  • Roots of Fight revisits Bruce Lee's impact on the evolution of mixed martial arts with a new mini documentary featuring rare footage of Lee and a capsule collection. This mini-doc Features commentary from some of MMA's finest, including Paul Lazenby, Eddie Bravo, and Ralek Gracie.
The film examines the evolution of Lee's style from Wing Chun to his opening Jun Fan Gung Fu Institute, to his ultimate realization that the best fighter, the most complete fighter has no style at all.
"I do not teach karate because I do not believe in style," said Lee. "When you don't have style, you can say, here I am as a human being, how can I express myself totally and completely."
Lee went on to develop Jeet Kune Do (the way of the intercepting fist) a form of Gung Fu that he believed to be a philosophy rather than a style.
"The attitude that you build your own style using whatever works for you," says Paul Lazenby, "That very thought is the cornerstone of modern mixed martial arts."
Roots of Fight releases this mini documentary of Bruce Lee describing the essence of mixed martial arts along with a Bruce Lee inspired line of apparel as a tribute to his first Jun Fan Gung Fu institute that opened in Seattle, Washington in 1961.

if Bruce was alive today, and being a much loved commentator at UFC today, i can hear him say " while there are still rules in this arena of combat, you are not going to get an honest evolution. one has to wonder if grappling would have enjoyed the meteoric rise it has if blows down on top of the head had not been banned ".

I have the book, right here beside me. It was printed in 1975 by Linda and Gilbert and is a collection of ALL of Bruce's personal notes from his own note book in reference to fighting. It in one of my opinions is one of the best martial arts books of all time. So much that even if you despise Lee, you should read it.

WJM is the father of kickboxing club that has produced IKF Muay Thai Champions, Pan American Sanshou Champions, U.S. National Sanshou coaches and more. Wong Jack Man is a Northern Shaolin Stylist: totally different from wing chun. Bruce Lee was also called the father of American Kick boxing by Joe Lewis (heavyweight champion who was trained by Lee).

Have you READ the Tao?It has excerpts from many famous books similar to that. Including a book from the 40s by Edwin L Hasset. As far as it being a "mess" i disagree. That same book helped me on MY personal path including handling myself on the street. Ive been in about 20 or so scraps in my life which is above average for most. I was able to USE the concepts in that book as well as expand on it ( per the book again ) and I joined TKD school and improved my kicks and then got THAT school into bjj

In fact, it seems that neither Wong Jack Man nor Bruce Lee have a report with MMA. This "sport" was introduced in the 90's thanks to the Gracie's family which wanted to spread Vale Tudo, which can be translate by free fight, beyond Brazil's borders.

Its obvious bruce was father of mma. Just look how inteligently he spoke about it back then, revealing how he went about getting as good as he did.
Being father of mma is not about first person to train in more than one style or to have boxer v judo fight like lebel. So the jealous lebel wants to be called grandfather.?
All we know is lebel tip toed around bruce when lee was alive and became a comedian after lee died with no filter

I think you mean "have a rapport with MMA".I dont know about Wong but Bruce sure did. There is a section on grappling and studies on judo , ju-jitsu and wrestling in the Tao of Jeet Kune Do.Back then though people still mostly fought by striking. This then evolved into the 90s where grappling debunked a lot of TMA myths about real fighting.Ill bet my bottom dollar that were Lee alive today he would LOVE MMA.

I had to take the video down because I started instructing traditional and contemporary martial arts in San Diego as well as personal training and I felt I was causing to much hate on both sides ( the WJM side & the BL side). Yes, thanks for the correction. I think that neither Wong nor Bruce have a report with MMA. Tao of Jeet Kune Do has been written and edited by Linda Lee and Gilbert L.Johnson after Bruce's death. Studies on judo, jiu-jitsu and wrestling? There are some pictures with nearly none explanation. Not really rigourous. In Bruce's time, there were competitions in wrestling and judo.
Lee neither competed nor organized any event to promote combat sports. MMA appeared in 1993, 20 years after Lee's death.

  • @AmericanTestConstitution

and yes, many Bruce Lee fans are a slightly off mentally. In regards to the martial arts, many are infatuated with the false idea that Lee was toughest hand-to-hand fighter ever, one inch punches and emotionally gripping movie scenes. Despite "crazy" fans it is important to note that Joe Lewis did use Lee's tactics for some portion of his career. Also Shoot Boxing Champion/influential grappler Erik Paulson credits D. Inosanto (BL's direct student) for much MA fighting success in UA-cam videos.

  • @AmericanTestConstitution
    @AmericanTestConstitution 10 років тому

You have to take into account, that in Lee's time, if a person wanted to record something they had to have a film camera. I don't think that Lee was at the level of a skilled professional like Ray Lenard, but I believe that Lee had some street brawls (because he ran his mouth a lot), and that his Jeet Kune Do was greatly influenced by those past fighting experiences. Many so called "Masters" had no reel fighting experience at all.

Bruce Lee really fought people. He just had an out: multi million dollar motion pictures. Joe Lewis also called Royce Gracie a pussy after match with "Kimo". I think Joe Lewis was just angry that he had a high volume of sanctioned matches but he never became a house hold name. Bruce Lee did a lot for martial athletes. The TAO OF JEET KUNE DO is a solid piece of literature. It was the most solid thing in the United States that was produce on the level of the mass media.

I had 6000 views in a short time but there to many people that felt I totally hated Lee, and then there were the Bruce Lee haters who side with me. Neither of the two sides could analyze Lee with any objectivity and correctly tally his positives and negatives.

But no one could match Bruce lee's power, speed, endurance and flexibility. Clearly, Bruce Lee would have learned all the today's new techniques, and invented new ones too, since he was ahead of time, it makes sense to say, in today he would have still been ahead of his time, his philosophy was the best and would have been at any given time. clearly you have to compare apples to apples, if Bruce Lee was alive today, obviously he would have learned the new advanced techniques and would have been ahead of everyone. Jim Kelly who was also a Karate Champion stated Bruce Lee was "untouchable"

History is very long, in the thousands of years.
If knowledge is not passed on, it will be forgotten in 1 generation.
Having different approaches was there way back in the Shaolin 5 Animals Kung Fu.
It was there in Greek Pancration.
Knowledge is forgotten and re-invented over and over again.
Real modern MMA was started with Luta Livre, whose best modern example is Marco Ruas, who won a tournament in 3 different ways, submission, pin, and TKO.
Luta Livre put into practice what Bruce Lee only conceptualized.
Ralek Gracie has amnesia about Luta Livre. And he's a Gracie.
Everybody is jumping on the Bruce Lee bandwagon because he is a shorthand for "excellence".
To give credit to Bruce Lee, someone who is within living memory confirms our own amnesia.
This [bleep] has been around for thousands of years.
We are born with no knowledge. In essence we have amnesia with every generation.

Bruce Lee could be overrated in terms of his comparisons to Ali, and the current champions, but you can't really say that there were a better set of ideas, pushed out into the mass media, when studying the martial arts, above Bruce Lee's ideas. There were lot's of lies told by the Bruce Lee group, but is there a famous group without skeletons in the closet? Bruce Lee was ahead of the game as far as forming modern training regiments and they were in line with conditioning for full contact fight.

It's useless, this "book" is a mess. Try instead "Championship Fighting" (1950) of Jack Dempsey to have a clear explanation of boxing techniques, how to train properly and some reliable pieces of advice. Read "Jiu Jitsu complete" of Kiyose Nakae (1958), that describes extensively Jiu Jitsu's techniques for self-defense's purpose. Even the first book written by Bruce Lee titled "Chinese Gung Fu the philosophical art of self defense" (1963) is better and more clear than Tao of Jeet Kune Do.

It was around 1967 or 1968 when Wong Jack Man went into Bruce Lee's martial art school and challenged Bruce to a brawl, he demanded that if Bruce loses the fight he would have to close down his martial art school, if Bruce wins then Jack Man would never bother him again. So the fight was on, lasted about 2 mins, Jack Man got his ass kicked by Bruce. Jack Man left and never returned again. Case closed.
