  • In early 1995, Sega unleashed Sega Rally Championship to a worldwide audience. It was their first polygon rally racing game, and it was nothing short of absolute arcade perfection.

    Episode Notes:
    1. Arcade version captured via Nebula Model 2. Saturn version via RGB Framemeister. PS2 version via component Framemeister.
    2. Takenobu Mitsuyoshi has created a ton of music for Sega. Outrunners, Virtua Racing, Virtua Fighter, Daytona, Sega Rally, it's amazing the wealth of content this dude was a part of.
    3. Sega Rally 3 was released as Sega Rally Online Arcade for the Xbox 360 and PS3, though it isn't a one to one port. Sadly, it was pulled from those digital stores soon thereafter.
    4. Sega Rally 2 has only ever seen a PC and Dreamcast port, neither of which were arcade perfect.
    5. Sega Rally Revo is a stand alone game released on the Xbox 360, PS3, PSP, and PC. It stands as sort a remake of the first game, though I would say it is more inspired than a direct representation.
    6. Sega Rally to this day is one of my favorite racing games of all time. It isn't loaded with content, but there is a joy to its gameplay that few other racing games even come close to matching.

There's a recurring theme with SLX videos: "Here's a great game everyone loved and would gladly pay to play on a modern platform! There are no plans for an AGES release."
Maybe Sega can just put him in charge of deciding what gets the green light? I need Sega Rally more than I need Wonder Boy.

The game was coded for Windows CE (which the Dreamcast supported as a major feature) instead of directly for the hardware using Sega's SDK (like most console games are made). This put an extra layer of an OS/drivers/etc between the game and the hardware, causing shitty, unstable frame rates. The game was meant as a demo for Dreamcast's Windows CE integration, telling game makers that they could just do Windows development instead of learning the DC's custom SDK, but it it accomplished the opposite, as very few other DC games were ever developed using the Windows CE SDK following this debacle.

I loved this game thoroughly when it came out, so much that I’ve purchased it twice. Why twice you might ask? Well The first time I’ve played it was a lent copy from a friend, that copy was never returned to him because my little sister damaged it beyond repair with pencils so I had to refund my friend with a new copy, I got mine 6 months later with some savings. Still got that copy, I fire it sometimes both for the game or just the redbook audio.

Model 2 PCB ran about $10,000 from what I recall, using super expensive military simulator graphics hardware to achieve total superiority over the competition. There was no way to put those GPUs into a reasonably-priced home console. The Saturn already sold for like $700 in today money.

      Long Lost Puss
I agree. They did do an amazing job with most Model 2 conversions starting with VF2. You really have to respect their software engineers working with such “difficult” hardware and figuring out how to squeeze all that juice out of it in a fairly short amount of time. It’s just too bad that by that time, the Saturn had to work extra hard to overcome a bad rep as an “inferior 3D” machine. Also, Sega placed all bets on the strength of their arcade lineup at the time when arcades were quickly waning in popularity in the West and gamers began to expect more content out of their console games. I remember when Sega was selling the system with VF2, Sega Rally and Virtua Cop packed in and still not making a dent in PSX sales. :( Still, I never regretted getting my Saturn (which I still have) on the early launch date. It will always have a special place in my heart.

As mentioned in this video, in particular, the physics were so much better than with the Saturn version of Daytona USA. One thing, though. I think best sega rally ever is specifically Saturn version ! Added content just makes it much better than arcade version as a whole imo . Unfortunately i think Sega Rally never was as good as those days. First one had just right balance between arcade and realism while games after that feel almost like cars are completely weightless. Still even later SR games are alright especially now for cheap

An awesome arcade racer and an equally awesome silver-box Saturn classic. Man I loved this game back in the day. As good as the arcade version is, I think I actually like the Saturn version better, the steering wheel in the arcade version felt overly sensitive the few times I played it. And what an amazing job they did in porting this to the Saturn, best looking racing game on the system by a lot, in my opinion! Yeah it has less to render and fewer game logic calculations to perform than Daytona, but it's still fantastic!
Dreamcast Sega Rally 2 was definitely a disappointment. The gameplay was decent, but man, that framerate. Thank Windows CE and Microsoft for that one!

I'd have to say that aside of the polygon warping, the Saturn version looks less glitchy and has a more stable frame rate.
Also, the music order bothered me - due to the track names, I'd always switch them, and it seemed better that way - Desert Land first, Getting Muddy second and Conditioned Reflex third.

The Saturn port of this game was truly an amazing arcade racing masterpiece. It’s still my all time favourite arcade racer on any home console too this day. Just beating your Personal Best time by a hundredth of a second was so addictive, which gave it endless longevity for me & the heavy drifting style handling just felt absolutely perfect. Not even its many sequels can beat the 1st SEGA Rally Championships handling.

    Sega Rally PS2 supports 480p.
Can also be forced to widescreen 16:9 on real hardware to show more of the scenery on both sides of the screen.
    Check out my forum post

Obviously the HUD 2D elements are stretched, but you can see more of the Sega Rally stage on both sides!

Even though it took a hit in visuals, I still prefer the Saturn version over the PS2 version. It was very impressive for its time and plays well. I know the PS2 had some great games in Japan, even imported some of them myself, but I've come to appreciate the Dreamcast over it even if it has a smaller library and is a less powerful machine. Even though the Dreamcast pushed less polygons, everything just looks sharper on it and most games support 480p.

Sega Lord X! If you get this, I have a huge request for a video because I can't find the info on Google or UA-cam. PLEASE make a definitive Saturn game list of which is the best version of each game based off region. I am working on my collection and am wanting the best version from whichever region. I can't find anybody arpund who knows this. :) Little edit, the price doesn't mean that much compared to better performance, features, and any other extras.

i had this in 1997, for Sega Saturn. Excellent conversion, but extremelly short, like every Sega arcade racing games. The two games in split mode was fine, too, and if u own two SS and two SR, u can play in link mode, like the arcades!

OMG what a game.. its hard to have a definitive no.1 with so many games from so many genres that are hard to compare ,,, but if someone held a gun to my head and said "CHOOSE ONE GAME", it would have to be Sega rally! I have a question tho, if someone can help me out.... So, I noticed this thing that the opposition cars do while playing on model 2 Emulator and I notice it in this video too- they occasionally and suddenly jolt from their position in a very unnatural way..At first I thought this was just due to the emulator and because of that, I just stick to playing it on my Saturn (in spite of the visuals looking awesome, even today, on the arcade version((tho the soundtrack is better on the Saturn!)) ). Unfortunately, its really hard to find Sega rally 1 in the arcades these days to check if the original does it too. I absolutely adore this game and I'd even consider shelling out to get the arcade cabinet once (if ever) I can afford it.. but not if this jolty-glitchy thing happens in the arcade version. I don't remember noticing it in my childhood, maybe I only notice it now after playing 800hours of gameplay on the Saturn version..hehe. If that is the case, I'd just stick to the Saturn version.. but its so long since I got to play in the arcade I don't remember. I'm presuming the footage in this video from a model 2 emulator ...but does anyone know if that AI car movement happens in the arcade version too??

Sega Rally 2 on the Dreamcast was OK, but lacked the fun of the original Saturn port. The PS3 saw a 'reimagining' of Sega Rally, but was overlooked and didn't really do much to stand out from Dirt and other rally racers. The Saturn was truly the best place to play Sega Rally at home.

Arcade version is one of the best games from those days. One noteworthy thing is that PC had S2 (also called screamer 2) that was pretty much a mechanics and feel of Sega Rally copied, but with more cars, tracks and better graphics. I absolutely loved that game as kid and imo is really worth testing for Sega rally fans.
