It seems they didn't "translate" the gibberish itself, which is a bit baffling. Adding a final -o, -a or -e to the fake words would have made it work much better. In the original, Joey's gibberish didn't really sound French at all, of course, but there was some very superficial similarity in terms of phonology and intonation, which is what made the joke. Then again, the Spanish they used for Phoebe was atrocious, so maybe the French-language team didn't know any better.

Donc les sous-titres anglaises sont justement un remnant de la version originale. Now I know why they are there. I've just watched the original American version, and there the subtitles are there to translate what Phoebe is saying in French. So those English subtitles are just a remnant from the original version.
