  • Fishing for squid Marion Bay Jetty - jetty squidding. We had heard that Marion Bay Jetty was a great place for fishing for squid, especially in winter. So we headed off to try our luck at squidding on a cold winter's morning and the Marion Bay Jetty didn't disappoint. Although the squid we landed we not huge by Marion Bay standards, they were the biggest we had ever caught!
    We started squidding using squid jigs on handlines, hanging below a float. These were hard to cast out any great distance and kept floating towards the jetty. So we attached our float rig to our fishing rods, and were able to easily cast them out much deeper. We also switched to whole salted pilchards threaded onto the jigs. Small Australian Herring are good bait too. I used my favourite squid jig as well - a blue jig that rattles, but it did not bring me any luck.
    Martin caught the first squid of the morning off Marion Bay Jetty almost as soon as we started fishing. He caught that on a handline with a white squid jig suspended from a float.
    Then it was my turn. I caught a fantastic squid using a whole salted pilchard on a squid jig suspended from a float, using my fishing rod. I had cast the jig out and was retrieving it at a steady pace when the squid grabbed it. I thought I was stuck in the weeds because it was not moving, but soon realised it was actually a squid!
    Martin threw a crab net in, and I floated the squid over the top of the net. He then pulled the crab net out of the water and brought the squid up onto the jetty with ease. What a great squidding trick! I was so excited about catching the squid that I forgot to measure it!
    We headed back to the caravan park for a while then returned before sunset, to see if we could catch another big one. There was not a lot happening but then Martin pulled in a very nice squid. This one we did measure, and it had a 32cm hood. Martin caught that using his rod, with a whole pilchard squid jig on a float.
    We had the best crumbed calamari recipe, so we fried up the squid rings using flour, egg and PANKO bread crumbs which are the best for crumbing calamari rings. So we had a great dinner ...they were just delicious. What a fantastic day! You can buy squid jigs and hand lines in the Marion Bay general store.

      @fishingsister  Рік тому

      We find it's good to have a couple of hand lines on a jetty. We call them "lazy squids" because there is no effort. It's easier than carrying rods and they are easy to use off a jetty👍

    Once when we fished at Marion Bay the squid were umping out of the water trying to swallow our floats, they were huge and we caught about 12 in a day. Must really get back down there one day.

    I use kiwi fruit to tenderise meat like steak etc. Green kiwifruit contains a natural enzyme called Actindin that breaks down protien makes it tender and soft.

      Thank you for that explanation. I will add it to my notes. I never thought of steak, but it does make sense. I'll give it a go👍

  • @kevinaldred5303

    Why don't you eat the tentacles... they are really the best part ... keep the tendrils for bait the rest you eat flaps and all ... keep the heads for crab bait and nothing is wasted

    • @fishingsister
      @fishingsister  Рік тому

      Good question....we normally would eat the tentacles but as you can see we had way too much squid for dinner and we did not have much bait for the next couple of days. So we used some for bait.
