My dad passed away last Saturday and he had been turning for 10+ years. Went in his garage and found a bowl still on the lathe that he hadn't finished. Plan to finish it for him. Hope to be 1/100th the woodworker he was. New subscriber here. Look forward to watching more videos.
RIP
My Dad passed away last Sunday. I’ve inherited his tools and I’ve been wanting to learn how to use the lathe. Thanks for this introduction.
RIP and respects to your dad, Roger is a great guy to follow both for wood and pretty much most other things in the workshop, hope your and your family are ok. Much love from Spain and enjoy your dad's hobby.
My grandfather used to do lots of wood turning while he was alive. Unfortunately I never had the chance to be taught by him before he passed but I have now inherited his lathe. Thank you for this video and for setting me on the right track to getting a good start.
This was one of the best presented DIY videos I've seen on nearly any subject. I felt I was almost just learning it in person.
Glad it was helpful!
68 year old and my son just gave me a wood lathe. Never used one and watching your video probably saved my life. Thanks.
Glad I could help!
Love learning from the elders
Never had a grandpa or dad to teach me any type of work men do
Always self taught and learning from men like these and wishing to pass down to my son and daughter and future grandchildren
Well said!
This video oozes quality! The microphone, lighting, camera angle - the workshop is clean and tidy, ultra-clean. - With so much wood and wood-turning, i'd assume sawdust EVERYWHERE. But this... is like they cleaned it with a fine-toothed brush! The content and information is fantastic, thank you for sharing!
I'm 70 and have just begun turning and I need all the help I can get. Thank you for sharing your knowledge 👍
Glad to help
@@rogerwebb9600 Any wood can be use??
Very informative! I was recently given a nearly 50 year old lathe. I've been rebuilding it.. I haven't actually done any turning yet. Thanks!
I was set this as homework and fell in love. Thank you for such a wholesome and helpful video😍😍
this is so helpful for me! im a teenager and trying to get into woodturning and this helped me learn things i never knew before. Thanks Roger!
You're so welcome!
I just bought my first lathe yesterday. Great video and very well explained. It was one of the best videos I came across yet. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you very much!
I bought mine about 6 months ago but only started using it in the last 2 months, enjoy your new toy :)
This is an excellent video for a beginner such as myself. The music was rather pleasant and calming. Thank you so very much for sharing.
Thank you so much Roger, for sharing your years of experience with the likes of myself, who, has been wanting to get into turning. All the videos I have watched skip the novices needs. Your commentary has found me well, and will continue to memorize all your info and prompts before I start out. Thank you so, so much. Thumbs up 100% for your time putting this presentation together.
You are very welcome
Excellent tutorial.
Many thanks!
I just bought myself a lathe and I can't wait for it to get here.
I feel more informed about what to expect when I start using it.
Thank you :)
Super excited.
Been watching people make cool stuff for a while.
Thanks Roger. I had been looking for a lathe for a while and I finally found a grizzly g1067z... a discontinued model. It runs well and came with a bunch of hardware/chisels. Thanks for the information... it will prove to be very helpful, no doubt. Take care.
Glad I could help
Good refresher course especially when I not do any turning for while thank u 👍
Thank you sir. I’ve always been fascinated by woodworking and the craftsmen that do it.
Very welcome
It'd be great to hear more about skew safety. This was great, thanks for the video!
So happy with your teaching. Thank you for the lesson Mr Roger!
You are very welcome
Im a first timer user of turn8ng wood lathe and i find your video very helpful and educational, I have learned a lot. Thank you for sharing master👍.
Glad to help
I was delighted to find your video , however I agree with a previous comment, the singing makes it very difficult to concentrate on what you are saying. You and your knowledge are enough 😊. Thank you for sharing your knowledge .
Thanks for the video Roger, I found it very helpful as a beginning turner. Jut picked up a MIDI sized lathe for a project I'm working on, you videos are just what I was looking for.
I was just given a lathe by a buddy who knows I like doing wood work. I've always wanted one, but obviously they're expensive tools to purchase. I just wanted to say thank you, for giving information on tools, machines ect. But you do in a manner that is not "Buy this brand only" like I see some do. "Do your own research" I think were your words. I appreciate the openness to it. I'm writing like like 1/2 through the video, but I already definitely feel like I am stickin around on this channel for a while. Thank you again for your instructional videos and sharing your knowledge, much appreciated!!
I appreciate you passing on years of knowledge and experience. Keep up the good work. Thank you.
I don't know if most people can imagine being 40 and seeing/discovering what a lathe is for the very first time...my mind is blown! I am shocked to have made it this far without knowing such a tool existed, and yet this explains so much about how almost every piece of furniture on earth was made... 🤯
And that is the reason I decided to make the tool, teck and how to videos, so please pass my videos on, thank yon ;-)
I have a hearing issue that makes overlapping sounds difficult to understand. Would it be possible to get an upload of this video with no music? I really like how thorough your instruction is. I would love to be able to learn more from your videos.
after my grandpa died I wantr into his garage and found his sears craftmen lathe. I have it all put together and ivbe been dying to use it.
My 10 yo has just gotten into wood Turning. At the moment he is using my smaller metal lathe with a bar installed in place of the tool post. I will probably fabricate and machine a lathe for him. Will to be a great little project. He's loving it so far. He does blacksmithing as well but I still haven't gotten him interested in machining. 😂
Hello Roger. I came across you.as I'm looking for a lathe. You came up.and I really enjoyed it. I will be watching more of your videos, thank you so much 🎉Nice meeting a gentleman very similar to my age .😊
Thanks and welcome
Thank you for sharing and giving this learning experience to me.
Very well done!!
...very well explained, thanks....
You're welcome!
Thank you for this much needed video. It’s wonderful.
You are so welcome!
Good advice I will use if I ever do wood turning
Great video thank you
Glad you enjoyed it
Great watching and learning. Thankyou
Thanks for the video Roger. I ordered a lathe and toolset yesterday, arriving in a few days, so Im browsing for beginners guides and found you. I dont yet understand all the holding methods for workpieces and was curious as to what limits there were to the standard eqipment with the lathe. You have resolved that for me. I will be coming back to this when I work on my first piece to test out the various chisels etc, doing something much like your example. Yes Im a complete beginner, never used a lathe in my 64 years, but dont worry, I like to be careful and have the PPE already.
Best wishes from England.
Great video! I enjoyed it very much. I'm just beginning to learn woodworking and this will definitely help. Thank you very much.
Very helpful thank you! I inherited a lathe from my dad; I am hoping to continue his goblet making :)
That's great!
Thanks for sharing your knowledge! I'm looking to start turning, and this is very useful!
Very welcome!
Great video, I have just purchased my first wood lathe, much info here. thank you
Glad it was helpful!
Very well done video of the basics. Subscribed and look forward to more, thank you for sharing.
Welcome aboard!
Excellent video with a wealth of information, I am looking forward to watching the rest of your video's and I hope to learn a lot. Watching you I could tell that safety is very important a long with proper use of your lathe and tools. One thing that I would like to add for the beginner working with power tools and moving objects, is get into the habit of removing all your Jewelry prior to turning on any equipment.
I believe long sleeves? looE garments cand get entangled??
Fabulous, just found your channel. I’m thinking of buying my first lathe and starting wood turning as I enjoyed it so much at school……a few years ago 😊 Subscribed and will be following closely, thanks again 👍
Welcome aboard!
Thank you. Thorough information. Relaxing listen! Subscribed.
I enjoyed this and found it very helpful! Thanks
Glad it was helpful!
Very nice video thank you
Thank you sir for sharing your expertise.
My pleasure
Thank you for the basics
My pleasure!
Thanks so much for this nice video 🙏🌹🌹👍
Excellent video, thank you.
You are welcome!
I learned recently from some old fellas at a local garage how to do this. I'm going to follow a lot of yoru teachings over theirs. They are "Good Old Boys" who have done it the same way forever, and aren't keen on learning new techniques. Also, they correct me every time I call it a "chisel" and say "It's called a gouge. A chisel is something you hit with a hammer".
Don't sweat the terminology, they can always Ben you for free speech. Even in construction terminology can differ across the country, it gets interesting at times.
Awesome video, thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
Very good video sir really appreciate it
Thank you so much for a really good video . Have subscribed and looking forward to learn so much from you I am a total novice .
Welcome aboard!
Thank you, great help.♥️♥️♥️
You are so welcome!
Thanks for the info, fantastic video
My pleasure!
Thank you
You're welcome
When i was taught how to use a lathe at school in the uk in 1989 we were taught that the edges should be planed into a rounder edge.
Is there a reason for not doing it that way today. Thanks
Fun to watch! Interested in learning how one makes four similar legs. I learned to make a bowl in wood shop class in 8th grade!
Thanks!
Thank you.
Excellent thank you
Any wood can be use??
Nice video! Thanks
Glad you liked it!
thank you for informative video
My pleasure
this is probably late, but it's never too late to learn!
might I add, that you forgot to mention the direction of the turns/rotations..... since this is directed towards Beginners, mentioning the rotation direction would be helpful, as that would be part of the Safety Precautions.
anyways, cheers for sharing!! :D
Good point!
Nice work
Thank you! Cheers!
Bit confused with skew and gouge but eventually worked out the reference
Very nice video.
Thank you very much!
@@rogerwebb9600 It would have been great, if I had had a family member, or a good neighbor such as you so I sit there, listen, help, learn and have fun.
Appreciate the great video, I have been looking into a mini lathe to make pipe tampers.
Btw my last name is Webb aswell
Very cool!
Great video bery helpful for someone wanting to get into turning. Can i ask question i have some cash to spend on lathe but have the option of cheaper one to test see if i like it is that gonna be good way to go then spend more once ive learnt how and what I'm doing?? 🏴👍
So are the gouges shaped that way in order to add stregth to the tool since the rough process involves so much violent force until a more smooth surface is gotten to?
nice good job
Thank you! Cheers!
What brand of lathe is featured in the video? I would like to have a look at this lathe ,it comes with accessories, correct?
good very good
Thanks
Hey roger I’ve watched you before I’m a woodworker but I’m wanting to get into turning wood what size lathe do you suggest starting with
Was that pine that you were turning?
Music reminds me of Kerbal Space Program.
That's because it is ;-))
How do you get the spur drive out??
fair play fella
What brand is the lathe you're using? If it has all those extra attachments in stock, I need this asap!!!
What would be the youngest a person could be to use a lathe, in your opinion.
Great video Roger, very informative. Only one small negative comment, please don't bother with the background music. It's really not needed, I find it distracting.
Sorry about that
Sir, I would like to know the brand name of your chuck set. It must be Australian company but could not find them. Thank you for the great courses. Subscribed!
Hi, I have a link for you.

Thanks for the video. What is the risk with using the skew?
a lot of cutting surface being presented at once against the work piece (a long thin edge) - go in slow , to be used on already rounded areas as show in the video - at least in the way he is using it
Good morning Mr webb ,could please say where I can get me one of that lathes? Possibly the name of it , the price , and do you think that thar particular lathes is suitable for a beginner? And does it sell with tools? Kindly explain. Aren't what you have on your video reliable?
Hi I have a video to help you
ua-cam.com/video/1nmQ48dsfyY/v-deo.html
Another safety concern would be to NEVER wear gloves around the rotating spindle.
Or a ring and sick music
how would i best taper off to make thin top towards middle of length of wood widening to half way? what tool is best?
Hi Roger, Thank you for taking the time to make this video, it has been very useful for me turning wood for the first time. My chisels are going blunt very very quickly, I have started with basic low-cost chisels and i have started with 4-inch fence post so I already know im on the back foot here but what is the reason my chisels are going blunt within minutes. Is it the low cost chisels, the timber or technique or all of these factors?
Hi James, it's probably the steel the chisels are made of, you need chisels made from HSS tool steel.
@@rogerwebb9600 I thought that would be the case. They are a big leap in price. I will keep my eye out for a used set.
Thankyou for your reply 👍
Great video, can you tell the spindle RPM?
I might have missed it but did you say the brand of that lathe?
Not sure what you actually mean by saying "be very careful" does that mean hold it lightly, dont push it in,, is it more dangerous , or does it take too much off??
How do you keep your shop do clean?
Can I make my 4 speed (pulley style) into a variable speed?
Ref the flat gouge that looks like a chisel: you warn that you can “get into trouble” quickly, and say several times to “be careful” - but you don’t explain what the ‘trouble’ is, and you don’t describe what you have to do to ‘be careful’. IOW, tell us what the trouble is that we can get into, and tell us exactly what we have to do to avoid it. ‘Be careful’ is meaningless. And we don’t know the problem we’re trying to avoid.
seems he liked your comment (probably without reading it) - my guess is, a lot of cutting surface being presented at once against the work piece (a long thin edge) - go in slow , to be used on already rounded areas as show in the video - at least in the way he is using it
Can i buy a cnc metal lathe instead of woodturing lathe? For making pool cues

Can you get bigger tool rests..?
Ok this was amazing!! But I have one question, are you in Australia or have sulpher crested cockatoos? Because the bird in the background sounds exactly like ours!
Yep! we have about 300 cockatoo's hear that live in are tree's, we live in Tasmania Australia
@@rogerwebb9600 ah that would make sense, I’m in South Australia. They’re noisy things😂
Hi, What make of lathe is that?
All in this video
ua-cam.com/video/4jXWOEIwLaQ/v-deo.html
Nice beginners video. However, that music is very distracting and makes it hard to keep track of what is going on. Trying to get through it.
Sorry about that
