I see Toph being a cop as interesting character development. Not only does she take a 180 on her original belief on authority, but she even takes a 360. She hates authority, becomes a cop to improve it, realizes the system the sucks, hates authority again with a more educated stance. Character development isn't always linear, and isn't always on screen

It’s interesting but it definitely would’ve been more interesting to know why but I think what actually bothers me about it is that when she does appear in LOK’s present she’s now gone back to being a loner and hating authority. So he character did a very weird zig zag zig arc entirely off screen. Not at all the biggest flaw, but worth mentioning.

In my opinion season 2 is Lok's Last Jedi moment. Because it basically just served to take a massive dump on the original material and everything that people liked about it.
Mystical spirit lore? Who cares! Just make them all transparent walking vegetables that turn into evil versions of themselves whenever the evil carpet is around.
When humans were first learning to bend, they had to learn their lessons from nature, and the world around them. They could only do it by being humble, keeping an open mind, and forming a deep connection with nature and the world around them. NOPE! Scratch that. Humans actually used to rent bending from lion turtles, until this one guy decided that he didn't want to return his rental. So he kept it.
One of my favourite parts of ATLA was how ambiguous the Avatar is. We don't really know anything about who the Avatar is or where it came from, which made the concept of the Avatar so much more interesting. Wait nevermind guys! Remember that random guy who wouldn't return his rental? That guy can't go home anymore because of the whole rental debacle. So proceeded to go fuck around in the forest for a little while, until he stumbles upon good and evil having a fight. In his infinite wisdom he breaks the fight up the, which apparently puts the world in danger of "*TEN THOUSAND YEARS OF DARKNESS™*". So this guy and the good carpet merge, and then have a fight with the evil carpet. The good carpet+random guy with stolen bending wins, thus creating the first Avatar.
Remember how in ATLA Aang being able to contact Roku and his other past lives for advice was a pretty central theme and quite common place? Forget it! The evil red carpet with the help of Unalaq rebrand themselves as the "*DARK AVATAR™*", then Korra gets the living shit beat out of her so badly it gets rid of all the other Avatars in the cycle. The obvious next move here is to meditate in a tree. Korra meditates so hard she becomes giagantic and blue. Then has a laser fight with Unavatu, and almost gets the shit beamed out of her, but Jinora saves the day. Then, after some contemplation, the writers decide everything has come full circle, so Korra opens the spirit portals so that the walking vegetables and humans can live together.

They were monks and that's how they lived so I don't think he really though much of it and besides didn't Gyatso practically raise him? And didn't he already know what parents playing favorites could do to their children from what happened to Zuko and Azula?! AND would Katara stand for that shit had it really happened?! The evidence that this doesn't make sence are endless and I could go on forever. I mean in one of the comics some crazy lady started encouraging benders to attack non-benders and through that story Aang protects non-benders until the end. Would you reckon that same person would neglect his non-bender child years later?!

Zuko's finnaly good now, wich i know they gave some exposition but we really didn't see it coming after he betrayed his uncle. But in korra's case, the way she gets her powers back is kinda lazy, and they couldve done something better. Not like ATLA exactly, but use similar principals to atleast shock the audience. Something that bothers about Aang being a "bad father" is how implied it is that Aang was _disappointed_ at the fact Bumi didn't bend at all. I call bullshit.
Aang and Katara. _Aang_ and _Katara._ Two people close to SOKKA _AND_ SUKI. THERE'S NO WAY THEY WOULD'VE ACTUALLY CARED IF THEIR SON DIDN'T BEND.
    My headcanon is:
Aang didn't put his attention in Tenzin on purpose,it was the excitement about that small gleam of hope to recover the Air Nomads.
Aang never minded Bumi being a non-bender,he told lots of stories about Sokka and Suki and all the awesome non-benders out there.
It wasn't Aang. It was *society.* Imagine being a kid, imagine hearing tons and tons and TONS of stories about your father the Avatar who saved the world when he was 13 years,on top of that your mother is a healer,Waterbender master _and_ bloodbender. That thing will get to you, that will make you feel bad, cause it isn't your parents's fault but you do live in their shadow, sadly.

You didn’t understand it at all. Aang was flawed from the very first season, I agree. But what they did in Korra actually served to show a lot. From a thematic perspective, it makes sense. Aang has always been afraid since the air nomad culture was lost, but he loved Katara, otherwise he would have married a nonbender and had MANY kids. He wanted kids in order to mainly rebuild the air nation, so to have his FIRSTBORN come out a non-bender must have been disappointing , then Kya comes out a WATERBENDER, right now Aang knows he does not have much time left and still no air bender, and then there’s Tenzin, the one he’d been waiting for. All I’m saying is Aang never hated Bumi nor Kya, it’s just that he never gave them enough attention growing up, something Katara couldn’t mellow out. He was the Avatar, he had many duties, he did not completely ignore his family but he also didn’t make enough time for them, and when there was time, he’d dedicate it on Tenzin because rebuilding that culture was his biggest priority. Probably why Katara chose to be a stay at home mom. Heck, even Aang wrote a book of stories to Tenzin. So it does make sense that he wouldn’t be the perfect Avatar. Many children who grew up with Aang always thought he was the perfect character, or probably that his flaws are passable. I mean, who wouldn’t hide a letter to prevent losing all his friends? Or look for girl’s attention? But as an adult, you have to see the broader picture, he was just a kid then, now he’s an adult with a lot more responsibilities. He stopped the war, yes, but there was still more work to be done. All I’m saying is it makes sense that Aang would do this, given his nature from the previous series. While he was friends with non-benders, he didn’t explicitly hate or dislike his other children, he just didn’t give enough time with them and when told from a kid’s perspective, this can often come out as dislike. Aang just had other priorities. He was an adult, you didn’t expect him to remain a goofy lovable dork to the very end. ThatKs just unrealistic.

    • @josephcain9445

He had a religious order of non benders dedicated to nomad culture. Nomad culture is not just bending

The idea of love=overprotection of course came from her parents which basically locked her in her..... em.. what was it? House, state, mansion?? I dont remember but you get me xD
The thing is thats why toph chose to live freely going to earth bending matches as we see in the first episode that she appears in. Thats her way of freedom. By becoming a cop is the complete opposite, but yes as the video mentions, she was raised buy parents who were privileged, he witnessed the huge differences between social status and she witnessed the corruption of Ba sing se. The definition from Wikipedia: "A Mary Sue is a type of fictional character, usually a young woman, who is portrayed as unrealistically free of weaknesses."
How on earth can you look at Korra and say that she is unrealistically free of weaknesses? She has loads!
Korra's character challenges was NEVER about being able to bend Water, Earth, and Fire. In Book 1, it was her Airbending. In Book 2, it was about her Spirituality. In Book 3, it was about her responsibility begin a new Air Nation. In Book 4, it was about her conflict resolution skills. Her Water, Earth, and Firebending abilities don't help her resolve these conflicts at all - she has to grow and overcome different obstacles.
Hmm... sound familiar? Airbending, Spirituality, Air Nomad Culture, and Conflict Resolution. Aren't those... all of Aang's strengths that he began the original show with? And yet I don't see you complaining that Aang was a Mary Sue, because he began with all of these strengths.
Aang's weaknesses were his Water, Earth, and Firebending. Korra's weaknesses are Airbending, Spirituality, and Confict Resolution. An Avatar needs all six of these to be a good Avatar, and for some reason you see Aang beginning with three of them as OK but Korra beginning with three of them as bad.
TLOK has plenty of issues. Korra being a Mary Sue is just flat out not one of them.

@@lucasrobin2788 Yeah, she has weaknesses, BUT SHE NEVER HAS TO ACTUALLY DO ANYTHING TO EARN BACK HER ABILITIES OR GET OVER THOSE OBSTACLES. Literally everything is done for her or given to her, to her bending and the people around her. There is no reason why she is able to go into the spirit world, it's just given to her along with bending. Please give me one reason why she should have been able to go to the spirit world when she had 0 ability to meditate. She's impatient and hot headed, and apparently she doesn't need to change that behavior in any way to get those powers. It really cheapens Aang's journey into the Spirit world and what he nearly sacrificed to get the Avatar State.
Her personality isn't a weakness. It just makes her a terrible person. She constantly does horrible things and people around her give excuses an just allow her behavior to continue because a) shes the avatar and b) they're scared of her.
Bella Swan from Twilight had similar excuses. "she's not a mary sue, bella is clumsy! she's also brooding!" when those things just make her more appealing to the characters. Why do you think Korra fucks her entire friend group? Why do you think Tenzin just ignores Korra destroying 1000 bending equipment given to him by his father, the last of the airbenders? It doesn't matter if she has negative attributes if they don't actually effect how characters see her.
literally the only time I saw any of the characters disliking korra was when Mako was physically scared of her. Remember when they broke up but Korra conveniently lost her memory, and Mako was considering telling her they broke up? He was frightened of her. This gives me serious abuser vibes, her entire personality is toxic, but no one apparently cares. I will agree the last season was the best, because she actually went through some sort of personality change, but it just served to make her an even worse judge of character and incompetent.
I don't hate the whole show. I do like SOME things. But Korra herself is just the worst character they could have chosen to be the Avatar.
I would pay money to erase my memory of Korra. You probably think I'm being overdramatic but I watched TLOK 3 times, I liked it the first time, thought it was okay the second time, then the third I realized I hate Korra. And every time I think of ATLA, I'm always reminded of Korra now. I wish I never watched the show, honestly. I don't enjoy hating a character this much, truly, because I love the world of ATLA.

I've also seen arguments that since Aang WAS his culture at the time, having an airbender child meant he had to impart all his culture to his son. In doing so, he may have alienated Kya and Bumi because he was so intent on preserving Air Nomad culture. It's hard to balance your three children when you have to be a "normal parent" to 2 of them and a cultural instructor (but like, the ENTIRE culture) to another one. Just in explaining the customs he would have to spend more time with Tenzin, and of course their connection through airbending itself would at least tempt Aang to prefer him. It may be that Aang simply isn't the greatest parent, but to those who want Aang to be a good father, there are potential "reasons" why his other two children felt neglected the way they did.

I don’t think he favourited Tenzin in the way we think. I think he loved his children equally but he had the duty of passing what’s left of the air nomad traditions. Had he not done that, a whole culture would’ve been forgotten and Tenzin wouldn’t have been able to teach the new air benders (the ones from harmonic convergence) said culture. So I believe that he had to be with Tenzin and teach him these things the whole time, but unfortunately at the cost of neglecting his other children.

One of my biggest gripes with the show was the changes made to bending. In TLA mastery of an element seemed genuinely so difficult, in Korra it seems main characters are just naturally gifted or new skills just somehow come to them. Remember how hard it was for Aang to learn fire and especially earth. Meanwhile toddler korra is just casually bending all 4 elements in the first 5 minutes of the show. Fow me it makes the bending way less cool. Instead of an artform that takes mastery and concentration, it's like they are just casting magic spells.

She was hardly bending anything impressive in that scene of her as a child. They also live in peace time, so they can afford to learn each element easier than in Aang's time. Two of the main characters play in competitions so you best bet they are good at their element.

It was like there was no real connection because every time Korra went away Mako went to Asami, and when she came back she was all over Mako again and he just dropped Asami for her. I thought Korra and Mako breaking up was the best decision but what I don’t understand about it, Asami never got mad. She was dating Mako and Korra kissed him and they never truly acknowledged how badly that would hurt or how angry she should have been. LOK was all in all a decent if not a great show, ATLA just raised the bar too high. The problems that held LOK down would be the following:
1.) The lost connection to the past avatars - I hated this part soo much.
2.) Underwhelming ending - Kuvira wasn't as fleshed out.
3.) The giant mecha - They really decided that a Gundam robot would work out.
4.) Season 2's story - We didn't need the dark avatar.

Consider that in the final episode of Book 3 it is Asami who cares for Korra after she's paralyzed. Asami is the ONLY person Korra can muster the energy to talk to in the closing scenes. Listen to Asami's tone of voice when she says she's there if Korra needs to talk "or anything." See the way she glances down at her hand on Korra's as she says this.
Then in Book 4, Asami was the ONLY person Korra wrote back to. Asami was the ONLY one who offered to go with Korra to the South Pole. During the Wu rescue mission Korra and Asami are in perfect sync, trusting each other completely.

Another issue that LoK has is the fact that they did Katara wrong. She doesn't get her own statue, despite the fact that she was not only a water bending master, but she also helped save the world. Basically everyone in the gaang got their own statue except for Katara. Also I wish they added her in more flashbacks, she wasn't in any. I wanted to see her still fighting with the gaang against that one bloodbender in the flashbacks. And if Aang was actually favoring Tenzin over his other kids, which seems so unlike Aang. Then Katara, being the person she is would have said something. They made her out to be this quiet obedient housewife who doesn't speak up for herself or anyone else, which is unlike Katara. And also the way Aang grew up, and the fact that he seemed so loving and caring in the original series, it's so weird that they made him care abt one person over the others. I get that tenzin was an airbender and aang was probably excited, but it seems so unlike him to choose favorites. But what got me the most mad is the way that they killed off all of Korra's past lives, they destroyed the last piece of the original series we had. Don't call the series a spinoff if we have nothing from the original series. It honestly made me furious the way they made her past lives disappear, and just shatter. I don't even think I need to get started on how messed up and toxic the realationships were in this show, they were so random that it seems like they listened to a bunch of fans on some random website, Korra and Asami had an amazing friendship, but they had to turn it into a relationship, also Mako cheated on both girls twice, what-
Also I wish they gave a little more detail on some original characters, like the fact that we barely know anything abt how Sokka lived his adult life, I wish they at least told us how he died. LoK is fine ig, but atla is wayy better.

I love LOK but the relationships are pretty messy indeed. And you said everything me and other Katara stans think about what they did to Katara! I feel like the writers and the creators had no clue how to write relationships, they absolutely ruined Kataang for me by ruining Aang's development in ATLA and then making him an absent father in LOK and also by taking Katara's agency and strenght as a character through the whole relationship. It had SO much potential and I've seen so many amazing headcanons of how it could've gone, but instead the writers turned her into her grandmother! Even in the comics all she seems to care about is Aang. And yeah, I absolutely love Mako, he's probably one of my fav characters in LOK, but bruh wtf was he on with all that cheating and lack of communication?? And it's SO disrespectful that he was named after Iroh's voice actor and they made him out to act like that! Also I love Korrasami, I think the main issue isn't that they turned their friendship into romance (they do that all the time with M/F ships), but that they didn't properly develop their chemistry the same way they developed Mako and Korra's or Mako and Asami's. You could clearly see there was attraction between the M/F couples in the show, but I imagine that, bc it was Nickelodeon, there was only so much they could do. But considering how terrible they write romance I'm unsure of how much better it could've been.

@@jadenchamoun6785 I don't think Aang was a bad father. Of course, we don't know what his parenting style was exactly like as we were never really told or shown what original Avater lives were after Avatar: The Last Airbender series.
No parent is perfect. Parents are individuals who make mistakes. Aang did still had his duties of being the avatar but he also had to be a teacher to Tenzin as at some point Tenzin would he responsible for bringing back an entire culture. Also Aang was the last Airbender. His culture was taken away and had to see the skeleton of his old friend and also father figure Monk Gyatso. Which come one. That will trauamtize you. Also, culture is important to people who grew up with it. I am part of culture and I am sure if someone took it away I would be devastated as well.
Obviously he was probably excited to find Tenzin to be an Airbender because hey your culture now has a chance to come back. But he also had to be teacher and responsible to teaching Tenzin the air nation's culture and bring them back. Which would be a difficult task to do all yourself. It really is not surprising that Aang attention went a lot on Tenzin. But it is not like Tenzin had it easy either. While his siblings may have felt they were being left out. Tenzin felt that he had to be like Aang and fill out his legacy and wishes.
I dont think he neglected his children. Besides, in the end all of Aang's children: Kya, Bumi, and Tenzin understood that Aang loved them all equally.
The amount of attention someone gives you does not equal to the amount of love they have for you. Someone can give you all the attention you want but not love you. And this goes for all kinds of relationships. Family, friendship, romantic.
Besides parents can not give the same attention to each of their children. Some of their children may need it more.
For example, imagine this. Two parents have three kids. One kid however has a disorder that would affect they daily lives. Then those parents would focus a lot of their attention on that child. Because that child needs it. That does not mean the parents do not love their other children who are healthy. But that child who has a disorder needs their attention to ensure they grow up in healthy and safe environment.
Let's think of another situation, two parents have two children. One child gets pneumonia. The parents would put a lot of their attention on the kid who is sick than the kid is healthy and is not sick. That does not mean that at that time the parents love ill child more than the healthy child. They were just making sure that ill child recover safely and able to make a recovery. But to do that they needed to focus a lot of their attention on that child.
I don't need my parent's attention all the time. I am the oldest of my siblings. So I know I do not need the constant attention of my parents to ensure that they love me. I am old enough to understand that. My younger siblings would probably need their attention a lot and more than me. Because they are not yet old enough to understand that parents are humans and individuals that have their own needs and make mistakes. They are also not old enough to understand that when a parent is too busy to give their attention that it does not mean they hate them or don't love them anymore.
Now let's use the real world on Aang. Bumi and Kya are older than Tenzin. their age difference between may not be that big. But there is still a difference between each child. When Tenzin came along and find out he is an air bender. You do have to realize not only the excitement of Aang no longer being the last air bender. But also the responsibility of bringing the air nation back to life. Aang would not only be a parent to Tenzin but also a teacher to Tenzin because Tenzin would grow up to revive their air nation and ensure the culture lives on for future generations. But to ensure that Tenzin needed to learn the culture. Its beliefs, values, views, ideas, etc. And to learn all of that. Aang had to teach Tenzin. Aang had to give more attention to teach him the culture. Because if Aang did not give a little more of his time teaching the air culture. Tenzin would really struggle on reviving an entire culture that he may not understand or know a lot of.
So did Aang give more attention to Tenzin? Yes.
Did the amount of attention Tenzin was getting made Kya and Bumi feel left out? Yes, especially because their age difference was not really that big. And when your kid you essentially need the constant attention of a parent.
Did Aang love Tenzin more than Bumi and Kya? No. As I said the amount of attention someone gives you does not equal to the amount of love they have for you. As you grow older you wouldn't need the constant attention of your parent. Because you know even when they are busy or away for one day. They still love you. Which is what Bumi, Kya, and Tenzin understand. Aang put a lot of attention on Tenzin. But Aang still loved all of them.
Parenting is not an easy job. And there is not an exact correct path of how it is suppose to be. Even if a child does grow up in a healthy, safe environment and emotional support from their parent. Parents would still make mistakes. There is not a sign that says "this is the best path of parenting" but you can come close to it.

My biggest problem was that compared to ATLA, the characters of LOK were so much less likeable and less developed, in ATLA we got a whole episode centered around Zuko, Mai, Ty Lee and Azula, essentially humanizing the villains and making them very likeable, hell, Azula was my favorite character in the entire show. But in LOK its like we don’t really care about the characters besides Korra herself. Also another thing is, the show is just all action and no down time. We never really had any comedic or funny moments besides random throw ins in the show. Overall i would say LOK is a very good series but ATLA was generally better, the only part i liked about LOK more than ATLA was that i liked Korra more as an avatar and i liked the concepts more

    • @rhunan3623
      @rhunan3623 3 роки тому +65

I agree with most of the things you said. However, Our conclusions are differing. I wouldn't call LOK a very good series because if you consider the character development (just as you have done), execution of the plot and the conflicts, nothing seemed to be eligible to be classified as 'very good to me'.
In ATLA you could literally feel the crux and heat of the conflicts and their growth. Even an issue such as Sokka and Moon spirit (I've forgotten her name) was great, less than three episodes or so but boy was it great. We see him still grieving the lost relationship even when with Suki, which is something we barely see in any of LOK nonetheless looking into the main issues they had. LOK had three seasons and I don't think they were able to create anything feasible.
Then you come to the themes, they were good but they seemed forced like they were trying so hard to recreate what they got from ATLA that they started spiralling into ideologies they were not fully aware of, or they had not really though through. I agree LOK tries to be it's own story and I am aware of that but the fact that they still kept on painfully trying to make strong connections with ATLA just made them a candidate for comparison.
And not just that. Something that bothered me throughout the whole series was how easy Korra got everything she had. Like when Aang comes to give her back her bending at the end of season 1 and told her that she being at her lowest connected her to her past selves, felt so much like a big lie and is a great example to teach people of the dangers of telling only and not showing. We never actually see her learn during her lowest points. Her lowest point at that time, I presume, was her loosing her bending and the only thing we see her learn was that if she got hurt, angry or emotional enough she could unlock a new ability. And if she got sad, reclusive and neglected everyone enough she could could have Aang (or someone else ) to her aid. She never learns what it means to be actually spiritual. She also ends up depreciating herself because she's no longer a bender of more than one element and she never learns how to deal with that.
There are lots of things I believe should have been done differently before I could consider LOK a good series but at least the visuals were good and the world building too were nice.
Oh and this is just on the side but Dante Busco, who originally voiced our sweet kid Zuko in ATLA, voicing his grandson in LOK, who is also named Iroh after our sweet wise general from ATLA, felt weird and it didn't fit to me. But oh well, if he wanted to take part in the second show, then why should he be stopped.

Personally, there are still 2 more issues with LOK:
1: Korra’s “My way or the highway” attitude. While this can be helpful for getting things done quickly, it has ended up hurting people like Mako, and that was during a time of conflict. Imagine what kind of damage she could inflict with that attitude in times of peace! She could kill innocent people if she’s not careful, which would make for a interesting plot point in a new series; either the new avatar facing off against someone whose loved ones were unjustly killed by Korra, or someone in the same situation as above trying to learn to let go of their anger while helping out the new avatar! The worst part though, it never feels fully dealt with. Nothing wrong with some confidence, but Korra still feels like she would keep forcing people to go through with her ideas above all else!
2: I don’t mind how little we saw the previous team in LOK, but I do mind how we only found out recently how and why Aang died and to this day all we know about adult Sokka is he was a senator in one of the earlier councils! We all still want to know about Sokka, and maybe some love for the Cabbage man as well (how he went from merchant to tycoon)! When in Korra we seen Wan with fire bending we get a scene where a Dragon teaches him how to use it like it’s part of his body
In ATLA we see on multiple occasions of them having bending but not mastering it. It even says that it’s better to train with a master before. It hasn’t changed the lore at all

There is a bit, as its stated that the masters the first human benders learned from were the first benders period and its implied that by learning from the first benders (dragons, bison, the moon/I think fish, and the badger moles) humans were able to gain the ability to bend. Its stated over and over again in The Last Airbender, so having the bending come from the lion turtle is a change in lore because instead of learning to bend from the masters, which is how it originally was, they're just learning the proper way to handle themselves as benders if that makes any sense

Ryss Alsief there is a difference between “Taught” and “Given”
Even in Wan’s section of Korra we see him learning firebending from a dragon but the dragon didn’t give him the bending. The dragon should him how to use it as a part of his body, not as a weapon. Even Aang and Zuko were taught *real* firebending from dragon, but they could firebend before that, they still needed to be taught true firebending but they could firebend before that

@@EnderKL but he doesn't learn it, yes he learns how to master it, but he doesn't learn how to get it.
Yes he had to learn the essentials, but even if he hadn't he still had fire bending, he was given fire bending. As stated above in ATLA we are told on a number of occassions "The original X masters were X thing and they thought humans by moving through earth" Not "When humans got bending from an unknown source they learned to control it from X things that lived on earth".
And besides contradicting it also takes from the plot. Imagine how powerful it could have been if in season 3 Zaheer didn't learn to fly even partially from his given airbending, but rather he gained airbending by learning it like the original benders (clearly not from bisons, but from their techniques and philosophy), and eventually became so in touch with what it means to be an airbender that he can fly. He wasn't facilitated anything, he learnt it all on his own just like air nomads did in the beggining (this could have also helped with the restoring the air nation plot, you don't need to be given airbending by some convoluted unbalance, but from extreme spiritual connection, it gives wider range for the air nation to continue to exist). It also gives a better message: You don't need to be born with or be given certain things to do something great and succeed, you can achieve them on your own through hard work and putting your mind to it.
Yes they had to learn, but there is a great gap between working to get something and simply learning to master it fully.

Reading the arguments from the atla lore, it honestly sounds like ridiculous nitpicking. It sounds like atla left it open ended and korra filled a piece that no one really thought about. Everyone just assumed that humans gained the ability and were taught by the creatures. Which tbh, if that was the case, then any non-bender could still seek out those creatures and learn bending from them, but you don't see that ever happen.

My biggest complaint with Korra was that she used the avatar state so much that it felt like she was abusing it. She’s use for many tiny insignificant things that she shouldn’t have used it for, like winning a race, that it just became useless and not a magnificent and powerful as it was originally. It just seemed as if she was using it for show rather than a the last straw when fighting her powerful enemy, like that of some of the previous avatars used it as (minus a few avatars), which to me feels unrealistic that she wouldn’t know to not use the avatar state as a party trick as Katara and the order of the white lotus were guiding her. Especially Katara, as it hurt her to see Aang in the avatar state and she knows how physically and mentally draining it is and all the steps that it takes to fully unlock it. Also the fact the the developers had in the beta version of A:TLA had rewrote it so that instead of Aang over using the state, recovering fast from it and overall acting cocky with it to it being a draining thing and even having an episode that was dedicated to having someone try to push Aang into using it so that they could end the war fast and he, Katara, and Sokka realizing it wasn’t a good idea and instead focusing on continuing the plot of Aang mastering the four elements even after Aang mastered them all he still treated the state as a last resort kinda thing.

Here is the difference between Aang and Korra. Aang never wanted to be the Avatar, and he already has his own identity of who he is has a person outside of being the Avatar. He comes to accept the fact that he is the Avatar, and that he must face the Fire Lord to save the world. His character arc is about him over coming struggles to become a fully realized Avatar, and how being the Avatar challenges his own morals and personal believes. Korra on the other hand, is the complete opposite. She already knew that she was that Avatar from a very young age, and she embraced her role as the Avatar as her only place in the world. Korra was eager to be the best Avatar she could be and live up to Aang's Legacy. Unfortunately for her, TLOK is about deconstructing that Legacy. The villains of each season of the show all have their own ideologies that take a piece of Korra away from her, and fundamentally challenge what it means to be the Avatar, and makes you question whether the world really needs it or not. The first fundamental aspect of being the Avatar is the ability to bend all four elements. In the first episode of TLOK, we see Korra bending 3 of the 4 element when she was a toddler. Korra is absolute bending prodigy, and bending is the main aspect of being the Avatar that she embraces the most. After all, mastering all four element is what allowed Aang to defeat the fire lord and save the world, right? So, who is the villain of the first Season? Someone who leads an anti-bending revolution, and says that the world would be better of without it. Then, after losing her bending, she tries to embrace her spiritual side. Another fundamental aspect of being the Avatar is that they are the bridge between the human and spirit worlds. So, the villain of the second season is some who believes that there shouldn't be a bridge, and that humans and spirits should live together. The next fundamental aspect of being the Avatar, is that they are usually put in a position of high statues and athuority. We see Korra take part in political affairs in Republic City. So, the villain of season three is an anarchist who believes that no single person should have that much power and authority over others, and so he tries to end the Avatar cycle. And Finally, the most important thing about being the Avatar, is that they are tasked with the responsibility of bringing balance to the world. In season four, which is literally called balance, Korra runs away from her responsibility of being the Avatar for three years. She thinks that the world needs her, but as Toph says, the world doesn't really need her. The more problems she solves, the more new problems emerge. The world always seems to need fixing, but book four asked the question, why should it be the Avatar's job to fix it? While Korra is gone, Kurvira does a successful job of bringing balance to the Earth Kingdom, and making it a better place to live. Book four shows us that the world shouldn't rely on the Avatar to fix everyones problems. Everyone should do their part in bringing peace and balance to the world. Korra's character arc isn't about her becoming a better Avatar. She is already pretty much a fully realized Avatar from the beginning, having mastered all four element's and having full control over the Avatar State by the end of the first Season. It's about her defining her place in the world, and figuring out who she is as a person outside of being the Avatar.

I'd like to bring up two points about Toph that I think go pretty unnoticed when discussing her being a chief:
    A) She didn't join the gaang to help them end the war. She even says "It's not my problem" to Katara, when told [by her] that Aang needed to master Earthbending to defeat the Firelord. She [initially] joined both because she thought it sounded fun (cue to "I am not Toph, I am MELON LORD [*insert evil, chaotic laughter XD*]" ) and to be away from her controlling parents - which brings me to my next point:
    B) Toph despised rules and responsibilities. By the end of Book 3, she STILL hates both of these things, only she's learned that accepting help from people who care about her is not a sign of weakness (which, imho, relates more to her relationship with her disability, rather than her views on rules). It might not be seen as that important, but here's the thing: the army thrives on and cultivates a very strict you-have-to-obey-your-superiors-without-questioning-them sort of environment and it is common knowledge just about how abundant rules are in the army, not to mention how you have to wear the same uniform (as people of your rank) and are expected to fit in, rather than stand out (in terms of behavior, character and looks, not performance). Even though I can accept Toph going through many character changes, this one hits too close to her core - in my personal opinion - to be a choice that Toph would ever make. Her not being a perfect mom or opening an Earthbending/metalbending academy or even retiring to live in the swamp all seem perfectly fine to me, but not her being a chief police. The writers tried to make it more believable by having her create a special unit of metalbenders (which she totally would, btw), but that's not the problem here. ATLA specifically uses Toph not caring all that much about the war (which makes sense, she was not affected by it nearly as much as any other gaang member) to contrast her with the other members of the group (Aang, Katara, Zuko and Sokka - Hell, even Suki seems more concerned and affected by the war than Toph). She may have decided that she wanted to dedicate herself to a bigger cause later on in life, but her ideals always seemed closer to self-reliability, freedom and identity/self-expression to me than justice and order and even then, there are many many ways she could've dedicated herself to her cause without being so restricted as a result of being part of the police force. So yeah, these are just my two cents on the topic. You might think differently and that's alright. After all, we're not these characters anyway, but nevertheless, I think Toph being a cop was an odd choice on the writers' part.

    • @ThreadBareHope1234
      @ThreadBareHope1234 Рік тому

I agree. I think everyone is more focused on freedom and self expression when they are young, but you also make a good point about her seeing the state of the world and that might have influenced her decision to later dedicate herself to a cause. Again, she's 30 something. She would've had plenty of time to express herself, and as is the case with most adults, that gets old eventually. It's a sign of maturity and that they gained a broader understanding of fulfillment.
Idk why this guy is getting his panties in a wad about her priorities changing.

Bending, in LOK, was given by Lion Turtles. It was not earned, it was literally given-hell, Wan *accidently* created a huge flame at the first try. In ATLA, bending of similar proportion was something you'd have to practice for a few months-you'd at least have to have an idea of it like Aang did when he burned Katara. Shoe horning in Wan mimicking a dragon does not suddenly excuse that the creators rewrote *how* people learned the elements-that was them playing games with continuity and technicalities and it's lazy. And again, this was during the era where bending the elements did not happen-period. That comes *AFTER* the Avatar, and it looks like people had been doing this well before Wan stumbled across a butchered ying yang symbol.

The Avatar isn't supposed to solve every problem like a Superhero. They're meant to deal with the threats that throw the Physical World and or the Spirit World out of balance. It's like a scale, you shouldn't have one more than the other. Also Evil is subjective, for example: killing the Fire Lord. Everyone said to kill him but Aang just couldn't do it, Aang thought ending a life was evil, while others said it was a necessary evil. So become Evil to end Evil? That's what they wanted him to do. Sokka was a hunter and would kill to eat meat, is that Evil? Its okay to have morals and values, every Avatar has them, every person has them. But all problems balance themselves naturally eventually, and Chaos will always naturally ensue as well. The Avatar, Ravaa and Vataau aren't necessary, and if you feel that they are, why? I get they embody good and evil but its all subjective. Who decides whats good? Ravaa? Yet in Ravaa there is evil too, just like how in Vataau there is good. Yin and Yang. Its too complicated in actuality, but simplified in the show based on the creators obvious bias, so it shouldn't even exist in Avatars lore as it was presented. People think Good and Evil is black and white but its not that simple and will never be.

They REALLY messed up the spiritual part of the show in LOK
    - Raava, apart from being the angriest peace spirit possible, does not fit asian philosophy at all. When ATLA always respected the concepts of balance, of Yin and Yang that are so fundamental to Asian philosophy, LOK is back to good old CHRISTIAN MORALS : GOOD VS EVIL. GOOD must win. Great. That has never been seen before...
    - All the spirits in ALTA were very morally neutral. There were like natural forces, neither good or bad, just to be accounted for. Koh was willing to answer questions for a chance to add a new face to his collection. Hei-bai was attacking innocent people because he was angered at the fire nation destroying his forest. Wan-shi-tong was a peaceful spirit but would not tolerate his knowledge being used for war, even if it is to end one, etc.
In LOK we have either nice fluffy flying bunnies or corrupted purple spirits. All spirits are intrinsecly good and humans are the ones corrupting them.
LOK is manichean and lost a lot of the respect ALTA gave to asian culture.

Tenzin for a time being, was the other last airbender. His children wasn't even born yet and Korra wasn't even an airbender yet until she was around 17 or 18

If we wanna get technical in the original show Aang wasn't even the last Airbender. Appa was an Airbender too. Aang was the last Air Nomad, but not last Airbender. They learned bending from the flying bison.

@@melodygarrison8071 So then Tenzin wasn't ever the last one either. By the time Aang and Appa died, Oogi or one of the sky bison kin would have been born.

Lee Fransaw well his species of sky bison, he was the last. The one we saw in LOK was sorta like a different variation if I can say that. They visibly have a red tint too them opposed to Appa

Are people seriously attaching RL american cop issues to a fictional cartoon character?
