Bruce Lee's Unnoticed Attribute: The Non-Telegraphic Movement

  • Have you ever noticed that Bruce Lee's attacks are EXPLOSIVE??? Do you know that the real reason behind this deadly explosiveness is the attribute he perfected: NON-TELEGRAPHIC MOVEMENT.
    The idea of non telegraphing is to attack without any forewarning movements. If you punch with just a slight motion of your feet or body, you have “telegraphed” or warned your opponent of your intention. There are no preparatory short movements for an attack. The key is that one must keep one's body and arms loose, weaving one's arms slightly and only becoming tense upon impact. Lee wanted no wind-up movements or "get ready poses" to prelude any attacks. Lee explained that any twitches or slight movements before striking should be avoided as they will give the opponent signs or hints as to what is being planned and then they will be able to strike first while one is preparing an attack.
    This video demonstrates how Bruce Lee used to execute his movements without telegraphing.

    Bruce Lee's unnoticed attribute is actually "the principle of non-intention" and not "non-telegraph/non-telegraphic". Here's an excerpt from an interview with Patrick Strong, a student of Bruce Lee's Seattle school, conducted by Paul Bax in 2008:
    Here's part of Patrick Strong's answer regarding "non-intention" from the Temple of the Unknown web forum:

      there are 5 brains in the body
      in the
      head
      heart
      solar plexus
      stomach
      every cell in body
      becz bruce was so emotional, he only got as far as the heart brain.
      to really appreciate non intention at the cellular level, simply watch animals fight, that is non intention done intentionally base what they see, feel instinctively understand..

      This is very true, I notice while sparring and fighting if I don't think but simply let my body 'perform' I do far better than when I try to think about what i'm going to do before I do it.

    I don't understand how someone can watch this with an open mind and say that he couldn't compete in modern combat sports. People say he never actually fought anybody, so that somehow makes phony. He would brutalize people in street fights (though they were probably against unprofessional)s before he moved to America and changed his philosophy Look, I'm not some blindly devoted Bruce Lee fanboy... anybody can be defeated, and I'm sure there have been other people like him throught history. But with his exceptional speed, strength, athleticism, and determination, he could have definitely been a world champion combat fighter in numerous sports, and to say otherwise is totally unrealistic. I know this will probably invoke a sea of poorly written comments from Bruce Lee haters/doubters, but I don't really care anyways. All I know is that he was one of the most gifted human beings to have ever lived.

    • @oneginee
      @oneginee 9 років тому +11

      probably his biggest skill of all was his determination and to never be satisfied with his result where others would have stopped at 1/5th of what he had achieved with his fighting skills. He must have worked himself like 10 people put in one for his entire life his mental determination torturing him and pushing limits of training with results that went miles beyond territories of pain and will never explored except maybe a handful of people a century.

      Bruce actually had quite a few fight challenges during his later years, not to mention fighting as a teenager on Hong Kong rooftops with fellow teens. During filming of "Enter the Dragon" Bruce hired the extras/prisoners that were actually HK street gang members, and if you watch the making of the movie, the director says Bruce was challenged by some of those gang members on a daily basis. Bruce would win the contest and not hold grudges, allowing the defeated 'tough guy' to remain as a extra!
      While shooting "The Big Boss" in Thailand Bruce was again challenged by a family member of someone Bruce hurt badly the year before. There was talk on the set that it was an agreed 'fight to the death,' but Bruce KO'd him and then destroyed the footage!

    • @zachrollins9034
      @zachrollins9034 9 років тому +3

      onedead I'm sure Bruce probably went easy on them. In one of the documentaries on him one of his family members said he used to regularly break peoples bones in fights. Fortunately he changed his philosophy later on and taught Jeet Kune Do for self defense and not just to hurt confrontational people. I also remember the "to the death" challenge story. If I remember right Bruce just took him down, put him in a crucifix and beat him to a pulp. As much as I would have liked to see footage of that, I'm sure he thought there was no honor in beating some macho jerk. How do you think he would have done in professional combat sports?

    • @onedead
      @onedead 9 років тому +2

      Zach Rollins I truly believe that Bruce would have dominated in something like the current MMA tournaments! He was always training, always practicing, always learning new and better techniques. In Dan Innosanto's (the double stick combatant in "Game of Death") Biography about Bruce Lee's life, he said that Bruce would be reading a book while practicing extended kicks, all while watching TV for hours at a time. He was always doing 2-3 things at once.
      Chuck Norris has said that during his top training days he couldn't keep up with Bruce's training regiment. Bruce was so fast and strong, i really don't think too many people on the planet could even get close enough to him to hit him if they were in the ring with him!

    The man who was not satisfied with how traditional martial arts taught us how to move in unarmed combat so he studied the art of fighting from different perspectives around the world and realized that, for himself, the ideal way to move around on his feet in order to deploy his personal arsenal of strikes in the 'stand-up range' is a cross hybrid style of boxing and fencing.

Only this is a real human being. As fast as some of the greatest and fastest boxers of our time you can still see their hand and arm movements when they punch. Bhawesh Thapa the best way I would describe his reaction time and hand speed was he totally eliminated that period when your brain tells your body to react. His hands and legs automatically strike when his mind senses aggression towards him. Don’t forget, he studied and majored in philosophy at the University Of Washington and was 25 percent German. Very intelligent. Also, Bruce was very confident (and very cocky). He will always be a true legend. RIP

    I think he's weight would have limited him in the modern scene but let's face it, would we even have what we have today without his ground breaking work - of course not! So even how a lot of modern MMA fighters train was done by BL way ahead of his time. The man is amazing reagrdless of how people try label him. Fact is most of the fighters they try compare him to today were probably inspired by him anyway lol.. It's a fruitless, endless debate that loses the essence of his contribution.. What most people fail to see is that it is BL himself that changed movie fight choreography thereby inspiring some of today's modern fighters as well as changed the whole face of martial arts by crossing so-called style barriers. So he recognised western boxing techniques as stronger and more effective so used it. So even if he competed the stage wasn't set for his mixed styles yet. Plus, even if he competed he would have been weight restricted so the whole business of trying to find out who he could have beaten is silly. Fact is that he inpired numerous generations and changed the whole philosophy of fighting.

Your video, I hope, clarified any questions & gave them food for thought.. It was very well done, well documented & inspiring. I especially loved the slo mo retakes. He didn't need to be a big man to be lethal only fast, strong & precise, which is/was what he was. He knew he had a gift, that he was different & he was quite intelligent. it was the reason he needed to create Jun Fan Gung Fu & Jeet Kune Do. Six punches to one speaks for itself & his kicks also so fast & precise. The height alone on some are amazing when combined with his celerity. Thank you for a first class video.

      I agree with that statement 100 percent. Very few people seem to understand that who claims Bruce Lee would of got beat in today's ufc hell Dana White & Jon Jones just to name a few says something different he would of been a champion. Anyway some of these mma fighters with Channels on UA-cam claiming he wouldn't of won not even on Bruce Lee's level his skills were far superior to theirs most still can't do what he was able to do cause if so you would of had a lot more Bruce Lee type skills fighters out there their tough but not his type of toughness.

    I am one of the lucky ones who saw Bruce perform his twenty minute demonstration in person in Washington DC in 1968 at the Jhoon Rhee National Karate Championship featuring Joe Lewis defending his heavyweight title. He talked to the audience in attendance as he demonstrated his skills. He is simply the most charismatic, coolest and cocky (in a good way) person I have ever seen. His confidence and energy were fantastic and he looked like everything you have imagined and then some. Will never forget that day. On a side note, Joe Lewis was an animal and just as cocky and confident as Bruce. A former Marine who trained in Okinawa and was heavyweight champion and became a student of Bruce. Anyone who doubts the authenticity of Bruce should watch Joe’s videos describing the speed and power of him. Joe Lewis was a no nonsense guy and no one to mess with.

    His muscles must have really been compressed to a point I can't imagine. I mean this non telegraphic movement isn't as simple as it looks. You should have the strength and explosiveness to minimally initiate movement and yet the attack would still be powerful.

      Cadi Levox He told his friend that why he is so fast, because he trained his muscle to be natural reaction, he said if you thinking before your punch, it will slow you down, you need to train your muscle to have an automatic reaction, like the old Chinese martial art master said 「your punch arrive same time with your mind」 Normally people will have think first then punch out.

    • @mightymeatmonsta
      @mightymeatmonsta 8 років тому +6

      No, they aren't. Where did you hear that? The punches have plenty of power. Look at Bruce Lee. Are you saying HIS punches were weak? His punches were as powerful as MIKE TYSON'S, and he was about 70 lbs lighter. You can't go by these videos of beginners. If that were the case, then boxers, muay thai guys and karate guys all have weak punches because NONE of them here on you tube can punch hard.

    • @jhanks2012
      @jhanks2012 8 років тому

      +mightymeatmonsta I'm saying that wing chun punches are quantity over quality and there's nobody who can throw 4 or 6 full strength punches per second I guarantee that. wing chun is mostly for show and not true combat. idk about Lee punching as hard as Tyson I truly doubt that but it's irrelevant to the point I was making

    • @MysticNinjaJay
      @MysticNinjaJay 8 років тому +4

      +mightymeatmonsta I'm sure that Bruce Lee could punch hard but not as hard as Mike Tyson. The difference in their weight is about 85 pounds (220 - 135 = 85) and we're talking solid muscle. No matter how fast Bruce Lee was he could not generate as much power as Mike Tyson.

    • @shannmisteri7093
      @shannmisteri7093 5 років тому

      The Lowly One A punch is a block and a block is a punch they are one in the same, the block punch strikes whatever is coming at you being arm leg elbow Head, but a regular strike punch does not necessarily have to block before it hits although in Wing Chun most of them do because when you swing your right hand they're blocking with their left at the same time punching you with the same fist because it's a Centerline principle.

    this is the result of wing chun kung fu influence, using the core and ground as the main focal point of power rather than the muscle. This give a fast shipping action to the movement. This is also found in Tae Kwan Do, and Judo. Using the core as the source of strength because your ground is engaged.

    • @angerslave1
      @angerslave1 8 років тому

      whipping

    • @mightymeatmonsta
      @mightymeatmonsta 8 років тому

      +angerslave1 It's not even CLOSE to crappy judo or tae kwan do. They are TECHNIQUE -DRIVEN martial arts and wing chun is a CONCEPTUAL-BASED martial arts. The first on RUNS on the techniques, that dictate response, the second runs on concepts, which are the GUIDELINE or OUTLINE of how the system is to be properly used in a fight. The first ones are stiff, rigid and limited in its' responses, and the second is not.

    • @angerslave1
      @angerslave1 8 років тому +6

      ***** awhahahhaahahahhahha, do you really believe that?! Awhahahaha its a fight and you can't properly use any technique from any system without proper core control. You love make believe alot huh?

    • @mightymeatmonsta
      @mightymeatmonsta 8 років тому

      It's true and that is what separates wing chun from the rest of the martial arts. Core control comes into play in all martial arts, but it still doesn't demonstrate the difference between what is a technique-driven martial art, like judo and jiu jitsu, and a conceptual one, driven by concepts, like wing chun.

    • @angerslave1
      @angerslave1 8 років тому

      ***** mmmm no. Concepts aren't the same as technique, and wing chun is all technique and weapons, there is theory behind it that should be gone over, but the practice of wing chun is all about creating technique for real life combat sensitivity

    Many persons keep saying Bruce did not compete. Im thinking compete in what discipline? He was very busy conceptualizing MMA to be worried about 1 dimensional fighters.My opinion is however, Bruce was way ahead of the game and the fact that he was formless proves he is the most effective and complete fighter of all time. Any style can be countered but when you are like water you become the teapot ,meaning any situation you put him in he will find a way. Ask Chuck Norris (the way of the Dragon)
