    This IS the most important tool in Luminar NEO. Get it right and build a foundation for the rest of your photo edit. Get it wrong or miss it all together and your edit will quickly unravel!
    The develop RAW tool has a lot going on but we need to understand how to use it properly because it sets the underlying frame work for a good photo edit. We can get as creative as we want but without that strong underlying technical edit we're going to come unstuck.
    Following the demonstration of how to set up the develop RAW tool I'll take you through a quick "creative edit" at the end of this landscape photo. But please note the principals covered are relevant to any genre of photography!

    This video makes it easy for any level of photographer to understand how to get a great image to work with. Anthony goes through each step so well and explains it's purpose while demonstrating each tool. I love that he not only explains general editing processes and purposes, but then he takes you though his own individual thought process while applying those steps. So well done!

    Thank you very much for this video. I've been Luminar user since 2018 version and I find it the most powerful creattive photo editor, much more intuitive than Photoshop. One issue I've been having, however, from the first install and now the same in Neo. This is a problem with using a crop tool for perspective correction. I shoot a lot of landscapes and architecture using wide-angle lenses, like 10-12 mm. When you use it from a close point, there's always a distortion of "walls falling off". In Photoshop, i can use a crop tool to align the buildings by using crop in iondividual corners, but in Luminar I don't have a control of individual corners to align it. I was using my old version of Photoshop just for this one function, but it's not accesible anymore. When I submitted - repeatedly - this question to the Luminar team, they gave me the same advice as if I'd be using Photoshop. However, it doesn't work; maybe it works on Apple version, but not in Windows. Lens' achromatic correction doesn't do a trick. Do you have any advice how to correct

    • @AnthonyTurnham
      @AnthonyTurnham  Рік тому +1

      You can use perspective correction / transform for geometric changes along with the crop tool. It's the last sub tool listed in the develop tool.

Also, during the current crisis I wish you would mention in any videos relating to Luminar that Skylum is a Ukrainian company headquartered in Kiev and that by purchasing their products you are supporting their cause.

    Thank you Anthony. Excellent tutorial. You show that once you leave the Develop RAW tool you lose Develop “RAW”. In fact, I believe, you can go into “Edits” and there you will find the Develop RAW and you can continue using the Develop RAW tool. Try it out. Let me know if I’m correct. Love your videos. I’ve learned a great deal.

    • @AnthonyTurnham
      @AnthonyTurnham  2 роки тому +1

      Yes you're right Tony. It'll still be there in edits but sat at the very bottom of the stack. My point is that you can't do a raw edit later in the editing process. Even if you go through the "back door" to access it rather than applying it initially it will still be treated as the first tool by the NEO engine.
      Cheers for watching and the comment :)

    Hey G'Day from Ayr Nth Queensland Australia, after watching a few of your videos I decided to purchase Luminar NEO yesterday, must say pretty impressive the only thing I should have looked at or was told was the minimum system requirements required as it's extremely slow on my computer, had I known what the minimum requirement I would have put off purchasing it until I got a suitable computer, so when I get a new computer I'll just have to purchase NEO again, oh well lesson learnt Frankie

    Just bought Luminar Neo for the remove dust spots and had no idea how to use the raw editor for the initial edits. I’m developing Old B&W negs from the 60s of people who are now well known but reaching the end of their life. I am getting decent results but it takes 10-15 minutes to get rid of the dust spots one by one in Pixelmator despite liberal amounts of compressed air. So I’ll follow this tutorial and do the same kind of RAW edit you recommend in this tutorial to see if I can up the quality of the end results. Just what I needed to start exploring the new software. Thanks.

    some nice touches here with the programme, but, I was always taught to crop the image first before applying major edits. Because the info within the image changes when you crop

    • @AnthonyTurnham
      @AnthonyTurnham  2 роки тому

      The histogram will adapt to a newly cropped image but there currently isn't a histogram in this version of neo so it's all good. In anycase if you're aware of the data you're cropping and where it sits in the tonal range it doesn't really matter if you crop first, or last. I prefer at the end as I know my entire photo canvas looks the way I want and then if I want to re-crop later I know any pixels I reintroduce will be good.

    • @AnthonyTurnham
      @AnthonyTurnham  Рік тому +1

      At that point you can use the develop tool only with the 16bit export from HDR Merge. However, the main benefit of Develop Raw is so you can pull back as much dynamicrange from your file, and because HDR Merge has done that for you, using develop raw isn't as imperative as it was if using a single raw frame.

    Really great videos, Anthony. I've had Neo for a few days (bought with your promo code, thanks!) and I was convinced to buy it from watching your videos for a while. I love seeing your workflows for really great insight into a solid creative process.
    I'm a long-time Capture One user and I was looking for a clipping warning when setting black and white points in the Develop Raw tool. I found it! It might be worth mentioning that keyboard J toggles clipping on and off. Question - do you use clipping warnings, or do you prefer to do it by eye?
    Second question, do you suggest users of the more traditional raw editors like Capture One or Lightroom should do their raw edits in Neo? Apart from the obvious seamless workflow all within Neo, which I can see is a plus. Is Neo a better raw editor than the others?

    • @AnthonyTurnham
      @AnthonyTurnham  Рік тому +1

      Hi David, thanks for the comment. Great questions. So yeah, J to toggle clipping warnings is a great hotkey. If I recall correctly it was introduced after this video was made. As far as raw editing goes, no I don't feel NEO has any particular advantage there over Capture One or Lightroom. The true bebnefit of NEO comes in the creative tools that are in addition to its raw editing capabilities. Cap1 and LR are still great options for a raw only workflow.

But I do have a question on the RAW file when editing, in your opinion, we need to do the high dynamic range image in RAW file then follows with tools. So all the presets or your own presets would not be very effective in saving time for editing images since we should do it in RAW and going through all other editing as we think fit into that particular image.

    I just found your tutorials and find them amazing. Thanks much for your work. I have a question. As I often take bracketed images and combine the in Aurora, this then limits the ability to utilize RAW as the initial step in editing an image using your recommended first step as the merged image is no longer a raw file. I believe then that the merged image provides as much flexibility as using a raw file with the correct profile as a starting base image. Also, I have a question. I seem to be having difficulty finding how to add them to my catalog. If you have a video on this can you tell me how to find it. You have opened a new world for me using the software. Until today, I was not impressed with NEO and I am now excited to use it again. Thanks again. You have a new fan.

      Thanks so much Pauline! Great idea to do an initial merge in Aurora. Done right this should give you all the data in the file you need for a good edit. Adding photos or folders is pretty simple by pressing the plus icon in the library and navigating to the right file/ folder. I'll see what I can do regarding a video... 😊

    Why not use the clipping mask to the whites and blacks?

      It wasn't available in NEO when this was recorded. Clipping warnings were added a bit later.

    Any luck on getting the Auto Distortion feature working? I've tried and tried, but i've got no luck. I hoped it would be fixed with an update, but still no fix. It's pretty annoying at this point to have to manually fix the distortion in each of my RAW photos. Thanks for the video?

      Hi Wouter. You have to use jt before anything else. If you apply a different tool then you're no longer editing a raw shot and so develop raw turns into simply develop.

    Thanks for some interesting pointers.
    Unfortunately my experience with Luminar Neo has been that I have lost the last two edits I’ve done on which I spent many hours.
    Re-pened the software and one image was missing completely and the other one was there but with absolutely none of the edits attached, tried to load from the backup files but made no difference.
    Given the situation in Ukraine I don’t really want to hassle them but it’s just super disappointing as I don’t feel confident to waste any more time if I’m just going to lose all the work.

    I’d be curious to know if you have a good method for using both Lightroom and Luminar catalogs simultaneously and what your process looks like. I.E. catalog through Lightroom and then add the folder to Luminar (Neo and/or AI)? I normally use Luminar as a PS plugin, but obviously this eliminates the Develop Raw option.

      Hi mate. For a speed boost, a bit of extra memory in your computer goes a long way! Because it's got a lot of AI features it can be pretty processor intensive and memory hungry.

    How do you know when you've blown out the hilights? Where's the histogram?

    • @AnthonyTurnham
      @AnthonyTurnham  2 роки тому

      Currently there isn't one. Hopefully it'll be in the next update. For now, it's back to the basics of a well calibrated sips monitor with limited light pollution in the working environment. In those conditions with or without a histogram it's pretty easy to judge.

    Always excellent advice, thanks for your time and effort on these vids. Do you consider where a photo is intended to be displayed as part of your editing? For example, some places may have a different vibe (Modern, country, urban, home...) and less color or flatter image may display better with the surrounding decor.

      Hi Phil. Yes, absolutely. If I know where an image will be displayed I'll be mindful of that during the edit.

    Hi, Anthony, as always very instructive, it makes the learning process so much easier having a no nonsense tutorial. I have a question for you, in Neo there is the profile section in editing, but my EOS 200d is not listed, but there is a download option, but how? I would ask Skylume but they have other things on their mind right now.

    • @AnthonyTurnham

      The profile would be from Canon. Hopefully a bit of digging on their website would uncover it. Put it on your computer and then point Luminar towards it.

    So, RAW processing is kind of a more fundamental set of changes than if you’d be doing the same things on a JPEG? Just wondering how - for example - an exposure slider works differently on a RAW image as opposed to on a JPEG image.

    • @AnthonyTurnham
      @AnthonyTurnham  2 роки тому +1

      It's not that it works differently, it's just that a RAW file has more depth. Therefore highlights, shadows and exposure are all more easily recovered and manipulated because of the data held within the raw file compared to the very limited jpeg.

    Hi again Anthony! Despite now having launched three editions of photo editing software: Luminar 4, Luninar AI and now Luminar New, there are still no tools to enhance pet portraits. It would be nice if those guys at Skylum also incorporated pet enhance tools into their portrait category. 😻😻 After all, we treat our four legged friends as part of our family. Hi Anthony! I notice the return of layers with Luminar Neo, but I can't separate the individual layers to work on them independently. Also I noticed you can add light effects to these new layers, for example 'flares' and 'sparklers'. However, I also purchased some new ones 'Weather Effects' and 'Winter Overlays', but although they were advertised with the 'Neo' logo, I can't download them to the Neo assets file - disgruntled! Felix the Cat. 😾😾

    • @AnthonyTurnham

      Hi Felix. I'm sure we can get them working for you in Neo too. Can you share them with anthonyeditsyourphotos@gmail.com? I'll see if I can put a video together showing what to do...
      If the files are large a dropbox share may be the way forward...
      To edit the layer yo want, select it from the thumbnail on the left and then the edits you then do are applied to that layer.
