The good thing about Frank Zappa is the fact that he recorded and archived everything. And so we can gradually learn more and more about him, hear more and more, see more and more. That is wonderful. Born in 1950, I was a fan of his from the very beginning. His "promoter" in my circle of friends.

I just read he was "not the most technical" player as if this was something a guitarist could be judged by. He could take you to places with his solos and honestly I can't think of another guitarist that could pull that off. ZAPPA 4Ever!

I hope younger generations are able to hear, absorb and appreciate his music. When I started out as a drummer I was all about John Bonham, Ginger Baker and Neil Peart. Then I heard 'Montana.' It opened an entirely different part of my mind. After that I couldn't get enough Zappa. Still my favorite musician, composer and overall life influence. I played 'Muffin Man' for my son when he was five years old. Up until the solo he kept giving me these strange looks as if to say "my dad is weird." As soon as the solo started he started air guitaring and jumping off the couch, running around. He was totally sucked into the moment and he got it. Proudest moment of my life.

Zappa was the weirdest coolest and most badass songwriter ever, and he was a genius guitarist who played with the cunning of the insane. His true test of greatness is, you can start a Zappa jam with any song he ever did, it will be great and you don't give a fuck how long it lasts, it always ends too soon. Truly, the ONLY artist I never get tired of and who always amazes me with his effortless musical sophistication masquerading as deranged lunacy.

I’ve heard people say he’s a shit guitarist and I couldn’t agree less with them. No Zappa’s not a shredder like Vai or Malmsteen are, but there’s a fantastic sort of style to his guitar melodies, almost as if the guitar’s trying to tell you something when he’s playing a solo.

I don't think you should rude to people who don't like Frank's music. It is not everyone's taste. For example, it does get you emotionally, it's very cerebral music, as many of these comments show. They respond to it mentally, not emotionally.

@@paulinebutcherbird It’s very understandable why people didn’t like his music, but it was meant to be stupid and a bit wacky in sound. People respond to the humour in it very emotionally, a lot of people found it genuinely funny, some people found it just really stupid, which is perfectly understandable, Zappa was an oddball. But his talent and prowess deserves respect.

I ain't one to typically comment on anything, but this is a worthy exception. Unbelievable piece of music!!! Band are as tight as you like. The groove (for any drummers) sits right in the pocket and young Steve Vai is impeccable. You can't help but admire this group of musicians, as its evident they are all major league. In a world where we are bombarded with commercial trash, Frank Zappa provides a stunning escape. The classical music elements and influence is definitely apparent. So effing glad I got into this. It takes quite the jump into the unknown at points but ultimately a combination of first class musicianship and added humour is quite enlightening indeed.

What's so special about it? What are the classical music elements and if there are any, do they make this piece better or more stunning?

    • @adambell3241
      @adambell3241 5 років тому +19

Well, the percussive elements in many respects. Fanfare like fills, with keyboard and synths mimicking brass sections. Orchestral sounding at times. The complexity and rhythmically ‘free’ style of Franks solo playing. This is a song which has many varieties. Throughout all the live albums, the band have usually mixed it up and push the boundaries every time. It says a lot about a band, who were never afraid to experiment with each tune, and throw it a different theme and rhythm altogether. Frank was hugely influenced by the likes of Stravinsky and Webern.

Frank and some of the other "Mothers" came and sat in the audience they all wore the plastic glasses with the rubber noses. Frank had on his shirt that said Pipco. I don't know what it meant but he wore it on his "Lumpy Gravy" album.
Just before the show I was walking around the Arena. I saw an open door with a couple of cops standing nearby I walked in the door and Frank was sitting there. I wanted to ask him if I could join the band. I said "Fra..." and one cop had one arm the other the other. They did not toss me but told me to stay away from that room.

    Flies all green and buzzin'
    In this dungeon of despair
Prisoners grumble and piss their clothes
    And scratch their matted hair
    A tiny light from a window-hole
    A hundred yards away
Is all they ever get to know
About the regular light in the day
And it stinks so bad the stones been chokin'
    Weepin' greenish drops
In the room where the giant fire puffer works
    And the torture never stops
    The torture never stops
Slime and rot and rats and snot and
    Vomit on the floor
    Fifty hill billy soldiers man
Holdin' spears by the iron door
Knives and spikes and guns and the likes
    Of every tool of pain
And a sinister midget with a bucket and a mop
Where the blood goes down the drain
And it stinks so bad, the stones been chokin'
    Weepin' greenish drops
    In the room where
    The giant fire puffer works
    And the torture never stops
    The torture never stops,
    The torture
    The torture
    The torture never stops
    Flies all green and buzzin'
    In this dungeon of despair
An evil prince eats a steamin' pig
In a chamber right near there
He eats the snouts and the trotters first
The loins and the groins are soon dispersed
His carvin' style is well rehearsed
    He stands and shouts
    All men be cursed (4x)
And disagree, hell no one durst
He's the best of cause of all the worst
    Some wrong been done
    He done it first
And he stinks so bad his bones been chokin'
    Weepin' greenish drops
In the light of the iron sausage
    Where the torture never stops
    The torture never stops
    The torture
    The torture
    The torture never stops
    Flies all green and buzzin'
    In the dungeon of despair
    Who are all those people
That he's locked away down there
    Are they crazy
    Are they sainted
    Are they zeros someone painted
    That had never been explained
Since at first it was created
But a dungeon like a sin
    Requires not much lockin' in
    Of everything thats ever been
    Look at her
    Look at him
Thats whats the deal we're dealin in
Thats whats the deal we're dealin in

Its from the 1981 Halloween Concert at the NYC Palladium. The audio of all those concerts was released last month in the HALLOWEEN '81 box. All excellent official releases.

Many thanks for having this to share with us!! I was weened on the Immortal Frank Zappa, and have always reveled in his and his band's musical genius. While not as commercially popular as others of his songs, as an elder, The Torture Never Stops, transcends time and rings so painfully clear as to make reality almost bearable. The torture never stops, but I use this cut to at least, keep it at bay and retain some semblance of sanity. Bravo!!
