. I'm just paranoid and spar varnish is the best stuff as far as I am concerned. You could get away with some sort of urethane sealer too. I seal with spar varnish no matter if I am skinning it or not. It has to be sealed against moisture.

    what would spray paint do to paper mache?

      what i meant was when you spray paint styrofoam it destroys it if it does't have a hard coat over it
      will a similar thing happen to the paper?

    I'm looking forward to making one of these. I would like to leave it outdoors permanently as it will be the head for a 6ft pumpkin monster. Would you feel confident the finished product will hold up to the elements?

    • @Drachenfang
      @Drachenfang  6 років тому +1

      I'm paranoid about water sealing so would not leave them outside unless I knew someone who worked in a pickup truck spray on bed liner facility who could completely coat these things. However Scott Stoll of the Stolloween website leaves his creations outside for the full month of October so if you seal it well enough you probably can keep it out there.

    • @ravingstarre

    Is there a reason you varnish before painting? I've been making these for years, wrong mostly lol, but they still look great. Started with the Stolloween website but I always rush through. I've been watching all your steps and you have the patience of a saint. I also learned a lot of new tricks. Thanks for doing this. It's a great tutorial.

    • @Drachenfang
      @Drachenfang  7 років тому +8

      I'm glad you found it useful. I varnish before painting because I am paranoid about water sealing and that's about the only reason. That way I know that if the surface paint gets chipped or scratched there's still a layer of waterproofing below it.

  • @joannegee1650
    @joannegee1650 9 років тому +1

    What if you do not intend to put the pumpkin outside? Do you still have to seal it to the waterproofing stage or does painting it good enough for protection against mildew etc.?

    • @Drachenfang
      @Drachenfang  9 років тому +1

      +Joanne Gennarella If it's not going outside then the paint should be more than adequate. I would still use a matte spray varnish on it (particularly the bottom) just to guard the paint job against scuffs and scratches.

    • @trevorgronning6542
      @trevorgronning6542 9 років тому

      +Drachenfang If I make one of these to wear on my head, will I be able to breathe? Or will it be like breathing in varnish all day? If it would be like breathing in varnish, what do you recommend instead to seal it so I won't die of toxic fumes?

    • @Drachenfang
      @Drachenfang  9 років тому

      +Trevor Gronning The varnish should only make lots of fumes while drying. When it is completely 100% dry after about 72 hours you should notice a huge reduction in fumes. If you're worried then just use an aerosol clear coat. It won't be as waterproof but you shouldn't get fumes when it's dry.

    How long does it take the varnish to dry.

    • @Drachenfang
      @Drachenfang  10 років тому

      I give it overnight. 6-8 hours at least with a fan on it depending on local humidity to be completely dry. It doesn't pay to chance it with spar varnish as it just gets really sticky in its 'almost dry' phases.

    Do you put paper clay inside the pumpkin to cover up the hot glue? or is it fine to leave the hot glue holding the steam, when putting in the Initial Seal and Base Priming?

    • @Drachenfang
      @Drachenfang  7 років тому

      I usually just paint over it and call it good. The only reason to paper clay over it is if you are worried that it is flimsy in any way which should never be a problem once the stem is completed.
