I can tell this was filmed a day or so a go, clouds are back today. Mites are 1 thing I do not let get out of hand, control your mite load and you save yourself so many problems. But I think people also use them as the easy escape goat, there are a lot more things impacting bees now days then just mites. Many of peoples Winter issues could have been queens, many keepers had a lot of problems with queens last season.
I made the mistake of not doing a mite count as we went into fall and lost my bees about 6 weeks ago. The brood boxes were very heavy with stores and no sign of other diseases. It was a 2023 nuc that had been previously treated with Apivar. I treated again soon after I installed it. When supers were on I treated with formic and after they were off, I treated again with Apivar. I did one mite count during that time and I think it was 3. I didn’t do any further mite counts after August and did not treat with oxalic (due to laziness primarily). It’s a bummer because they seemed super strong going into fall.
Newbee (get it) question. Last year was my first-ever attempt, and I lost my hive in mid-fall, much like you describe in the video. There weren't a bunch of dead bees, they were just....gone. Getting to my questions, shouldn't I just assume mites and treat them accordingly? Also, have you done a video on the best way to treat mites? Thanks!
Welcome to beekeeping! You’re old hat now that you’ve had your first season 😉 we assume mites but also conduct alcohol Washes to make sure they’re under the acceptable threshold. We’re currently in CA but we do have several videos on mite treating/testing if you search within our channel Best regards!
Hi Roche 😉I hope you’re having a great week. Lena here from Kalkal I sent you an email about boot cooperation . We think the waterproof & anti-slip rubber boot will be a great helper for you when you are outdoors. We will be happy to send you free samples of boots I look forward to working with you in the near future. Please let me know if this is of interest to you.
Thank you for this video. Appreciate it

Sorry to hear they didn’t make it - that is a bummer. At this point you want to see less then one per 100 bees
I lost around 10 hives this winter, all had thousands of mites on bottom board and I treated like crazy before winter. So frustrating.
Sorry to hear that - it’s amazing how much we’re having to treat simply to stay static
