I'm 75 and in the last 10 yrs here in ;I've been robbed, mugged and hammered to the ground! Left fl a d moved back! Robbed on my bike! The police caught him! 14 yrs old! Yes in daylight ! My 55 plus is not safe either! Kids chase us in our gated pool area with fists! The police use the race card and tell .e everything has changed and the kids get away with everything! What! So unless you get really hurt no help! The hoa board says we can't afford security! Our society's in trouble! The elderly aren't safe a d no consequences for the kids and thugs! Im trained and run bike etc! More fit than alot of the kids these days! I was safe as a kid in my factory town! Now it's a crime area! God help us all!Great video!

411, it's me again an old man who is a Defensive Tactic Expert. Being an elderly man with a lot of street experience as a retired police officer I think you have done a good job at making people think about their surroundings. One thing I've learned from being a teacher of survival tactics is there is always someone better, faster and younger. It only takes one mistake for things to go the wrong way. I was at a Defensive Tactics Training Simonar in St. Louis Mo, back in the late 80's taking a knife defense course and in the class were several Navy Seals and some SF kids. I say kids because they were so damn young and excited about their jobs. During the demonstration some of the soldiers complained about not going far enough to go for a kill. Having over twelve years experience in Aikido at that time I offered to show them a more lethal move. I explained since the carpeting had very little backing the throw may be a little hard. After demonstrating an outward wrist twist into a knife removal and taking the knife down the victims arm to the back of the skull the soldiers immediately began tossing each other around as young men can. The more they practiced the take down I realized how professional they were and hoped I would never have to confront them on the street. I think knowing where you are going watching your surrounding is very important. Being a Federal Conceal Carry permit holder has its advantages since I carry a handgun and knife at all times. I also use a cane while I'm out running errands. I've been involved in several shooting and know the consequences of my actions. I think what most people don't realize is the bad people come at you when your back is to them and they never give you a break. Our society has changed and it is much more dangerous especially for the elderly. I loved being a police officer, but I kept getting older and the bad guys always got younger.
    Be Careful Out There!

What I’m afraid of is making the assailant more angry by hurting them and then they attack me more viciously. If I could run it wouldn’t scare me as much. These days the person could kill me and not get in any trouble for it but if I defend myself, because I can carry, I’ll go to jail, like Daniel Penny.

My Dad taught me how to carry myself when I was young. That alone has served me well throughout my entire life, and continues to do so at 67. If we walk down the street like we are victims, by our posture, our stride, and our general body language and facial expression, we may become victims. Trouble makers pick up on that in seconds. It also doesn't hurt to have a few rudimentary skills and a bulldog attitude when it is necessary.

I knew an elderly gentleman several years ago. He was attacked by a young thug. He knocked the punk out. When I asked him about the incident he explained to me that he had learned "tricks" from his father. It seems his father had served in WW2 with a special unit. From what he showed it was edge of hands blows, low line kicks (almost stomps), and palm strikes. It interested me enough that I began deep research on WW2 combatives. They are NOT a martial art, but a VERY quick to learn system. Practice in WW2 combatives, cane, and firearms would help health and go a long way towards safety. Just my random thoughts.

Awareness is key, especially for the elderly. Going to the ATM? I recently saw a woman in her 70s look at the ATM machine without ever glancing around. She did two or three transactions, at the end getting cash. She never - NOT ONCE - looked up, and carried the cash away in her hand. I apologized and suggested to her that she keep her focus on her surroundings, not the cash. I showed her the mirror at the ATM, and explained why it was there. Finally, I told her to always put the cash away at the machine, and then walk briskly to the car and get in and LOCK THE DOORS. So much of self defense is situational awareness……

Sir, I'm 76 years old and have had martial arts training in the years past. For my age, I'm not in bad shape but I will say this. Never, never, never let a potential opponent get close enough to grab ahold of you. Bad things will happen. It seems that you are giving advice to aged and possibly infirm folks that will be destroyed by a mugger if they let them get close enough. Younger and stronger perps reflexes are faster, and their strength is far superior; so your advice on getting a firearm along with training is going to be the best equalizer for the senior citizen. A cane or walking stick can be used but be advised that if they are taken away from you, they are gonna be used against you. Do not let any questionable people get close! Be aware of your surroundings!!!! Stay safe. Thanks for putting the videos out there for all the folks. Oh yeah; one thing I almost forgot; advice for guys and girls with bad intentions. Be very careful when targeting old men and women. A young person will likely run away if they can. We cannot. With older folks; many of us have former military training and will kill you if threatened with great bodily harm or death. Just advice for the wise.

Something about him must have given her pause & as he approached she said stop right there (distance) and put her hand in her conceal carry purse. It must have been obvious she had a weapon bc she said he immediately turned and left. She told me she practiced this scenario at home and used the range often to stay competent. I was impressed and immediately bought a conceal purse after meeting her.

This is problematic. Threatening a firearm, or any other weapon for that matter, without A.) Actually having one and B.) Bring ready and able to use it without hesitation can get you killed. You'd feel pretty silly reaching into an empty purse, pocket or waistband and having the bad guy pull a real weapon and use it. Too many ne'er-do-wells are armed these days to risk a game of "guess what I've got".

I always enjoy your informative videos. Thanks. I am 73 years old. The cane is a "medical device" that can be taken anywhere. Airplanes, courtrooms etc. Gary Hernandez has a great channel dealing with instructing about canes. A flashlight with a crenulated bezel is a devastating weapon. The Zebra F-701 is a stainless steel pen
(including the ink refill) that is a favorite among preppers. Abouut $8. Thanks again.

Older, with disability, two canes (one a Cane Masters), and other equalization devices. We live in a time where society no longer respects or values the elder or life in general. Many young people are self focused, self interested, and self absorbed with a view on the elder as a target to prey upon. First and foremost, be aware; second nothing good happens at 0 dark thirty; so be aware and don’t be stupid. But if evil comes to you and you can’t escape be prepared to do what is necessary with a view toward life and rationality. Thank you for the sage advice and reminders.

One thing I want to touch on is that people can use the buddy system when possible. When you are in a group you are less vulnerable and not easy pickings for a cowardly aggressor. I know it's not possible for some to have a friend or two coming along on a outing but people have similar needs so find a friend or two to join you in grocery shopping and all of y'all can go to the store together for the same reason and it's a lot more fun 😊 too.

      Great video, just Great!
The only thing that I might add is to think about getting a dog.
My personal pick is an Eskimo spitz; the American Spitz is a little smaller.
      I love the breed.
I wanted a dog that would be protective but not aggressive.
This is the one that fit the bill for me.
Whether it's a small dog, medium, or large, many attackers will back off and pick on someone else rather than tackle someone with a dog.
They aren't called man's best friend for nothing, especially if you are a woman. :)
May God Bless you richly. There is no telling how many people that you have helped or will help until Heaven .

Thank You both videos are great!!!! I am a fitness professional who teaches older adults.. we work on strength, endurance, stability, balance and fall prevention. I encourage everyone to do those things. Falls kill more seniors than any other disease or ailment. If your balance isn’t great, work on it. You can probably find videos to help you if a class is not available in your area. I carry bear mace when I walk my dog. We have coyotes and if I were to run into someone that had bad intentions, the spray goes about 25 feet so it buys me time and distance. I am not looking to let someone get close enough to be in striking distance. I walk in a commercial area and I make friends with the other walkers and employees of the commercial establishment. I make friends at all the places I go. You would be surprised how people look for you and watch out for you when you do that. The other thing I want to say is you can use the physiology of the body to your advantage. Adrenaline is very powerful and you will surprise yourself, but you can really only fight for your life for about 2 minutes on the average, but I never underestimate my seniors. They have my respect.

We seldom go out after dark and most of our travels are to the grocery store, doctor or out to lunch w/friends. Your videos are a good reminder to be keenly aware of my surroundings all the time. • @tominmo8865
    @tominmo8865 6 місяців тому +18

First video of yours I've watched. Very well presented.
    1. As you said, avoidance is key. Head on a swivel, game face on (don't look like a victim). Stay out of sketchy areas. Cross the street or retreat to avoid a group of people who don't look right. If possible, don't be alone when out walking, shopping, etc. This complicates things for the predators, and they will be less likely to select a pair of people. Another part of avoidance is being able to calm down an angry person, prevent escalation.
    2. Do enough exercise to be limber and able to move well (if possible). If you are frozen up, it doesn't matter how many black belts you have.
    3. Having any equalizer implies that you can move well enough to use it effectively. If you need a cane for mobility, you should probably have a fire arm. Same with a knife. If I am a predator wearing a coat and gloves, ideally leather, I am not worried about a feeble old geezer with a knife.
    4. Personally, I only want two weapons. Either a fire arm for an extreme situation I couldn't avoid, or a thin steel rod about 12" long. Ideal is a 1/4" drive socket extension, which does come in a 12" length. Use it for shins, the head and fists. A tool to keep him at distance. Otherwise I prefer no weapon at all.
    5. Because surprise is the best advantage, consider acting weaker than you are. This is if you think getting physical is unavoidable. Program him to be overconfident, then attack. Takes the fight out of a lot of guys.
    6. If you have a fire arm, have it in your hand (still in the pocket or holster) or quick to pull out as soon as you perceive danger. Even get it out early. Let him know what awaits him. This is also avoidance, on the extreme end.
BTW I am 74, and would give most young guys a hard time.

My wife and I are both in wheelchairs. At home she uses crutches and I use a Walker. I’m 68 and she’s 65. We can’t outrun an attacker even in powerchairs and my arm strength has been on the downturn thanks to nerve damage. If I get hit right in the neck I could end up a quadrapallegic especially since i dodged that bullet already years ago. I carry because we have already come across people who don’t like disabled people. We used to have a couple of very protective large dogs who were with us. Problem solved. Our current dog is large but not aggressive. In these days of increased homelessness, increased use of highly addictive drugs and road rage incidents on the increase the chances of meeting less than friendly people is also increased. I am aware of things around us and if something doesn’t feel right, we’re oughta there. It is definitely a more dangerous world out there and that has nothing to do with the number of guns in this country. Guns make life safer for a lot of people. Like they say though : “I’d rather be tried by 12 than carried by 6”.

I'm 63 and retired law enforcement. It is much easier to be proactive and avoid being a victim than it is to have to fight someone. 10 years ago I was working in a county jail where I had to be in shape and able to go hands on if needed. At 63, I DO NOT want to go hands on with anyone. So thank you for teaching folks how to avoid getting into the situation first. It's my opinion, if you are in a situation where you have to go hands on, you are actually in survival mode. And that may have nothing to do with trying to overpower someone physically.

Part 2 was my 1st exposure to your channel. After watching it's 1st few minutes I hunted Part 1 and watched it before Part 1. You did teach important concepts in Part 1.
I watched Part 2 and found myself knowing that if I'm tricked into allowing anyone to get close enough for me to need to tell them, "Back up" It's time for me to think I might need to exercise my 2nd amendment right. That's because I keep my head on a swivel and avoid even an elbow brush proximity. I also avoid going near a group of people standing idle and near each other "visiting". Plus if I see some one or a group migrating toward me I make a move to migrate away from them and watch how they react. When shopping I leave at least 10 parking spaces between my vehicle and other vehicles. That allows me to scan the parking lot while going both ways. I'm not paranoid but I'm aware of and am prepared for today's atmosphere. I can and do avoid going to places where "macho" is flaunted as regular behavior.
I'd much rather avoid such a fight than to win such a fight. I don't want to need to spend as much time as required with LEOs following 2nd amendment exercise. And I prefer t spend my resources on activities I deem more enjoyable than on answering questions from $500.00 an hour lawyers.
I see no need for you to apologise for your teaching. IF people think they need different or additional techniques my thoughts are they found your channel all by themselves, I bet they can find those other types of "tips" they want all by themselves, too.

To all your critics, I would like to say that all their crying and moaning does NOTHING to help us old folks to retain some hope for life. I live in South Africa, where every walk to the corner store is a journey speckled with murderers and thieves openly threatening us. My trusty .38Spl is always with me, but as the years progress, I realize that I might not be quick enough to draw and shoot. Avoiding conflict is uppermost in my mind these days. Information such as this in today's society is so very important. Especially for us vulnerable seniors. Previously our world was so much safer. And people didn't face what's become common dangers that they do today, that threaten our personal safety.
I have aged being in a ready mindset. But I see so many seniors younger than I that are walking victims. It's really difficult here in Canada to be in a prepared state of readiness. Because you are NOT allowed to carry anything for the purpose of self defense. That's why there are typically so many victims that don't do well when attacked. Both young and old alike come out on the losing end.
There are shootings and stabbings daily in our big cities. It's not so bad further out of those city environments. But in the past couple of years since the COVID, things have clearly deteriorated.
So to actually increase your level of survival, that Situational Awareness Factor that you talk about. Becomes extremely important with what we have to work with legally. Other than that to protect yourself or any Loved one that's with you. You are forced to violate the Law the same as the criminal you may be facing.
I would recommend that people carry with them whatever it is they feel comfortable with and can effectively use. Even though it may violate the Law. The only person responsible for your safety is you. Carry what you will that increases your ability to survive any street level altercation. You owe it to yourself and your family to live.
If you are unable to use a knife against another Human Being. Then don't opt for that. Choose something non-lethal like Pepper Spray. We can buy that here because they sell it for protection against nasty neighborhood Dogs.
I look forward to picking up whatever knowledge and techniques I can when it comes to having to venture out in a dangerous world. Thanks for addressing this important area of concern for seniors.

Most important lesson is don't put yourself in a fight if you can help it. Remember there is no such thing as a tough guy. Only the dead and ones that got lucky. Walking away from a fight is probably the hardest and smartest thing you can do.

Great and inteligent presentation! Forget the downers! It seems that being outspoken and criticizing enhances the "armchair warriors" egos. I'm 81, vietnam vet, trained in judo, kung fu, boxing, and more and I still seek to prepare myself for my family and others! I appreciate your expertise and forgiving demeanor!

I wrote this in your 1st presentation & I wanted to say again in this presentation... I'm 73, spent 6 yrs Army Res during the Nam War. I can handle most weapons, because I've shot them all. So why do I have a 20 round mini mag, .22LR laser pistol & a 20 ga. pump action shotgun for home protection?... Because my petite, 5'1" wife can handle both those weapons easily... with me... You'll look like swiss cheese when I'm done with you. And I open carry a 50 cal. non-lethal, 10 round, tear-gas pistol and a 7" blade hunting knife when I road travel on vacation... I have never had a problem, and pray I never do... Thank you, you are a blessing... Don't listen to those trolls & armchair brainiacs🇺🇸

      At home…the pump shotgun…or my 1911…which I also carry

Those three tips in the first video are the top three. Health, awareness, weapon. The assault you avoid is the assault walk away from.
Second thing, violence from domestic partners and children. Get out of those situations. What I have read is half of assaults on the elderly are from family.
For the younger viewers looking out for a parent, I say "you will probably be this old some day." And I am speaking to you. There are other things that can be done to reduce probabilities of being assaulted. Get out of urbanized areas. Stay healthier than your peers. This will require sacrifices over the years. It is easier to stay fit and active than to get fit and active after retiring. There may be financial sacrifices of living like a peasant. You may never go on a cruise. Invest wisely starting young. If you make these sacrifices and live in a quiet small town when you are old the chances of assault go way down.

    Seniors need tips !
We are retired and traveling Latin America for years. We both do strength training and stay as jacked as possible at 56 and 61. Our number one goal is not looking like an easy target, and at least at this point we don’t.
    Seniors….stay jacked !

Keep doing what you do. Listening to your positive and calm attitude offers the best advice. Watching dramatized action and technique may be helpful, but you stress the mindset and mentation, which is something anyone can do. And I think that's the most important part of self-defense and not being a victim. Cheers!
