- Upper Ball Joint Replace GMC Envoy-Trailblazer. Here I replace the Upper Ball Joint in this GMC Envoy-trailblazer. You will need to jack the GMC Envoy-trailblazer up and remove the wheel. Then you can remove the nut holding the axle ,and the nut holding the upper ball joint. Will want to remove the two bolts that hold the brake line to the knuckle, and the antilock brake wire. Then you can pull the top of knuckle out and press the old ball joint out and press the new ball joint in. Then reverse the steps to tear down for reassembly. Then the GMC Envoy-trailblazer can be safe to drive again.
Due to G+ Allowing links to be posted and I do not have time to make sure all links are safe ,ANY post with a link in it will be deleted. Sorry. .

Hands down best ball joint replacement video👍
Wow, thanks!
This was very educational now I feel confident to get it done.

Good vid! I do this very often at blue collar auto repair but mostly on newer dodges and ford trucks. We never do many gm's! A little tip tough pb blaster helps loosen the old ball joint and a little pb blaster on the new one helps sliding it in.
I just love Blaster.
Thanks your video helped a lot, with my wife's help we changed both left and right upper ball joints in a short time.

Excellent video work, Terry-- very clear step-by-step... although I hope I don't have to do this yet... until I have a bit more wrenching experience! Thanks for taking the time to include us
You could handle it . Thanks for watching
Good job Terry, gotta love having some shelter from the cold.
Not perfect but much better. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Thank you
Your video helps me 😊
You're welcome 😊
Great video! With the help from your video and a neighbor with all the right tools and an impact we changed out the upper ball joints on my 2005 Trailblazer this past Sunday. It was a hassle free job. Thank you.
Thanks for watching and commenting.
Good tutorial, I’ve never done them before.
Thanks
I'm going to tackle this project this weekend, I will have this video playing while I am doing it. Thanks

Great video, I have the ball joint kit, now I know how to use it, couldn't of been shown any easier...
Every situation will be a little different , but with a combination of the tools parts you can usually get it done. I use the tool for many different things ,it is nice to have around.
Thanks for the video. Helped me change my upper ball joints on my Trailblazer last year. I'll be changing the lower ball joints soon.

Nice instruction. Always learn something.
Great video, a few tips I found by just doing this myself, previous owner installed Moog problem solvers, which are oversized and stretch the bore opening, OEM BJs would not fit, I had to return them and get Moog again, which I should have started with anyway. Also, for more room concerning the brake line, you can remove the 2 10mm bolts to the hose bracket on the back of the knuckle and have enough room to tilt the knuckle out further
I had to cut mine just above the ball and it popped right out . Thanks for the video
Glad you got it , Thanks for watching and commenting
Neat process. Thanks for sharing. Wishing I had had one of those presses back in the day...
They do make it nice. Thanks for watching George
Thanks for the tip about greasing the rubber boot. I tore the boot up on the first try and nobody sells just the boot. I have the replacement replacement and don't want to tear it up. Thanks 🤞🏼
Thank you for stopping in and commenting . Hope you get it sorted out
I need to do this as well to my 2004 trailblazer, thanks so much for the informative video!

Ball joint press is worth it's weight to me. I use the heck out of them. Good vid
It is amazing how many uses. Should be called Swiss Army Press. lol
Very clear cut good video thnx
So nice of you thanks .
So I learned way more than expected
Thank you for watching and commenting
Excellent!!!Very easy to follow!!!
Thank You
Excellent video sir!
Thank you kindly!
Excellent video Terry!
Thanks Tom
a really good how to vid there m'friend. .you are sure a lot smarter than your dog looks!
Thanks ,and He is the brains of the operation.
The press clamp that is being used in this video, the tip comes out of the end of the presser screw and the ball joint stud fits right inside of it. It's much much more simpler to use it that way.
Just noticed today my drivers upper boot is ripped and grease is all over. I paid someone a year ago to change it, gonna try it myself. thx for the video!
Thanks for watching and hope all goes well
just found you. have a 2004 envoy I need to get to work on. great vid. Thanks.

Excellent video T!
Thanks Carl.
Great video thank you
Good stuff Terry.
Thank You.
Most ball joint pres kits have two of those circular rings such as you had at the bottom of the receiving tube. Put the other one on top of the ball joint. The depression on one side will capture the top of the ball joint and the depression on the other side will capture the end of the forcing screw. The press won't be able to slide off the ball joint. Also, always use grease on the forcing screw to reduce wear on its threads.

Thanks for doing this video! I have an '06 Trailblazer I'll have to be doing this on in the future. Thanks for the tips.

Great video, well done
Thank you
Great video! Followed it step by step and it was a no hassle operation! Kudos. By the way, wheel nut torque for the 2003 GMC Envoy V8 is 103ftlb.
Thanks for watching and commenting
Good video well said. Im doing tomorrow on driver side.
ha ha It is not a bad job , Thanks for watching and com, menting
Got one out and used the wrong press adapter and dented the grease fitting hole, and tore the boot.
Hope this makes you slow down and make sure you have everything together
Helpful video. Thank you.

@@wtbm123 How much does it cost to change the Ball Joint?
Excellent video! Good tips about disengaging axle and possibly scratching fender.
Thank you for watching and commenting
Good video.
Apply double or triple thick cardboard shield to fender to protect against damage from press screw. Just use lightweight masking tape so paint doesn't get peeled.
Also, wire brush knuckle surface where ball joint seats (under and upper side of knuckle), around hole.

Thanks. I'm about to do the same on a 2002 Trailblazer. The ball fell right out of the socket on the driver's side when I jacked it up to do an oil change. Yikes.
Good that it did not fall apart driving
did he just scratch the fender? LOL
Yea fender fell clean off the next day . lol
Lol
Good straight to the point, what is the torque for the axle nut?
Nice👍
Thanks for the visit
Cool..........tony
Thanks.
what was the torque spec on that? I'm getting ready to do that to my 06' trailblazer.
Say you didn't say it!!!!....."All you gotta do..." :)

Great video, What do you charge the customer for this job? Just Labor because the customer supplied the parts.
Some people need to take the boot off first should've mentioned that

Just got my 02 envoy back from my mechanic. Did U and L ball joints in addition to other suspension stuff on the front and back. When I got home I was just looking over what I could see and there is a big glob of grease on my right Upper ball joint. Would that be the boot grease? eBay parts so I'm pretty worried it failed...
look and see if boot looks ok . they may of just left a glob of grease there. . Could ask them to look
my 03 trailblazer knocks when I run over a bump in the road. think this should help?
Ops found torque but it's for envoy v8, is it the same for v6? 103ft,lb
Great job Terry !
Are you finally workin inside with some heat ?
Kinda chilly around here for outside work now :)
Yea in a temporary place for now ,but have 4 walls and a roof.
Good news brother, you deserve to be comfortable !
Wanna go little at a time, hammers it down full speed lol

What type of connect did you use on the air impact to push it through? I'm a novice...
Not sure what you referring to , But the tool to remove them was a Ball Joint Press.
Will the normal ball joint press/adapters kit from harbor freight work for this vehicle? Please my friend let me know?
That is all i used , but it may be easier with the extra ones.
wtbm123 thanks
How do I get the leg out far enough to put the c-clamp on the ball joint. I have no room due to the brake line being short....don't want to pull on that to much. I have a 2004 GMC Envoy.
derekandkeyasha01 if line is to short then would need to remove caliper or whatever to give more room.
whats the torch specs on the axle nut?
Did you leave the grease bushing on
on most yes .
What size nut is on the axle?
Do not remember , but prob a 36mm
What brand of parts you use there? Thanks.
I try to use Moog as much as possible
How bad did you scratch the fender there
No scratches
I always end up pinching or snagging the boot. when installing new ball joints. p's me off.
Thanks for watching and commenting
Some advice ..... Just buy non greaseable ball joints. Last time i did this joint i put greaseable ball joints and it was nothing but aggravation and messy.
If you want to that is fine . Thank you for stopping in and commenting.
Quit tip....it's easier and quicker to take fender and liner off to have room for separator tool. Instead of taking apart axle nut and brakes. I had fender and liner off in under 10 min 👍

There charging me 700 bucks here in California for this work on all tires is that to much parts and labor
Depends on area , that may not be to bad , but calling another shop in the area would let you know more about the prices in your area
How much does it cost to change the Ball Joint?
All depends on your area and type of Garage . Around here about $100 and parts
@@wtbm123 It's ok thanks, what's your state?
The one part I needed to see wasn't filmed....getting that damn P.O.S clip out of there! you can't get a screwdriver down between the clip and shaft to pry it off even with a hammer, and you have to hit both open ends of it at the same time in order to push it out or it just rotates. These stupid engineers drive me crazy! Why can't they just put the usual snap ring on it!!!
Should be able to hold one end and work the other end off with little screwdrivers or picks . if you have good snap ring pliers they may do it . each ens should have a little taper
@@wtbm123 I'll try to clamp one end, and then use a screwdriver and hammer to move the other end out a little. I tried my snap ring pliers already...no go
Very bad idea to keep your hand right at the top of the press as you were removing the upper joint. If that press was to slip you would be hurting really bad. I used a socket on top of the joint and was pressing against the socket.

I dislike editing on these info repair videos. The part you're editing out is exactly what people want to see.
Sorry . There are probably other videos , or you could make one . A ten minute video takes me about 8 hours to upload so it is either edit or do nothing . Sorry you do not like the free video.
My bad. I should have known I shouldn't have left such an opened ended criticism. I applaud your work and motivtion to even do such a thing. I believe that people want to see the ugly stuff. The problems that arise nd working it out. I wish you the best!@@wtbm123
What a screwy design Like the other stuff on these GMC Envoys "We are professional grade!" My ASS!
Got noru

Who are the idiots at GM that designed the wheel hub yoke so the upper ball joint head is at an angle towards the outside of the wheel well and the ball joint boot is under stress and tears?
Thanks for watching and commenting . I wonder also
Was good, except specify what tools u need!! Wtf
Thanks for watching
65 dollar part 300 dollars in labor
