Thanks for having me! It was great fun!
@Lyleworkman it was an absolute pleasure having you on! I can't wait to have you on again!!
Congrats Lyle! Exceptional work! I love the soundtrack 💙
Yes!!! Can we talk about the Scott Pilgrim Soundtrack next????
Great call. Could do a whole show just on the Beck and Metric. (Clash at Demonhead)
Yes yes yes!
Yesssss
Now you know how to contact Bootsy and get him on the show....
That would be amazing! Fingers crossed
@@shanecabbage2187 bootsy does tons of shit like this, ends up on so many peoples records
Lyle's work on the first Frank Black and the Catholics record is some of my FAVORITE guitar work on ANY album of all time! He would forever be in my personal pantheon just for that, but when I found out that he did the soundtrack to this movie, which was HUGE for me and my friends (I was 17 when the movie came out; literally perfect for me), it basically cemented Lyle as one of my favorite musicians ever. What a legend!!!
it's an easy choice but I think you guys would CRUSH a breakdown on Cowboy Bebop
and also Khruangbin. Love Khruangbin. it's crazy how much groove and feel they get from a 3 piece band
I second this! Yoko Kanno as a composer is beloved in the anime industry and changed the landscape. If you haven't heard her tracks from Darker than Black, it's one of her best works. Specifically, 'Darker Than Black Track 13 - Kuro' underrated track as well as 'Moon · Gabriela Robin · Yoko Kanno Turn a Gundam Original Motion Picture Soundtrack Ⅰ'. So much drama, so much atmosphere and somehow hopefully sorrowful...
I saw bootsy live once and it was amazing. but now can we talk about Curtis Mayfield making one of the best albums and funkiest most soulful albums ever made for one of the worst movies ever made, Superfly?
Rush by seatbelts on the tv show cowboy bebop is my soundtrack choice , if you haven’t heard I highly recommend
Nice! Cowboy Bebop is still very much appreciated, even today. You've reminded me of the 'big brass' title score to Gunsmith Cats too. I have it on Laserdisc and the PCM digital sound allows for some serious amplification!
Nowhere near as technical as Rush by Seat Belts; but I think too many Manga soundtracks slipped under the radar for too long.
It's great to see them being appreciated thirty-ish years later. 👌😎
Nothing can top Cowboy Bebop (98') OST, that's for sure.
Bro I can't listen to Hide and Seek without bursting out laughing remembering the SNL skit.
I was surprised to hear Moby's "god moving over the face of the waters" playing as the credits rolled for the movie Heat (1995).
That's a complicated and beautiful piece of music.
Yessssirrrrr ,love the plaque ,congratulations 🙏🙏🎉🎊 love ta see it, it’s only up from here
Please have Lyle back- he is such a humongous talent and he has such humility! His playing with Todd Rundgren and on the Bourgeois/Tagg debut puts him in a league with few other peers. I know that he and Jesse Gress (who you should also have on your show!) are both big Allan Holdsworth acolytes/early transcribers of his work, and I've always wanted to hear more about that side of their musical experience.
This was f***ing EYE OPENING. By Far my most favorite episode that you guys have made. And I've seen like 90 percent of all of your stuff. Amazing. Thanks y'all!
Please talk about the music of Walk Hard! That soundtrack is amazing! I think you guys already know some of the songwriters? Beautiful Ride and Have you heard the news (Dewey Cox Died) are some of my favorites.
The Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind soundtrack is extremely underrated. The modal interchange in the main theme is so interesting.
After listening to Bootsy's solo a few times, I'm hearing an envelope filter, some sort of fuzz, and possibly an octave divider... although the fuzz might be giving out the square waves usually associated with the octave divider. No matter what he's using, it's still an awesome sound.
Oh, and by the way... I just looked at the hashtags at the top of this page and saw "Boosty"??? LOL
This show puts me in a good mood. I love watching people who get excited about music like this and teach me some cool stuff about music at the same time!
Bootsy....funk personified.
Lyle's last solo album was great - check it out.
I had no idea what to expect but the first track was a trip. Thanks for the recommendation.
What he said at 30:50 is funny because I remember playing the song ‘Serpentine Fire’ by Earth wind & fire to my friends at school, and one of them said “that sounds like that song from Superbad” and then they changed it to the Superbad song instead (which I now find out was likely a legal workaround inspired by EWF 😂)
Amazing soundtrack! Lot of love from Italy guys
Congrats on the plaque! Love this channel, it’s one of the few things I can proudly say I’ve been here since the first video had
Incredible inside look at how movie music is done. Very interesting and I hung on every word. Great video guys. They just keep getting better. Nevermind the inevitable plateau. You're already so high (good), we're all hooked for the duration. Thanks
Yes!
Thanks guys for all of your amazing interviews and breakdowns. You definitely gained a sub!
Shame on me for not paying such needed attention to the score and soundtrack of this film. Fortunately, it has been a good hand's worth of years since I've seen it. Now I just need to get my date on board.
The end? is such a beautiful piece. LOVE IT since min 1
Thank you for documenting this historic moment in funk history! Beautiful ❤️
Congrats on the plaque guys, love your channel and hearing you obsess over every little detail that makes music so special! Speaking of, I think *Hiatus Kaiyote* would make a phenomenal next subject, their remixed album just dropped and it's in-sane 🤯 you're doing an amazing job, keep it up!
This is f-ing brilliant! Lyle did an absolutely amazing job there!
And he seems to be such a nice guy too
Wow. Love the work of Lyle!! Thanks guys!!!
*Love* this behind the scenes stuff, and would love to hear more. And I immediately laughed at Lyle's anecdote about the drummer playing swing vs. straight feel -- been there! 😊
It's fascinating listening to Lyle talk about this part of the music industry that we rarely get to see. Thanks
Great stuff! The behind the scenes stories are so great.
OMG! I was always in love with the sountrack of SUPER BAD!
It was a real pleasure to watch this episode! Thanks guys.
Another great education and demonstration of the power of artistry and musicianship!!
I just finished reading “Dilla Time”, by Dan Charnas, examining the style and rhythmic time created by J Dilla. I’d love to see your take on his approach to production and influence of his style. Keep it coming!
The moment at 26:10 is the distilled image of how Jack is reacting to something exciting in comparison to Ryan. You guys are delightful :D
‘Oooh, Fingerfunkin’ baby!’ Ha ha!!! Love Bootsy!
When I saw 1st saw Superbad as soon as the score came on I was like is this old or new? I had to look it up and was blown away seeing the credits! 😮
You guys are the best!! KEEP THIS UP!! ❤️❤️
I completely missed this movie and had no idea that it had such a good soundtrack. Some of the parts played here reminded me of the perfection that is the Isaac Hayes soundtrack to Shaft. I got hooked on that while in college in the 90s. The whole thing start to finish is a masterpiece. I may need to find the Superbad soundtrack and give the whole thing a listen.
That 26:04 sounds dead on something The Beatles would do If they were still playing. That's Sgt Pepper level shit right there.
I am the Walrus typa strings
reminds me more of Pet Sounds
Can you guys do a breakdown of Marvel’s Black Panther movie soundtracks? I feel Ludwig Göransson’s use of traditional African drums, horns, and climactic direction is just so unique. Easily one of my favorite movie scores ever made. (Sorry Hans)
Keefus shoutout! That name takes me back to funky Nutmeg music scene 90s Los Angeles! Weapon of Choice at the Dragonfly… so many great memories.
This was an absolute pleasure to watch! Just wanted to let the group know that Lyle is as nice a guy IRL as he appears to be in this video. As a teen, I spent a lot of time at a guitar shop in the San Jose, CA area and every now and again Lyle would pop by for some guitar work. It was a BIG DEAL when Lyle was there, and the dudes who ran the place held him in high respect, which was rare for that hard-to-impress crew. I remember one episode when Lyle claimed his blonde Hamer was better than an old pre-CBS Strat, which caused a brief moment of tension between him and the owner ha. Keep in mind, this is WAY before he played with Sting or Beck, and I think he had just joined Jellyfish. For a while I referred to him as "the guy from Bourgeoise Tagg." As a side note, I don't think he gets enough credit for his guitar work on Frank Black's Teenager of the Year (perhaps because it's been overshadowed by his other career accomplishments), but it's GREAT, especially his lead lines on Superbound.
I've run into him a few times in the past couple decades and he's always affable and easy to talk to. In addition to his awesome soundtrack work, his solo albums are fantastic and showcase the range of his guitar skills more so than any of his other recordings. Check out his recent "Uncommon Measures" and "Purple Passages." Thx again for doing this video. So great to see someone like Lyle get much deserved props!
Love the show. Lyle Workman has been a favorite since Bourgeois Tagg released "I Don't Mind At All'" Around 1987.
Holy shit.! I have to rewatch Superbad now
Great stuff! Now I gotta go watch the movie again
MADE is a rediculously funny and brilliant film. Great score too! This guy has been a part of some of the best comedic stuff out there.
15:30 that's just an epic little moment. Love this. And now I know, you should always listen to Bootsy, baby!
Hell yes dude Eternal sunshine is my favorite freaking movie, Jim Carry is so good. And as far as comedy dude, Forgetting Sara Marshall and Get Him to the Greek are my favorites! You should have him back on and talk about get him to the greek!!
Jon Favreau's Made is great! The DVD has extra music cues.
Also, Christopher Doyle is the cinematographer.
I would recommend to react to kalank it's a bollywood song and it has very wild instrumentation, vocal and mixing . Keep up the great work we are enjoying it
Great episode, great show! As fun as it's insightful!
easily one of the best channels around
Awesome, thanks!
Funky Nassau with Erykah Badu and the Blues Brothers would have been my soundtrack pick.❤
Oh my god whats the name of the song with the string cue???? Driving me crazy! Its so amazing
Early bird! Would love an ep about the australian pop-and-plunderphonics-act The Avalanches. Since I Left You is an absolute masterpiece.
Insane. Scored several series and movies myself and learnt so much from this!
IMO: MUCH Better than the whole MasterClass with Zimmer. You guys ask questions… Loved the “potential for Cheese”-pitfall remark!
Favourite movie song EVER for me is "Dont you forget about me". Period.
You reminded me of an old favourite when you mentione Rick James - Superfreak! Also, how far back do you want to go with movie soundtracks? I have always loved Shaft by Isaac Hayes.
That Imogen Heap song will always be that song from that SNL sketch
Would love you guys to talk about the music from Walk Hard
"We'll tune it in post" (29:17) 😆
Fascinating interview. But, speaking of funk, I would love to hear your analysis of "Do That Stuff" (Parliament). Of course, since you now know how to contact Bootsy...
Hey, found myself falling in love with the 4-3-6 chord progression in Japanese Pop. It's also used in Video Game music from Nintendo & Sega as well as Modern Anime themes.
Could you do a J-Pop episode with focus on how it's different than Western music?
"Hey, McLovin!"
"Oh my god, it's in..." 🤣
@@subliminalvibes lol!
Test Drive by John Powell from How To Train Your Dragon is one of my top movie songs. But y'all need to break into some video game soundtracks. Check out the Jet Set Radio OST from Hideki Naganuma and Co along with the Persona game soundtracks by Shoji Meguro. Oh and the Metal Gear Rising soundtrack by Jamie Christopherson.
I hope this results in bootsy on a scary pockets song some day.
inside man main theme...thats a killer movie song
I love watching y'all, could you do a react video to They Might be Giants? I feel like they are super underrated.
For Movie Songs: "The Prince Of Egypt" (1998), cause it's Passover time.
For that Dixieland Swing revival sound: How about, some Squirrel Nut Zippers?
For Band Dynamics: Danny Elfman, of Oingo Boingo, on transitioning from a Street Theatre Troupe, to a Rock group, to his newer collabs, and wouldn't hurt, to ask about some TV/Film scores, too.
I love how it sounds like they were kinda just fucking with Lyle the whole time lol
The Mutron III pedal is central in Bootsy’s bass sound
FONKin' inSIGHTful, bay-uh-bay! :D 🎶🎶🎶
Mooger Fooger filter! Hah!
I know, Thundercat has used that one.
Yo
I got a curveball for you guys to break down!
Have you guys heard of Honey Harper? He has an album called Starmaker he does this kind of dreamy space cowboy country thing. But it's so hearbreaking, so genuine, so tasteful. The record is incredibily well written. Think you guys might get a kick out of it.
Wow… I thought that the songs were found by some genius music supervisor who discovered independent forgotten 70s bands 😅 nope the genius is the composer! Congrats! Amazing.
I need yall to react to Dijon!!
Why that record is not on Spotify?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
Glad to see ian from the chipmunks reach his dreams
You guys should do one on Mark Ronson and some of his stuff and ability
Bootsie, has done a Jimi Hendrix inspired voice, for most of his career.
How do you not know that's Bootsy on vocals?
Especially when they've done ton of silk sonic stuff and Bootsy is on that album too. Might be that this one was recorded way before but still Bootsy is Bootsy.
Mazel Tov!
last one sound like an Jeff Lynne arrangement
can you guys react to Chelsea Rogers by Prince?
Off the funk trail somewhat, but could you please react and analyze some Steely Dan songs? I am not a musician, but went through a phase where I dove into some music theory and…. Well that’s all I have to say about that🤷🏻♀️
chees...es, so grate 😊
20:38
RHCP SEGMENT PLEASE
pleasepleaseplease! Snarky Puppy!
killer
GET SANTAOLALLA!
do the cowboy bebop sound track please!!
Haven't watched the video yet, but if the answer isn't the "Superfly" soundtrack by Curtis Mayfield, then you're wrong.
Week 2 of asking y’all to listen to Bill Wurtz and his weird, weird music
Charles Cornell has already smashed that!
Pity the soundtrack isn't on tidal, qobuz or deemix... :(
What's that smell?
Not funky enuf for me....too straight funky and not enough syncopation funky....but I still like it
Lyle seemed to have contradicted himself in the end with his account of the screening and how great the movie is when, at the top of the interview, he said Superbad wasn’t his choice among the 3 movies going to be made, and wanting to put the bad together only because the title of the movie was a James Brown song.
The anti-climactic end to this episode drove that home. Lyle was plain capping in the end and they caught it so that they didn’t even ask Lyle to sign the wall!
Maybe he'll sign the wall in another episode. They seem to do more than one episode with each guest.
Not really: you should lay off whatever's making you so paranoid!
Dear Step, first came the meeting about three films I knew nothing about, only knowing I wanted the film Judd was to direct because we had done 40 Year Old Virgin together. instead, I was given Superbad. After that I saw the screening and that's when I knew what a gem it was. And by the way, I signed the wall on another episode (sorry to disappoint). Peace.
Superfly soundtrack better
