    I am 67 now. In second grade, we made Christmas tree balls in school, covering penny balloons with paper mache. The recipe was flour and water. My mom kept it and hung it on every tree we had in a bottom branch because it weighed about a pound, but it was indestructible. One of my sisters has it and it has been almost sixty years. Still looks new.

    When I was a kid I couldn't find any flour but I found a few bags of white powder in my pops drawer which worked just fine. I made a mask with a big smiley face. It looked real happy. I never owned up to pops but he wasn't smiling for quite a while..

    People always say just 2 ingredients, but fail to pass on the actual magic, which is activating the gluten which makes the flour sticky.
    Take 2 cups of water, pour half of it into a pot bring it to a boil. In the meatime, mix half a cup of flour into the remaining cold water. Once your water is boiling, add a tablespoon of vinegar, or salt, or both. Whisk in the cold flour mixture, constantly stirring, and bring it back to a boil, and then shut it off and remove from the burner.
    Yes, unheated works, but heating causes it to become super sticky.
    I always find salt feels nasty on my hands, so i use a tablespoon of vinegar instead to ward off mold. I find it has a longer shelf life too. The vinegar makes the mixture kind of plastic-like. No vinegar and the flour mixture flakes and crumbles from you hands.. Vinegar and it kind of rolls into little boogers.
    Anyway, i bought wood glue a few years back due to your advice here and have still yet to try it.. I can't seem to find much sculpting time!
    Anything I've made (without the wood glue) definitely doesn't hold up outdoors.

    Thanks for all your information. And all the various recipes for paper mache. I made a huge 9-foot Halloween 🎃 spooky tree outta paper mache with flour, water, salt and didn't properly store it in the garage since last October. Took it out this year and well you can say (The rats had a feast on my flour mixture!!)trying to re purpose the bark and add more detail to the scary eyes and mouth.

    I’m so glad you showed us this because this is exactly how I learned to make paper mache in grade school, some years ago. I will add wood glue and salt as you suggest because I plan to make things for my outside pond. I made a zombie mask a few years ago for Halloween. I used the basics, paper towels, water, and flour for the mask, and then acrylic paints to paint it. I still have that mask, stored in a sip locked baggie. It still looks great. Thank you, again.

    l use the flour and water glue BUT l find that mice love it! They don't bother my paper clay at all, maybe its the joint compound and wood glue. Paper clay is awesome and hardens like rock but is not mould resistant when facing moisture. l am going to use glue and salt with my flour and water may work for the mouse trouble. l love your videos Jay and especially like your creativity, keep on with your tutorials and thank you dearly!

    Regarding Mold: It generally won't grow if you keep your home and other areas at less than 50% humidity. Get a bunch of cheap Hygrometers (aka Humidity Gauges - less than $5 USD each in the US) place them in 1 room to test their consistency in measurement, then place them around your home to figure out if you are at risk of Mold.

      When he said they add bleach for mold prevention, vinegar was the first thing I thought. Pinterest just complicated things for me hahaha! I made paper mache back in jr. high school in the late 1960's. We used flour, salt and water as paste. Years later, some of my items grew mold under the paint and sealent, even though they were stored in an air conditioned house. We let the items dry a week before painting. Maybe not enough? Anyway, I think flour feeds mold. I am sorry, but that is my opinion. I think the ultimate paper mache paste would be acid retardant and mold retardant, although that might be expensive.

    Hello!
    I made pumpkins 2 years ago after watching and learning from you, thank you! This year I learned to make characters or sculptures using school glue and paper towels vs newspaper. Once dry, it's very sturdy but not weather proofed for outside. My question is, can I pour a silicone mold use that piece made out of school glue and paper? I'd love to make resin or plaster copies of it if I can? Is it possible without ruining the original piece?

    • @UnhingedProductions1
      @UnhingedProductions1  4 роки тому

      You can but depends on if you have a lot of deep undercuts, those could make it very hard to get the piece back out in good condition. Highly recommend using a good release agent

    I am making a tank for a stretched chopper style bike build. I used mdf insert cut and fit to size then expanding spray foam for the bulk if the building and shaping. I then went over the foam with paper mache clay and used some to fit the panels to the contours of the bike frame tubing.
    I plan to fiberglass the outside shell. My question is this. How would I go about sealing up the inside where it contours to the frame without changing the shape? I feel like fiberglass won't really do here. Any help and suggestions would be appreciated.

    Hello, I'm sorry I I know my comment is pretty late but I've been watching a ton of your videos on paper mache projects because I really want to do something. I really like your recipes and was wondering if I do make a pumpkin with the kids and wanted to display them outside. How long do you think they will last? I live in Arizona, so its mostly dry out. I'd like to keep them till next season if possible. What are your thoughts. Thanks!

    • @UnhingedProductions1
      @UnhingedProductions1  5 років тому +2

      If you use tightbond wood glue in your paste and clay, and once you pumpkin is dry, apply a layer of spare urethane to the raw pumpkin, then do a base coat of exterior latex paint, then color paint and a final layer of spare urethane it will last a long time. I have pumpkins that are 7 years old and I leave them out for the full month of October.. if you get a very heavy rain I’d check to make sure it isn’t getting soft, because sometimes they will. If that happens you can restuff it bring it in and let it dry out, will be good as new
