Replacing the VVT/VTC actuator description of tools used as in video
My mother was experiencing this grinding rattling sound on Startup for about the first 2 to 3 seconds and it would only happen on cold start ups. I called the dealer up and they notified me that vehicle can consume a light amount to a moderate amount of oil plus this, alot them were given extended warranties.
With me being a journeyman mechanic I took it upon myself to figure out what it would take to do the repair fortunately replacing the VVT actuator that I was calling the VTC actuator they corrected me and said it's actually the VVT fixed the issue
Now its hit or miss, 60% of the time this fixes it but the other 40% you have to replace the cam phaser also

    Hey Keto Home,
I asked you questions not too long ago. I bought the part, my car was due for an oil change, told my mechanic to swap this part as well. The problem seems to be fixed.
Thanks so much for this video. More power to you and I wish you good luck and success.

The solenoid is not the problem. The VTC (timing gear sprocket) is the problem. The internal lock-pin will break, which causes the gear to retard itself during engine shut-down. And when you start up the engine after a certain amount of time (due to oil pressure loss), the timing chain is initially loose and rattles against the tensioner until oil pressure forces the timing gear to advance back to the top-dead-center position. The solenoid is not the cause of the failure; it's the internal locking mechanism of the variable timing gear (VTC) that needs to be replaced. The average mechanic could do it in about 4 to 10 hours, depending on experience.

    • @fullcend-tkm73
      @fullcend-tkm73  4 роки тому +2

      Wrong
      It can be either
#1 cause for this failure is lack of maintenance and slugging of oil starving the mechanism causing it to fail....
Even our Honda Dealer 90% of the time do the solenoid first and SOMETIMES have to go further

@@fullcend-tkm73 Not at the Honda dealership I had mine serviced at. My solenoid was changed and the problem only resolved for about 8 months and the noise returned.
I could see how not changing the oil might cause the problem, but very unlikely. The standard repair is the upgraded VTC 25 degree cam gear with a newly designed lock mechanism.
I have seen brand new CR-V's with the problem. So that pretty much nullifies the oil sludge theory. Besides, 0-20 synthetic oil does not sludge.

The solenoid change is a bandaid to a more serious problem, in my opinion. The locking pin on the tim9ng gear is likely damaged. Changing to a new solenoid is a temp fix by holding oil pressure to keep the timing gear in place. The lockpin is designed to do this without oil pressure. This is why many that change the solenoid end up having the problem again. But upgrading the timing gear (VTC) solves it completely.

It's not the solenoid, also called vvt oil control valve. it's the timing chain tentioner causing the cold start rattle. the tensioner looses pressure and the timing chain becomes loose and that's why it rattles until it gain its pressure again. If you have a slapping noise - especially on cold start-up, then the tensioner must be replaced and will fix your problem.

I cant imagine that is a factory setting, as how could they sell accords if they sounded like absolute garbage on start up? Considering buying from rock auto not nappa, im wondering why a new solenoid will still result in the sound returning. Rock auto is about 35 bones vs the napas 70, do you think the fact the nappa is shorter is what made the difference in the sound not returning? Well... now I'm confused. What I've been researching as a VVT Actuator goes in the camshaft and is round metal with teeth and many others say that's what makes the rattling noise on engine start. And I recently found what they call a VVT Actuator Solenoid, which looks like what you're now changing. So now I'm unsure, which part to change first? To see if the rattling stops.

    • @fullcend-tkm73

Vvt actuator is the phaser on the end of the camshaft
The VVt solenoid is what I changed here, sometimes they plug up and don't supply oil properly to the phaser and the phaser rattles on start up
I changed this and it indeed on start up increased the oil supply to the phaser and quit rattling on start up

Hi sir, i have a crv 2002 with the same k24 engine. I just put a JDM engine on my car but a lot of parts they put from my older engine, cuz they say rhose parts are different and dont fit. I believe they even used the old VTC solenoid that you changed on this video. I do sometimes get a rattling sound when it starts and all if the car is revved it rattles a little and goes away. It also ticks/taps sometimes at idle which is more noticable when in stopped in R or D.

They both definitely had an empty space where one could go. Do you know? I was assuming that that specific solenoid is probably used in various vehicles that would require it and mine just didn’t. Good video dude. My only issue is that I had a dealership in Charlotte, NC do this work on my wife's 2012 CRV 4cyl and the noise came back in 90 days. Done tons of research since (which is why I am here). Then checked with the local dealer when I moved to Houston 18 months ago, who told me he did not want to take my money because it simply could not be fixed permanently. He said that motor simply does not have a mechanism to retain oil at the top of the motor. Therefore, the oil drains from the lifters and requires 1-3 seconds to refill the lifters. He and others say it will not damage the engine, but it sounds bad.
However... I did see somewhere along the way that NAPA had changed their version of the part to correct an issue. I noticed that you used a NAPA part. Did it fix the issue long-term?
Lastly, seems like the noise started a while after I started doing the oil changes. She used to go to the dealer. I use Mobile 1 or comparable oil and synthetic filters. However, I have seen a few comments here and there about Honda filters being the cure. Maybe they have some better back flow prevention? Anybody heard similar?

But i noticed you said to someone turn the key for 10 seconds twice and if it still makes the noise then honda is right but if not the valve in this video solves it. my question is Why would the key on solve it as theres no oil pressure till you crank ??? logically its not making sense to me . but maybe im missing something and without the code present adds to the confusion. I tried it and i didnt hear the noise but it was also very warm today any thoughts are appreciated!!!

    • @fullcend-tkm73

So you have to understand that there were multiple revision to this TSB

    • @fullcend-tkm73
      @fullcend-tkm73  3 роки тому +1

There was a young guy that came out and said I'll show you my Rattle and what he did was he would start the rattle would come from the timing area
He then demonstrated after letting the vehicle sit overnight cycling the key sending power to actuators that would normally need power to get oil flow into a certain area so when you start the vehicle that actuator is already in that position and if there was any sludge build-up stopping the actuator from moving, cycling it a few time would dislodge some of that sludge and allow the actuator to open up to allow oil to the phaser immediately
For some people that worked and it would quiet the timing set down on Startup which would indicate theres junk in the oil control solenoid or clogging the pre screen on the front of the motor which I showed in the video
What I did was I changed the solenoid up front because I called Honda and I spoke to the service manager and I told him I was a Master Tech for international and Ford I would like to do the job myself and I asked him for any pointers and he said yeah sometimes it's just the solenoid and screen you don't have to do the whole timing set because people don't maintain their oil properly and they're lazy and they let it go longer and longer and longer and then that actuator gets plugged up gummed up and the screen gets plugged up and that's what's actually causing rattle due to oil flow restriction it's not so much the timing set phaser itself
So I start with the oil control solenoid it's the cheapest it's the least time-consuming and it can save somebody a lot of money if you do that up front
It's a huge thing for a lot of vehicles if you look at my Automotive Channel not this channel where I've got like thousands of videos on this stuff I break it down and I actually show people why things fail the way that they do and it's not so much the manufacturers like people think it's more lack of Maintenance and people being lazy not realizing these five thousand mile oil changes are b******* and they should be done a lot sooner than that

The old Panther platform cars you could beat the s*** out of them and they would last forever but come the end of 2009 to 2010 all the vehicles started going to s***

So this doesn't guarantee that the rattled going to go away this is a huge problem in these engines because these solenoids that I changed so bad and plug up with debris and sludge so and easy step is just replacing the solenoid

this is step one and it typically works

My only concern is I don’t want to get a bad part or something that will cause the same noise again in a few months
    2) If the rattling doesn’t happen when I repeatedly turn the key on off and then actually start the engine. Does that mean it’s just the vvt or could it still be something else? Like the actual vtc aviator or phaser? Thank you for your time! :) Just another owner trying to make their car last!

    • @fullcend-tkm73

I would say if you do the key on key off key on key off thing and it doesn't continue to make noise the solenoid should be your fix but there is nothing guaranteed. I know a lot of people have had great success rate with my video and fixing it this way and if you look in the comments section you'll see all kinds of different people say guess it does fix it no it doesn't fix it and then you got people that claim to be professionals
Really at the end of the day I think paying the little bit of money and taking the little bit of time to change the solenoid and then change your oil and filter with a good quality oil and filter and it fixes your problem for another year or maybe even two years like my parents car they're still not having problems after I change the solenoid it's worth it

If you had the actuator itself replaced which is built on to the camshaft then I would replace the solenoid which is the one that I have in the video here I called the actuator because it was listed in the parts catalog at Napa and AutoZone is that but it's really not that

The Next Step would be the actuator itself attached to the camshaft but before I do that I would get a high quality oil filter that has a anti drain back diaphragm in the end of it not a cheap one but a higher-quality one ( the higher-quality ones typically have the diaphragm built in ) they typically all have the anti drain back diaphragm..... I've heard of people doing a good oil change and putting a high quality filter on and that helping but I don't know for sure that that's going to work in your situation... normally when the solenoid doesn't fix it, the actuator on the camshaft itself actually has to be changed

The car still runs fine (in fact the performance feels a bit better) however on the first start-up after replacing it, the rattling noise still happened when I started it up. +SpeedsMcRonalds sometimes that rattling noise could really be the timing chain itself is worn out and needs to be replaced it just all depends every situation is different most of the time the actuator alone and fixes it and increases the performance. Sometimes putting a oil filter with an anti Flowback rubber diaphragm in the top of it helps, and sometimes the cam that's actually on the side of the cam shaft itself is worn you just have to determine what it is.

Even though it's under Honda CRV all of those 2.4 L had similar situations where the VTC actuator was the culprit but if the VTC actuator doesn't fix it chances are its the phaser itself

@T T The sound is from the front. This sound happen 1.5 yrs ago, the dealer change a part. Fortunately my car was still under warranty. Now I have this sound again. The part is not expensive, the most expensive is labour. They need 2 days to fix it, the mechanic told me they need to take out the engine and then take out the timing chain to change the parts. That why if this is not under warranty, it will cost around 1000-1500 CAD.

Ok sweet, with mine it’s only on start up. It makes the noise when it cold & hot. So it isn’t a weather thing.
