- Jesse come home, there's a hole in the bed
Where we slept; now it's growing cold.
Jesse your face, in the place where we lay
by the hearth, all apart, it hangs on my heart
And I'm leaving the light on the stairs
No I'm not scared; I wait for you
Hey Jesse, it's lonely, come home.
Jesse the stairs in the halls, recalling
Your steps; and I remember too.
All the pictures are shaded and fading in grey
And I still set a place on the table at noon
And I'm leaving the light on the stairs
No I'm not scared; I wait for you
Hey Jesse, it's lonely, come home.
Jesse the spread on the bed,
It's like when you left, I kept it for you.
All the blues and the greens have been recently cleaned
And are seemingly new; hey Jess, me and you.
We'll swallow the light on the stairs
I'll fix up my hair, we'll sleep unawares
Hey Jesse, it's lonely, come home - Розваги
This woman is a gift from God. Her voice is so smooth and clear. This is what was called talent when I was growing up. We don't encourage this kind of talent anymore and so it's hard to find. Thank you Roberta, for making my young life beautiful.
My wife survived two bouts of cancer, but succumbed to heart problems three years ago, leaving me to raise our son, now 8, by myself. I completely understand what you feel when listening to this incredible song. For me, it was Cindy Birdsong, my favorite Supreme, singing "In This Very Room", which I stumbled across a couple of weeks later. Cried my eyes out each time...but it really helped.
Randall Johnson ...I know the pain of losing a wife..l pray you find Peace...
She can break your heart and put a smile on your face with the same song. The emotions in her voice are so strong. Who in their lives hasn’t felt the pain of lost or unrequited love. It makes you stronger or you succumb, but you are never the same. As always, you have touched me with your beautiful voice.

May God keep you in his hands.
Sometimes we can renew ourselves through music.
If this song brings you close to wife then it has done what it was meant to do.
As long as we have memories then nobody can truly be said to have left us.
Memories are what protects us from the harshness of life.
All that someone really wants to know when they die is that they have been truly loved, that is the sweet & simple secret of life.
Roberta Flack has a voice so beautiful and will never be match ! That's all I can say.
Listening to Miss Roberta got me througha a lot of lonely times in my life when I was younger.....no one can ever compare to her......
This song has always been moving to me since I first heard it as a teen. I lost my wife to cancer 1 year ago.It means so much more to me now. I cannot listen to this without crying. Ms. Roberta Flack has one of the most beautiful voices of her generation.
Kevin Allen Kevin...be strong my friend..l also lost my wife..l know it's a horrible pain..but stay close to God and he will never forsake you.
Only seeing this now, but I feel your pain. I hope you found love & companionship in the last 11 years, my friend. 💔

punaise quel interprétation MAGNIFIQUE
Jessie was on his way home when his plane crashed off the waters of Masbate 5 days ago. this song is fitting tribute to a great man, an icon of good governance, loving father and husband. In behalf of all Filipinos who believe there is still a chance for a better Philippines, Vaya con Dios Jessie Manalastas Robredo.
One of the Best Singers of all time singing a great song! Love Janis' version also but Roberta brings it home and I mean all the way home!!
beautiful song, beautiful voice..............but when Janis Ian sings it...........the earth stands still for just a moment
October 2020 still listening
It's June 2012....it was almost 35 years ago that I heard this song for the first time!...
Lot has happened in my life since then..divorce, loss of affection from children and others....
It made me cry and feel good at the same time. I like this as well as the Janis Ian version which I saw live. They are both good but Ms. Flack's version literally "tugs" where you can't hold your tears back anymore!
Thank you for posting this.
beautiful
Beautiful performance.

The greatest vocalist of all time, her voice is so freaking clear
Fabulous clear voice, sad song.

Roberta's studio version hit #30 in Billboard, 10-27-73. God bless ya, for postin' it. Thanx!

Another from the gentle talent of Roberta Flack ... thanks, Phil
This brings back so many memories
On this day in 1973 {September 22nd} Roberta Flack's "Jesse" entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; eventually it peaked at #30 and spent 9 weeks on the Top 100...
It was surrounded by #1 records; Ms. Flack's two previous charted records both reached #1, "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" {#1 for 6 weeks} and "Killing Me Softly With His Words" {#1 for 5 weeks}...
And then her next release after "Jesse" was "Feel Like Makin' Love", which was #1 for one week...
@mrcell61, sorry to hear about your loss. Take care and keep your wife alive with beautiful thought about her
I saw you live in melbourne victoria, australia you were just wonderful, and you always will be. Thank you
Thanks for posting this LIVE version of one of my favorite songs by her. Wish I could here, Let It Be Me. She nails it so beautifully.....
Composed by "Society 's Child, At Seventeen, Janis Ian, Beautiful.
I wait for you!!!!!
thank you for posting this. it is one of my favorites....much appreciated!
i dont know how she produces that crazy halo in here sound...but its very unique to her
I have always loved this song and this woman. I know Janis Ian did it first. Janis version is beautiful. But Roberta to me her voice just makes this song so hauntingly beautiful.
Written and originally recorded by Janis Ian.
maravilhosa
If there was ever a better or sadder song written than this; please tell me.
@77sunsetable Since Janis Ian wrote the song, how does your story tie in to Roberta Flack? I'm confused!
the live version is good.....but the one thats actually recorded on the album is excellent....either way, a truly beautiful song...
so beautiful !!!
My mistake but his name is actually spelled Jesse just like the song.
@mrcell61 ME too seriously
I hate cancer and every person who make $ denying a dying person any drug that might cure them...And mostly the big pharmica that insists on doing clinical trials by needlessly mixing possable cures with their beloved ,money making chemo. Lost my dear wife almost a year ago too..Me and my departed wife loved this song criet to it in 1978-9 ....
mymymymy6 .. Having lost two younger brothers, and many friends..l totally agree with you..lt is our modern day plague.
So somebody says this song was written by Janis Ian about being in love with Jesse Colin Young?? Really? Janis is a Lesbian. of course, she was very young when she hit her fame so maybe she was in love with him. I dunno. I always read the song as being addressed to somebody who had died and not merely left via breaking up.
