Elite Nero Rollers Detailed & Demoed | New Smart Indoor Training Tech
Вставка
- Опубліковано 4 кві 2019
- We love a bit of smart tech, and today we’re taking a first look at this pair of Elite Nero Rollers.
The reason we’re showing you though is that these aren’t just any pair of rollers, as these have variable, automatically controlled resistance within them meaning they’re a genuine alternative to the popular choice of a direct drive turbo trainer when riding on something like Zwift.

Having used rollers for, literally decades I was very excited for these to land on my desk. Firstly then, let's explain what rollers actually are. They’re a freestanding training product that allow you to ride in a static position. Similar to a turbo trainer but with a pretty obvious difference to it.
That difference is you’re not supported when riding on rollers. And by that I mean that your bike is not clamped or attached to the trainer in anyway, you rely on balance, speed and battling against gravity to stay upright, just like riding out on the open roads.
These rollers share only a couple of similarities to the rollers we would see riders using back in the 1960’s and well, almost up until the present day. And that is that they have three drums, two here for the rear wheel to sit within, and then a front roller for the front wheel to be on. As you pedal, the rear rollers drive the front one via this band that in turn makes it feel like you are riding on the road.
There’s also a 2.7kg flywheel in each of the rollers which means that when they start spinning they carry a certain inertia, giving you that road like feel.

GCN Top Tip: don't fake exhaustion when we can see your recovery zone watts on the screen ;)
he needed a poweer meter
Nothing better than a emotion roller. They are the best thing to train on!
I agree. I've used mine since 2010. Shaky legs after a good session. I hate fixed wheel trainers.
Just bought an Elite Nero - like the one in the video. Definitely a new skill to learn, and the advice about setting it up in a door frame is spot-on. Only took me a few minutes to get the hang of it, but it will be a while before I can move away from the door frame as the startup is a bit shaky! And it will be a while before I'm confident enough to clip in! Every so often I lose the smooth pedalling and head towards the edge. Biggest problem is every so often I break to stop - which is silly as I'm not moving, but results in the bike being ejected off the back, lol. But it seems awesome for my core, and I can sync with my bikes power meter so get consistent readings on and off.
can you get competitive power out of this unit while zwifting?
i've connected rollers (tacx galaxia) to speed and cadence sensors + HR monitor and the output was frustrating.
Wouldn’t recommend it for racing. More endurance or climbing. When I try to sprint I usually end up going off the front!
@@DavidMackenzie How are the rollers holding up? I’m interested in buying ones but I’ve heard about quality issues
@@siffoine Still going fine - although I tend to only use it in the winter months. I haven't had any issues.
@@DavidMackenzie I so wish that long time reviews, instead of unboxing reviews would be a thing. Thanks!
Those Orbea's are just flippin gorgeous!
I have a set of InsideRide e-motion rollers with the previous generation smart controller. They work the same way as the Nero but have been on the market for years now.
Thanks for your video. I want ask you. “4years later, do you think that the price of Nero is fair?” it is a good price to buy in 2023? Thanks for ur advice!!
Now I have to save up from my pension. Discovered the joys of static bike 'riding' during lockdown (I had a massive heart attack and stent in April 2020 so had to do cardio rehab which meant being told to stop my usual exercise and just do barely above resting level). Eventually found my son's old £300 static bike did the job - with the cardio rehab warm-up programme, laptop playing music or UA-cam videos, and, once I'd recovered, ten-minute blasts at top two heart zone levels or level 2 heart zone (depending on the day) alternating with press-ups, kettle swinging and lifting, stand on one leg, etc. Total time: 2.5 to 3.5 hours depending on my programme. Could now graduate to something like this in the shed partnered with my 2007 Cannondale System6 (it's barely worth selling with its Al rear and carbon front and narrow 23C tyres and rims). Cheaper and more testing than a turbo. Of course, supplesse came from lots fixed gear riding but gave away the Specialized steel Langster in lockdown to someone who needed it while cardio told me not to go above a pretty low level of heart rate.
When I did get on a real bike and monitored heart rate, it became clear that just the instinctive work of balancing involves work that you don't get on a static bike (or turbo?). Rollers seem to help with deep core development. So - I want to pause the bike computer (like I do on the cheap static bike) every ten minutes, jump off, do press-ups, kettles, squats, stand on one leg, jump back on and press play. At 67, I can't afford to sit around. This looks good for what I need. Never been interested in Strava etc
Is Jon contractually forbidden from riding a bike on camera?
Long ago Jon became the most overpowered rider in the world but it came at a cost; no one can see him ride a bike again
Now Thats funny!
I was thinking the same thing! I want to see him spin!
He doesn't want to show the other lads up with his emense Quadzilla thighs.
Baby steps guys, not long ago we couldn’t even be sure Jon had legs.
THIS is what I need. I have been fighting getting a smart trainer. I may succumb the this and actually ride indoors. Say it isn't so!
Crikey! Let us know how you get on with them if you decide to go for it!
I have been looking at one of these, glad to see it in use and it's not so loud! May have to pick on up
Got mine on order. Supposed to be in May. I have been riding Quick Motion rollers for two years and really looking forward to an interactive roller for Rouvy and Zwift
I was hoping gcn would review these, thanks!
I enjoy my Elite rollers but still go back to my Neo for hard workouts on Zwift or Rouvy. I actually find the rollers too hard for those workouts. With a smart trainer it gives you a break on the downhills... like on the backside of Epic KOM. But with the rollers even on the downhills I need to work or... fall over. Wonder if there are rollers with build in motor to give you a downhilll boost so you can recover?? That would be very cool?? Maybe the TACX treadmill type does that but it costs more than an S-Works!
those seem like they would the best zwift option, would love to try these!!!
I ride on the elite arion b+ smart rollers and really enjoy them. They do not have the rocking motion highlighted in the Nero rollers which make it really hard to stand on.
Rollers a good purchase for winter training and core strength needs.
Center of front roller should be inline with the axle or slightly forward for better stability; putting it behind the axle will make things darty or even prone to rolling off the rollers if you start surging a bit.
Hi Brad, we intuitively agree what you're stating is correct, but as far as our experience with roller is concerned it is not entirely right.
Placing the wheel slightly moved beyond the axis does not significantly increase the risk of going further. In fact there is a difference of less than a 1mm in height.
I was thinking about getting a direct drive smart turbo, but considering this is cheaper, it allows for much more natural movement and you can use your no1 bike on it in seconds.
Same! And since I only have one roadbike, I dont have to go through the removing wheel hassle when weather is changing on a daily basis like in April. Also, it folds away very quickly so seems more convenient if you dont really have dedicated space for a permanent setup.
Just ordered a set of these… can’t wait to try them
Back in the day. I used to race in a team of 8, rollers. Going as fast as you possibly can without getting out of the saddle even a mm. 200m in about 8 seconds ish. For safety you had a person on each side of you holding your bike in case you fell off. Or to stop you falling off. The rollers were connected to a set of huge clocks counting in m 200m to 1500m races. If you fell you did get hurt as your falling a fair distance and often your hammering along on a fixie bike too. The winning tram always had a fixie those with road bikes were way behind the curve.
3:50 Chris has a super guilty face. It would been great for the caption competition. Chris: I was just holding your saddle to slow you down 😂😂😂
I've spent like 6+ hours on rollers in the last three days and although I'm loving them so much I want to sell my Fluid2 Trainer...
OMG now I want this tho, this looks perfect. It's legit everything I want right now for indoor riding...
😍 So miss my old Cortina rollers, which were so loud they sounded like a jet taking off. These are for me - I don't push power, not interested in all out sprints. Looking forward to that contest!
You're giving some of these away? Have I told you how much I love the show? How much I adore every word spoken! Every nugget of information shared??? Now can you fix it so I win?
hahaha nice try Bob!
I love training on the Nero but it has problems with magnets scrubbing and chipping the drums. Had to shim them
I swear to god I was going to comment on the other video asking if you could do a review of the rollers. Thanks a lot!! ❤️
We don't do reviews here at GCN but hope this helps you understand a little more about them!
@@gcntech I know, I meant a video featuring the rollers or something of that sort. This one is good enough for me.
@@gcntech yeah we know, you do advertorials.
That bike is such a beauty
Looks like my ultimate training heaven.
Went on mine this morning and promptly fell off - need some more practice!
Hi Guys, l ordered a set of Elite Nero 2 Rollers 7 months ago. Unfortunately due 2 Covid19 they r still on the work Bench. 😭😢 My Q if u know the answer. What dimensions r the roller drums. Enjoy ur Uploads. Keep up the fab work.
Excellent. Aplause to both for the video!
These look absolutely fantastic. Always fancied some rollers, but the lack of resistance has put me off.
I have been thinking about these nero roller for quite a while now. You haven't yet pushed me over the edge yet, sorry to say.
Got mine today 😊
Good news: it works!!!
So:
A: the Elite Nero rollers are interactive and will connect with Zwift. However...
B: Not with every device. Running the app on my Samsung tablet, it couldn't see it, though I tried both via Ant+ and Bluetooth.
My Acer laptop with Ant+ Dongle recognized it immediately.
So maybe you can update your information. I think it will be helpful for those who contemplate the rollers as well as those who want to use them on Zwift.
I almost hadn't signed up, but now I will.
Still thanks for your help.
That orbea tho😍😍
Tell us about it! It's Hank's new custom My-O colour one!
Aloysius Gonzaga
Orbea have the worst bottom bracket hole I e ever seen.terrible workmanship
OK, but what if I want to control these rollers (resistance) without Zwift etc.? Is it possible for free?
7:30 Did you just get overtaken by someone wearing a GMBN shirt there?
hahaha!
Even worse, that was Matt fron GTN, Hank just got taken by triathlete on a climb, he's never gonna live that one down.
Like that unit a lot. Do You think it would work with the Sirrius Comp from Specizlized (tires for grabble) ???
So You Purchase The Rollers (hardware) What About The Software?? (your 3d interactive course or track)?
I love rollers!!! And know with this is a paradise.. when elite release ? Cost?
Being a 'smart' version, this will probably be expensive. But you can buy the non-smart version for under 300euro, which is cheaper then most trainers.
How is the sound? I got a Direct Drive because of the noise the on wheel trainera make.
I think I prefer the GCN home made rollers
Is it possible to sprint on them? I mean for us mortals not riders like Travolta :) How about doing a 4DP test?
i have elite quick motion rollers and full out standing sprint is not possible, you can do seated sprints no problem, but yeah all out standing 5-10s sprint is not possible at least for me i just rock my bike side to side too much
@@TheTonicro Out of curiosity is that due to too much movement or the rollers not offering enough resistance?
@@k19054 it's probably both
I think there should always be a giveaway when a company advertises a product through gcn.
Like we said, we've got some to give away coming soon!
Good news! :D
Wow
Check out Emotion Rollers... they are so much smoother than theses.... all metal (makes a huge difference)
Sills71 have you tried both?
Have you mastered the rollers yet?
I've a very old set of T- - x rollers which aren't smart, parabolic or easy to use. I dread the days of snow and ice when I spend more time flying across the living room, or bouncing off furniture as I struggle to master them! I'm sure a set of Elite, "Nero" rollers would solve all my problems......... PS. Have you noted how much I love GCN?
I haven't ridden rollers in about 30 years. Love to give these a try (hint alert)
@@bobferguson1696 mate you really need to patch up your roof and get some central heating if you're getting ice and snow on your rollers whilst training in your living room.
I have to concentrate A LOT on a distant point when rollering and have a table/desk/wall nearby. Nope, not mastered them!
I use rollers and GCN training videos for indoor training. I don’t find the lack of resistance particularly problematic. I have a 10sp cassette and move up and down it to adjust the target effort level. 80% = 8th sprocket etc. If I needed to make it harder I could put a bigger chainring on.
I would like to see some hard effort seated and standing with these rollers please
Would there be any sessions similar to this with the rollers but on a track bike?
Wonder how that works if you try to do a hard sprint... would your bike stay on or not?
yeah video is pretty much pointless without showing hard efforts, sprints, ramping behaviour of the resistance unit etc...
Zwift racing is not really the point of these.
I’ve got an older floating set with resistance, not smart ones, and they appear to move backwards and forwards more than these, buy yeah on mine I can do full hard sprints, it’s impossible to go over the front or off the back no matter how hard I try. Not sure these smart ones will be quite the same, to me they don’t look like they move enough to compensate.
@@MrBJPitt turns out some people really like to go all out on indoor trainers, just for training effect itself...
@@jbkltc4469 you could bury yourself with these, without needing to do a sprint effort....
The ago old question is how much training benefits are made using rollers?
They have resistance, so the benefits are very similar to any other trainer.
Did you put low pressure in the tires on purpose ? Looks low to me , maybe more stable ?
just got a new rollers , my front wheel is not spinning , any idea why ?
Can you use it without plugin?
Nice clean kit except for the shoes!!
I like my rollers but this is something else
Do they come in a tartan finish?
Does the floor need to be perfectly level and smooth to use? I would be in my basement with a concert floor not perfectly smooth or perfectly level.
You can easily pick up a couple of 1X6" boards about 5ft long to lay under the rollers and that smooths out the imperfections of the concrete flooring
my room is so small that i have to choose between me bed and roller
顾凯文 I have to keep my tradmill in garage
Are you from Hong Kong?
So, what roller did you choose?
Is this better, or worse, on tires than a turbo trainer?
i see 175 watts youre standing up and sweating?
Never understood why smart trainers that can provide resistance to simulate gradients are rated by absolute gradient ("can simulate up to 7%", etc). Surely the maximum gradient that can be simulated will be dependent on the weight of the rider? If it can provide enough resistance to simulate 7% for someone weighing 90kg shouldn't it be able to simulate almost 10% for someone who is 65kg? Why not rate the resistance in gradient-kilograms or something similar?
yeah, would make more sense just to give watts of resistance.
Hi Neil,
Yes, what you state is correct. The maximum slope is a parameter that depends on the weight and also on the speed.
It is certainly both a "commercial" parameter and a feature that can give you a simple idea -that everyone understands -, of the trainer's ability.
In fact, gradient-kg is not intuitive.
Furthermore power as is is not correct. Indeed it is less intuitive and depends on speed.
@@elitecycling Hmm, yes, it's a tricky thing to represent I suppose. You could say that a trainer could cope with (for example) "4 w/kg at at 10% gradient", which would be reasonably intuitive, although it wouldn't be immediately obvious how it would scale with different gradients.
Any chance of wheel skid if you put out a sudden burst of power?
I have been using an elite arion digital for a few years and that never happened.
@@jmac74 cheers. These could be an awesome choice then when I eventually get the money to upgrade from my turbo trainer.
Just got my Nero unit last week. Product is quite well designed. Anyway I have an issue with power value the unit returned. Between 50 to 70W difference compare to my Rotor Power Meter.... I tried to calibrate it using the My e-training application but no chance. It fails running properly... @GCN team, did you experiment such power discrepancy ? Did you have to calibrate it before using it ? I may missing something out there...
Hi Cristophe,
It should be noted that the variables that impact on the resistance in the rollers are many and it is not easy to always take them all into account.
For this reason it is very important to carefully follow the instructions in the manual to minimize these variables that influence the final accuracy.
Also the calibration must be performed following the indications carefully.
Ignoring the prescriptions of the manual / software can lead to errors and in the case of rollers these can also be important.
In the case you were experiencing some issues please drop us an email to myetraining@elite-it.com.
@@elitecycling Thank you for your comment. Anyway despite the calibration done following the elite technical support, result is the same. Low accuracy. I was not expecting to have a very high accuracy, but not such difference. BTW, calibration procedure of the NERO, under the My eTraining app is quite not user friendly. It just says : start pedaling, and then increase speed. But no other indication. Technical support told me that calibration requires to reach 40 km/h which means more than 400W. It should be good to have the app providing some feedback during the calibration step. Thank you
@@elitecycling If you have a built in powermeter like Quarq, could you simply just use that ? and still get the benefits of the "smart-trainer"?
@@cmoutot interesting, I received my Nero yesterday and never figured out how to get the spindown to work. I rode for 30mins and it still kept saying "start pedaling" but never changed. I tried it multiple times. Did you get it to work? How long did you have to ride at 400w? This would be impossible for many riders, so if that's the required threshold to calibrate it will be a deal breaker for many. Thanks for your time!
Loren Hanson i remember that I had to really output watts to pass over the trigger . Not for a long time but enough power to go over the threshold. I guess I was close to use the 52x11 for that with a nice rpm. Good luck. I went back to my Bushido Tacx smart traîner.
I don't think Jon can actually go a bike. GCN is a long game M. Night Shymalan UA-cam series.
Do you need specific tyres?
No, standard road tyres. Much less wear than on tarmac. Do NOT use the hard rubber tyres made for wheel-on turbo trainers, unless you want to simulate riding on ball bearings...
So this is comparable with Zwift?
Are rollers any harder on your tires compared to actual road or a dedicated rear wheel trainer?
Easier. I see very little wear after a winter of training on my E-Motion rollers.
@GCN Tech: I bought them (partly) based on your review/add. But I can't seem to pair them with Zwift as interactive trainer. How did you do that than? Cause in your case the resistance is adjusted according to the gradient. Thanks for replying.
Just had mine deliverd yesterday and used them today. Like yourself I am using a Samsung S6 tablet but the interactive bit does not seem to be supported properly or fully. What am I doing wrong? previously using a Qubo and they worked fine with the same S6 tablet.
How much?
They see me rollin, they hatin.
😎
@@gcntech Whattt? was this english?
Why didn't they motorize the front roller, so it could spin faster than rear for more stability, and allow for quicker resistance change without loss of stability, and get rid of the flimsy belt?
What's that word you keep mentioning? Suplex?
souplesse. cheers, Jon
Trade up on my 15 year old Minoura ones I think
I loved my Nero roller for Zwifting. After a year of use they starting making loud grinding noise under hill resistance while spitting out large chunks of metal. Either the flywheel or magnets are coming in contact. Poorly designed and expensive trainer. I feel let down.
fun quality tech ... but way too expensive for the average joe non pro cyclist
I got an old turbo trailer for free. Used it three times.. god damn, ita boring. Id rather ride out in the cold
Try a smart trainer and you will be hooked.
power meters in these trainers are way way off
Interesting Product, but 1350w maximum is way too low for an trained athlete. For example one of my teammates is pushing out a max of 1650w. My maximum isn't so high, but still higher than 1350w.
well, you are in 0.05% of cycling population, or so. Does not make sense to over-engineer everything and make it heavier and more expensive for a few seconds of sprinting power that few people will reach. For most people even 600W would be good enough for training.
Yeah, had the same thought. I am pushing out 2.500 W easily with my wife in pursuit. 'swear! This roller is ridiculous! Anything under 3.000 W ist just garbage ...
Yah right. 😂. Some pro riders don’t even push that. Too funny 😂
@@Garfie1d73 funny guy 😂😂
