Have you been told your baby is small for gestational age by your obstetrician or midwife? Although this can indicate problems, usually it’s nothing to worry about and just needs to be tracked. If you are thinking of taking your health in your own hands, there are a few myths that you should be aware of.
In today's episode of Nourish, prenatal dietitian Melanie McGrice discusses some of the actions that you may be tempted by and whether they are supported by the research.

I'm 40 weeks and baby is measuring 1 month behind. This is my second baby and my first was also a small baby at birth, 6lbs 1oz. I'm not overweight for either pregnancy, I'm petite and eat plenty of healthy foods. Some women just make small babies :)

Does it mean small babies remain small through out their life?
My baby has gone up down from 3rd to 10th centiles since i started having serial scans at 28 weeks. I'm now 36+3 and being induced at 37 due to her having some issues with raised PI on her doppler. None of my other babies have been small, they ranged from 30th to 100th centiles. I have my last doppler/AFL/CTG tomorrow and hopefully if alls well, ill be back on Wednesday to deliver.
I do drink caffeine but i drank it in my other pregnancies too. I eat very well, lots of veg, steak, eggs, healthy fats and nuts, seeds, some fruit etc. This little one is just smaller than her siblings.
At my 32 week ultrasound I was told my baby is a month behind and it’s literally driving me crazy. I’m going to try everything you mentioned on here..
Update my baby is now 1 month and 11 days old and she’s almost 7 pounds😃

@@rahaf4004 i ended up having my baby at 36 weeks she was 4 pounds and 5oz and is now 3 weeks old she lost a few ozs the first few days which is normal and more than a week ago we went for her appointment she’s 4 pounds and 8oz so she went over her birth weight which is a good sign. So I know your baby will be just fine plus ultrasounds are not 100% accurate when it comes to the size of the baby. Best of lucks you you 💕

we are 33 weeks atm, and our baby is below the 1st percentile, my wife does drink only 1 coffee per day and somedays none, but she has alot of fruit and veggies, and eats very healthy.
I am 37 weeks with my 3rd baby, both my boys measured small at 36weeks and I was just told my daughter is also measuring small. But fundal height has been good every week until 36 week, my boys were delivered naturally at 38 weeks and so far all on my stats are on trend with my reproductive history. I just have small babies and I was a small baby myself. My midwives are happy and things have been breezy, but my doctor is getting herself worked up. She is the type who wants to induce if she gets the chance but then you have to wait an exorbitant amount of time to see her for scheduled appointments.
I have no concerns other than having her interfere with my birth when she has no need to. I have a team of midwives on my side though and as I've seen them more over the past 9 months I have a good bond with them.
I’m at 7 weeks and my doc said the fetus is growing much slower than gestational age and does not look promising.

My baby is under 10 percentile in abdominal circumference and my doctor said this has nothing to do with how much or what I’ve been eating... most likely issues with placenta that’s not as efficient . So honestly it’s out of your control. Don’t stress out that you did this to your baby.... 🙄 it’s not related to food . Unless you are highly malnourished like Starved for weeks then maybe. But even if you didn’t have a big appetite throughout your pregnancy as long as you ate everyday even small meals it has nothing to do with iugr. I’ve seen multiple doctors and midwifes they all told me the same. It just happens. Can be placenta can be genetics etc. Nothing to do with eating
Im 34 weeks and my baby is under 3rd percentile. The doctor asked me to count 10 mouvements a day if lower then I'll have to call him. He asked for a 4D scan nect week to see the heart activity if she can stay another week inside the womb and repeat this process untill we reach the 37th week. My doc said that there's an issue with the placenta. Before my pregnancy and because of quarantine i had a very low level of vitamin D.

I know how hard it can be. Baby turned out perfectly healthy! I was induced but was already 40 weeks 5 days. Boy 7 lbs!! And now he is over 99 percentile in all he is super tall and healthy. I will send positive waves to you love

I am 28 weeks now.The baby only weights 998g.The OB told me the baby is too small. I don’t think I have enough carbohydrates intake to control my sugar level.From this week, I try to eat more food with carb to see whether it helps.Finger crossed for the next week ultrasound.May God bless us all to deliver a healthy baby😊

I’m 28 weeks baby is measuring almost 2 weeks smaller ... my vitamin D was just found to be low ... so hopefully taking supplements will help along with eating more fruits and vegetables. Thanks for the video. ❤️

So thankful for this video, my baby is measuring in th 20th percentile, however, I have been drinking lots of coffe and haven't eaten as much veggies as I should and use to. So, I'll be changing that starting now, leaving the coffee is going to be hard, but I'm determined.

@@zuniahmdy4893 hello Zuni! My baby just turned 4mos and is now on the 85th percentile (7.5kg). A week before he was born, my OB said he’d weigh around 6lbs and that is enough for me. His actual birthweight came out to be 6.8lbs at 38weeks and 2days. Don’t worry too much. Thats my takeaway from this experience. Ultrasounds are rough estimates Afterall. I think what helped was focusing my diet on protein. I was also adviced to drink Igco skimmed milk powder at 36weeks. My baby is fully breastfed and is doing well, thank God. ☺️

went in for a dr appt at 34weeks was told I was measuring in af 32weeks. Baby was measuring in the 15th percentile at 35weeks 1day 😭 and usually my family produces large babies 9lbs+.. Im trying to eat a lot in high hopes my baby is gonna grow larger in size 🙃 but he seems highly active and strong so we’ll see..

At 37 weeks and 4 days my baby was measuring in the 6th percentile. At 36 she was measuring around 33 and I’m going to get induced in four days close to 39 weeks wish me luck 💖

I am 35 weeks. I have been sent to a tertiary hospital to see a specialist in maternal fetal medicine. I attended that appt Thursday. Little girl is on the 10th %ile for weight and her ac is on the 4th %ile. I also have GDM. I don’t smoke or drink alcohol or coffee. It’s so hard not to worry
It is hard not to worry, but do the best you can. In the interim keep busy by preparing for your baby to arrive. Get as much sleep as possible. Get out into nature. Prepare nutritious meals. 💜💜

I just hand an ultrasound, my gestacional sac is smaller than it should be for the baby. Gestacional sac matches 5.5 weeks and the baby matches 6.4 weeks

At 28 weeks I was told my baby was measuring 8 percentile in AC , rest was growing normal, scheduled for Doppler this Saturday.. let’s just hope everything goes well.. Due in November 🐣

I had my 28 weeks scan yesterday. I was told my baby is small, her weight is not even a kg yet. I’m so worried I couldn’t sleep. I really don’t know what to do.

I’m 25 weeks pregnant today I went to my appointment today they told me she’s small!!!! but her heart rate is good!!!!! And stuff she’s just very small :( I’ve been worrying about this I was born 2months early and was only 4lbs 1oz so should I be worried they said she had a growth restriction and they are sending me to a high risk doctor on the 13th as well as my glucose test that day as well………prayers that babygirl is healthy and just small :)
Babygirl is measuring in the 7th percentile and she should be at a 10 ! Her kicks and movements are very strong 💪

In the growth scan at 31.1 weeks of gestational age, in the result ait is written that the fetal age is 29.4 weeks and AC is 5th centile likely S/o SGA. Fetal weight is 1.401 kg. What does all the outcomes indicate? Although the doppler scan showed normal reports.
I would suggest speaking to your healthcare professional regarding personal results such as these.

If born at full term, small for gestational age babies grow to be healthy children. However, there may be factors to consider that may impact your child's growth and development. Usually, your doctor will have this conversation with you. I hope this answered your question!

I had my 28 week scan and measurements today and all is good but was told baby’s stomach circumference is small and my pre pregnancy weight is 118 pounds so I am naturally a petite person and was advised to eat 6 small meals

@@drbhargavikandukuri3595 Hello, I am sharing my birth experience: I had the most beautiful birth ever! It wasn’t at the birthing center as I wanted because by the time my midwife sent me back home I was in so much pain and dilating very fast that had to go to hospital instead. Needless to say, I wrote my birth plan on what I wanted on a napkin in the car while my hubby drove and checked in without an OB! It was the smartest choice ever! The nurses and the doctor who delivered my baby that night followed not only my birth plan but told me every step of the way how close I was to delivering without any medical intervention! I actually ended up ditching my OB last minute who told me that I had to take the baby out earlier due to small measurements and the fact she didn’t want me going past 40 weeks. Well guess what?! My baby arrived last due date. I went to 41 weeks and baby was perfectly fine and healthy at 6 pounds. Ladies educate yourself, don’t get bullied about these OB’s who want you to do it on “their time”. All the scans that they did are not 💯 accurate and this was the case with mine and I’m sure many others out there. If the baby has oxygen to the placenta and nutrients are given from placenta to baby and blood flow is good then there is no need to take baby out earlier!

I had my dating scan yesterday.As per my last period I am 6weeks and 3 days pregnant. But my scan result shows 5 weeks and 4 days. Sonographer said nothing to worry, it's because of my irregular period (usually I have irregular periods because of my PCOS and thyroid ) My gp's reaction was bit worrying 😪. I am so tensed. hi I was told by my obstetrician that my baby is small by her gestational age. but at the same my dietitian is controlling my food intake due to gdm. it's like I'm walking between a thin line. If I eat a lot, then my sugar will go up. But if I control my diet, my baby will suffer being too small. I'm already taking vitamin d supplement but it seems like nothing is working for the benefit of my baby. I'm 33 weeks pregnant and my baby weight is only 1300 grams.

Is 28% at 24weeks bad?
There's many different factors to consider so I can't say whether it's bad or good in your case. You'll need to ask your doctor.

I found out on Friday during my growth scan that my baby's abdomen was small, last month, he was at 20%, and now it dropped to 12th %.... I'll be 31 weeks this upcoming Tuesday. When I heard the news, I started tearing up thinking the worse. I have GD and have been taking insulin at nights for about 3 weeks. I wish the doctors would tell me how to make it better, but nothing... I'm trying to increase my food intake and perhaps shorten my walking to 30 mins daily... any updates on yours?

What are your thoughts on taking aspirin during pregnancy for helping the baby to be average weight at birth. I’m pregnant with my 4th and my midwife wants me to take aspirin because all three of my previous pregnancies my baby would be smaller.
There are precautions to take when taking aspirin as high dosages can be harmful. If you are concerned, please raise this with your midwife.
My doctor recommend me aspirin 81 mg from day 1 of last LMP

Hi, I am 12 weeks an diagnosed with empty gestational sac with no heart beat. Gestational sac diameter is 42mm.I don't have bleeding or cramps however, Doctor is suggesting me to do an induced miscarriage. I don't know whether to do it or keep waiting
I also have same problem I m 2 month pregnant but my baby growth is 1-1/2 month..doctor saying that till now no heart beat so you should not extend your pregnancy...but my mother says that it's ohk to have slow growth as ur body is week...

I had my 7 week ultrasound and blood check up today. Hormones level is good but doctor said It looks like baby is 2 days smaller. Then I checked CRL is 0.68 cm.

I was put of restricted diet for gdm but when I followed it they said he's slowing down on growth and his head is 2 percentile

What did you do afterwards? I have hyperemesis gravidarum so my baby was always on the small side (30th percentile) but he was maintaining that growth. Then they found me GDM at 29 weeks and he dropped to 20th percentile by week 32 so I'm worried and I don't know what to do 😞

I viewed my ultrasound (now at 34 wks) and saw that "fetal long bone lagging". Honestly Im scared to death and pray she doesnt have to deal with dwarfism or any defects.

No, there's no immediate need to worry! Babies grow at different rates and some are smaller than average. Measurements are not always accurate either! If there is concern your obstetrician will discuss this with you :)

Jinkz Lopez Dont worry. Everything will be fine . I am on the same stage of the threaten of miscarriage. I had a bit light tan discharge and I went to Echo , it said the baby didn’t grow . Still the same 5 w. Very bad sign. Now my last Echo is on 20th. God blesses us 🙏🏻
I did have week 40+2 days, baby who was size of 32-33 weeks. SGA. Eating did not help :)

folic acid, and fruits!! you can buy milkshake powders that say on the front *folic acid and added vitamins* these are great, and eggs are great for unborn weight gain :) if you &/or partner are short, dont worry too much :)
