85 CR 500, first kick cold start, redneck style

  • This video is for all the whiners out there who need armour to start their bikes. Good technique and proper timing/jetting will prevail, no kickbacks ever. Normal procedure would use a couple of gentle `primer kicks`instead of the rocking back and forth in gear, but it`s intended to be a one kick deal. Long live big bore 2 strokers!

      Scott Patterson This one is super clean too. It’s so nice to see how many people restore and/or preserve these bikes, let alone any of the old classic bikes.

    That is a real nice looking bike,gotta love it. I just turned 62 and have been looking for a Honda XR (had a new 1974 XL 350 for a year then it was stolen). So with me getting a bit older I want to get an "enduro" (man is that word old) to ride around town (I live on the edge of the Mojave Desert). Way back in 1974 the best part of my day was riding that Honda back and forth to work, just loved quitting time.

      Hello gamejr. In my search for a new (most likely my last) bike I am coming across many comments like yours. What I mean is, many others are saying these XL 350's handle very poorly, like a tank. I found it to be a bit ponderous also but I thought it was just me. I ask if it is simply that the bikes are overweight or is there some problem with frame geometry or frame stiffness? Most "official" sites that discuss the history of the XL line say the the 250 is overall much better. That sure is one nice looking CR 500 in the video. Perhaps you know which of these mid 70's to late 80's Hondas are most prefered. Are the dual carb bikes in any way prefered?

    See so many lame boys on here trying to kick the 500s, they all only move the leg instead of putting the whole body behind that foot, finally found this gem, a proper kick start on a 500

    • @jbsleddin
      @jbsleddin  6 років тому +3

      Matthew Rocha I have had a few of them over the years, had another 85 with a newer cylinder on it, they have the exhaust "scallops" which make starting much easier. I could start that one flat footed, but this 85 needs 100% commitment, pussy footing won't get you anywhere. Thanks for watching!

    • @ricgsy7825

      That's the only only way to start those bikes dude. I had a YZ490 and start it the same, Lift your whole body high off the seat and stand high on the kickstart and slam down as hard as you can. My 490 was a pig to start. I'm 6ft 4 so no problem getting high on the kickstart. So many guys try starting them without even lifting their butt off the seat. Certainly gets other bikers watching you when your having a hard time getting a 490 started.

      jbsleddin Yeah I geuss 450's are a little rare. Mine is actually a 450 with a 480 cylinder bolted on the 450 case. Im stuck with 4 speeds. I really want an old 80's yamaha, But no more bikes until I get rid of some of my other projects.

    Hell no, the 85 is not "too old", most will tell you it is the most brutal engine out there though, not a "beginners" bike by any standards. If you get anything that is pre-aluminum water pump housing, expect a nasty mess, but don't let it discourage you. They are all repairable.

    "Only stings for a second" That is some funny sh** there. My 84 was pretty bad and I had a technique that was similar. All about getting a nice charge of fuel into the engine for a cold start. But a slipper on Sunday, better start on the first kick. Good job.

    my first bike was a cr 125 when i was 14 a year later i bought an 86 cr 500 and that was it,i have owned several 500s since and would never change to anything else,but it has nothing to do with how hard you kick the bike a 10 year old can start a 500 as long as u get the bike on the right stroke ,which u can feel it in the kicker bang u got it

    • @jbsleddin
      @jbsleddin  10 років тому +2

      I slightly disagree, at least when it comes to the older (88-previous) bikes that don`t have the relief scallops cut into the exhaust port. If you don`t kick it hard enough, all you get is pain in the foot. LOL

    The kick back was never a problem, but the sudden stop at the bottom hitting peg was. The kicker was just a bit short. Used to eventually knock a hole in the bottom of my boots. It hurt really bad when the hole was there. I finally found the TT500 had a rubber pad that fit perfect over the kicker. That saved my boots. I used to tilt it over to prime. I will never forget my first ride on the 85 CR500. Oh! It was $1895 with a free helmet. Forks sucked.

    All I do start my 2000 Kx500 is turn the fuel on, roll the bike forwards and backwards a few times in neutral just to mix the fuel, especially if it has been sitting for over a month, give the bike 4 light prime kicks, and the bike fires right up on first tdc kick.

    The JB Weld repair is a pretty tedious job, but worth it in the end if you want to keep it original. Most guys can't be bothered and will just upgrade to the newer 2-piece aluminum clutch cover. I have 2 JB repairs under my belt and am about to start my third on this 88 I picked up recently. Maybe I'll make a video of this one.

    Thats why youll find some of the newer 450s and higher cc have a compression release lever you can pull when you start it. These dont. They can hurt you if you dont do it right.

    I had one of those bikes and walked around for a whole summer with a bruised foot. The kikstarter hits the footpeg at the end of travel.

      Yes, it does. The first day I got it, before I knew the proper starting technique, I ended up putting a hole through the bottom of my work boots and badly bruising my foot.

    Well you started it with one kick. But that was a whole lotta prep leading up too it. Rocking the bike back n forth works the best. My 87 looked exactly like yours with the back drum as well.

    Just tilt it on its side till gas trickles out the carb overflow tube and you see it dripping on the ground and find tdc, then one kick and it will fire right up without finding gears and rocking it back and forth like your lost.

      When it's been sitting for long periods of time I usually do that as well, but thanks for your input.

    wunderfull Bike - sound is good ! slipers - yeah one kick , but if you must do more kicks to starting the engine , you feel it weeks ;-) the kickstarter destroy the slipers . I destroyed my Sportsshoes at the trying to start my cr500 `98
