  • Welcome to another Sketchbook Time, a series of videos where you'll get to see me working in my sketchbooks! Sometimes I'm drawing something specific, sometimes I'm swatching different colours/palettes, and sometimes I'm just having fun! You can choose to draw, paint or create along with me, working on your own projects as I chat to you in the background, or just lose yourself in these relaxing videos and the satisfaction of watching a page or two of a sketchbook being filled. I hope that they inspire you to get your own sketchbook out and allow yourself the time to play and experiment too!
    This time I'm using my new tin of 24 Derwent Drawing Pencils to fill a double page spread with patterns, purely for fun and to test out these pencils a little more.

    Hello Natasha! I don't think you need to worry about "umms and uhhs" because it just shows that you're thinking, and that equals calm, thoughtful content. I've always found your commentary to be just like having tea with a friend while also having sketchbook time together- very congenial! So please keep going, and only do what you want to do. I think you'll find we won't mind a less than "perfect" delivery!😊💗

      Thanks so much for your comment, Leah! It's lovely that you feel that way as that's what I'd like my videos to feel like. I'm starting to think more and more that imperfection and 'realness' is better than 'perfection' anyway. It definitely means that editing will be faster! ;) x

    I spray some of my pages with Krylon Kamar Varnish to keep them from smearing. Seems to work ok. It smells for a couple of days, but that goes away. I’ve also used parchment paper (the kind used for baking) between pages. I tape it at the top. This works like a charm. I would bet that tissue paper or tracing paper would work as well. I just got my box of Derwent Drawing pencils this week and am pretty excited to try them out soon! They’re so gorgeous! 😊

    I just got these pencils. These soft muted colors fly me to the Moon!!! I'm not a pencil maker sooo, I may be incorrect but I think they transfer one page to another because they are highly pigmented and lay down like butter. To me, they look like velvet. Fixatives are invaluable. I watch Coloring with Alena. She uses them alot. I love that aggressive Russian style she has and her color combinations are amazing. 💮❣💮

    Thank you so much for your lovely videos. I’ve wanted to buy these pencils for quite awhile, but I kept hesitating. After watching your previous video, well...they’ll be here on Wednesday. Hi,This is an older video now, but i often watch it as i love these pencils, wanted them for years but other things keep cropping up and they get forgotten . I will get these in the next couple of months no matter what. I have about 3 or 4 but I just love the sanguine and terracotta shades. Keep a piece of greaseproof/freezer paper between your pages or just when drawing to stop the transference. It's an inexpensive alternative but gives ut a vintage feel as older photo albums always had a sheet separating the pages of photographs. You can use permanent ink and draw or stamp your own designs on this paper to make it more attractive and personal. I love lino printing too so it's nice to make your own designs, in your case, maybe bird stamps in your style. You don't need to use printing ink, thy work just as well will a Stayzon permanent ink pad which is available in a ton of different colours. Your style of art would look amazing using lino printing and it's so relaxing, you can get printing ink in your colour pallette shades, from printing suppliers or Jacksons. Amazon tends to keep just primary colours but wedgewood blue and green look beautiful when printed.

    I love your videos ... because you are a great artist and because you are so transparent, real, and honest. Keep up the great videos ... just as they are. With regard to pencil transference, between pages, I don't use fixative. I just put a piece of white copy paper, under the page I'm working on so that if the pressure of drawing causes transference it only affects the piece of copy paper and not the drawing or page, of my sketchbook, below the page I'm working on.

I haven't tried it myself so can't say for sure - perhaps worth a go?! I tried the sheets of paper between but they kept falling out and when they moved they would sometimes smudge it a bit. Hi Natasha wonderful page! I use tissue paper between the pages of my sketchbook, either attached with washi or just loosely. And this way I can utilize tissue paper that comes as a wrapper for items I buy, the advantage is that it doesn’t matter really if it is bit ripped or has creases a bit, and it doesn’t bulk up the book like a normal paper would. I usually cut the wrapping paper down to sheets in the size bit smaller then the sketchbook and store them in an envelope and then pull them out when i turn the page. Hope this helps. In me experience fixative works on loose sheets and maybe if you pass hand over the page it wouldn’t smudge but i don’t think it really helps with transferring by pressure.

    • @NatashaNewtonArt
      @NatashaNewtonArt  3 роки тому

      Thanks so much for the tips Mia, that's really helpful! You may be right about the fixative not helping if it's transferring by pressure. I assumed it would help with that but possibly not. I'm very wary of using fixative in my sketchbook after reading some of the other comments, so I think I'm going to go with using a couple of sheets of thick paper in between whenever I work on a double page, and I hope that will solve the problem! Great idea about the tissue paper. Thanks again!

    Glassine or tracing paper is great to put between the pages. Fixative can be a little unpredictable and spotty, and doesn’t always stick well to wax. Some people use mod podge a type of water-based sealant… But I think glassine works the best

    Happy New Year, Natasha! 🎆🥰😘🧡
    I have sawed off the handle of a round paint brush (for decorating doors, windows etc.) and use that for small areas. But mostly I use an artist's broom with very soft bristles to dust off anyting on my desk.
    For the transfer of colour i don't really have a tip other than just using one side of the sketchbook if you always press hard.
    As far as the "umms and ahs" goes, I really don't mind them in your videos. It seems natural to me. However, I do mind them in my videos! I always remind myself of the fact that editing takes the longest out of the whole video making process according to some of the biggest YTers (not that my videos are anywhere near their standard or yours for that matter). I enjoy all your videos and look forward to more this year.
    Oh, the i-cards can be added at the end when you choose the videos showing at the final minute of the video. You can also add them later but I am not sure how because that has changed recently.

      Hi Chrissie, Happy New Year to you too! 💖 I think I need a soft little brush by the sound of it! I'm going to give the fixative a try, but other than that I may just have to accept that I work on one side only (but I do love a double page spread!). ;) As for the umming and ahhhing - it's so difficult to listen to a recording of yourself, isn't it?! I think we all get hyper critical of ourselves sometimes, and like you said, what we don't mind in others, we criticise ourselves for. Editing takes me forever sometimes. I have no idea how some UA-camrs produce a video per day (I guess that must be pretty much all they do each day perhaps?). Thanks for the info about the i-cards too - I will give it a go!

    This may be a veery fringe media, but if you like muted soft colors, Kuretake Zig Real Brush put out recently a collection called smoky colors. There is a UA-cam channel from Japan called Kaiteki Art that demo that smaller set.

    I should have said earlier, just let it be natural! I know how difficult it is to talk and do something, my attention is on my active and therefore quite a few ummm and pauses happen. I love your videos and, of course, artwork.

    I stick copy paper or tracing paper between the pages. Fixative definitely works but I hate using it because of the fumes and I don't always have the time to go outside to spray a page. There is a product called spectrafix that is a liquid fixative, I haven't used it but I've heard others have had good results.

  • @SarahBaileyArts

    To prevent drawing transfer, I do use Kamar Varnish, it's stinky but it works on anything including watercolor and gouache. However I'm not sure that works if you're coloring on the backside of another drawing, in that case I might just stick some tracing or parchment paper between the pages for extra assurance.

    • @NatashaNewtonArt
      @NatashaNewtonArt  3 роки тому

      Thanks Sarah, I've never heard of Kamar Varnish! I have some Daler-Rowney Perfix fixative so I'm going to give that a go (I haven't used it yet) and see if it helps. Fingers crossed!

    Hi Natasha, I don't know if someone has already told you, but as a fixative for pastels and chalks it works well even a simple hairspray - it does not have the terrible smell that professional fixatives for art have and it costs very little.
    About your "hm" I love them, don't cut please. Those videos all cut, and cut, and cut are so cold, almost stressfull. Instead yours are so kind and cozy. Have a lovely evening :)

      Hi Tiziana, thank you for such a lovely comment! I'm so pleased that my videos come across as being kind and cozy - that's exactly how I'd wish for them to be! It's funny because I remember using hairspray to seal charcoal drawings when I was at school, and though about this again the other day, but was unsure of the archival properties and whether it would effect the artwork in years to come? I'm not sure of the answer to that! Thank you again, and I hope you're having a good start to 2021! x

    regarding the transfer problem, some people uses baking paper in between pages....

  • @lindatoolsema3487
    @lindatoolsema3487 3 роки тому

    Colour pencil seems to transfer mostly when drawing on the next page (or the one after that). I cut two pieces of fairly thick drawing paper to the size of my sketchbook and keep them between the last two spreads. I don’t use fixative in my sketchbook for several reasons, the most important (and unexpected) one being that it seems to change the properties of the paper, also on the backside, as I found out doing an ink drawing on the back of a page sprayed with fixative - the ink bled right through the paper which never happened to me without fixative!

      Thanks so much for the warning, Linda! This has definitely put me off using fixative in my sketchbook. I'm glad I didn't try it before reading this. I think I'm going to go with the thick paper between pages while I'm working.
