This was a nice touch they added in the live action series. Zuko's crew was the division that he stood up for. He saved their lives. It helped show the lieutenant and all the others how lucky they were and what Zuko was really like. They owe him a lot.
Zuko was one of the best anti-villainous characters in the Avatar franchise. Even though he was arrogant and selfish at the start of the series, he used to have a lot of kindness and compassion even when he was a prince. He stood up for the 41st Division against the generals and his father and though he fought so hard to regain his honor and his father’s love, one person is not enough. He received lots of respect from the crew (especially Lieutenant Jee) after they found out that he sacrificed his face and shoulder just to save their entire bodies. Iroh told them that they were all alive because of what Zuko did. I hope in Season 2, Zuko will shed whatever villainous parts and pain he had and became more kinder and friendlier.
