Jett & Hunter Lawrence SHRED a CR500 Two-Stroke! | RAW

- We were out at Perris Raceway yesterday for the 2022 Alpinestars gear launch where their athletes, such as both Jett and Hunter Lawrence, were on-hand logging laps. About half-way through the event, Red Bull's Aaron Colton brought his beautifully restored CR500 over to the HRC Honda tent, and only a few moments passed before the brothers asked to take the beast for a spin. We captured some of the action before talking to both Hunter and Jett about their experience on the two-stoke legend. Check it out!
I just became a Hunter Lawrence fan. He went after it. Both paid much respect to the 2 stroke days of the past!
I became a Hunter Lawrence fan after southwick.
He definitely looked uncomfortable on it
If you never got to see a 500cc national I feel sorry for you. You cannot imagine what 40 of them launching off the start sounds and feels like.
I know the current 450's have roughly the same hp but it's just not the same. I rode a 500 one time and never cared to ride one again. They are a true beast.
That power band hits different I ride 2000 kx250 and that power and scares the shit outta me sometimes
Agree on that. There is nothing like the sound of a big bore 2stroke starting gate drop. Even the 250s are amazing to hear. Not Hart ng on the new 4strokes but when it comes to sound the 2strokes can't be beat.
Its all about the hit my friend
450s are powerful but it's soo much more use able than a 500 2 stroke they generally feel like they are trying to kill you when you ride one 🤣
@@nathancrittenden8525 perfect description of the different power delivery between the two. 4 strokes roll into the power smoother and is more predictable/ controllable 2stroke big boar hits like a hurricane and is harder to controll.
Watching dave Thorpe ride the last true factory hrc Honda 500 was a thing of beauty back in the day
Yeah loved Dave on that 85/86 full works c.r 500s
And dave Thorpe was so smooth
Thank you for NOT adding a 'sound track.' The motor does just fine all by itself, so to speak.
Don’t worry , the feelings will come back to your hands after a day or two.
I want them to ride a 1992 WR500. Holy Moly that thing was BUZZZZZERRRR Bike. And air-cooled.
Andrew Marshall. Rite! LOL
....40 years later RJ happens to mention the HRC bikes had balanced cranks with no vibration lol
😂😂😂😂absolutely
Jett did not look comfortable! 🤣 but Hunter was starting to enjoy it 🤙🏻
I think that was the first time he had arm pump XD
Yeah the blurred vision coming into corners is the killer.
Agreed.👍
I reckon Hunter displayed what is lurking. Quietly. Hunter is hard coer.
I raced Maico 1983-84 both 250 and 500 class every weekend. Getting on the 250 after the 490 was like a baseball player swinging the bat with weights on it to warm up before going to the plate. After getting off the 490 you could absolutely shred on the 250. Miss being able to ride like I did in the day...
Too all you out there riding today, enjoy it while you can; life is short.
The old saying goes "the older I get the faster I was" :)
500's, the definition of BRAAAAAP!!!
I had similar setup. a 250 and 490 Sand Spider. The 490 was a awesome motor.
I love how genuine Jett is in this interview. Cheers man!
I was a bad A grade 125 Rider in Australia in the 80’s. we had a track to practice on in a pine Forrest
One day a guy showed up on an 86 CR 500. He hung with us and we all asked, and got a blast on it.
For about 6 minutes I’ve never Been so scared yet exhilarated in the same breath.
I humbly gave the bike back and went home with my tail between my legs.
You have to ride one to truely appreciate its raw power. And it’s beauty. I never rode Honda, but they made damn fine two strokes! Shame they’ve let that go
Love watching the young guys riding stuff they never have before.
The American people could learn from these guys such good manners and polite thier parents should be proud.
I just think these two guys are enjoying every minute of there time racing and living in the U.S.
Big bore 2 strokes. You either love em or hate em. I understand how powerful the new 450's are but for me there is no substitute. The shear violence and "tank slapping" mayhem of a bad ass 500 2 stroke on a big track is something every MX lover should experience at least once in their life.
I just sold my '20 CRF450, less torque than my 500 and not that enjoyable. The 450 was a struggle to lift the front wheel in top gear, the CR5 does it on the sandy sections. Front end stability was the best improvement over the old girl, but I have ohlins front and rear, a pulse induction kit and e.start on the 500 now so no need for a modern bike as I get older and struggle to kick it!!
Hard to beat a CR500 for pull your arms out of your shoulder sockets fun. If my mind serves me correctly I think the '83-84 were supposed to be the best years for the Honda CR500.
Hell yes, Brother!!
You need to change the title to Hunter kinda shreds and Jett putts around on a CR500.
My thoughts exactly !
I was waiting for the shred. Shit I can do THAT.
Like how Jett admits hes alittle afraid of it haha. Most people have that reaction xD
everyone go lookup 500 cc's of glory if you want to see a dude actually shred and race a 500.
You need Jeremy McGrath to do that bike justice, if you are going to have a rider shreds on a CR500. He was not even getting into powerband.
Back in the late 80s I regularly rode all three classes in 1 day. 125, 250, and 500 some times motos being back to back with just enough time to change goggles before the next gate drop. The old sway back KX's. My favorite bike was A Klemm research kited 1989 KX285 that would holeshot the 500s. AHH the good ole days!
Sounds like BILLY LILES BEFORE HE WENT FULL BLOWN PRO. WOULD RACE BIG MONEY RACES AROUND THE SOUTHEAST ON HIS KX TEAM. RACE ALL 3 CLASSES, 125, 250, AND 500. 20 MINUTES PLUS 2 AND THERE WERE MANY TIMES HE WENT HOME AFTER WINNING EVERY RACE. I NO. I RACED 125 AND WE HAD GREAT BATTLES ALOT OF TIMES, BUT I COULD NEVER BEAT HIM STRAIGHT UP. I ALWAYS GOT ALOT OF HOLESHOTS BUT HE WOULD BE THE ONE TO HOUND ME AND GET AROUND ME 97 PERCENT OF THE TIME. I WOULD GO AS HARD AS I COULD TRYING TO STAY WITH HIM BUT HE ALWAYS GOT LIKE 3 TO 5 SECONDS AHEAD AND THEN WOULD JUST STAY THERE UNTIL THE RACE WAS OVER.
Proof right there how mx has been pussified thru the years. That was even on a prepped track. Lets see that again at Saddleback or carslbad midweek practice. Kudos though to those young men for being honest!!
Carson Brown is the real beast for a new school rider on a 500
He is amazing 💯
He'd make an ag100 look fast. Shreds anything that lad
"Did he used to ride with dual shocks?"
That's cute. Seriously endearing to hear Jett say that.
Those Lawrence boys are both such great role models to kids these days. So glad that they're doing well in this sport.
And he actually did ride dual shocks.
I remember drooling over the Mugen Honda Johnny O rode before going to Factory Honda.
Him, Hannah, Glover, Johnson, Wardy, Decoster etc etc were my childhood heroes and all over my bedroom walls
Nice to see the O Show again!
Yeah, i was like "OMG!". Haven't seen him for long time. Him, Jeff Ward, David Baily, Ron Lechien, Broc Glover, Micky Diamond and Guy Cooper, my favorite Ricky "Bad Boy" Johnson. Those were the days. I've never forgotten the 500 national at Washugal back in the day in the PNW. Miss my 88&92 CR250R.
These guys are not going to jeopardize an outdoor title by riding an unknown bike to the limit. Especially a CR500.
EPIC, Next we need Tomac on a 500
Fully agree
Unfortunately, it won't be the KX500. It will be a YZ490 air hammer...😎
@@jonjackson6245 him on the kx would have been awesome. At least we got McGrath on the kx.
Yessss
Hes the best modern rider to watch on a 2 stroke. Hed go awesome on a kx 5
What a delight waking up to this
Hunter to O'show, "did you ride 500's?" Awesome!
O Show was on the 1981 motocross de nation's when they rode 250 and the next weekend 500 against the world's fastest
Coolest and most honest 500 vid I’ve seen yet
Respect to the dudes back in the day
Haha you could tell Jett didn’t like it and hunter loved it
Fact: Johnny O's Mugen bike was dual shocked.
IKR?
Wasn't his 1980 USGP win at Mid-Ohio on a twin shocked white Mugen??
@@awalker8112 All I remember is I had Mugen boot gators over my Red/Blue Scott boots, great era.
@@racerxyz8833 I remember him pulling into the Indian Dunes pits on that Mugen. He had 2 seconds on everyone right then. It was bad ass for sure.
Young Jett knows some shit.
I remember Johnny O'Mara in Maggiora, Morocross of Nation in Italy ... passing the 500 world champion with Honda David Thorpe, in the first descent with a little Honda 125....what a skill ( and legend ) rider...
Great to see Hunters respect for the 5 hunj. He was once a promising boxer who probably understands the grunt and respect to do both of those sports
1980 Mugan 125 twin shock Honda put "O SHOW" on the map!!
Or beating 500 world champ Dave Thorpe on a 125 at MXON....
I enjoyed watching these super talented brothers ride the big bore 2-stroke. Jett’s question about whether Johnny O’Mara rode dual shock bikes was like a child asking his dad if he lived when there dinosaurs.
Best video on the internet atm
That CR500 was light years ahead of what they rode in the 70's. Put them on Rex Staten's CZ 400 that he lead the USGP on then ask them what they thought of that bike!
Yeah definitely
Come on let's get Hunter on the 500 for the RB Straight rythm ! :D
The CR500 and all the other big bore 2-strokes were designed for one purpose, to win at moto-cross. In the hands of a capable rider you just saw they are hard to beat for the 4-stroke. The 4-stroke hooks up quicker, but when the 2-stroke gets on the pipe you better be hanging on and pointed in the right direction, they are an animal!
O’Mara rode a dual shock Mugen ME125 to win a USGP, so he did get a taste of the dual shock era👍
Nice video. It's crazy for me being an older guy and having taken five motorcycle magazines a month and reading them all cover to cover for somebody not to know all the details about Johnny O ( or all the other writers for that matter, LOL)....
Especially when he is standing right there! OG Boss!!!
Watch Kaplan USA for some awesome two stroke ripping!
Be blessed!
Eventually,
there will be kids who will not know how to kick start a bike just like no one knows how to drive a standard anymore.
damn u just called me a no one
@@jenkyelbows Not at all, was a general term. meant that kids will grow up and no nothing but electric start and have never almost broke there foot kicking over a 500..When that kicker comes backup it hurts..
He had to tell him at the beginning.
I can drive standard all day long
@@obro8709 haha i think dylan was saying that he drives stick. But they for sure. I don't get manufacturers phasing out kickstarts. When you run out of battery the bike just becomes a useless brick
Most of today's riders don't understand how it was back in the day. So cool they rode the bike and had a lot of respect for the ones who did. I had a YZ 490
...Maico 490 and KX500... Way "back in the day"...
Jett looks so scared of the big dog
He should be,that dog will bite ya
If jett had a week on that he would be absolutely flying. Hunter gelled with it a bit quicker. Over revving a 500 slows you down
Yeah a slighty different ball game to a 250 2 stroke isnt it??
As soon as I saw this video, I knew they were going to freak out about the vibration!!! Lucky they did not try an air cooled one!!!
I love the gear y’all are wearing 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Dude my buddies had a 500 growing up and that thing would vibrate my feet numb through my alpinestar boots...it was insane...but there is nothing that barks like a 500 does...they are literally insane..
I grew up in the era watching Rick Johnson, Jean-Michel Bayle and Jeff Stanton ripping the treads off these CR500s back in the day….those men were true savages!
17k view in 6 hours. This is known as the two-stroke effect
THIS IS WHAT WE WANTEDDDD
Those boys got to ride one of the greatest machines Honda ever produced the '94 CR500
Good-looking bike too with the yellow plates.
That was fun to watch!
Still have my 1986 short stroke that is a peaky beast compared to those modern more friendly CR500. Cool to see the lads earning respect of the beast.
The 4strokes are a pleasure in comparison.
YUP thats the one I rode, no need to get past 1/4 throttle! Just hold it at 1/4 throttle, pick your gear and pull in the clutch when you needed to slow down! The powerband was just above idle! LOL
@@JeffJackson86 that's the one... either wheel spin or stamd... I might be bias but the dark orange, blue seat and gold rims makes it the best coloured model as well.
I've also got an 86. The newer cr500s were way more tame. If that kid wants to crap his pants, he should ride one with modern suspension and the 86 or 87 motor in it.
My friend had a perfect condition last year cr500 (2001). When I rode it I swear I felt like I was on a cr250 power band wise with a little more torque than a cr250. It was not even close to the same hit as my 86 cr500.
haha Hunter is a perfect fit for the 500! He looked GREAT!!
Change the title to “Lawrence Brothers Terrified of CR500”
Nothing wrong with being scared of a 500, only a foolish man didn't fear and respect the 500.
😂😂😂😂
Now put them on an old Maico 501 that has had engine mods.🤪
Hunter is all about it! Be fun to see him at world 2 stroke in 5-7 yrs
Jett…yes oddly he did look a little goony 😂

Omg!
When he asked to O'Show:
Did you race 500?
C'mon somebody whip him..
My son has an ‘85 that scares me to even look at .
I made the mistake of attempting to race it in a 45 minute G.P. when I was in my 50’s , I still have nightmares about that .
6:20 ..."back in the day ~ it used to be Dual shocks...that's crazy"... LOL... Yes it was - back in the day!... (I'm 62 - & still race mx)...
Hunter looked at home on that thing
Hunter Shreds and Jett Cruising. Those bikes are scary as hell
Jett wasn’t sure what to do with that thing 🤣🤘🏼🤘🏼
You have surpassed hopper for the best clickbait of 2021
Awesome!! LOL
Looks over at Johnny O'Mara and asked "didn't you race these". Loved it.
Those CRF250s are going to feel like pit bikes after this.
I recall when the Suzuki TM400 Cyclone initially came out around 1971 everyone that raced one sounded like blap, blap blap, balp, etc. Nobody could hold the throttle open for more than a second maybe two at most before backing off. Then came the heavy flywheel to help tame the beast.
Cheers for the video swap, was cool to see their response after riding it.
So many wankers on here complaining how slow they rode. They are in contention for a AMA motocross title, there is no way they would just jump on a CR500 and go balls to the wall. Hunter did look comfy 👌
The beast,be ware😮
Little Jeff Ward rode the wheels off his KX500
It all depends on the era you rode or raced in. Johnny O, Bailey, Johnson, Glover etc etc all manhandled these for long long long ass motos and super fit athletes for the era. Can they compare? Of course not. You have to give massive props for the new whipper snappers for at least trying one even at practice pace. 100% guarantee they will never forget the experience and bow down to those that raced them for a living or rode them for "Fun".
Two of you r most incredible riders the faces of the sport are telling you to bring them back when will you listen !!!!
there’s a honda team manager cringing behind the couch watching this 🤣
I used to race these two stroke beasts (87 CR500 83480) and everytime I try to explain to the younger riders on 4 strokes just how much VIOLENT POWER that they have compared to the 4 strokes i get the same look/ responce of yeah right old man UNTIL AFTER THEY'VE ATTEMPTED TO EVEN TRY TO START ONE TO BEGIN WITH THEN THE HOLY F**K 😳😱 LOOK AFTER THEY HAVE RIDDEN ONE 🤣🤣🤣
BRING BACK THE 500CC TWO STROKE PRO NATIONALS 😎💪⚡
And they had 2×45 min motos in the GPs back in the day 😳😳
3 x 45min motos! They where proper warriors I don't know how they did it
@@nathancrittenden8525 they were just fighting to stop on the bike
Grit, determination, and training.
Johnny O' raced the 1986 500 nationals. That was the first year the premiere class was split between 250 and 500 classes. He won the first moto of the series at Red Bud.
Danny Chandler used to go nuts on these big bikes, he really pushed them hard!
Magoo was on a class of his own in his prime.... so sad how he ended...
Nice to see Johnny O again. Still looks like he could be racing today.
Through the desert those things were monsters!
Thanks for always bring such awesome content! And...ask JohnnyO about laydown & stright-up and down dual shocks. Guaranteed night racing at Indian Dunes he had a period on those setups!
what a great idea!
Suspension -1000% POWER: the power of dreams sir
😂😂😂intimidated/respecting the 500..the OGs are sitting back smiling
Lol that was BADASS seeing them riding that
The men racing these things were crazy 😂👍🏼
Great bike, nice track!
What the fuck Hunter looks exactly like David Thorpe out there, all fast and gentlemanly looking with style so perfect it's almost snobby, like how dare you not have your elbows raised to exactly 60°...Johnny O rode 500s at the MXdN when it was MX and Trophy Des format back in the year.
Johnny O' also raced the 1986 500 nationals. That was the fist year the premiere class was split between 250 and 500 classes. He won the first moto of the series at Red Bud.
O show also rode the 500 at the USGP carlsbad around 83 or 84? I believe he finished in the top five...
Hunter looks like Jeff Ward on the big bike 😂
The big dawg is eating now !!! 💪
How many people on here realize that Johnny "O Show" Omara pulled off one the greatest upsets in motocross history. Beat the world mx champion with a production CR 125 against David Thorpe on a WORKS CR 500. Great story. 86 MXDN.
You could see that Jett was scared to ride that thing, and Hunter was having fun. Neither one of them were "shredding" it like Neville Bradshaw does.
Who cares, they don"t care about you lol....
Gotta love the 500s
Johnny O wanders in from no where ! These kids don't know Johnny was almost as fast as they are on his CR125
The CR 500 clears jumps with such ease.
Legendary Bike🔥
Old school meets new school.
That's the bike men rode, before groomed track's and over pampering. When the U.S. used to dominate the MXoN!! Jeff Ward could prob go out there on a KX500 and beat both of them. Lol
no power bands were harmed in the making of this
Race one somewhere.. you guys would do really well on a 500 2 stroke mx bike. Daniel C from OZ.
Boy's rode it well for no time on it..hunter up it son...missed my 500 riding it at coolum and Toowoomba was fun..trail rides wide open 5th gear..
Mint man the bike is just ticking over
Had a 89 cr500, lots if fun. Was tricky trying to double class that thing along with a kx125!
If there is lots of vibration, check the engine mounts loosen and relighted to specs.. I rode nothing but 500s my whole riding days.. I loved the grip and strength that it took to ride it the 500s . Listen Jett and his brother are far from men , they are soft period .. Jo Jo Keller was a man , God rest Danny Hamel , he was nasty on the Kaw 500 . Larry Rossler, , Gram Noice Roger Decoster To name a few who could let and open bike just flat out run. Kids like today have skirts on
Jett did very well for a first time on a 500. And it wasnt dialed in for him..Now that was entertaining.Cross train on different bikes can really help. You get away with something and realise it can be done on the other bike.Didnt larocco train on 125 and 500? Wish i could see a lot more lawrence brothers messing around on 2 strokes.
So damn smooth
I've got 2. My favorite is when you come into the corner in 3rd or 4th and hit the idle jet or how you select your power output with the first 1/4 turn of the throttle and select your vibration level with the next 3/4 😆🤣😂
LOL, That is a dead on description of riding one of these bikes. All torque and no revs. If you twist it harder your might get shaken off the bike!
When he asked if Osho road dual shocks I died .
Aaron builds some beautiful bikes
