Instead of spending 30K+ on a new EV, you could take your existing car, replace all the consumables, replace the suspension and bushes and exhaust, replace all the relays and bulbs and then have a valeter refresh the paintwork and get all those stone chips sorted out and still have plenty of money left over for tax fuel and insurance. It would also last longer and be more reliabe.

Done it with my Hyundai S111 2ltr coupe, respray, rust done, new shocks and discs plus other sundries and a new hi-fi all for around £10K. Reliable, cheap to insure and fuel, nice to drive and looks cool, what more do you want?
I can see this becoming more and more a trend with older cars.

@@garyquartley1084Nope, it's coming down and there are great incentives for big discounts with Tesla, Gridserve, Ionity etc for those who are doing the mileage. When I visit my daughter in Huntingdon, I have access to a Pod point slow charger (7Kwh) in a car park that is a 2 minute walk away for 29p per kWh with no parking restrictions or fees.
Ideal for a top up over a few hours. FYI - 3 hours would give me a range of 100 miles for £6, while we are visiting.
Tesla in France gave me 200 miles range in 20 minutes for £12 while we went for a butty.
We drove to T5 at Heathrow on a full home charge, (200 miles) for £3.50p then drove to a Tesla supercharger in the car park of a nearby hotel.
In the 25 minutes we were there, we watched the football in the bar, then drove off and the next top up was in Aberystwyth the following day. We covered about 700 miles over a long weekend at a cost of a out £70, home to home and only charged when we were having breaks.
Don't believe all the crap that non EV drivers tell you.

I have my 9 year old AUDI S3 from new, low mileage, no intention of changing or parting with it. Wife had a 14 year old Ford Fiesta (from new) which had always been serviced with the main dealer it was purchased from but in the last service (according to a chap from the AA) Ford mis mounted the drive shaft when replacing the starter motor and the dealers have literally sabotaged her car so we had hoped to get a few more years (great little car) but she has now switched to an 2021 AUDI A3 1.8.....we would have bought new however literally all the petrol engines new now are 1 litre 3 pot engines so there was no logical reason to spend more money on silly. Similarly our daughter has just gotten her first car which (against my wishes) is a 2019 Audi A1 Sportback S line Competition which is also a 2 litre as new A1's are also 1 litre 3 pots. The latter two cars have been purchased from 5 year bank loans. All my cars have been long term "owned" vehicles.....not my fault if other people cannot understand "Total Cost Of Ownership" and think they're getting a better deal leasing.
So yes.......we haven't bought electric for a variety of issues.......and yes......we haven't bought brand new because the engine options weren't there (even when looking at other brands) AND.....I must add.........don't think you can go and buy a used car at the main AUDI dealer if you're paying cash.......no no no.........we had a double experience with my wife where we wanted to put a deposit down with a main dealer for a used AUDI and in both circumstances the minute they knew we were cash buyers "oh.....I'm terribly sorry but "that" car is already sold" yet in both cases the cars were still marketed online for another week or two after our enquiry. Beware.....a lot of main dealer ads seem to be a carrot to get your details so that they can sell you the car they want to sell you.

Most cars these days cost more than £40,000 and so the additional VED of £410 has to be paid from years 2 - 6 (years of renewals, not first VED on registration). In addition, any car first registered before 1st April 2017 has a much better VED regime (no £40,000 stuff). Thus, any car more than 6 years old, or first registered before 1st April 2017 has vastly lower VED costs. At the lower end of the market, this is important.

Heffalumps wandering around the living room time Geoff. As in most aspects of the retail market, we are presented with a product what they wish to sell, not what we want to buy, and car manufacturers are the most culpable in this "arrogant" approach to sales. The tell us we need "electric windows" when a handle is foolproof, and then charge 500 quid to replace the actuator when it packs up. Then there is the sensor which leads to an MoT failure, resulting taking half the vehicle to bits to replace. And don't get me started on cambelts.
The best vehicle I ever had was a series one land rover. Okay it drank petrol, but providing the owner had a box of spanners and a welder, they were indestructible.
Now all present day land rovers are good for is being nicked for the "export" market. Your £1,500 850 will soon be costing twice that once the penny drops and I just wonder what is a viable alternative? Japanese engines last forever yet rot away underneath. Decent well maintained german cars are expensive to buy and maintain. So it will be interesting to see what your panel comes up with. Incidentally the only vehicle that cost me more than 2 grand is my discovery 2, (£2,500), and that is only because it suited my needs. (No, it was NOT to piss the eco nutters off!!!).🤣🤣

FREE! it cost me £87.00's worth of parts all the work I did myself and got a car on the road and all legal (Except for the rear wing that flapped a bit and I got pulled over for low flying) Me and my mates (Some called it the 'Mystery Machine' as they couldn't work out how it still ran) went everywhere in that car and it never let me down. The real and happy days of motoring.... BANGERNOMICS RULE!

I live in the US. Been here 23 years. Originally from Canada.
I own a GMC 3500 Denali Diesel - which I’m selling because it’s more truck than I need. It has a range of 500+ miles. Fills up in a few minutes.
I also own a ‘76 Corvette, which is in my shop needing me to finish installing new bits.
I bought a Chevy Bolt - I have a home charger hardwired so I can charge quickly (relative term) - I use it for commuting to work and back and puttering about town.
I am bored of it already.
Thinking of a 2014 ish Mercedes E350 sedan. Something with a soul.
The EV is fine for purpose I suppose, but I don’t feel comfortable driving it to the next large city (82 miles away) to go to Costco because I don’t want to spend an additional hour there charging my car. I did the trip once and had about 40 miles left (I added 12 miles by charging at a slow charger to experiment while there).
Nothing like having the peace of mind in my fuel vehicles of a 500 mile range, refill anywhere in less than 5 mins with no need to use an app.

Geoff - something just occurred to me regarding the sad demise of the Fiesta. The trouble for Ford is that a small, good, light, fun little car at sensible prices will deflect people from buying their EVs.
So, think about this as a stepping stone. Swap it for the Puma. Slightly bigger, higher, heavier, chunkier, less pretty, and a bit more exensive. Convince existing customer base to live with this instead. This moves the customer base slightly closer to what EVs look like.
Its a step by step approach. Once in the Puma they will be slightly more removed from wanting a vehicle that looks good, accepting its as pretty as a fridge. They will get used to being in a bigger heavier vehicle and spending more. Hence they will be in a closer mental mindset when the next round comes by and Ford tell them that the puma only comes in an EV format now.

The only major problem with leasing a car, is the epidemic of number plate cloning. A leased car is not in your name, the V5 is with the leasing company. So, if your plate is cloned the fines and tickets etc will go to the leasing company, who will then pass them onto you at their leisure. You do not have the option to change the number plate to stop any more fines coming your way, whilst you sort out those you already have, so they will just keep coming. The lease company will not bust their nuts to help you.

Looked at a few EV's on ebay but first thing I look at is age. If it's four years old you have to assume a potential six year battery life, down to four years at resale two years later and that isn't going to help the sale. It's almost like buying a leasehold property on short lease.

Current: Have an EV company car, but not renewing it in October. Talked to you on X about it, a Hyundai Ioniq.
Looking for: I want a diesel, 40mpg+. I like estates or 4x4s, though would be nice to have something a little sporty.
Cars I've had I liked: Jeep Patriot, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Alfa 145, Dodge Charger, Renault Mégane Estate, and Chrysler Voyager. Had most of these pre kids. Towbar would be useful for bike rack.

So we bought our first new car in 2008 a VW Polo Match for 11K adjusted for inflation that is £17400 now. The Match wasn't a base model and the cheapest Polo now is around £22K or for a higher spec like we had nearer £23K. New cars full of tech crap we don't want and they have even removed the buttons unsurprisingly we cant afford new cars.

I am reliant on public transport. I can drive. Convid removed my credit score so I can't obtain finance. If I was able to save enough for a used car or had that in the bank there's NO WAY I would buy a car to get me to work. All the decent paid jobs are unreachable for me by public transport. I'm confined to base and I'm certainly not going to spend 3 to 4 hours commuting just to earn the extra to buy a car that's going to be banned within a decade.

The price of a used car in my area is almost as much as a new car that no one has neglected or abused, so we bought ourselves a new ice Corolla that will last for many many years. It was cheap to buy and it's cheap to fuel, cheap to insure and as the world's best selling ice car, parts are plentiful and cheap and our transportation needs are taken care of for decades to come. I'm afraid the electric dream is going to have to wait.
