The first half of the ua-cam.com/users/postUgkx3ICSK6nSknaL_45CU2NmFSoXjarGMDiJ book is everything about wood: types, tools, finishes, setting up shop etc. The second half is all about doing projects for inside and outside of the home. The color pictures are helpful. After reading a dozen of these types of books, this is probably the best overall (layout, color photos, plans). Only detraction is that many of the projects use a table saw/router/planer, which are usually expensive and take up space, so the plans are less friendly to newcomers and the budget conscious. But I know I can use a drill, circular saw or a jigsaw to make the projects.
Hey Linn, it was so nice spending the afternoon with you guys! We had a great time :) I'm looking forward to seeing what you come up with... maybe even some turned mallets ;) I'm a phone call away, and practically neighbors. If you ever need any help, just let me know.
P.S. thanks for the wax!
Take care,
Carl
Carl Jacobson Hey Carl, I was thinking turned mallets would be cool - or at the very least turned handles on square heads. It was so much fun to have you down!
Que torno pequeno, muito bonito!
Hi Carl, sorry to drag up an old one but is there any reason you use WD40 vs a paste wax of some sort? Just asking as I use Minwax Finishing paste wax on my cast tops and have just recently done so with the lathe (2 days ago).
Keep up the good work Darbin and Carl.
Dan.

Holy crap, how lucky are you to have one-on-one instruction from Carl Jacobson....in your shop?!? The guy is a rockstar
Master woodworkers always seem to be the most soft spoken and calm people like Carl here.
Having watched hundreds of woodturning videos (but not tried it myself), I found this very useful - it's the very basic questions that often are not answered as everyone assumes it's common knowledge - thanks to you and Carl for this.
Great questions Linn. This video sums up most questions the beginning turner has. Carls answers are spot on and to the point. Great job you two.
I have no experience with wood turning, but I would love to try doing this. Great tutorial, Thanks Linn and Thanks Carl.
Great information, I think the lathe is another essential tool to a woodwork shop, each tool we have opens doors to new projects. I’m here because I’m adding it to my woodworking.
Thanks Linn. I just got my lathe today, and you asked all the questions I wanted to ask. This video was very helpful. And thanks to Carl too!
Yay, Linn's jumping head first into turning!! Can't wait to see some turning projects. It's addictive, but so much fun! You both did an excellent job in this video, hopefully it will inspire even more people to give turning a try.
Zac Higgins ik spreek geen engels sorry
Did a excellent job Linn, on asking good questions and Carl on giving good information on covering the basics in wood turning. Don't have a lathe yet, but saving up money to buy a good quality lathe that can do small stuff like pens, and large stuff like table legs. With the lack of room in the shop want to get that all in one lathe. I learned a lot from this video. Keep up the good work on your channel Linn.
I can't wait to see what you create with your lathe. I have so much fun with mine and you will to. Great video. I can tell your really exited to start turning.
Magnificent sharing between a great turner like Carl and you a great DIY artist.
Darbin Orvar Linn, great 101. I'm excited to see some turning in your future. Was nice to see Carl come by and give some pointers. Carl Jacobson has some awesome videos out there for sure! He inspired me to jump on the turning bandwagon...
Linn I have always thought that Carl is a great teacher. Glad you have a lathe. It will come in handy at your shop.
Linn, this is one of the best videos on your channel and anywhere on youTube for that matter. Well done!
***** Thanks for the nice comment Jack!
Great video on Lathe Basics Linn, Carl is a great teacher, and I have learned so much from him,Nice Job
***** Thanks Sterling, I agree Carl is a great teacher!
Fantastic video, 2 extremely nice people, giving a great introduction to woodturning. I find this channel the most relaxing on youtube. Thanks for sharing.
lathes are awesome and a must in every wood shop, great video guys
***** Thanks Dema, it was a lot of fun.
Excellent. Excellent. Thank you both for posting this video.
I'm picking up a lathe and after the numerous videos I've watched, I still did not get the right information I needed to first start out... this really helped
Really enjoyed this episode. Looking forward to seeing some of your completed projects
Thank you for this video. I bought a lathe a few months ago when I started resin casting. So far it's just a fancy buffing machine. :) starting to think about actually turning and this video helps.
I have a whole wood shop that I haven't used. Probably 25 years since I've used any of these kind of tools. Now I'm not working I thought of putting my shop together. I am rebuilding an old lathe that has been outside a few winters. All parts there but the wod table was rotting away. The motor runs smooth and I've repainted the metal. Can't wait to try it out. Thanks for the video.
Awesome video and great info. great questions Darbin.
Take care.
Albert
Excellent video, very informative, thank you Linn and Carl
Great colaboration! I love watching woodturning, and carl is well known in this comunity.great initative linn! Keep em coming.from a rookie turner in norway.
Great video Linn & Carl! I used to turn when I was a teenager and it was just downright fun in a way that no other woodworking technique can match (for me at least). Getting a lathe is definitely on my to do list!
You were really excited. Thanks for sharing.
Hi Lynn, I think you chose the correct guy to teach you, Good luck with the turning, I've yet to get my lathe but saying that I really like watching these UA-cam videos. It's a refreshing change to see a lady, don't forget the Safety Mask and take care.
Thanks for sharing.
Cheers
Andy

Great intro into wood turning Linn and Carl. It will come in handy when I get a lathe.
Thank you for this! I just got that exact lathe and this helped a lot!
Thanks to both of you for sharing very useful tips. I have also started woodturning but am little bit scared of traditional tools especially "Skew" and had some very bad catches. Thanks again and keep on sharing more tips!
Finally. Not that I ever looked up the difference. But it's good to finally hear the difference between carbide and traditional tools. They aren't really around when I was actively turning. But know I notice everyone using them. To me it looks like everyone is scraping instead of cutting. I personally would suggest learning with traditional tools and then get carbide if you still feel the need. Lots of good info. Thanks for posting.
Great Q and A. That is what I call team work.
Jared English Thanks Jared!
Perfect timing! I just got a lathe! Thank you so much!
I'm glad you asked the question about wet or dry wood. I have a pile of dry wood, I wasn't sure if it needed to have some moistier for turning. I think I am going to buy myself a lathe. A nice little hobby.
What he says about cracks in wood and keeping the speed down is so true. Dad was a Wood shop teacher. He told me of students running the lathe too fast and wouldn't turn it down. Their pieces would pull apart.
You are pretty lucky Linn. Enjoyed the video and hearing even some of the basic stuff Carl brought to light.
Hi, I am making a wood lathe in my machine shop now be done in a week or so and I'll be back to see more of your great videos.
Hi Linn, Very nice video! Carl is a fantastic guy and excellent for explaining, good guess selection! Cheers! Daniel
Wohoo I'm sure you're going to have a lot of fun with the lathe! Nice interview :)
Get Hands Dirty Thank you!
Great video into all! I been wanting to invest in a lathe, and some tools. This tutorial was very very helpful. I will be visiting the local turners club in May.
I learned a lot of things tonight, nice video!
So well done, thanks for sharing!
Excellent information guys, you're great!!!
Lin, every single Wood turner is here for you to assist in any question you may have... Down side is that say out of 100 turners, you will get 500,000 answers.
Oh contrary to belief, you can sharpen a carbide insert. all you need is a diamond sharpening plate - 220 or 250 grit. Look for the Video's on here from Cap'n Eddie Castelin channel. I won't post a link respectfully there is more fun going to his channel and exploring.
This was great! Thanks to both of you, it was a really nice sum of info for people like me (without a lathe... for now) :)
jakoball Thanks!
I recently picked up a small lathe but haven't tried it yet...a little intimidated. This tutorial has given me the confidence to try it (as soon as I have some time).
Danengewood- .Dan Engebretsen Glad to hear it Dan.
Many thanks for this nice intro. Have fun with your lathe :-)
Thanks I picked up some great tips.
very good info! thanks
Hey Linn that's so cool to get a lesson from Carl ,wish i lived closer to do that , great info and video thanks so much Patrick : ) oh and did ya make any shaving while Carl was there ?
Patrick's work shop Hi Patrick! It was really great to have Carl down, I didn't get to really make anything too much, but it was a great learning experience.
Great video! Thank you!
Right on, great share, good questions asked. Don’t buy a small lathe. Get the biggest you can afford :). The more you get into turning the more addicting it becomes.
Carl is very talented!!!
:D cant wait to see you use it, wishing i save up to buy one myself next year:) HAve fun :D
Been years since I've done any turning but one thing I've never forgotten. WD-40 is NOT a lubricant. It is a water displacement compound, hence the WD. Sprayon 711 is a much better choice, used extensively by the auto industry. I use it on my saw trunnions, router guides and lifter and even my garage door rollers.
hi Linn and Carl great video guys, I'm giving the wood turning a go soon having been given a couple of lathes by my father recently, I've always been curious about lathes and their uses but never had much previous experience, only briefly in my younger school days in woodworking class but then the subject did not really turn me on. Maybe now having come across your channel I might be infused. Peter
Good information.
Very informative!
Super helpful ! Thanks !👍
Ahhh the Carl Jacobson! Love him! You lucky girl.
You couldn't have found a better teacher. (IMO)
Great combination, my favorite wood turner and woodworker in the same video. Love you both. Keep the videos coming. I enjoy watching you both, first thing in the morning with a cup of coffee. MY quite time.
Regards to Both of you
Dave
David Fisher Thanks for the very nice comment David! Glad you liked the video.
Ah, the master and the apprentice, thanks Carl for showing Linn the first steps to getting into wood turning, really helpful to have an actual turner on site to walk you through these things so you don't have to learn any nasty lessons the hard way.
It can be a lot of fun and it also can bite you badly, a couple of weeks ago I got distracted by a loose screw on my carbide tool and stuck my hand in a spinning square blank. Rule ONE shut the lathe OFF if you are doing anything other than actually turning, I knew this and usually follow the rule but distraction took me out of the game and I skipped a safety rule and it cost me a busted knuckle. I won't forget the lesson this time. Be aware, be careful, be safe, please.
Awesome lathe starter video, Linn! And bonus to have Carl in your shop as well. I had to give a double take when I first saw him there. I though for sure I clicked on your video and wasn't expecting him to show up! So what is your first project going to be now that you had Carl over to give his expert advice? Do you have plans to make a video on it as well?
I enjoyed the video. What a nice surprise!
Steve French Thanks Steve!
So glad to have found this! You asked all the right questions! Your lathe looks very smart, Can you say what make / model it is? thanks for the lecture.
Wow, you were fortunate to have Carl as your teacher. Well done; I learned a lot. [Only quibble is I found the 'black screens' superfluous: the questions posted on them were pretty much what you asked Carl in person. I found they interrupted the flow and concentration - compared to your many other excellent videos that do not have this feature.]
Great video Linn. Anything that you want to know about turning on a lathe just ask Carl. The man is genius when it comes to turning. Another person to talk to is Robbie something I can't think of his full channel name. I really enjoy watching his channel. I hope you have a great time with your lathe. They are a lot of fun. I had a small one but the motor burned out and I haven't replaced it yet. Liked and shared.
Thanks for sharing
Roy
Roy Wrenn Thanks Roy for the nice comment! It was great to get some advice from Carl.
Very informative video! Thanks for sharing it, both of you!
Scrap wood City Thanks!
Just ordered a small lathe, and cant wait to make some vases, goblets, ...
: )
Thanks for the informative video, Linn! I'd always wanted to try the lathe but don't know where to start; none of my friends is into woodwork. Saving money on purchasing a lathe will be my next goal.
Green Kitty Glad you liked the video, the lathe is a lot of fun.
Way to go Linn. When you need a teacher just go get one of the best out there. Hope you enjoy the lathe as much as I do.
very informative....
A follow up video where you do a 101 - turn your first piece would be good.. but this was excellent.
Nice video. I'd like to try turning sometime.
+Mark Hanson (Mark's Workshop Creations) Thanks Mark, it's a lot of fun!
4:17 Sounds like a neighbor wasn't wearing a face shield.
Awesome!
Hi Linn, very informative. Will Carl be coming back to show us turning 101??
Damnit Linn! Now i need to go buy a lathe
Fantastic for pens
Good stuff. Is there any purpose to using a slower speed other than safety? I have some concentricity issues making rings and I’m pretty sure the mandrel that I use is the culprit but I suspect that using either the highest speed or the lowest speed will help reduce these concentricity issues... I just don’t know if I’m right at all or if it’s the high speed or the low speed that would help.
Hello Darbin, I enjoyed the video, great ?'s How in the world did you get Wood Master Mr CJ in your shop, bees wax is good to use also
Sorry I just came across your video. And it was informative. I've watched tons of lathe videos. And the last 1 showed a guy turning, in which the wood exploded while he was turning. In your opinion. What could have caused this? Maybe like in your video, cracks in the wood.
I have one question, I need help in deciding what wheels to get for my bench grinder to sharpen my chisels , what grits would be the best combination? Please help if you can. Ihave a 1920’s cast iron Lathe and am starting to turning more and more wood.
Hi Linn. Instead of putting wD-40 how about putting was on the bed? It won’t attract as much dust and clippings?
I use beeswax on the bed, because dust does not stick to it and its slippery wax sheen lasts much longer than oils which tend to turn into gunge when dust mixes with them.
I was hoping you would fire up the lathe and get started. Is that coming soon?
cool video
cool
Very cool Darbin! I love my lathe! Candlesticks are fun to start on :)
I wish I had "The Master of Wood Turning" to come visit me.. but I don't want to pay his airfare and accommodations!
McGinn's WoodShop Thanks Jason, yeah I was thinking about some candlesticks, might be fun.
I love the lathe! It's a great tool to do whatever on and have results pretty fast
why not use paste wax on the lathe rails same as on saw tables?
I thought the title said "How to Turn on a Wood Lathe" and I thought, OK, it doesn't get more beginner than.
Instead of WD40, use wax. Wax repels moisture; WD's residue attracts dust particles, etc. Secondly, I am curious: why the on-screen questions followed by Darbin herself asking the same question?
Can/will you lmk when u have more medium/large walnut mallet wth hickory handle in stock please..they are all beautiful but I especially like the walnut mallet head and hickory handle..
Thanks linn:)
Joe Walters Hi Joe, I am working on one just like that right now. Send me your email so I can let you know when I get it done tomorrow.
You mean I don’t need to go out and buy a $3000.00 lathe to get started? 😁
Thank you for posting.
Darbin Orvar what type of carbide tools were they?
Miter Mike's Woodshop Hi Mike, I added a link in the description to rockler too...www.rockler.com/carbide-mini-turning-tool-3-piece-set
