I have been consuming minimalism content for over 10 years... Joshua Becker is one of a small few out here on UA-cam that isn't "helping us" with affiliate links to all sorts of items we can buy in order to "help" us achieve a minimalist lifestyle. I have been following this channel for about four years. He to this day, has stayed on topic, not contradicting the message of minimalism with consumerist messages.
The Minimal Mom calls this the silent to do list. I really enjoy your videos that explain psychological principles like this. This was a good reminder not to multitask! Thanks.
Your cadence was refreshing, not like the hurried fast talkers that seem to be getting most of the press these days (and that also make me want to skip the video). Thankful for your inspiring insights here ❤. Blessings from above and within!
Joshua, I have already experienced what you explain here in practice. Only I didn't know the name of this phenomenon. I am a retiree and 69 years old. The tasks in the household and the garden seem endless. But every day I do 3 to 4 tasks that need to be done. That gives a good feeling, even if, for example, something is still very messy.
Great! This motivated me to break down the dreading task "declutter the basement" into small steps. I went there and COMPLETED the step "declutter the top of the sideboard"!!! :)
@sine571 I do the same thing when, after a rainy period, my garden is full of weeds. I only do 1 hour at a time and after about 5 times my garden is back in order.
That was eye opening 😮. Now I understand why I'm overwhelmed, so many unfinished stuff...thank you Joshua, you may have saved my sanity here, no exaggeration. 😇💖👍. Now I know what to do, bless you 😊
The cluttered mind really applies to me. My biggest struggle is cleaning the kitchen after dinner. It really nags at me that it isn't done but I still drag it out all night.
Try cleaning as you go. I have one side of my sink about 1/3 filled with hot soapy water. Many dishes used for prep can be washed right after use and put to drain or dried and out away. After the meal put leftovers away as plates and silverware soak. Once the leftovers if there are any are stored rinse the plates and silverware and load the dishwasher. If no dishwasher time for a new sink of hot suds. Wash cups and glasses first, plates, serving dishes, then silverware which was soaking in the water. Pots and pans last. Wipe counter off counter and stovetop as water drains. Wipe out sink, leave dishcloth and dish towel to dry and put them in the laundry tomorrow. Sounds like a lot, but basically it is a simple clean as you go procesd. Kitchen is clean, sink is shiny and you are done so your mind is clear gor the evening. You can do it!
I have absolutely no energy by the evening. I'm a morning person and I'd much rather bounce out of bed and do the dishes in 10 minutes than spend an hour cleaning the kitchen in the evening.
This is a great video. In addition to the one-minute rule, I remember in one video, you suggested limiting one's to do list to three items per day with the most important being first on the list. These two tips have kept me from going into mental overload many-a-time.
So true. I always wake up with my mind going through a to-do list, and loops over and over before I start my day. Only 20 to 30% gets completed within that day.
Im from Pakistan. You really helped me alot to learn owning less. It is a joy in its self as decluttering encouraged me to share and donate. Now my home got more space and it looks clean and satisfy my mind. Thanks as you are doing a fantastic job 😊
Thanks for the video. But note: The fact that the psychologist was born in the Soviet Union does not make her Russian. She was born in Lithuania to Lithuanian-Jewish parents. By the way, she conducted her experiments and published the results where I live: in Berlin.
These are all great tips, but sometimes the one minute rule drives me crazy. I could walk around my house doing one- minute tasks all day. I really have to prioritize the important tasks personally.
Best video ever!! I didn’t realized I needed to declutter my project load, that’s the thing that’s really been overwhelming. Nailed it, what a weight lifted to know this
This is even worse when you have obsessive tendencies along with perfectionism. Lol. Learning to manage it better now tho. Two things there tho. Being too driven or compelled/burning out with so much “I have to” or “it has to be just so” or a lot more troubled thoughts or “carrying weight” with procrastination. May be harder for women also Bcuz we tend to notice EVERYTHING. Same for detailed people. I had to learn pacing skills and better prioritizing and def “canceling” some of them (Aka letting go. Rethinking what I need to be “responsible”‘for and what all I was taking on that I didn’t need to). Def that was a boundary issue also.
I'm so happy I stopped to watch this right now. This makes so much sense now. I use to see this in myself but now seeing it in hubby I can help him with this video to understand why he's feeling the way he is. Boom!!
Amen, sister. It's difficult to not be able to effect positive change in others. Love him so much anyway but really wish my husband didn't have his hands in so many pots
David Allen came up with the 2 minute rule way back in 2001. I guess that's too long, now. He wrote the book on Getting Things Done, but it upsets people because it's more complicated than can be summarized in a 7 minute video.
I was just thinking yesterday, why do I keep thinking about the piles I have to finish for our neighborhood 'free" day, the consign pile for next week and the donate pile for church. It was making me a little anxious with the "pending" part of it and the paper clutter I need to go through. It's like my mind just wants it done.
@@ineskorver1723 Hi:) I don't know if your answer was directed to me or to the author of the video. My response was to the fact that unfinished projects really keep cluttering the mind, speaking from personal experience.
Not being able to catch up with my laundry is messing my mind up. I don't have a washer & have to haul clothes out to the Laundromat. It's a problem because I have mobility issues & cannot seem to ever catch up.
I really feel for you. I was in this position many years ago. I had a 3 year old and had to carry the laundry about half a mile but bring it back wet because I didn't have enough money for the dryers. I hope your situation improves. ❤
@@gardeninginthedesert , thank you. It will once I'm able to move to a different place. It takes time to find an affordable senior Apt. There are wait lists to get in & unfortunately, you have to wait until someone dies or goes into assisted living
I don't know if money is a factor. There are now really small machines etc. Good for clothes. Then take blankets etc to laundry mat. I find it may be cheaper or the same to do it at home. Blessings.

Ugh so true. The weight of it is like a mountain in my brain. Awful!

Can you delegate some of the tasks if you have family members, and have the tasks rotate? ❤

What if you only write two or three tasks for the day? And then have one or two backup tasks if you have time?

this shed light on a couple things I do that keep my mind weighed down unnecessarily.
Especially decluttering negative objects which are negative Karma!! Thanks 🙏🏿

I can definitely relate to this effect! Now I have a name for it!
Thank you, perfect timing for tonight, I pressed onto what's important!
Goodness, this is so helpful! Thank you
I’m really happy I turned on notifications for you. Your content is always valuable. Thank you!
I appreciate your kind words very much.

Same with me hubby. He has gotten better over the years but still drives me crazy .

Good video. I've been doing the 3 item to-do list and it frees up my mind. I have more free time and free space. Thank you.
I’m suffering from this thanks for the tips, I’m not alone.❤
Is that why I remember the word I got wrong in the spelling bee when I was eleven.

Don't blame me - blame the Zeigarnik effect!
That's mental clutter.
I shouldn't do puzzles. I don't have enough available space.
Oh, please! Lessons for 1st generation Americans. ...as our homes keep increasing in size? Where have you been living since the 1989's?
by "papers to file", you really mean "papers to scan and shred", right? It's 2024!
