OP-1 Hidden Vocoder?

- Two years ago, I was featured on a podcast called Small Operations with a one minute performance with my Op-1. @fldpln if you’re out there, just know there is a smallops-shaped hole in all of our hearts right now.
On the podcast, I was able to figure out how to use the OP-1 as a vocoder, and I’ve been meaning to make a tutorial on it ever since.
It all has to do with the LFO of the OP-1. There's a number of different LFO types that you can choose from including one called element. The element LFO uses the built-in microphone or a line-in signal to modulate whatever part of the sound you set it to, including volume and pitch. So I figured I could sing into the element LFO and use that to modulate the volume and pitch of the sound I was playing.
Thank you so much for joining me here on ShinesTV!

OP-1 has vocoder as of today so enjoy!
I’ve listened thru small operations like 3 times now, I miss it so much!
Same here Dead0Grateful- really miss the interviews and lofi bg music!!
I was also featured on that podcast and remembered that your video blew me away ... so this is dope
Thank you so much Chris!!! Which episode were you on? I have to go back and check that one out again!
You have unlocked new powers for all of us! Thank you im about to go do this
Yeeess!! Thank you Whyzman!! Excited to hear what you do with it!!
Nice video! when i accidentally discovered that i can use LFO to modulate my voice like this pitch-shifting vocody-thingy i was suprised that there is sill a lot things to explore on the OP-1
10 years old, and still amazing
Thanks so much!! Seriously, the amount of stuff this tiny synth can do continues to amaze me.
Very rad, thanks for sharing this info broski!
Thanks so much dude!!
Cool!
with the last firmware update you get a real vocoder synth now for the OP1f ;-)
OP-1 really is the Skyrim of synths
Lol it truly is! Every time I go back to it I find out something new! Thanks for the sub and support!!
so cool! I'll have to find a mic that works and try this out myself.
Thank you!! Any mic that has it's own battery power will do great- I actually used my Zoom H2n recorder as a mic for it once and it worked great!
great!
thanks!!
wow, i will try
Thanks so much Emilz!! Your stuff is awesome btw!! Subbed!
@@ShinesTV so kind! 😉
very cool work mate! question: what microphone are you using throughout the video?
Thanks so much!! I'm using the Takstar SGC-598 shotgun mic hooked up to the Zoom H2n - it's a decent mic setup! The Zoom has a built-in compressor/limiter which comes in handy for voiceovers.
@@ShinesTV Nice, I have a zoom H5, should take a look at good vocal/voice microphones for that one!
That sounds terrible and I LOVE IT
what's better than a vocoder? a hidden vocoder🎉
Lol indeed!! Thanks for the support CNTR RNDM!!
Odd Question but What does CWO stand for ?
Hey Quinoa! I think it actually stands for Cow, but is misspelled on purpose to express the sheer craziness that is this filter!
@@ShinesTV I've seen a video from cuckoo using cwo to play with the voice, do you think it's possible to have both your LFO and the cwo to do vocoder? Like if you use your LFO for your engine, and use cwo in the 4-track LFO slot?
I'll test later anyway but I'm lazy
really cool video! but it's not a vocoder, right? you kinda say in the video and description, it's more of a modulation. Vocoder shifts your pitch to the note you play on the keyboard
That's correct! A true vocoder has a ton more processing, and this just uses one sound source to modulate the carrier tone.
You clearly don't know what a vocoder is
It splits the incoming audio-your voice aka the modulator into separate frequency bands ( bandpass filters ) which then goes into an envelope follower
The carrier ( synth signal ) is also split into corresponding frequency bands and the output of each of these bands is controlled by the envelope follower .
So what your saying is you didn’t like the video?
