Coming back to this two years later, when Her Majesty has died, and Rolf Harris is, apparently, desperately ill at 92, I'm left with a feeling of total sadness: it was a good portrait - far better than so many others; he was so pleased and so honoured to have the chance to paint her; and since then - total disgrace for him. I suppose he deserved it; I can't judge the sins of others, having enough of my own; but to dismiss him, to forget him, to cast him into nothingness - just isn't right. He WAS a talented artist - he was also a fallible man, and even at times a wicked one, if judged by standards he just didn't seem to understand. But there was far more to him than his crime, or crimes - he doesn't deserve to be air-brushed from history.
Agreed and his wife and daughter his wife of 62 years dying of dementia and his poor daughter and son about to bury two parents and grandparents at the same time is awful for them ROLF will still be my childhood artist like Tony Hart was etc
Yes, now that he's died there's something undeniably tragic and pathetic about it all. If he'd behaved himself and constrained his urges, his death would be big news and we'd be celebrating his life. As it is, most people are just shrugging and saying 'good riddance'.
I remember him slapping out full paintings in less than 5 minutes but he's taking ages here and he's made her look weird. It's the nearest thing to an interview with the Queen but what a shame it had to be with Rolph Harris!
I noticed how she touched her ring at some point. I heard it is a signal for her entourage that means she had enough of a certain situation, or conversation.
What a beautiful gesture from the queen to have her portrait taken from her room for Rolf to inspect.. these are the things people may overlook..she was a truly lovely woman.
I'd like to agree... but if she wasn't the Queen, she wouldn't be picked out of a crowd as anything spectacular, IMO. Very pretty and nice person... would live her life well and honourably, but not at all an "exceptionally lovely lady." When she was younger and in full regalia at state affairs she looked like a movie star - she was stunning... but almost anyone would stop the show when all dolled up by dressers and dripping with diamonds. It was her dedication to duty and to her promise to serve that is exceptional. We have no way of knowing how many days she got out of bed feeling like hell and still went out smiling and shaking hands until her arms ached. She's getting the respect now that she's always shown to others. Compare her fundamental qualities to the likes of Donald Trump. They couldn't be farther apart on the scale of human decency..
He was a huge inspiration for me, the reason I got into painting 🎨. It was a huge shock hearing on the news when he was charged for sexual offences. I couldn’t believe it, under the soft gentle outside he was a very dark person. I still find it hard, I know what he did was disgusting his talent was short lived by his actions
Yes it was dark & shocking. He did much good too 'we all loved him as kids'. He was a performer & a showman so the public image is a show. That's the guy we all saw. I met him in the early 2000's after I'd become friends with a guy that I traveled in India with. Upon my return he invited me to dinner at Rolf's house as he lived in a wing of the house. I won't go into all but basically Rolf had taken him in & included him as family as he had had a bad childhood. It was great to see them do a double act at parties. They had met years before at a charity event as both played the Digirido.
Over here in America, the only thing that we know about Rolf is his song ‘Tie me Kangaroo Down Sport’…at least that’s all I knew about him until very recently. It seems to me that Harris got caught up in operation Yewtree… again, I knew nothing of this, Jimmy Saville, or Gary Glitter, but would it be incorrect of me to ask that Harris is not as evil as Saville and Glitter?
I like his painting and how he approaches the work. The same method I was taught in my final years at art school. This portrait has a wonderful freshness and immediacy. Like it very much.
i think that woman has lost all warmth and uncontrolled deeper emotions being over 60 years in that position. cold and uninterested she seems to be. and resigned emotionally.
Her Majesty is just like that she needs to remain proper infront of cameras ive met the queen and i know others who have she is good at reading people if you don't care too much about the fact she's the queen she will relax a bit and be herself if you're shitting your pants that you're meeting the Queen she will act proper because she doesn't want to spoil the illusion for you
What a lovely presence she is. Her smile is disarming, her face beautifully animated. He really missed the corners of the smile, which are the best parts of it. Otherwise, she was the essence of grace. I wish she'd talked some more. She has a wicked sense of humor. She was ill, and still showed up! Glad I saw this. Through the years, she's been vilified and demeaned, yet she's weathered it all and come out of it as the classy lady she is.
She's a pro, no doubt. But considering what's happening in England, the world nearly, with the inevitable forced vaccinations and NWO agenda (own nothing and be happy), which she absolutely KNEW would happen perhaps since the Americans helped defeat Hitler. This is not a good person and allowed, maybe encouraged, totalitarianism on her British Commonwealth subjects.
I hope he realizes what a privilege it was to have such access to her like that, up close, personal, relaxed small talk. The way she delivered that line, "... after I succeeded and got into her safe..."
Yes, it's uncomfortable because we now know what Rolf Harris turned out to be. But listening to the Queen speak here is still fascinating, and so far nobody has made any bad claims towards her. So imo this interview can still be watched for what it is becuase it's the Queen that makes it interesting, not Pedo Rolf.
Have none of you considered this?. Perhaps she enjoyed a conversation with somebody who was not sucking up to her and grovelling . He kept it very casual and she did seem very relaxed and not at all offended that he was so informal with her.
It’s a real shame Rolf threw everything away for his own sexual gratification. He’s almost hypnotising in this, with his soothing voice, you just can’t help but be amazed by him. Rolf will always be plagued by what he has done and he’ll live with that regret until the end.
The soothing voice and gregarious demeanour are all just part of the sexual predators repertoire, how he gets close to his victims, and how he gets away with it for so long. He always was and is a vile human, I’m glad he’s so sick he can no longer eat and will likely be gone from this world in a very short time.

Stop supporting greedy lawyers and their quest for money. Look at the way lawyers use the misguided, the deluded and the outright fraudulent. Wendy Wild is a 54 year-old woman who is the 7 - 8-year-old mentioned by those who seek to demonise. This is the best example the muck rakers can think of to promote the theme of the male perpetrator + female victim. Wendy Wild decided to go for some Harris money after she went bankrupt. Wendy Wild alleged that Harris gave her a swift touch when she was at the head of an autograph queue, in a crowded hall 45 YEARS AGO. Strangely she didn't tell anyone, strangely no one saw it happen. It has been proven, by the police who were seeking evidence, that Harris was not at the location, a community hall in Leigh Park, Portsmouth, where she alleges this happened. Harris was not there either 3 years before or 3 years after the year that Wendy Wild was 7 years old. The police searched the news archives, they questioned the staff of the hall in Portsmouth, they letter boxed residents of the town and they interviewed people in aged care facilities. The police who did all this work are disgusted that Wendy Wild's accusation still resulted in a conviction. All men should be warned by this. These are FACTS.
Despite not knowing much about him and skipping through large chunks of this video... I think: She's very classy and seemed relaxed. He did a pretty nice job capturing her.
The fact that this woman can quite comfortably engage in small talk with pretty much anyone and everyone without giving anything away of herself and has done so for decade upon decade is really quite remarkable. But then she has had years to perfect her craft. And we should ignore the revelation of Harris's child abuse history, it has no bearing on this episode in his life. Personally I think he did a grand job of capturing the Queen.

I'm saddened that he tainted his life with his perversion because he was so gifted by such a beautiful gift. It is interesting that they spoke about George Stubbs. I had to do a painting of a horse for Three Penny Opera that was based on a George Stubbs painting.
+Matt Maloney Well, they fixed that last March (after you wrote). Maybe the palace wanted the shock and media buzz to die down a little first. Otherwise it would look like they were pandering to the press. Or maybe they wanted to be sure there would not be a successful appeal, which would really have left them looking like prats, had they quickly stripped him of the CBE.
@Floyd1504 It's presumably Rolf. Even through a video, he has this horrible awkwardness about him. I don't think she wanted to hear him talking about dropping a camera, stubbing his toe or being late to a meeting.
You can see just how deeply impressed with himself he is, hanging on every single word, being ever so careful not to move too quickly for we might just miss a whole second of the ultimate harris charm and intellect. In the U.S. we have our version of this man, and his name is Cosby.
I remembered seeing it back when I lived in London and before I heard all of these heartbreaking stories about him. I once watched Rolf on art. The most depressing and amusing aspect is to imagine a predator coming so close to the Queen and bringing such dishonor.
As much as I loved the Queen she wasn’t the easiest to strike a conversation with. She can be quite difficult. She is abrasive at times, and makes others uncomfortable with her lack of replies and awkward silences. I imagine it must have been difficult for Diana to try to build a relationship with her. I also found her to be sarcastic at times when people asked her questions or tried to come forward to help her. We all just say ahhh isn’t she lovely, but if that was an ordinary person you would say don’t talk to me in that fashion. She got away with however she spoke because she was Queen, and we already had a great respect for her, but she came across as rude at times.
It's nice to read these honest insider views. I think a lot of people fail to realise that the image of the Queen they have has been meticulously crafted through the media presentation that she's been given. And this is the problem with the entire royal family as an institution. Unfortunately, when you raise people to believe they're better than everybody else by blood, it's not surprising that they're actually not very nice people in general. But none of that matters if the only exposure to them are images of them waving and smiling to the masses, delivering inspiration speeches they didn't write, and being told at every opportunity how wonderful they are and how everyone else adores them.
I don't like him but Charles seems a lot more outgoing and accessible in comparison. Even in correspondence he uses the first person instead of the Royal 'we'.
Jimmy Savile and Gary Glitter were totally different to Rolf Harris. For a start there was actual evidence against them. Rolf Harris (if you actually bother to look into the details of the trial and the unprofessional way the police "investigated" his case) was convicted mainly after trial by media before his case came to court and his whole trial was clouded by the first case dealt with by the court, that he was accused of having molested an 8 year old. The other charges against him at his first trial were tainted by the accusations made by the woman who claimed to be 8 years old at the time. However, when the details of her accusations were investigated thoroughly by investigators acting for Rolf Harris at his subsequent trials, it was shown that the whole thing had been made up and consequently he was found not guilty of that charge. However, as he had already been convicted, it was too late to prevent the jury from perceiving him as being a paedophile. The other accusations for which he was convicted were also provably false or at the very least based on accounts that when looked at or scrutinised, could not have happened the way it was claimed. He was found not guilty of all other charges brought at his second and third trial after "victims" had brought stories to operation yew tree after responding to requests for "victims" to come forward having been told "you will be believed" with newspapers of a certain type boasting of potential compensation for victims being in the tens of thousands if not more. None of the cases on their own would have been enough to convict anyone. However, the fact that Operation Yewtree presented their "evidence" as if there had been a pattern was enough for the jury to decide, against real evidence, that he was guilty. There is a book out now by this investigation team (Rolf Harris. The Defence Team's Special investigator Reveals The Truth Behind The Trials by William Merritt) which quite clearly illustrates the shocking stitch up Rolf Harris was subject to. Anyone who genuinely thinks Rolf Harris was treated fairly should read this account and it will shock you to the core that someone could be convicted on the flimsiest of evidence. I think there is a suggestion that Rolf Harris may have been a bit tactile at times with people (not those who made accusations as most of them provably did not come in to contact with him or others whose account would have been witnessed by people if they had been true) as was the behaviour of people in the 70s and 80s, which doesn't condone that sort of thing but it was almost certainly not as sexually aggressive as was portrayed in court and certainly not paedophilia. As the book points out, the Metropolitan Police investigating these crimes were, at the time, involved with their own questionable practice of stamping new female recruits as an initiation ceremony where young police woman had their bare bottoms stamped with the station stamp while everyone else looked on! I know there will be people who take issue with what I have said, but I suggest you do a bit of research first and not just rely on what you are told by the tabloid media. As I said, Jimmy Savile and Gary Glitter were totally different cases, but unfortunately Rolf Harris was tarred with the same brush, as was nearly Cliff Richard, Paul Gambaccini, Jim Davidson, Freddie Starr etc. all of whose cases were dismissed or fund not guilty through a lack of evidence and believability of the complainants.
@@deepsouthNZ No he did not. The letter says nothing of the sort. He is sorry that the consensual relationship he had with his friend’s daughter had been painted as being something other than what he believed it had been for the many years it had been going on (from when she was 18 onwards) ie. one of affection and mutual feelings towards each other was suddenly being alleged to be something else. The relationship changed when it was ended and the girl tried to extort money from Rolf Harris. When she was unsuccessful, the relationship was portrayed as something more sinister (difficult to accept given the relationship - no matter how ill advised - had gone on until she was in her mid twenties). If it had been as abusive as she made out it seems unlikely she would have kept going back for more when there was no need. Read the book I mentioned in my original comment because it is covered more thoroughly and accurately there, by professional investigators actually doing their job and scrutinising what was alleged, to see if it stood up to investigation and it did not, beyond reasonable doubt.

You took the words out of my mouth. Can hours of childhood entertainment fondly invested in the memory banks be summarily dissolved by what transpired?
Don’t feel to guilty. When you research the case against Rolf Harris, it is amazing it ever got to court let alone that he was found guilty of anything. The prosecution’s case was based on provably inaccurate/false allegations. The “evidence “ appeared to be that if someone said it, it must be true - a witch-hunt no less. It’s exactly the same as someone popping up claiming you did something to them when they were a child and you being found guilty because “you will be believed” was what the police told the “victim”.
I don't know how we'll cope when this wonderful woman finally end her reign, so to speak. 67 years as monarch is unlikely to be surpassed, but then they said the same about Victoria. She is totally relaxed during the first sitting.

But there was far more to him than his crime, or crimes - he doesn't deserve to be air-brushed from history.

Eww, I'm sure they wouldn't have filmed her touching her ring :O
What a beautiful gesture from the queen to have her portrait taken from her room for Rolf to inspect.. these are the things people may overlook..she was a truly lovely woman.
Extraordinary... superhuman... should have won three Nobel prizes for that gesture alone
I loved this... and how the Queen's personality shine through in the programme. What an exceptionally lovely lady!
I'd like to agree... but if she wasn't the Queen, she wouldn't be picked out of a crowd as anything spectacular, IMO. Very pretty and nice person... would live her life well and honourably, but not at all an "exceptionally lovely lady."
When she was younger and in full regalia at state affairs she looked like a movie star - she was stunning... but almost anyone would stop the show when all dolled up by dressers and dripping with diamonds.
It was her dedication to duty and to her promise to serve that is exceptional. We have no way of knowing how many days she got out of bed feeling like hell and still went out smiling and shaking hands until her arms ached. She's getting the respect now that she's always shown to others.

Rolf may be persona non grata. But i loved his portrait of the Queen. Never con fuse the value of the art with the virtue of the artist
He admitted his crime against his daughters childhood friend in an apology letter to her family .
