I decided to treat myself to the entire collection of 24 Derwent Drawing Pencils for Christmas! In this video I'll open them for the first time, swatch each one, and share my first impressions of them. I'll also experiment with a few of the colours to see how well they layer on top of each other. These are highly lightfast, British made pencils, with a wonderful creamy feel and texture. The colour selection in this tin is very interesting as it contains only natural, earthy, and muted colours. These are perfect for nature, landscape, and wildlife subjects, and are generally the type of colours I'm most drawn to using in my work. The range of sepia tones is great too! Here are the colours I swatched in order: Light Sienna, Solway Blue, Ink Blue, Smoke Blue, Pale Cedar, Green Shadow, Crag Green, Olive Earth, Warm Earth, Brown Ochre, Wheat, Yellow Ochre, Sepia (Red), Mars Orange, Sanguine, Venetian Red, Terracotta, Mars Violet, Ruby Earth, Chocolate, Ivory Black, Warm Grey, Cool Grey, and Chinese White.
After everyone’s rave reviews I also caved and ordered them! They don’t offer them open stock in Canada that I know of, so the fact the the tin has such unique colours was a selling point for me. Please keep these cute switches in your future videos! So aesthetically pleasing
I'm so pleased that you've ordered them - they're really lovely pencils! Let me know what you think when they arrive. I'll definitely swatch like this in the future, it's a lot more fun!
They are among my absolute favorite pencils and It looks like these colors really fit your palette! Dear Natasha, you definitely deserve more subscribers, your videos are great 🤍
Thank you so much for your kind words, I really appreciate them! ♡ I think that these pencils are going to be one of my 'go to' pencils now, alongside my Luminance and Polychromos!
I have been wanting this set, yet holding off, for almost a year. When my husband asked what I wanted for our anniversary this month, I requested these pencils along with a nice dinner. Something for each of us. I love to draw/color/paint. He loves food. Thank you for sharing this great video.
My set will be delivered tonight and I can't wait!!! After the graphitint I have fallen in love with Derwent pencils. They are just.... luxurious and moody. Love love love.
I've never tried Derwent products, but this video actually made me go out & order this set basically right after watching 😂 I love my Faber Castells but your observations on Derwent's color palette & your layering examples really convinced me to try these out. Thank you for the video, I'm very excited to try these - and excited to see you use these in some future videos, I think they fit your style beautifully 😊
I think you're going to love them! I'll have to do a follow-up video where I show how I'm using them in my work. Enjoy the pencils and let me know how you get on with them!
@@NatashaNewtonArt I’m ordering 5 colors from the open stock, unfortunately they’re running out of mars violet. I believe they also have it in other lines like lightfast or procolour.

I loved the layering examples, it's so useful, and the color palette is sublime. I'm looking forward to your adventures trying these with watercolor, I'd be interested in how they layer over & under watercolor and how they act with water in general. Thanks so much for sharing these!
Thank you! I'll definitely film a follow-up video to show how I'm using them in my work. I can't get over how beautiful and unique this colour palette is.
Natasha, thanks for this video. I have and ❤️the 12-pencil set and after watching you swatch out all the colors, I just ordered one each of the rest of these beautiful pencils.
You're going to love them, Linda! I can't choose a favourite as they're all so beautiful but I do especially love the Mars Violet, Ink Blue, Solway Blue, the greens...the yellow ochre is really special too...oh, and the sepia tones...no, I can't choose! 😉
A beautifully filmed review ✨ I really love the colour palette of this set of Derwent pencils ✏️ perfect for drawing from nature, 🌿 I really enjoyed the way you swatched them as it gives us a good feel for how it might be to work with them. ✍️ 🎨 Thank you for another great film 🎞 🎥🍿✨
This vlog was very relaxing, but inspiring at the same time. The music was lovely too, with enough cheekiness that I didn't feel sleepy, lol! Now I want to go and do some swatching of my own as I listen to your podcast with Melanie Chadwick...I've been saving it as a treat!!💝 Love your work and Happy, Healthy New Year!
Thank you Natasha. It is a very good and helpful test. I love this pencils so much, drawing with them makes me happy. The mine doesn’t break, and the pencils lie very well in the hand because they are thicker
Fantastic video…your lovely swatching is so inspiring…I treated myself to some of these too and am looking forward to opening them up…..question- what journal are you working in?
I am a fan of Derwent along with Lyra and Prisma but these lovelies are my very favorite. Just wish there were more colors. Love the Jazz a favorite of mine too- puts me in the mood for creative thought. Drawing with a dog at my side and Jazz in my ear what could life offer. Great ideas for swatching one can really see the possibilities these pencils offer. There is a tree on my property I am in love with, you have inspired me to photographic it and put it on the top of my to do list.

A couple of people mentioned these in my stream on Thursday and I had never heard of them! They look so nice though, but I've already bought a bunch of pencils this month so they may be going on the Christmas list!
Hi from Canada! I discovered you with this video by chance and I'm glad I did! I really liked the way you did this review and wasn't even looking into buying coloured pencils but I saw them on sale today and decided to order them. I hope you create something with them soon as a follow up to this video, I'd love to see that.

Natasha, this indeed is a very relaxing video and those are some wonderful pencils, I just got them myself, did not swatch them yet. Wanted to ask you what paper is that sketchbook if you know. Of course I’m in US so I might find the same, but especially for these pencils I would need some nice thick textured paper, maybe even a hot press watercolor paper. Great video and music too 😊
Thanks Judith! This is just a Royal Talens Art Creation sketchbook with smooth paper. Hot press watercolour paper is great for these pencils! I've used Arches before.
These look amazing. Do you think they layer well because of the wax content? Do they smudge? The colour palette is wonderful. Definitely on my birthday list for February 😊
I think that the wax content is probably the reason they layer well, but yes, they do smudge a little and I noticed some colour transfer from one page on to another in my sketchbook. But I notice this with Luminance too. Generally though, I think I'll be using these for finished drawings rather than sketchbook work (although yesterday I filmed a video where I filled a double page in my sketchbook with them, which will be uploaded soon!). I'd definitely recommend them though; they're beautiful pencils.
