As someone who has studied mage talents in depth - you're not wrong but missing some data, especially in the arcane.
Dampen Magic reduces damage much more than just 5, as it depends on the spell coefficient of the spell. Yes Arcane Explosion has a tiny 13% coeff which is why you see so little. However nukes like frostbolt have over 80% and you would see a reduction of around 40 damage, and fireball/shadowbolt etc even higher. There's no other way to reduce magic damage so it's pretty strong.
The +10 resistance to all from Magic Absorption will increase your chance to resist a spell by ZERO%.

It's just not enough, it will however give you a 6% chance to resist 25% damage from damage spells, and 2% to resist half the damage.
Arcane Resilience at best gear can reduce physical damage by 3-4% in Late classic gear.
Improved Arcane Explosion and Missiles are used and defended quite strongly by advocates. Uninterruptable Arc missiles can be pretty strong against a hunter at the right time. And Arc Explosion is your only non-frost spammable dps improvement.
Wand Spec can not proc anything, can't do double crits, no benefit from shatter, doesn't snare, triggers GCD etc etc. Going for Wand Spec is a waste of time.
As for Arc Subtlety, 10 resist is probably nicer very early in classic, the 4% extra hit from Arc Focus does nothing in pvp, and both personally might have more use in imp missiles if you use it, from my pov. But that's preference. Certainly more tangible gains but you seem to be focussing on mana conservation and resists from what I can see here, which is your prerogative.
Anyway just some extra information, if you're interested theres a huge word doc of notes I'll link below. Warning -it's not organised, and I have a bias towards fire but I'm sure theres some data in there that would be useful

10 resistance equals 2.5% chance to resist binary spells and 2.5% mean damage reduction against non-binary spells. The talent is okay but it does shine if you stack resistance with better gear and buffs.
This guy knows his shit. Greatwizard also advocates for imp missiles especially in phase 1 before hunters start to fall off.

I think his audio capture has latency and he didn't compensate for it. Digital recording always has latency and always has to be accounted for.

Hey xar, in classic spell resist is abit weird because most of the time its spells doing less damage.
You would need 100 resistance to gain 1% chance to fully resist a spell, hope this helps
Xaryu, great video. I have been debating what I want to main in classic as I like most classes for different reasons. However I have watched a lot of your videos on retail even before you joined method. You inspired me to main a mage. I am also going undead as I love that cannibalize/drink macro you have. The only thing I have a question on is what is your suggestion when it comes to picking a realm to call home? Only thing I don't want is a que time.

You make some good content. Would you be willing to make a series of videos on how you generally deal with each class in a 1v1? (maybe get friends to duel you) I keep getting destroyed by druids because I can't sheep or slow them and I am to the point now where I just run from them with my tail between my legs. I honestly don't think I world pvp any class in the most optimal way because when I do win I barely after popping potions every engagement.
Mages talents totally balanced every single one is the most craziest talent there is between all the classes and they are all in the frost tree of mages. Holy fuckin shit

Now that you respecc your aoe farming, how do you earn money? I've been struggling and wondering what should I farm at lvl 60 as a mage. I am playing vanilla for the first time and I had a great time until lvl 60. Tried BRD runs but mobs throw net....arena patrons have range, so thats out of the equation (died multiple times). My profession is still skinning and enchanting (290). I don't know what to do, what to farm. I just wanna get some income so I can stabilize a bit economically. I don't know much about this game and things that I'm possible to do. I am aoe spec but don't know what to do. I am really enjoying your content and videos. I've been like a sponge of your content. Watching everything. Really great stuff man!

You talk about the slow of CoC for fighting hunters, but doesn't leeway make it so there is no "deadzone"?
The hunter will be able to meele you about 15 yards away due to leeway, and if your further away he can just shoot you.
The only way to avoid leeway is one person standing still, and if you do that he will get close or away so he can still attack, he will only stand still when frozen so the actual slow there does not mather either?
asking couse i am realy wondering, having big problem with hunters atm.

One thing he didn’t talk about was the SNARE improvement from permafrost.
This gives Cone a 60% snare. Stronger than wingclip, hamstring etc.
once you hit with a permafrosted cone, even if they snare you, they are still slower than you. Hence can’t be kites.
Except of course rogues Cripps pois are the exception at wtf 70% snare. GG

Love that someone else sees the power of the resist talents.
At 10 resistance.. You unlock the ability to resist 50% /25% of the incoming damage (spell)... You'll need another 10 resist to unlock the 75% damage resist and you'll have to go all the way to 90 resist to fully resist a spell... Getting to 10 resistances across the board is huge value and there is a type of armor that mages have that also increases resistances too!

What about 3/3 Frost Channelling vs 3/3 Arcane Meditation? Going to assume Frost Channelling is better. Maybe depends on your amount of spirit? Would be nice to test this out.
An important note is that the arcane resist reduction only applies when the target actually has some arcane/fire/frost resistance (unrelated to spell hit). Does anyone other than mage in mage armor have those resists? I suppose in raiding gear they could have fire resist.
Has the cone of cold thing been tested? I think they added DRs to certain slows/roots in 1.4, entangling roots, frost shock, and cone of cold

Can never be too in-depth.
Unfortunately your completely off on how hit and reduced chance to resist works. EP is not giving chance to hit. Spells have 2 calculations first for hit where +hit is used to determine a miss or hit. And then after that resist is calculated to check for a full hit, partial resist, or full resist.
You need 4% hit to get to 99% against pvp targets your level. EP does not help with that at all. EP helps reducing the chance that your spell would be resisted based on spell resistance. The issue is the log does not show hit or resist differently as the retail game does. They purposely moved back to the way things were logged in vanilla.
Take the point out of EP and move it elsewhere. The issue that got you caught up is a lot of the misperceptions from private realms.
@Method Xaryu I would like to see a video where u talk about BiS gear for pvp etc aswell.. Is Robe of the Archmage good for pvp, or not? - due to stam loss etc. Other than that afaik the chest is bis for pve, but unsure about pvp

Dampen and amplify magic aren't real valuable early on because people don't have that much spell power... The dampen and amplify components take into account a spell's spellpower coefficient and the amount of spell power the Caster casting the spell against you has.. That's why this is not a direct 1:1 correlation either way..
This also explains why you won't see a huge difference vs spells like arcane explosion which has one of the lowest spell damage coefficients in the game... You'll see a bigger change if someone is casting fireball or starfire(both which receive 100% bonus from spell power)
One interesting note is amplify magic makes you take More damage from demonic runes resulting in more mana gained... Locks can lifetap for more top but also take more dmg...
There is too much interaction I've tested to get into here but it's a fun spell nonetheless and the points will soon be worth it!
My guild is now forcing people to use PVE spec for raids. Is it possible to argue to use this spec for raiding? I dont want to be completely useless for PVP

I don't think resistance does anything for magic absorption. The resistance stat is a separate from the whole "spell hit" mechanic. The resistance stat simply reduces all the damage you take from a source of that type by a fixed percentage.
Wrong i fighted a lock with my paly that had 180 shadow resist and i was resisiting so many fears like 40% or 50% of them
@@cocoloco7001 I read up more about it and you're right and I was wrong, partially. It depends on the type of spell. If someone casts a direct damage spell at you then resistance will reduce the amount of damage of the spell weighted around particular percentage bins. However, if they cast another type of spell (like Fear) then it will give you an additional chance to resist that spell. However, an additional 10 resistance barely does anything according to the number I have found so far:

@@lazylink yeah but it gets kinda strong with the tier sets for example Tier 1 mage gives 27 shadow resist with the forsaken racial is 37 + the priest buff that gives 60 more in total you have 97 shadow resist and with some extra items for example that wand in total you have 107 and thats pretty good vs locks and shadow priests

My only problems with all these talent guides and videos is it doesn't show you how to spec it up from a certain level, I'm 28 and have no idea what to choose first!
This is not a leveling build. Leveling is a different beast, as you need damage talents, as well as utility talents. You really can't go wrong by just winging it. Just stick to 1 tree all the way down, the diverge.

Cool guide and nice to see you explain this in good detail, I think when it comes to mage pvp you really have to justify going down the Arcane vs Fire tree as is the common debate among experienced private server mage players.
The main reason you go 17 point arcane is ofc for Imp. CS - undoubtedly a very good spell and probably its strongest function is being able to blanket silence other mages and also priests to prevent them from shielding. Silence however isn't as strong as it is in future expansions, Mages can Ice Block your Imp. CS, paladins can still Bubble.

This is a typical build used by players who negate the benefits of Imp. CS and go for Impact/Ignite/Improved Fire Blast and fish for fire stuns/crits and damage in addition to still having Snap/Block/Barrier and looking to Shatter targets. It's just another way to play mage which I don't know if you have seen much of.
If you want to see more , check out the "Fight Club" duel tournament which invited some of the more known private server PvPers, some of the mages used this spec instead of improved Counterspell and consider it better in different matchups.
Xaryu you have an error on your AOE build, u want imp blizzard only 2 points. if your do 3 points imp blizard and u cone of cold the slow from cone of cold doesn't aplly if u put 2 points in imp blizard u can still aply cone of cold slow efect

So if you cap out at 99% with 3% hit, what are the two points in Arcane Subtlety for? (of course you can argument, that people might have stacked resistances, but wouldn't that actually speak for putting more points in the "hit" talents?
For things like polymorph and counterspell since elemental precision is only for fire and frost spells.

7/10 spec - You should get 5/5 Improved Arcane Missile - it's the only casted spell with 100% chance to avoid interruption. Should also get 2/5 improved blizzard

I don't know about those resist. I world pvp alot and not once had resist a spell against other players. So i find that useless. I instead put it on fireblast and fire stunt.

Can you arcane ex kite with clearcast aoe grind? Or not because of leeway?
Leeway also works for spells, meaning you can AE + CoC grind since your spells will be hitting from higher range than usually if both you and your targets are moving. If you do this properly you shouldnt get meleed much.
Impressive especially considering how this class spends .more time sitting than any other.
When you have to sit down so much you get a lot of time to think.
