Thank you so much for sharing your process. I’ve attempted mixed media and it looks like something I would’ve done when I was a toddler lol 😂

You are most welcome! haha, it can be like that sometimes! Keep going, you will get there (and remember that it might not be you at all....every painting goes through an ugly stage!): Deb xx

I popped in to see what was here because I just acquired a 24 set of these heavenly (or really, earthy) pencils, and I like to see what folks are doing with them. I stayed til the end -- a beautiful demonstration of under-layer and upper detail. I admire your instincts about when to wait and keep muddling through, and when to lay the tools down. I struggle with that myself, mostly lack of confidence that I hope experience will help.
I smiled about the idea of "ugly stage," like an awkward, half-civilized teenager. Used to call the same feeling "making a carpet for the bird cage." I like this finished result very much, and I had the feeling of "finished" right about when you did. I am subscribing to see more of your work and demonstration skill. 😊

Thank you! These really are lovely pencils and Derwent just seem to get the colours right. I adore the layers that i get to work with in mixed media art. Haha- thou shallt not fiddle should be an eleventh commandment! many a good sketch has been ruined with just one more stroke. Yep, it really is that gawky stage that we would rather not go through (love 'making a carpet for the birdcage!). Art like anything else worth doing is about training your skill and your instincts. You will know just when to step away. Deb xx

I appreciate your comment about the “ugly stage” or sometimes it’s just not your day. Sometimes, especially when I’m practicing a newish technique, I feel like I’ve lost all ability. Repeated messes are sometimes hard on the confidence. Love the end results you get!

I wonder how many good paintings (not to mention good artists) are lost in the ugly stage! More should be said about it so that artists do not lose confidence, especially with a new technique. I am so pleased that you enjoyed the end result of my Mess :D Deb xx

Beautiful, and I really appreciate your style of palette. What brand of gouasche are you using here? I’ve no experience with that medium yet.

Thank you! I have a few different brands. Talens is a favourite but Lefranc Bourgeous is gorgeous too and I have some Holbein in the mix. Any good name and artist's quality paint will give you a good experience. Debxx

I bought the drawing set a couple of weeks ago to compliment the graphitint set and oh boy.... aren't these the most delicious moody creamy colours! I might have become very biased though because everything Derwent makes is fabulous and I want to own all their sets. I don't think I will be switching to another brand any time soon. Love love love! Also love your video, I'm a big fan of mixed media as well, you're one of my fav. creators at the moment. Your style is very unique. Thanks for uploading!

Aw thank you, that is so nice of you to say! I love Derwent too- in my eyes they can do no wrong. I think that it might be time to do a Graphitint Fave 5 too....D xx

Crazy beautiful and so relaxed! I have ordered this pencil set and can’t wait to give this a go with gouache. Q. Do you need a special, sharpener for these soft pencils?

Thank you so much! You will love them with gouache, the Derwent Drawing colours and textures are unbeatable. I use my Kum pencil sharpener with great results but some pencils (individual personalities it seems) can be a problem and a really skarp craft knife is good for these. Only happens occasionally. Have fun! Deb xx
