  • How exactly does the Sultanate of Brunei fit into this already convoluted conflict involving Malaysia, the Philippines, and the Sultanate of Sulu? Let’s dive into the precolonial history that directly led to the present-day dispute over Sabah. Find out how a family feud over cockfighting led to a civil war that destroyed the Brunei Empire, and eventually to centuries of disputed sovereignty in North Borneo.

Eventhough the history of this particular issue is quite messy and complicated, it really emphasized to me the importance of us Filipinos learning more in-depth the particular history of other regions in the Philippines. I am not discounting the importance of Jose Rizal and other major players in the Philippine Revolution but learning about Sulu Sultanate puts our country more in context within Southeast Asia. Marginalized histories like this gives our national consciousness more depth and perspective which not only makes us rooted but connects our country to a wider geopolitical context. Now the galleon trade in Mexico felt more like a long distance relationship that didn't last but Brunei, Malaysia and Indonesia were and still are our neighbours of more importance than Mexico would ever be.

Much better if you will also tackle about the present day people of Sabah; specially the indigenous (Kadazan, Murut, Bajau, Bisaya (not those from Philippines), Suluk/Tausug, Bruneian Malay, Lundayeh, Rungus, etc ). Hi Kirby, I didn't expect Sultanate of Ternate being mentioned here. As a descendant I'm intrigued. I did read somewhere long time ago that Sultanate of Ternate had some involvement in Brunei civil war, but I don't know to what extent exactly. One source said Ternate also sent some troops (probably under the banner of their ally Maguindanao).

    • @KirbyAraullo
      @KirbyAraullo  Рік тому +7

Yeah! Probably under the banner of Maguindanao. Oral traditions and earlier historians also mentioned how the royal family of Luzon (my ancestors) is also related to the royal family of Ternate 😊 I'm still doing more research about how exactly they were related.

@@KirbyAraullo Then, we are distant cousins after all, hahaha 😀
Ternate is very underrated indeed, even in Indonesian history. Although Ternate - under Sultan Baabullah - was the first and the only sultanate in Indonesia ever achieved total victory against European power, it's only a couple of years ago that Indonesian government officially recognized Sultan Baabullah of Ternate as National Hero.
Ternate and Maguindanao were very close in the past. It is sad that Colonial powers had divided our interconnected history, even created myth to divide our people even further. One local legend in Ternate and surrounding islands is about the "Moro People" (the name sounds familiar, right?), who according to oral tradition, reside in other realm and like to kidnap human. Later when I learn more about history I concluded that this legend most probably made up by the Colonials to indoctrinate the Moluccans that their northern brothers are evil and dangerous.
By the way, I'm aware that there's a place in Cavite, Philippines named Ternate which was erected by migrants from Ternate, and I had also read about Ternatan attack on Dapitan Kingdom in Bohol in 1500s.
I hope you can elaborate more history on them someday. 🙏

@@julkeplehjaafar5221 The founders of the sultanates of Brunei, Sulu and Maguindanao were brothers. The eldest established Brunei, the second, Sulu and the bunso a.k.a the youngest became the first sultan of maguindanao - Sharif Kabungsuan. They were the grandchildren of the sultan of Johor - Sultan Iskandar Thul Karnayn who married off his daughter to a descendant of Prophet Mohammed - Shariff Ali Zainul Abidin from Hadramut of modern day Yemen. You see, some families still actually keep a written record of their geneologies in tarsilas. Sultan Kudarat son of Buwisan son of Bangkaya son of Makaalang son of Kabungsuan as mentioned in the video was already 5 generations down from Kabungsuan. There was a sultan in sulu in the 1650s. Also on a sidenote, Mt. Everest is in Asia. Also, land wasn't valued then as it is now. It was more about control of sea lanes and trade routes and headcounts of both slaves and citizens - at least on this part of the world at that time.

@@de_sodavibe9822 i think you presume Philippines was too foreign for sabahans.. the debate here was the disputes of malaysia vs Sultanate of Sulu. As explained in the video, historically speaking, Sulu has a strong claim to Sabah territory. And within our constitution, all territories of Sultanate of Sulu are now under the sovereignty of the Republic of the Philippines.
Yes, not everyone are from Sulu just like not all malaysians are from sarawak.. am i wrong? For myself, I am ethnically half tagalog and half bisaya (with spanish and chinese blood respectively) without any link to Sulu people or from north borneo but as I have said, all territories of Sultanate of Sulu are under Philippines after they are defeated by US forces.. Philippines is also a nation with different ethnicity just like malaysia and indonesia...
If we do what you just said that sabah should be for indigenous people or local people of sabah, then both malaysia and Philippines should not claim sabah and recognized them as a sovereign country. But with that, it will also put more divide to other separatist groups who also wants to form their own government.. more than likely, we will go back to how things before the pre-colonial era where there are multiple nations in all archipelago of malaysia, indonesia, and the Philippines...
And we cant disregard the claims of sultans because these are the reasons countries have borders today around the world.

    • @de_sodavibe9822
      @de_sodavibe9822 Рік тому +8

@@yyy-zn6xu Yeah, as your constitution indeed said that all of Sulu sultanate territory is part of Phillipines. Indeed it is strong claim as it has legal history that Sultan has his power extent over half of Sabah and some of Kalimantan. But in the agreement 1878, it is stated Sultan at that time, grant and ceded it territories to the British company and at the same time must pay compensation for the Sultan and his descendants in certain amount annually. And it being back up in 1903 agreement, to clear the term of "pajakan" as being translated into grant and ceded. Cobbold commision, 1962, already proved that Sabahan people want to be part of Malaysia federation and to be granted autonomous state. So it does not matter on what claim you are using, we are using agreement and majority of polls as prove that Sabah has right to be part of Malaysia.
And it such BS when you guys only claim sulu territories in Malaysia but not included the territories under Indonesia. Why? You scared? If Sulu sultanate territories is part of Phillipines, then prove it and make a claim for all of them.

Rich history and You provided us and proud of them. I’m not on religious side (religious beliefs where foreign traders arrived) but the History and Culture. I don’t like faction but the truth. Such examples are that the earliest historian like Sir Stamford Raffles (History of Java) in 1830 said it is only a claim. Mohd Jamil Al-Sufri (prominent Brunei’s historian) published “Tarsilah Brunei II: 1997 Period of Splendour and Fame” (Malay version) also denied Sulu claim. On 29 Sep 2022, lawyers for the Sultanate heirs sought permission from a court in the Netherlands to enforce the arbitration ruling on Malaysia. Before it was in Spain, France, and Luxembourg. They been hopping from one court to another (Spain, France, and Luxembourg) trying their luck. If they have an arbitration agreement or clause, then one court is good enough as stipulated under the New York Convention 1958.
As of the 1st of January 2015, the New Dutch Arbitration Act entered into force, replacing the Dutch Arbitration Act of 1986. The New 2015 Act is still contained in book 4 (arts 1020-1077) of the Dutch Code of Civil Procedure (DCCP). For an arbitration agreement to be valid under Dutch law, the dispute that must be settled must arise out of a contractual legal relationship (article 1020 DCCP). The arbitration agreement must be in writing. Inclusion of the arbitral agreement in general terms and conditions may not suffice.
Even under Section 4 of the RA 876, PH Arbitration Law require an arbitration agreement or clause. Do Sulu, have it?

Topic: “A friendly reminder to us all federalists, There is a right to Private Property(The Ph Government cant easily said or declare Sabah as a public property. The French Court says it is owned by the heirs.)”.
Part 2 Official statement :Our win is a matter of private ownership(of the land & natural resource) and commercial lease & NOT an arbitration about sovereignty. Regardless if it will be the dominion of the 2 claimants(Malaysia & Ph as they both claimed) one thing is for sure..THE HEIRS HAD THE RIGHT TO PRIVATE PROPERTY. Period.”
Source: Pro federal Sultan Muedzul-Lail Tan Kiram of The Royal House of Sulu
Fact: The heirs of sultan of sulu who won an arbitration dispute against Malaysia in February over a 2 centuries old deal on Sabah are NOT ASKING FOR THE PHILIPPINE GOVERNMENT’S ASSISTANCE IN ENFORCING THE ARBITRAL AWARD, their London based counsel said.
    Part 1
Is sulu the next monarchist state under federalism(with the Kiram as the sole family? 🧐🧐🧐 Will the 15 Billion dollar win and the acknowledgement of Kiram heirs private ownership will finally make the Philippine government to rethink how it treated the heirs(especially in Aquino’s time. Forsaken at Sabah standoff) of the late Sultan Moh. Mahakuttah kiram(Father of Sultan Muedzul-Lail Tan Kiram )??
    ---
Regarding Philippine Federalism & some opinions & views: The 2 things that keep japan stable is the parliament with the help of Monarch & Prime Minister:
1.) The crown- monarchs as the “Political neutral” head of state(read: Arbiter). A hereditary position not beholden to election or partisan politics. An institution of identity that acts as a refuge (against never ending change/election). Abode of unity and tradition under “conservatism or traditionalism”.
2.) Prime minister- The aspect of never ending change(election) and partisan politics. An institution of “Change”. Abode of new ideas. Under the banner of “Liberalism or modernism”.
These 2 recipes are dominant in parliamentary countries...(especially in Europe). Other countries with this kind of recipes are Bhutan, Thailand, Cambodia, Tonga, & KwaZulu.
Fact: There is new stories arising that some people in Mindanao(especially in Sulu. The last crown prince Sultan Muedzul Lail tan kiram. Son of Mahakota kiram, last Sultan recognised by Philippine Government) are open to a secular state but with a touch of traditionalism(Constitutional Monarchy). Are we ready just in case? Are we The next “Malaysia with Sultans(kings), Sultanas(Queens), Datus(princes), & Dayangs(princesses). 😱😱🧐🧐♥️♥️♥️
Reference: French arbitration orders Malaysia to pay Sultan heirs declaring Sabah as a private property & not government lease(nor a government property).
    ________
Federal Malaysia is a member or cosignatory of New York convention. Meaning in 167 countries the assets and the arbitration(with order) can be implemented without delay. The French Court awarded nearly USD$15billions to these Sulu heirs. The assets seized so far valued at only USD$2billions. So potentially many more Malaysian assets in 167 countries around the world are at risk. The latest arbitration (with order) ruled that Sabah is a private lease of Sulu Sultan’s. A right of lease that is inherited by his heirs. Meaning it is not a lease or property of Malaysia(since before) & Philippines(as of now).
exactly thats why the last paragraph says that its a private ownership and private elase and not a public property and government lease. The Ph can claim territory and sovereign claim but not right to private property. These past days BBM did not gived any comment(before his sona) because according to his spokepersons the arbitration with order is a private ownership and not a matter of sovereignty. meaning if ph will pressed the claim they(government) must have another legal arbitration battle. The ph cannot easily use the arbitration regarding the private ownership because private property is different in public property. the decision is also a matter of inheritance and not territorial dispute(although malaysia claimed it damage the malay sovereignty). Malaysia managed to have a stay order BUT it is only applicable in france and not to 100 plus co new york co signatory members. Malaysia will truly find it hard to persuade justice to favour them. A tax perhaps but not forced acquisition(regardless if with referendum). The rights of these heirs is protected by new york convention. same here. I agree with the decision. I don’t agree in taxing the heirs. It’s their land(in my opinion) and they have the award without the help of government(by pursuing it privately). ♥️👍🏻👍🏻

Propriety and sovereignty are different things. They only wanted money and were happy to agree when the British offered him money. The Spanish colonial government only saw the Sultan as a pirate. Please read the 1915 agreement between the Sultan and US. By right the British should stop paying the Sultan after the 1915 agreement. After the Sultan saw the booming economy of Sabah, he wanted to claim Sabah to be part of the Philippines. Funny is that we were taught that Puteri Lela Menchanai is a Bisayan from Jawa. Because back then we used a somewhat similar system to the Hindu Caste System. Kshatriya = Cheteria, Vaishyas/Vaisya = Bisaya, which will then be divided into Dusun and Kedayan. It wouldn't be the first mistake though, like first Sultan of Brunei married to a princess from Johor, even though Johor and the empire before that, Melaka has not yet existed. But they did state that she came from Tumasik or what is now called Singapore. So it was most likely the predecessor of the 2 empires/kingdoms.
Oh, and try to have a read on Ong Sum Ping and Kinabatangan (East Sabah) and the fight for the crown between Xia Wen (Suriawang) and Awang Semaun against Sultan Ahmad/Pateh Berbai and Ong Sum Ping. It's pretty interesting. And the end plot was the child of Pateh Berbai and niece of Ong Sum Ping, Puteri Ratna Kesuma, stormed the palace of Ong Sum Ping, but before capturing/taking Ong Sum Ping out, he ended his own life.

    Twisted.
Result from pulau chermin war, BRUNEI never approved transfer of northern borneo to sulu. SULU loot the dead sultan mubin palace and took away his son.
There was no documented agreement, pointing Brunei to give/surrender northern borneo to sultan of sulu. IF IT was officially declared, then WHERE is the document/agreement? Those day, they all ready know how to documents things!!
Even the Sultan of Brunei, books and museum declared that northern of Borneo was never given to sulu sultanate. After the war, sultanate of sulu makes northern of borneo, as a place of his SLAVE supply area, where LOCALS which are not SULUS, kidnapped to be sold to Taosug datus in jolo.
That era, Northern of Borneo was infested with the pirates which comes from JOLO taosug, iranun, bajau and this is not according to colonial perspective, because JOLO pirates not only make northern borneo as it place of slaves supplies, they went as far as the straits of Malacca (Melaka,Malaysia), Sulawesi(indonesia) and kidnap locals which was muslims and villagers.
THE POINT that admin mentioned, " the sulu cousin failed to look after northern Borneo after the pulau chermin war" NEVER TOOK PLACE! No taosug dato settled in northern borneo, only iranun and bajau and etc pirates controlling the slave trade.
LOCALS of northern of borneo such as ida'an murut and dusun was the people who managed the land of northern borneo.
UNTIL 1877, the real owner of northern borneo which is the Sultan of Brunei sold it to???
