At my grocery store, they have 2 for $6 sales, but you don’t actually have to buy 2 to get the deal. You can buy 1 for $3. So it’s worth checking out if your grocery store does the same.
I remember something like that too. In a clearly visible place you could buy 2 items for let's say 6 euros and in the normal place you could find the same item for 3 euros.
Yes: in TN 2 for 6 is really $3 each. But in Florida you have to buy 2 to get the price. Otherwise it is regular price. At Publix grocery stores anyway.
On Amazon I keep a list of things I want and will use, but don't urgently need. When I am buying something I really NEED, I can put them into the cart if I need to get the free shipping.
Spent 30 years of my life spaving 😫 but no more! I’m simplifying my home, my life, and only buying what I really need! Which at this point is pretty much only food! But not dining out… except special occasions! 😊
I realised this trap in the sales tactics a few years ago when I started my journey with minimalism. Whenever I see the above discussed offers, I carefully think whether it would be beneficial in the long run.... regular items like detergent, floor cleaner etc having long shelf life and won't go wasted. In that case I grab the deal and save, not spave!
I've learned to be wary of the "spend more for free shipping" trap. Unless the planned purchase is really close to the threshold and the shipping costs take the total to above that threshold. Then I try to find a small item I will use anyway to meet the threshold and actually save some money.
Thank you for the video and adding the word spaving to my vocabularium! I only use "buy one get two" kind of offers, on things or food I will purchase anyway. Then it is saving instead of spaving.
Since you watch posts like this I’m presuming that you are very knowledgable in the actual cost of an item so you can tell when the sale is truly a bargain and that they haven’t increased the base price in advance. Personally, if I have more of a food item I seem to go through it faster especially snacks so have decreased spending on those items. 😉

Dang almost fell into the trap at Ulta last night....I actually walked out and didn't spend more to get the $10 off $50...I really didnt need anything so i got my $8.99 dry shampoo and walked out...
This is such a trap and so many people even with conservative spending habits fall for it! A new discount store opened up just next to my sister’s work, who is an avid spender. I can’t tell you how many bags of things she has come over with simply because they are at a very discounted price. The first time, I told her that I didn’t need any of it, and please consult me before buying anything. Her Response was, “ but it’s really cheap”. Mine was, “ Add up your receipts. Just because something is on sale, doesn’t mean you need it!”
Been spotting the annoying "Spaving" everywhere. I'm so glad you brought it up here. I love bulk purchases and had had to find a balance. Very appreciated. ❤
Very legitimate video with superb financial advice. I'm guilty of being tricked into overspending to save money. I didn't realise this was happening lol .. An example would be: buy 1 loaf of bread, and it's $4. Or, buy 2 loaves for $6. End result.... I ate 1 loaf of bread within the 2wk expiry date, and now have 1 whole loaf of bread in the freezer. My freezer is full now 😆 ($5 tub of ice cream, $10 pkgs of progress etc etc etc)
Your video was followed in my feed by a Temu ad. I had to laugh. I have avoided that rabbit hole for certain! Tks for today's lesson. Good information as always.
When it comes to bulk purchases you a l so might take time to think about how having hoards of material ie. Tp, tissues, paper towels...affects how you use those items. When you know there is a vast stockpile are you more careless in your usage? We found that to be true.
Really great topic Joshua. I live in Greece and the supermarkets here have spaving but to a much lesser extent. What they do have mostly is discounts on products. So, you might have a cheaper price. What I do is buy the product with the discount even though I may have to switch brand. This doesn't bother me at all. Product quality is basically the same. I really enjoyed your video. Thank you. ❤
Thanks for covering this topic now. With inflation as it is, I have been sucked in a few time recently. Definitely played on my anxiety - as a retiree - of static income and rising prices.
Waterstones book shop in uk have 'buy two books get third free'. Many times one book has caught my eye, then in looking to find two others I find 5 books I want and end up getting 6! Spaving.
Loll the clip about the " buy 5 scam" and lemons. Buying 1 lemon was $1, buying 5 was $2. Joke is on me. I wanted a lemon for lightly flavoured lemon water--- only ended up using 2.... the other 3 lemons went moldy before i used them 😢
I am happy to note that this year so far I made just one purchase n I don't regret it. I used to be a spaver. When I look at my past orders, I cringe. Thanks for this timely video. Nowadays I don't use rewards unless it's something I would be purchasing anyway like recharging my phone or paying the electricity bill. I keep things on my cart n only buy after I can get the shipping free so that has led to lesser purchases in the same period as what used to be years before. I also use the subscribe and save in such a way as to avail of the discount n buy less than before. I only buy non perishable items on this platform like detergent, handwash.
"I keep things on my cart n only buy after I can get the shipping free so that has led to lesser purchases in the same period" Do you ever look at things in your cart and think, WTF WAS I THINKING? And delete it?
My take on bulk purchasing is that it eliminates my having to hit the retail stores more often to restock and lessens my 'additional want's shopping' temptations. Plus I save on gas, time, and more time for adventures, hiking, etc. I being a minimalist have one closet that only keeps bulk items stored. Was an empty closet prior.
I just went to the store, my goal was to buy some Sprite for my husband. They had 7up (a case of 12) for $7.99 or they had Sprite buy 2 get one free for $10.49 each. My husband only wanted one case of lemon lime soda. If I got the buy 2 get 1 free deal on the Sprite I would have three times the amount of soda I actually wanted, and I would have spent $13 more than I was intending on doing. The deal is ONLY any good if you always intended to 1) buy Sprite brand (not 7up) and 2) needed two cases of it. I went for one case of 7up.
So this was probably not the ethical thing to do 😳 but years ago I got a notification from a retailer saying that if I bought any 2 pairs of shoes I would get 25% off. I needed a pair of leather ankle boots and I knew that i liked the shoes from that brand, so I bought the boots i wanted and an inexpensive pair of mens shoes and got the 25% discount 😊. A few days later i returned the men's shoes that were not needed, I definitely used the system to my advantage and I was prepared to return my boots or pay back the discount difference, but the store didn't ask for it. They are very comfortable boots and good quality 😊 so I definitely got a good deal.
CVS is good at that. Lol. The infamous “rebates.” But you can still save if you’re in it for more than a minute and really need the stuff (for me occasionally it’s just a few consumables). I need to take notes on this about a house purchase. Lol. But then again picking quality over cheap and paying a bit more isn’t the same as “spaving.” But I am def sticking to my guns about the square footage. No. I do not want to go over 1000 and I don’t need a third bedroom or second bath. Quality over quantity. Sure you can get more bang for your Buck going bigger but then how much is 30 years of overhead for that bigger house? How much tax and upkeep for that bigger yard? I don’t want that. Idk. Worst spaver encourager on the planet…..TEMU? 😂😂
Thank you for the clarification and put a name to it. I truly hate cupones. You get to the register and never work because of what you are saying. They want you to buy more than what you need it. On your PowerPoint consider other font background color combination. The letters get lost. Tks
I 95%never do that, because I think: I can save the most by not buying it😅. Sometimes it makes sense to buy more, but before you buy you have to always check if it really is so- like you said: Do the maths👍
Its a balance. The big bag of pet food is less per pound than the smaller ones. One blogger uses spavings for actual money saved like car plus home insurance discount.
I came to know Christ in jail in 2013 by reading a book, "Overcoming spiritual blindness" by James P. Gills MD. The veil was taken off my eyes. Heaven came through for me in my finances too, getting $35,500 monthly. I can support God's work and give back to my community. God is more than enough!
Occasionally I'll see two different size bottles or packages of a product, both at their regular price, and the smaller item will cost less per ounce than the larger one! I don't know if that is intentional or just an oversight, but it pays to check and see if you are actually saving by buying the larger item.
I’m so fed up with Costco bugging me everytime I shop to upgrade my membership to then get more back on my yearly return. I don’t want to pay more with the chance of getting more.
It is worth it though in some times like expensive contact solutions. I have 4 bc I had 2 coupons for totaling $9 off that the eye Dr gave me. And then Costco had a sale. So now I am set for 6 months and saved approx $20. They don’t expire for years and even then you can still use them.
