Thank you very much Jim for your 10 part Luminar 4 series tutorials. I found each and everyone of them quite useful. I expect to review them again now and then, and practice what you so ably describe. I look forward to your future Luminar 4 tutorials. Perhaps they could target some of your efforts made with earlier Luminar versions and show how to produce their effects with Luminar 4, focussing particularly on the ones featuring your favorite artistic edits.
Thanks Andre for watching and yes I have quite a few ideas for future videos, including some coming pretty soon. :-)
I've been lazy to really learn this Luminar 4, and now really geeked by your teaching.

Awesome, thanks so much Steven!
6-1-2020: Just bought Lum4; deep binged this past weekend. LOVE the software....and YOUR vlogs to help me understand and USE it.
Just like (new) cameras can excite the photographic soul, so too does new software- unleashing newfound enthusiasm via creativity and capabilities. And I've sucked at Photoshop since day one. Only about 20 years worth.
thanks much and hope you have a lot of fun with Luminar, and yes lots of videos here to help ;-)
Fantastic 10-Part Series Jim! Thanks for all your assistance and insight! Happy Thanksgiving!
Thanks so much I appreciate that!
just want to join into the general praise of this series, the final part about luminosity masks I still need to digest: liked the result too much to brush easily (no pun intended) over what I did not fully grasp. Thanks a lot, Jim!
Thanks so much for watching Wolfgang!
Great video on Masking Jim. I learned a lot about masking filters and layers. Very educational. Great presentation. Happy Thanksgiving.
Thanks so much Nick and Happy Thanksgiving to you as well!
Hey Jim, really appreciate the quick run through Luminar 4! I just purchased it and also use PSE, it is the perfect complement. It also helps speed up the workflow which is the big thing using AI! I have been used PS, NIC and several others in the past so your run down, 10 part series really helps me get up and running with this thing. Just wanted to thank you and let you know I will be watching all your new postings and catch up on the older ones as we move along.
Thanks for all you do!
Rich aka Moonpie001
thanks much for watching Rich and glad the videos have helped - and more coming soon! :-)
Thank you for your hard work on these videos. I am a new user on Luminar 4. I am trying to compare Luminar 4 with Photoshop Elements. Your videos help me to get up to speed quickly in Luminar.
Thanks for watching and glad they help!

Hi Jim, I only just "discovered" you. Your tutorial was extremely good. Very well presented, nice and clear and easy to follow. One of the best videos I have seen on Luminar 4. Best wishes to you. Ray (Australia).
Thanks for the kind words Ray and glad you found me! Lots of Luminar 4 videos here (nearly 50 already!) so hopefully they continue to give you some useful tips. Thanks for watching!
Jim Nix your tutorials are phenomenal thank you. I learn so much!
Awesome, glad to hear that Louise and thanks for watching!
Hi Jim, hardly seems like 10 days have passed! Thanks again for your videos and hard work. Happy Thanksgiving! I’m thankful for you!
Thanks much and yes it was a quick 10 days, so I am taking tomorrow off for the holiday. But I have more coming Friday and Saturday. (No rest LOL). Thanks!
You are doing a great job. Thanks a lot!
Thank you so much!
I just went through the 10 "New to Luminar 4?" videos after installing the trial version, and all I can say is WOW! I have been struggling with darktable (similar to lightroom) for quite some time now, and was getting quite frustrated because it is soooo overly complicated and I just couldn't produce any good results. I didn't want to go back to Adobe, and I knew there had to be something else out there. I hated leaving Linux and going back to Windows, but after working with Luminar for a couple of days, I'm sold, and I will keep Windows on this computer just so I can use Luminar!! As a wedding/portrait photographer, I don't want to spend a lot of time editing and fine tuning photographs.....time is important, and when there are 1,000-2,000 or more images to go through from a wedding, I don't want to spend all my time in front of the computer massaging each photograph to get good results. The AI in Luminar is phenomenal!! Just a couple of sliders and I have a beautiful image. Then, if I want to spend more time fine-tuning, that option is available also. And if you have used any image editing software in the past, Luminar will be VERY easy to learn. They have done an amazing job of making the program very simple to understand and use.
To Jim: Your teaching style is fantastic....you keep on topic and get to the point without extra "stuff" around the edges, while explaining things in a manner that is easy to understand. Thank you for your efforts, and I look forward to watching more of your videos!!
To those who say that the program is too slow on their computer: If you look at Skylum's website, they give the recommended hardware for running Luminar, and it looks like the program requires quite a bit of horsepower to run. There is a lot going on under the hood of a program like this. I am using some older hardware and it is running quite slow on my machine. I have plans to upgrade the processor, motherboard, and graphics card to accommodate the workload.
Thanks so much for watching and for the kind words Robert, I really appreciate both. Glad to hear you like my videos and of course there are new ones coming every week. Glad they have helped and that you are enjoying Luminar so much. Thanks!
Great video. Thanks, Jim.
thanks for watching Robert!
Great series of introduction videos on Luminar 4. They have been very helpful for discovering or going further with this software. Thanks a lot your hard work.
Thanks so much for watching Eric!
Thank you Jim for your help the tutorials have been of immense help
Awesome glad to hear it Mohan and thanks for watching!
I’m new to Luminar Jim but this series of videos is excellent, thank you.
Glad to hear they help, and thanks for watching Chris!
Great videos Jim. I've just bought luminar and your tutorials have accelerated my understanding of the program. It's a pity more viewers aren't taking 2 seconds to Like your videos, promote your channel and increase your revenue. This video has 7k views and only 480 likes. There should be closer to 7k likes, as it does exactly what the title of the video promised.
Thanks so much, that is very kind of you to say, and glad to hear it has helped! Thanks for watching.
I'm a brand new user of Luminar 4 and I devoured your videos! So much good info! I bought the program for the specific purpose of creating product photos where the background is dropped out (maybe to a plain, solid backdrop) and the product is front and center. After watching your series, I'm not sure this is possible. If it is possible, can you point me to your tutorial which explains this process? Thank you!
Hi there and thanks for watching, and glad the videos have helped. You are correct, you cannot easily cut out the background and replace it in Luminar 4. You are better off doing that in another app. Pixelmator, Topaz Mask AI, Photoshop, etc. Luminar 4 is great for editing photos but does not have advanced masking brushes, etc so this sort of thing is difficult or impossible to do in Luminar. Thanks.
Jim thank you for the videos as I am brand new to Luminar and you are a fantastic teacher! Can you please do a video on raw development?
Thanks for watching and yes I will likely do a video on developing a raw file, just not sure when yet. Still quite a few things I want to cover. thanks!

Thanks so much and to you and yours as well!
Thanks for the series, Jim I really like the way you explain things. I've never used the luminosity mask before now I'll be using it. Happy Turkey Day!

Wow great series Jim! Thank you so much for simplifying these tutorials for us Beginners. Look forward to seeing your future videos.

haha thanks I get a little excited about this stuff 😁
Thank you so much for your videos, Jim I would be lost with Luminar 4 without them, and your Affinity ones also.
Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.
Thanks so much for watching I appreciate it!
Having viewed basically all the tutorials related to AP and also most of what Jim does, I can't find anywhere that Jim has done any tutorials related to AP. Maybe either of you could point me to those as I am sure Jim's method of providing great info would be valuable for me an others to view.
@@phlotographer good catch and you are correct, I have never used Affinity. I have been asked about it and have considered buying it, but finding the time to learn it and make tutorials feels a bit overwhelming at the moment. Perhaps the reference was intended for Aurora HDR? Thanks and I guess I was moving too quick to catch that myself. :-)
@@JimNix Hi Jim, sorry for confusing you with another of my subscriptions with Affinity Photo. I am taking online Affinity clases and things seem to run together in my old brain (79).
@@oldguy1940 oh there is no reason to apologize for that at all, hope you are enjoying Affinity and Luminar as well!
Great video Jim! Can you use a luminosity mask like you do in Lightroom (Range Mask)? I like to adjust the range of brightness / darkness that the mask affects.
thanks much Mike but sadly you cannot adjust the mask like that, the only thing you can do is erase parts of it
Hi Jim ~ I always look forward to your videos on Luminar 4. I am leaving a comment on this particular video because my question has to do with masking. Since Luminar 4 does such a great job of sky replacement, they obviously have the built in ability to create a very detailed mask. This seems to perform a task similar to what "Topaz Mask AI" does. Do you think that the Skylum folks would ever allow users to create our own detailed masks? I think that would be a huge upgrade. Also, "Topaz Mask AI" can be used as a plug-in for Photoshop (which I don't use). I'm wondering if it would ever be available as a plug-in for Luminar 4. That would be great as well.
thanks much and yes I am hopeful they give us access to these masks some day, that would be awesome - and I have not used Mask AI as a plugin to Luminar and not sure if it would work, but it would be nice to have that
Nicely explained Jim, I didn't know that a luminosity mask applies such a nice "auto" fix. That's really cool. I hope you've been enjoyin a few more tacos! Thanks again sir!
Thanks so much I really appreciate it!
Thank you so much for your videos - they are so helpful!
Thanks for watching and glad to hear that!
great, excellent, explanations, thx Jim ;-)
thanks so much!
Thanks, Jim I learn lots from your video's and still learning it's lots of fun I made a folder in my UA-cam channel called Jim Nix Photography folder and Jim Nix Luminar folder all your videos group together. Because its a lot easier for me and my photography friend's to find your videos and it's on the public channel. Thanks, again 😊🇨🇦
Glad the videos help, and thanks for watching!
This is extremely helpful
Glad to hear that and thanks for watching!
Love the videos! I learn something new each time I watch.
One question about masks though!
So I have about 50 pictures of a bobcat on the hunt, and I created basic a basic look for my first picture and synced them all. However, on that first image I created 4 other layers with masks (each I used a brush mask to edit the details, ai structure, and dodge and burn on only the bobcat and not the background).
My question is since the bobcat moves and I cannot simply copy/paste the masks to all 50 photos to bring out the detail, is there a way to add these specific edits/masks to all 50 photos without having to go through each one to brush over the bobcat and apply the tools?
Hi Nicholas and thanks for watching, and good question. As far as I know, a Look can't contains layers. But I guess you could make a Look for each layer, name them accordingly, and then stack them on each image. I can't think of an easy way around this right now. Maybe worth asking support to see if they have other ideas? Thanks.
@@JimNix thanks for the help!

Great job, appreciate your efforts. Happy Thanksgiving
Thanks so much Dan I appreciate you watching!
OK, why do you adjust the color first? Or is it best just to peak out the color sat as you did and adjust from there? Seems backwards, but it also works very good! You really are very good with the colors!
I always drag the slider to increase the effect, and then use the brush to paint it in. Just how it works best for me. Thanks for watching!
@@JimNix Thank you so much!!
@@LonStar3000 you're welcome
Jim, thanks for your Luminar videos, they are very helpful. I am a beginner photographer, and I am confused about the layers: can you please explain why exactly we need them? If you create different layers, you just "pile" them on each other?.. Why can't you just edit the original photo? Thanks in advance!
Yes you just pile them on top of each other. Layers give you a lot of flexibility to add new things to your photo. A layer can be a texture, or a reuse of a filter from a previous layer, and more. It's just another benefit of Luminar 4 and provides a lot of editing flexibility. Thanks!
@@JimNix Thank you!

Again a delight to follow, thanks Jim. The quality of the video is rather low and so I find it hard to read the text on the menu (and that's on a high quality monitor).
Thanks much and yep it's recorded in 1080p so eventually I will need to up that to 4k. Thanks for watching.
Revisited the video, and the quality is now OK. Weird, something on my side it seems. :(
@@remcovan oh ok thanks for letting me know. I get that sometimes as well...could be bandwidth, or UA-cam, or a million other things. :-)
Hi Jim, happy thanksgiving. Hope when going to deep dive.... giving examples for doing composite photos, mixing photos in one.
Hi there and thanks and that can be a challenge in Luminar, depending on what specifically you are trying to do. But I definitely plan to do some experiments. Thanks!
Thank you, sir!
thanks for watching!
Thanks for an excellent video. In luminosity masking , can we control that the effect is on the dark areas or in the bright area ?
Do you plan to do more videos on luminosity maskin
Thirdly in layers, one one layer can we apply multiple filters, OR one filter per layer
Thanks
Thanks and once the luminosity mask is applied, you can then use the brush mask to remove it from certain areas. And yes more videos on it for sure. For layers, you can basically do anything you want on any layer. You can add multiple filters etc. Thanks.
this guy is amazing , Ty sir
Thanks so much for watching!
Great series of videos. Really helpful. I really wish there was an eleventh just to see how you manage the extra digit at the start of your video 😂.
Look forward to your next videos. 👍
LOL that actually made me LOL - thanks for watching!
thanks for the video. There is one critical point that is not clear to me. your video at 3:50 jumps from an image that is highly saturated back to the original unsaturated image at which point you start applying the mask that has high saturation. Could you be clearer as to what step(s) you take so that the saturation tool only applies to the masked portion of the image? With my own original image I click on the edit mask label and select brush. Then I set the saturation control to high, but that immediately affects the entire image, even before I start masking. Thanks in advance for your help.
Hi Stephen, when you drag a slider it impacts the entire photo, such as the saturation example in this video. But after selecting Brush, as soon as you start painting, it will reset the entire photo to not show the impact of the slider, and the impact of the slider will only show where you brush it in. That is essentially you painting the adjustment into the photo. Thanks and hope that helps.
Hi Jim, this explained masking with your usual excellence. I opine: someone mentioned 'stacking' images in Luminar 3, and I wonder if Luminar 4 can do this whatever it is, please?
Hi JB and you can add a new image layer to "stack" and image (I did a video about this a while back for exposure blending) but they are likely talking about focus stacking, which could theoretically be done in L4 but would require a lot of precise masking work. I haven't tried it but is something I get asked about a bit. Thanks.
@@JimNix Thanks, Jim.
@@JB-xi5ek you are welcome
It would be nice if Syklum could provide a smart mask (AI), kind of like the luminosity mask but based on drawing in the points you want to go around and then do a auto correction. I know I'm getting into Photoshop territory now. That would give me most of what I need.
Yes that would be amazing and I am hopeful that they do this someday. It can't be too much of a stretch from automatic sky replacement, etc. Thanks!
Thanks I just bought the app a couple days ago. My other apps are ON1 2020 and affinity photo. I like what this app can produce. Definitely a Swiss Army knife kind of thing.
Thanks Scott and yes Swiss Army Knife is a good analogy. Thanks for watching!
Which apps do you like between Luminar 4 and ON1 2020 ?
I like them both, but ON1 2020 has more options to me. I was fascinated with luminar’s sky replacement. I haven’t seen any other app do such a clean job. I just got ver 4 so I’m still learning, so... both apps are reasonably priced, so buy both...;-)
@@scottburrow8293 haha yes more toys ;-)
@@scottburrow8293 If you was going to buy one which one ?
i am struggling new to editing .thank you much

Jim, is there a way to make a mask that has a straight edge or line? I Lightroom for example you can use a brush and start to paint and then hold down the control key ( I think it’s the control key) and set another point so you have a straight line between the two. I have a lot of scenes of railroads and I like to highlight the rails and using this method in Lightroom saves me a lot of time. Wondering if there is a way to do this in luminar 4
HI Gary and yes you can do the same in Luminar. I can't remember the exact key, but it's Control or something like that, and then it makes a straight masking line for you. Thanks.
Jim: Can you do a video on creating a precision mask in a program like Topaz Remask and using that mask in Luminar. I read the mask can be pasted to a layer so maybe that is the way to do it, but I'd like to see it demoed in one of your videos, which you might call Advanced Masking.
Hi Norm and I do not believe you can make a mask in one product and then paste it into place in Luminar. I haven't tried it but I do not believe it will work. I will have to take a look at that tomorrow as I am tied up today. Thanks.
Thanks for the overview Jim. I've been looking for the invert button all week. Is there a alphabetical listing anywhere that you know of that shows where all the tools are? It would sure be a big help while switching over fro L3 to L4.
Hi there and thanks, and no there is not an alpha listing of everything, sorry. Once you use it for a while you will get really used to it and things will feel really fluid. It took me a little bit but it's second nature now. Thanks.
Hi Jim, 15:02 re your typing here, if you were working on producing a Look, and didn't want to upset the settings, would you save it as a Look or cover it with another adjustment layer to experiment further, please?
Hi JB and usually when I get somewhere that I like, but still have the itch to experiment, I will add a new adjustment layer so all my previous edits are not disturbed. I only make a Look when I come up with something that I really like on a photo, on the base layer. Thanks.
@@JimNix Thanks, Jim.
@@JB-xi5ek you bet
I really appreciate the series on Luminar 4. Very informative, thanks for all of the hard work you have put into the videos.
Just a quick question, could you, at some time, go through the settings for exporting, to get the best results.
Thanks Roy and yes I can take a look at exporting options, I appreciate the suggestion.
Jim
Evening . I was using layers . What I was doing was erasing a large area so was taking a little at a time. I got to layer 9 and Luminar would not let me create a new layer. I could carry on working on that layer but not create a new one. Have you come across this?
Hi there Hugh. I believe there is a limit of 10 layers in Luminar 4. So I assume that would be the base photo + 9 more perhaps. I never went that high, but I seem to recall that being the limit. So I am guessing you hit the limit on this one. Thanks.
@@JimNix Thanks for that. As ever it is the little things that they don't tell you. Keep making the videos I enjoy them
@@hughellins1422 thanks for watching them!
If I use bracket exposures, -2, 0, 2, is there a way to 'merge' them for the end result to be similar to blending in HDR? Do they have to be 'painted' on one at a time or is there a quicker way for the final result? Thanks Jim!
Sorry but you cannot merge exposures like an HDR in Luminar. You would have to add a new image layer for each image and manually brush mask in. Thanks.
If you have it you can, in Aurora do the HDR merge and Aurora should send it back to Luminar.
I’m still a little unclear about using layers but i can now experiment hopefully and all will become clear!
thanks for watching!
I bought Luminar 4 and it has a lot of AI stuff which I’m not necessarily into. I’d like to be able to just adjust the “standard” RAW image parameters like I would in Lightroom without using things like “smart contrast” (which sounds like contrast using AI help) does Luminar have a group of “regular” RAW parameters where it doesn’t mix in AI parameters? If so I’d love to see a video on this. Thanks for all your help and the videos you post.
If you use the Light filter, it's pretty much like LR except for Smart Contrast. You can also use things like Advanced Contrast and Adjustable Gradient which are not AI based. In fact most filters are NOT AI based, though there are so rather good AI ones too. Thanks.
Jim Nix ah ok...thanks for the information
