KX500 first start after top end rebuild (Best sounding two stroke?)

- ACTUAL START AT: 2:00 just to clearify, i left the two first minutes in to show that this really was the first start and that it didnt start first kick.
i recently did a top end rebuild on my 500 two stroke. i changed the piston, power valves and of course gaskets. i used a wossner piston. cometic gaskets. and mps racing valves.
sadly my subscribtion for my editing software ran out. so im stuck with the windows movie maker. which is why the video is lacking in quality. but hopefully the sound should make up for it :)

Id like to adress a few things that i see reocouring in the coments.
1 "just start it" the racthet mechanism is worn and one of the teeths isnt grabbing. So the effective stroke is shorter. Also i have to make sure its grabbing or it will slip. So no "jumping on it"
2 "the idle is low" yes..yes it is. And yes i am awere that there is a idlescrew
3 "why are you rocking it back and fourth/leaning the bike" these are priming techniqes that make the bike easier to start. These are mostly common for big bore engines. Also finding the top dead center is essential to get the bike started.
4 "edit the video!" No! I wanted to show that this was the first start and that it didnt start first kick.

You said that you had to make sure the kicker was grabbing or it would slip. I am having the same problem with my yamaha blaster. Half of the time it just kicks all the way down without turning over the motor, and half the time it actually catches. What caused this on yours

Tighten up your rear suspension, the two round locking nut things. That little rattle you can hear in the video is usually those two rings lose and vibrating around.
if i remember correctly it was one of the exhaust springs that fell of

Forgot to add... everybody has their on technique in starting their 2t bike, but it does make me laugh when they say give it a hard kick. A 2t big bore doesn't need a hard kick it needs a fast kick ffs.
thank you! i always try to assume ignorance over malice. People simply just dont know that diffrent engines prefer diffrent ways of starting. not to mention that the first thoot on the kick gear is missing, and i have to keep pressure on the lever in order for it to catch at all

Been riding the KX500 since the mid '90's. Always bought them new. Never seen them started like this before. Good that he's wearing a boot though.

I had to watch this twice. Never seen that technique before . Got maybe 300 hours on the KX500 . Still got a silver frame '04 in the shed. They're not a scary bike at all. Short shift them and use the torque all day long makes for a great ride. And, they're fast enough too, pulling the wheel in top gear is a guaranteed given the traction and check you've got room ahead when you put the wheel down, you're going pretty fast. The KX500 doesn't have the great brakes that a CR500 has. They probably are a scary ride if you don't remember you're on a 100kg bike with 65 hp and over do it. Then you'll be in Hospital.

Next time just kick it over ,don't bother lying it down or rocking in gear its pointless, how many gp riders have you ever seen doing that .
it's just a way of priming it for coldstarts. it's not stricly requiered but it does help. especially with the 500cc's

Nice post. Had a KX500 since new, first bike new was a '97 . Now have an '04 since new still got it and 250 hours plus on the 500's now .The KX500 is a lovely bike to ride . Just treat them with respect.

When you started those old 500cc 2 strokes, You needed to know what you were doing or it would kick your ass back. I know from experience.

Nothing beats a 500 in Sound. Nothing.....I have watched Thorpe,Malherbe,Carqvist, Geboers, Leif Persson,Jobe , Chandler and all those guys battle it out at Namur....i still get tears just by remebering the Sounds of real Works-bikes....

I’ve had a 87 one a long time ago and had more then 20 sport bikes since then most powerful one my ZX-14R with 210 HP at the back wheel
And even this one was a pussy compared with the KX 500 that’s a time machine I’ve never seen a more violent thing in this world

LoL I own a cr500 and even when she's got a new top end it does not take this much effort to start. U don't need to rock it back and fourth in gear, just prime it by slowly turning the crank at the kick starter then get it to TDC and jump on the kick start and it will fire right up, I don't have a decompression valve either so it does take all 260 pounds of my weight to start her

He is handling the bike so carefully because the kick start may backfire. Thats some sirious shit, a friend of mine broke his ankle because his 2 stroke kicked back like a mule.

Whats with all that pushing through compression stroke just to hit back on compression stroke. Every time up and down = compression stroke. You don't want to kick through the compression stroke. Big bores use your kick and rotational inertia to fire on the compression stroke following your spin up. And rolling your bike in gear doesn't prime the crankcase if the rear is just sliding around. Sweet build though.

I had a 88 CR 500 back in the day,that was a pig to start but my god what a machine when it was running!!!,it pulled you’re arms out and you would have to be right over the bars even in 4th to stop it going on the back wheel.....good times😁😁😁😁😁

When I put a new piston in mine. Had the timing off by few degrees. It backfired on me. Kicked back on the downstroke. If the kick lever hadn't broke. It would have broke my foot.
Kick levers are usually a bit cheaper than knee surgery

I love watching people try and act like they know what they are doing when trying to find TDC on the cylinder but they don’t even know what cycle they are in whether it’s compression stroke or exhaust stroke. Because I do the same shit and I know the difference lol
