Well, Elizabeth, making some texture plates is going to be fun, along with the making of beautiful papers. My 3 yr old granddaughter, with my supervision, will have a blast making the papers, rubbing over the plates and making a grand mess with a wet paint brush. She is fearless making art.
I think it’s amazing that you are encouraging your three year old granddaughter, to make art, and to make a mess! That’s wonderful. Yes, the texture plates are easy to make, and will give you hours of fun!
I own many, many rubbing plates. But then so does anyone who has lots of embossing folders or dies. All of these paper crafting tools make nice rubbing plates. Even stamps work. And stencils and masks for that matter. But I was thinking of the plates made specifically for frottage. It was popular for a while in quilting. So I bought a bunch of Cedar Canyon plates (probably my favorite). But also a company called Ten Seconds Studio made plates for metal embossing, so did Walnut Hollow come to think of it. Even Fiskars did, though I no longer remember why. I think Royco too. Periodically rubbing plates come out that are aimed at kids. They are out there if you look. I have actually used rice paper for this purpose but with gel plates. Though I didn’t achieve the level of resist I was intending. I ended up liking a rubbing over the top of a dry gel print much better. But I wasn’t using paint with such a low viscosity. Now I want to try it. I shall have to see if Golden High Flow works well on a gel plate. Ooooh ooooh ooh, or Jacquard’s Dye-n-flow. Which makes me think of Shiva Paint Sticks (oil paint in crayon form). I already know that Shiva perfectly resists Dye-n-flow on fabric. That’s something I tried years ago, but didn’t think to try it on paper. Rice paper would make a good choice because of Dye-n-flow’s low viscosity. But I will have to wait for Shiva to cure. That’s the draw back, it won’t be as immediate as a wax based crayon. I also wasn’t using a beeswax crayons with my gel prints. I tried oil pastels, Crayola, and Neo Color I. Absolutely loved the dreamy creaminess of Neo Color I over gel prints. I easily found beeswax crayons on Amazon so I’m going to give it a whirl. There’s something called Honeysticks which are aimed at toddlers. They are big and fat so great for rubbings; colorant is food grade so that might be iffy. The other thought I had while watching this video is that while I haven’t specifically used texture paste to make a rubbing plate, I’ve certainly made lots of stuff with texture pastes so there’s nothing to stop me from using art journal pages and what have you. No waiting for paste to dry. I just love Elizabeth’s brilliant ideas, don’t you?
Very cool and fun! Not what I thought you were going to do. I thought you were going to use the crayon rubbing papers to wax resist on the gel plate. Love this technique also
Thank you for sharing this incredible new technique!!! The color & visual texture possibilities seem endless. BTW, it would be great to see the papers once they are dry.
I absolutely love, love, LOVED this lesson Elizabeth...cant wait to try this out. I so enjoy you and cant thank you enough for sharing your brilliance and ideas with us all.
Wow, I just opened my February envelope of Painted Papers from your Papers of the Month subscription and was SO EXCITED to find that you had included FOUR of the cardstock stencil templates in addition to the regular amount of beautiful painted papers. Your included note let me know I could use those as texture plates like in this video or enjoy them as stencils or accent pieces like on the raven. For anyone who hasn't considered Elizabeth's Paper of the Month club, I highly recommend it! Such a variety of papers every month!
Fabulous!!! Thank you! I am so glad you popped up in my feed again! I especially loved that last color combo with the blues and maroon with yellows! It reminds me of sari remnants I've had. Years ago I bought some metallic waxes from a paper marbler. They would be wonderful with this! Now I hope my molding paste is still viable....
I don’t know how they compare, but I have had good success using joint compound instead of modeling paste in other projects. It dries much faster. Have to thank my hubby for that. You can even add grout for texture. Anybody else try it?🙏🖖
Joint compound (or grout) is NOT ARCHIVAL so you cannot sell any artwork you make using hardware supplies. since I am a professional artist, that is not an option here.
@@ElizabethStHilaire I will! Just ordered the stencils from Joggles and will make texture plates with them, (love the peacock and bubbles). Your prints have the look of batiks. I plan to print on good quality muslin, use the prints to make a quilt top! I will let you know how it works. Thanks for the inspiration!
Very cool. When used in a mixed media piece, does the wax resist? Or do you have to seal it? Also what is the lovely transparent blue you used at around 29:20? I don't think I have that color. Thank you for sharing your technique!
The wax does not cause any issues, it’s a small amount of it. I think I named the colors in the video? If not, I’m not totally sure! Ultramarine maybe?
@@ElizabethStHilaire They do have wax in them but I do not know the exact percentage . The Neocolor ll are water soluble and the Neocolor l are not water soluble and work as a resist if adding water. I just found your channel and I already love it. I am fairly new to mix media. Have worked with stencils, stamps and different pastes on greeting cards. I have subscribed and will follow you going forward. You are fabulous....🥰🥰🥰🥰

@@ElleCoyote that’s awesome! I’m glad you enjoyed it.
The last one with meandering colors is my fave
Thanks Avanelle!
Oh my gosh. Thank you. That lets me use my texture paste in a different way.
My pleasure!
Oh my gosh! Something else to put on my list! Thanks Elizabeth - your creativity knows no boundaries!
Hard to believe sometimes. LOL thanks!!
A whole new world of ideas. Love your clear and understandable instructions.❤

Thanks so much for sharing! I have the cedar canyon too but this is fun to make from your favorite stencils.
That was fun! I can think of so many ways to use those collage pieces.
That’s my forte, the collage application!
Oooohhh I just got my Joggles order with these stencils! Thx for this great texture creating idea.
Oh you are going to love making the texture plates!! My pleasure
You are so talented and inventive!
Awe thanks so much

you could do that too Linda!!!
An excellent lesson, Elizabeth! So fun and creative! Can't wait to make my plates.

Lots of fun. Thank you.
My pleasure!
My papers were thin and tore with the amount of water, but if they dry and are as pretty as they are right now… lots to experiment with! Thank you!
Most rice papers are thin, that is why I highly recommend the 9x12 pad linked below. it also works best in terms of tearing for collage application.
This is a beautiful tutorial! I learned so very much from it. I have often wanted to make texture plates with my stencils. Thank you for sharing!

Love these. I want to try metallic gold crayon with black/ purple acrylic washes and black/ purple crayon with gold acrylic washes.
Sounds like a winning combo!
So fun! Thank you.

Really awesome! Loves these colors and textures. I didn't see any difference between the sanded and smooth texture gel. Did you?
No, I didn’t end up seeing any difference, I think they work exactly the same for this application anyway
Elizabeth, love this process! Do you think it can be used on fabric?
I have no idea as I do not use fabric, give it a try! it might work like Batik.

@@flypanfly thanks for the support! Let me know, I’m totally curious!!!!
Could you do a rubbing with oil pastels?
You could, but you could not use them in collage, because oil and acrylic do not mix.
Where do I purchase Rice paper to make collage papers like these? Love the lesson! Thank you very much for the demo
All supplies are linked below the video: shrsl.com/3c7o8
can you do this with fabric? Add some kind of medium into the paint? then wash out the wax?
I have no idea, I am a paper collage artist. I would suggest doing some research. Thanks for watching!
This is a fantastic idea your papers are gorgeous. Will the wax crayons resist acrylic medium when glueing your papers down or varnishing?
no, there are no issues with gel acrylic medium for glue. I use it all the time. thanks for being here!

I think it was Manganese Blue Hue, gorgeous color! Elizabeth uses it often.
I think it’s Goldens high flow fluorescent blue. I looked at colour chart as I like it too.
Would you please share where you got that dreamy brush ?

Will too much wax prevent the paper from sticking down with glue .
No, it works just fine!
