@@theincredibleshrunkenbeegu7084 7.27.24. Caudill Subject: Fwd: The Gun is Civilization by Maj. L. Caudill USMC (Ret)
No doubt where this Retired Marine stands on the 2d amendment
      "The Gun Is Civilization"
As the Supreme Court hears arguments for and against the Chicago , IL Gun Ban, I offer you another stellar example of a letter
(written by a Marine) that places the proper perspective on what a gun means to a civilized society.
Read this eloquent and profound letter and pay close attention to the last paragraph of the letter...
The Gun is Civilization by Maj. L. Caudill USMC (Ret)
Human beings only have two ways to deal with one another: reason and force. If you want me to do something for you, you have a choice of either convincing me via argument, or force me to do your bidding under threat of force. Every human interaction falls into one of those two categories, without exception. Reason or force, that's it.
In a truly moral and civilized society, people exclusively interact through persuasion. Force has no place as a valid method of social interaction, and the only thing that removes force from the menu is the personal firearm, as paradoxical as it may sound to some.
When I carry a gun, you cannot deal with me by force. You have to use reason and try to persuade me, because I have a way to negate your threat or employment of force.
The gun is the only personal weapon that puts a 100-pound woman on equal footing with a 220-pound mugger, a 75-year old retiree on equal footing with a 19-year old gang banger, and a single guy on equal footing with a carload of drunk guys with baseball bats. The gun removes the disparity in physical strength, size, or numbers between a potential attacker and a defender.
There are plenty of people who consider the gun as the source of bad force equations. These are the people who think that we'd be more civilized if all guns were removed from society, because a firearm makes it easier for a [armed] mugger to do his job. That, of course, is only true if the mugger's potential victims are mostly disarmed either by choice or by legislative fiat--it has no validity when most of a mugger's potential marks are armed.
People who argue for the banning of arms ask for automatic rule by the young, the strong, and the many, and that's the exact opposite of a civilized society. A mugger, even an armed one, can only make a successful living in a society where the state has granted him a force monopoly.
Then there's the argument that the gun makes confrontations lethal that otherwise would only result in injury. This argument is fallacious in several ways. Without guns involved, confrontations are won by the physically superior party inflicting overwhelming injury on the loser. People who think that fists, bats, sticks, or stones don't constitute lethal force watch too much TV, where people take beatings and come out of it with a bloody lip at worst. The fact that the gun makes lethal force easier works solely in favor of the weaker defender, not the stronger attacker. If both are armed, the field is level.
The gun is the only weapon that's as lethal in the hands of an octogenarian as it is in the hands of a weight lifter. It simply wouldn't work as well as a force equalizer if it wasn't both lethal and easily employable.
When I carry a gun, I don't do so because I am looking for a fight, but because I'm looking to be left alone. The gun at my side means that I cannot be forced, only persuaded. I don't carry it because I'm afraid, but because it enables me to be unafraid. It doesn't limit the actions of those who would interact with me through reason, only the actions of those who would do so by force. It removes force from the equation... and that's why carrying a gun is a civilized act.
By Maj. L. Caudill USMC (Ret)
So the greatest civilization is one where all citizens are equally armed and can only be persuaded, never forced. ❗️👍🏼

I issued myself a concealed carry permit on my own recognizance and started trying buy extra ammo, every store in Los Angeles county and San Bernardino county were forbidden from selling any. Lucky for me I worked in Orange county and stocked up the next day. Nobody was going to pull me out of my car.

I lived in Massachusetts until I was 27. I'd seen cars burned, bottles thrown, shots fired. The thing I learned was to become invisible and slide out of the way.I've seen the crush at the door of concerts. I don't go to concerts, ball games, political rallies, movies, city music festivals. I don't miss it. I have a full life. I'd always rather be fishing, walking the dog or working in the garden anyway.
I walk my dog daily, 20 miles a week. I have a small pack with water, some first aid stuff, a poncho and a flashlight.I also carry a sidearm, a pocket knife and a kubotan. I'm known by many in town, welcome in some business, the police station and city hall. If this town has a riot, looting or similar, the rest of America has already fallen.

People were on my car, threatening me verbally through my windows and the guy on my hood had a club. "YOU aren't going ANYWHERE!" he yelled, pointing his club at me and striking my hood. This is a day pack, its not supposed to sustain me for 3 days like a normal bug out bag but its something I can get out of my car with and strap to my chest and run if I had to abandon my vehicle. Things i carry on my person: 2 knives, 1 multitool, a pistol, OC spray, good shoes, and dress for weather. (Edit: oh yes and a P-38 can opener)

I build several kits with them and can wear them on my belt in a “get home” emergency. Shoes - usually some kind of steel or reinforced toe sneakers or boots so if I have to kick my way through something it's going to give before I do. I've never been in a riot - mainly because I don't go to places when they've kicked off very much and I stay aware of 'protests' and the like so I can avoid them. I moved into a large city in my late 20's and the first thing I read about in the local paper of my new location was all the car jackings happening and about a woman who was murdered for her car just a mile from where I had chosen to move into. That woke my situational awareness right up and I've been more or less on constant awareness when I'm out and about as well as pretty in tune with what's normal around my home and key onto when things are feeling right in the neighborhood. I pay attention when I pull into a convenience store or gas station to how things appear and if the clerk is looking nervous through the glass and avoided a getting caught up in a couple armed robberies that way.

To be otherwise is a learned behaviour that is bolstered by group-think and other factors. Most folks want to go along to get along. STUPID folks (using Bonhoeffer's and Cipolla's definition) are short-sighted by nature and can only see what's in front of them, which is sadly our stuff and our well-being many a times. Stupidity is easily roused, much like aphids on a green shoot. You poke one, and the entire cluster of aphids will begin to jump. It is instantaneous and very much dangerous for the rest of us. As a VIETNAM Vet I've always been pretty "paranoid" as some call it. But this year it seems like hell itself has been loosed. And every day watching Utube it seems to increase more! Thankfully at 77 I'm still healthy and able to run, etc. In 21 we moved to Arkansas where there are no restrictions on Constitutional carry, so I am ALWAYS STRAPPED. from time I get dressed, to going to bed. Doesn't seem to be much craziness here , like everywhere else so far, but that can change like the shooting South of Little Rock 5-6 weeks ago, and to my surprise, NO ONE at that store had a anything for their protection so people died. There is NO EXCUSE for that in this state but laziness!

We had State P.D., Country P.D., & local P.D., with some times 4 K 9's on the scene quickly. The Energy,.chaos, mayhem was incredible! Praise the K 9's for settling any disturbance in minutes ! The background on the vid is not how I remember the streets of LA. More like the White Mtns. of Az. As a teenager, just 15, went from E.LA to Watts in 1965with my dad to try & rescue my 18 yr old aunt coming home from work & caught in the epicenter of the riot. Got shot at, bricks thrown & Molotov Cocktails tossed at my dads truck. Could not reach her but my 1st Riot experience. Her car club friends got her out safely. A year later the Sunset Strip Riots. Advance a few years & drafted in the US Army. Good guerrilla warfare training given the era. Fast forward to 1992, no longer in Ca. but Ex wife visiting in LA with my daughters, haul’d @$$ to LA to make sure they went home to N. Ca. Yes, riots & people unpredictable….just my 2 cents b4 inflation on some real observations being there. Stay safe.

I would add (for those who are able): maintain your physical fitness to a point where you could run/sprint at least a half mile if you needed to. This level of fitness could also help you to assist your family, elderly/disabled folks, etc. Wearing appropriate shoes and clothing will absolutely help in this regard.

I was on a CTA (Chicago Transit Authority) bus during the 1968 Democrate convention. The bus was parked waiting to leave the bus stop. In moments it was surounded by a mob and police. Driver had to wait for the melee to disperse. As violent and bloody as it was, mild compared to what has happened recently.

Reminds of my experience in high school. We had a race riot. I turned corner in the halls a wave of 75-100 rioters moved down the hallway in a dead run. Anyone in the way was battered and let bloody. I was lucky and side stepped the crowd darting into the cafeteria. My respite was brief as a group crossed the cafeteria headed straight for me. One had a laser focus on me and as he approached I grabbed a fiberglass chair and with mighty swing clocked him in the face. It took all the steam out of his assault. I went out the nearest door on the opposite side of the cafeteria and headed for the nearest exit to the outside. There was no standing my ground as I was opposed by 20 to my 1. The rampage continued on for a good 30-40 minutes. From that time on I kept my head on a swivel looking for a repeat occurrence in all public spaces. When I do hear of trouble brewing downtown or elsewhere else I stay away from getting in the middle of it even if I’m just gawking.

All of this is true, but I would expand on it to say that this is all true for every single day you are alive. A moment can change an entire life, whether there is a riot or not. A single enraged man, whose anger comes from what we dont know (we never know what someone else has going on in their mind and life), can pull a gun and. fire a single bullet that can forever change or even end your life. U should always always always be aware of your surroundings, and you should never let ANYONE get within 20 feet of you before you see them coming and have a chance to evaluate their intentions. If you go to a concert with your wife, you can certainly enjoy the music but your responsibility, as a man, should be maintaining a secured and safe perimeter fror her and perhaps your family members/friends. Someone has to sacrifice their enjoyment for the security and safety of the group, and as a man or father, that should be you. It’s the main rule of life, ALWAYS PROTECT YOURSELF (and your loved ones).

@@411Outdoors If you weren't there, then don't comment on it. Police kicked off the violence every night in Portland, and were targeting journalists. If you give a shit about free speech you'd understand why people like me were out there. FBI has admitted they had agents in the riots, and they were easy to spot. They, and other agents provocateurs who weren't protestors did a lot of property damage, seeing that they had a free run at it. DHS was kidnapping people off of the streets, a clear violation of the Constitution if you give a shit about that. Don't comment on things you know nothing about, didn't experience except through watching TV, or have a bias that prevents you from admitting things to yourself that your ego and identity can't handle. If you think it was a bunch of violent people funded by billionaires doing the rioting, you'd be correct. But it wasn't the protestors starting shit every night, it was the police and MARSOC.
