Why You Spend Time On Things You Don't Care About

  • How do you know what matters? If someone said what are your about? What are your values? Would be be able to tell them? You probably wouldn’t if you hadn’t already thought about this. It’s not because you don’t have any values. There are things that matter to you. But If you’re like many people, they are not top of mind.
When you haven’t clarified them in your head, it’s easy to spend your time buried in tasks and responsibilities that you don’t really care about. You can unintentionally do a poor job of things because your heart really isn’t in it. Also, when you aren’t anchored by your values, you’re more vulnerable to worry about other people’s opinions and expectations of you. So knowing your values helps you care less about other’s values and opinions. The goal isn’t to be indifferent to other people’s opinions, it’s to have their opinions mean less.
Here are ten common domains that people value.
    Family relationships
    Marriage/romantic relationships
    Parenting
    Friendships/social life
    Career/work
    Education/personal growth
    Recreation/Leisure
    Spirituality
    Community/citizenship
    Health

Really glad you didn't give up because of some broken people who need to make others feel small in order to feel better. Imagine how different your life would be now if you'd let them win. This is inspiring and I realize I need to apply your model of perseverence to my own life!

as I was watching this, I was thinking "man, this woman only getting 162k views on something this useful while some nitwit gets 20 mil for screaming at minecraft." Then you got to the part about your early youtube days and the comments people left. Sometimes I find it absolutely amazing we're still alive as a species.
Anyway - you said you like it when people comment on the usefulness, so I'll leave a note: your videos are great. They're right to the point and I've learned something from each one I've watched. May not be something I can use but I still learned it! One video really changed up how I work and I've been way more productive. You made a comment about putting a timer where you can see it and watch it count down. I thought it was a crazy idea at first and would only make me panic, but I tried it. I work in 4 hour blocks now, and it's done wonders.

What I do is meaningful. However, much like my own life and existence, it is meaningful ONLY to me. If I did not assign meaning, then all would be utterly meaningless. And when it comes to work for the average person, they have to try really hard to convince themselves that what they are doing is meaningful. Very few people have a career that is fulfilling. Most of us have jobs.

Nothing is truly meaningful, and so anything is as meaningful as it’s meaningful to you. Your work can be not fulfilling but meaningful because it gives you means to do other things that do contribute to your meaningful values, e.g. gives you money to travel, or allows you to support your family whom you love and don’t want to see struggle.

Dr. Marks, I am so grateful, that you are here, and sharing yourself, with us. You are my go to source, if I have a mental health question. Then once I have a grasp on what I feel it is, I can better handle it, with my therapist. It cuts down time, and helps me explain my needs, and goals more effectively. You are kind, gentle, accomplished, and very effective at explaining things in ways that helpful. So glad you decided to come back, and be of service. Blessings 🕊 ❤️ 🕯 😇 🙏 💚

In order for me to get there, I got to start taking care of myself and using the time I have now because tomorrow is suggested, not promised.

Thanks ma'am. I am from India where talking about mental health is not a good choice to make. People like us suffer everyday because we don't have people who understand us. What is even more tragic is the fact that taking mental health help is also expensive. I am thankful to you that you are helping us for free🌻
I can't believe that people made mean comments in you. They don't know how helpful you have been to so many people 💃

What's amazing to me is how easily we forget about the things we enjoy, the things that make us happy. We get wrapped up in the routine and day to Day issues that we enter in a type of 'auto mode'. And while we don't realize it, the lack of stimulation puts a strain on our mental health. We realize there's something wrong only when the existencial crisis kicks in...

Thank you Dr. Marks for being brave and fighting through those insecurities yourself to share your knowledge with us! You've helped me so much because now, I know what to ask for to a therapist, and understand myself and others. After getting the right help and support, I am on my way to feeling better about who I am and want to be. I was able find the strength to create mentorship programs to help others. "Empowered women empowers women". Your knowledge empowered me :) Thank you!

Thank you soooo much for continuing to make these videos! I can't believe people can be so rude and hateful, it makes me wanna cry...! Recently I've been thinking more and more that maybe I don't actually want or need to be married, but this video on values has me thinking about the fact that quality time with people I care about is very high up on my list. And after my Mother passed last year I really only have my younger brother and my father with whom I've never really had a strong relationship who sort of gave up on my brother and I for his new wife and her son. I don't have a lot going for myself and now that my brother is married and working, we don't spend a lot of time together anymore even though I live with him. So I feel like the best thing I could do is go back to school, pick music back up as a hobby, keep myself busy and maybe eventually find someone to start a family or even just a life with. Thanks again Dr. Marks, I really appreciate the content!

I wish I had a time machine to go back and fight the trolls. Because Dr. Tracey Marks video have done so much for me and a lot of other people. I've also shared her videos with other people and she has helped me and several others that I know, to not only take other mental health seriously but also helped us and many other people here realize that it's okay to be going through what is happening to you and given us such invaluable tools and information and education to help us all, to not only help ourselves. But our loved ones and others around us as well.
Through her videos a lot of my friends have gotten the help that they needed or the validiton of their conditions.
This is the type of mental education that is so desperately lacking in society. It's not hard to see that what is out there on social media platforms is filled with misinformation and invalidation for people who might really be suffering from mental illnesses.
What Dr. Tracey Marks provides is such a invaluable resource in service of accurate and professional mental health education.
    🌟Thank you Dr. Tracey Marks✨
