    The first half of the ua-cam.com/users/postUgkx3ICSK6nSknaL_45CU2NmFSoXjarGMDiJ book is everything about wood: types, tools, finishes, setting up shop etc. The second half is all about doing projects for inside and outside of the home. The color pictures are helpful. After reading a dozen of these types of books, this is probably the best overall (layout, color photos, plans). Only detraction is that many of the projects use a table saw/router/planer, which are usually expensive and take up space, so the plans are less friendly to newcomers and the budget conscious. But I know I can use a drill, circular saw or a jigsaw to make the projects.

    Hey Linn, it was so nice spending the afternoon with you guys! We had a great time :) I'm looking forward to seeing what you come up with... maybe even some turned mallets ;) I'm a phone call away, and practically neighbors. If you ever need any help, just let me know.
    P.S. thanks for the wax!
    Take care,

      Hi Carl, sorry to drag up an old one but is there any reason you use WD40 vs a paste wax of some sort? Just asking as I use Minwax Finishing paste wax on my cast tops and have just recently done so with the lathe (2 days ago).
      Keep up the good work Darbin and Carl.

    Did a excellent job Linn, on asking good questions and Carl on giving good information on covering the basics in wood turning. Don't have a lathe yet, but saving up money to buy a good quality lathe that can do small stuff like pens, and large stuff like table legs. With the lack of room in the shop want to get that all in one lathe. I learned a lot from this video. Keep up the good work on your channel Linn.

    I have a whole wood shop that I haven't used. Probably 25 years since I've used any of these kind of tools. Now I'm not working I thought of putting my shop together. I am rebuilding an old lathe that has been outside a few winters. All parts there but the wod table was rotting away. The motor runs smooth and I've repainted the metal. Can't wait to try it out. Finally. Not that I ever looked up the difference. But it's good to finally hear the difference between carbide and traditional tools. They aren't really around when I was actively turning. But know I notice everyone using them. To me it looks like everyone is scraping instead of cutting. I personally would suggest learning with traditional tools and then get carbide if you still feel the need. Lots of good info. Thanks for posting.

    Lin, every single Wood turner is here for you to assist in any question you may have... Down side is that say out of 100 turners, you will get 500,000 answers.
    Oh contrary to belief, you can sharpen a carbide insert. all you need is a diamond sharpening plate - 220 or 250 grit. Look for the Video's on here from Cap'n Eddie Castelin channel. I won't post a link respectfully there is more fun going to his channel and exploring.

    Been years since I've done any turning but one thing I've never forgotten. WD-40 is NOT a lubricant. It is a water displacement compound, hence the WD. Sprayon 711 is a much better choice, used extensively by the auto industry. I use it on my saw trunnions, router guides and lifter and even my garage door rollers.

    Ah, the master and the apprentice, thanks Carl for showing Linn the first steps to getting into wood turning, really helpful to have an actual turner on site to walk you through these things so you don't have to learn any nasty lessons the hard way.
    It can be a lot of fun and it also can bite you badly, a couple of weeks ago I got distracted by a loose screw on my carbide tool and stuck my hand in a spinning square blank. Rule ONE shut the lathe OFF if you are doing anything other than actually turning, I knew this and usually follow the rule but distraction took me out of the game and I skipped a safety rule and it cost me a busted knuckle. I won't forget the lesson this time. Be aware, be careful, be safe, please.

    Good stuff. Is there any purpose to using a slower speed other than safety? I have some concentricity issues making rings and I’m pretty sure the mandrel that I use is the culprit but I suspect that using either the highest speed or the lowest speed will help reduce these concentricity issues... I just don’t know if I’m right at all or if it’s the high speed or the low speed that would help.

  • @paulsmith1981
    @paulsmith1981 4 роки тому

    I use beeswax on the bed, because dust does not stick to it and its slippery wax sheen lasts much longer than oils which tend to turn into gunge when dust mixes with them.

    Instead of WD40, use wax. Wax repels moisture; WD's residue attracts dust particles, etc. Secondly, I am curious: why the on-screen questions followed by Darbin herself asking the same question?
