BlackBerry KEY2 Review

  • The BlackBerry KEY2 isn’t the first Android-powered BlackBerry, but it is by far the best. Its blend of style, solid performance, a fantastic physical keyboard and a long-lasting battery more than enough to win over one-time BlackBerry devotees and people who hate typing on touchscreens. That’s not exactly a huge market though, and the phone’s many strengths may not count for much to people who have thoroughly embraced their iPhones and Galaxys.

One of the best and unbiased review out there.
I think they price of the phone is a little steep, otherwise the build quality, security, physical keyboard and battery life itself is a good sell. I have stopped gaming ages ago on phones, so this kinda tick all of the boxes.
Now have to wait when this comes down to Australia and at what price.

My first smartphone was HTC ChaCha. Then I switched over to Sony Xperia Pro. Two absolutely wonderful keyboard smartphones. I took the jump to Moto X 2014 when there was no real keyboard smartphone left in the market. 4 years down the line. I. STILL. HATE. TYPING. ON. A. SCREEN. The lack of feedback is SO annoying. You have to concentrate to correct your mistakes. Whereas on a keyboard say on a computer you do it instinctively. Anyone else who says otherwise is lying.
With an on-screen keyboard you are reducing the amount of data your body is receiving from your smart device. Why the heck would you choose to do that?? I really think its a corporate conspiracy that people are sooooo comfortable using their 'on-screen phone keyboards' but at the same time ask them to use an 'on-screen keyboard' on their PC/Mac and hell freezes over. Why the difference??
I and most people I know type more or equal on a phone as much as they do on their PC/Mac. Then why the double standards??
Bring back the physical keyboard! Its just dumb to think that lesser input is better.

The key1 was a good phone and at $549 it was a fair price. The key2 is an improvement but the most it should have cost is $599... I run a small business so I ordered it, the keyboard and that battery is a must for me, I'm really fast at flick typing since I own a Passport, Classic and a Priv. My Priv lags really bad so I can't wait for my key2 to get here. The funny thing is that my passport still runs like a champ, it's the best keyboard ever on a BlackBerry and the phone is built like a tank. I'm using it now to type this. I hope the key2 is fun to type on as this passport.

I use the productivity tab and find it helpful and though some launch
Google Assistant (you can easily use voice command) from the convenience
button, I use the convenience key exclusively for the phone launcher
and obviously use it more often. Rarely experience pocket dials and it
is ready to go at any moment. I don't even have to look at the screen
or keyboard to launch the phone. Perfect.

I love blackberry. The class, the quality and functionality all blend really well together to give a great cellphone. I own 2 of these bad boys. One for business and one for personal use. All I would add is introduce more colors. Not gaudy types but more a suave feel resembling a mercedez in your palm type of thing. So colors like midnight blue, fiery neon red, gun metal etc would be fantastic. It's like your phone aesthetically and functionally is an extension of your car, right in your palm.

A time saving review and straight to the point. A productivity device for 600 USD+ is too much, that too without wireless charging. BB photography is good in normal light condition but bad in low light and this video didn't address that.
I have been using BB for the last 12 years, Pearl, Bold, Q5, Z30 and DTEK 60 now....their phones are solid and would not die. Had to give those away after 3 years of use so that I could buy a new BB. But DTEK 60 is a real disappoint due to it's fragility as they made it in china and its so called gorilla glass kept cracking with every fall from 3 ft height. It's damn expensive to repair. In India, they charge Rs.10,000/$143 for the front glass and Rs.2,000/$29. It's crazy and not feasible.
Even then, I would love to see a solid built BB, a slider keyboard and relaunch of BB Passport in Android. But they have a nasty thing about getting things wrong time and again. They are far away from the pulse of the market.

This is a very very nice review and I appreciate that it touched on every single point. I have one thing about the reviews of this phone in particular that I don't like. The fact that every review of this phone contains some complain that this phone doesn't have enough horsepower to be able to run Fortnight especially I don't like because either way people don't buy a phone with keyboard for its ability to run major games. Besides that little discrepancy, I like this review very much. Thank you.

Best device, moved from a key one, had about 15 devices most of which were full touch screen and got too frustrated trying to communicate effectively on a picture of a keyboard, someone needs to fix that plagued tap a square image of a physical keyboard to type letters to form words mistake that we're still stuck with.
Camera is super fun and reliable
Multitasking apps and the short cut keys make this happen incomparable to all other attempts at a solid communication device, it just wins all day.

What’s disappointing for a niche but supremely premium brand like BlackBerry is that it couldn’t keep up its own operating system and instead switched to Android for survival. I understand survival is more important than clinging to its brand value, but I’m still optimistic about BlackBerry OS rejuvenating the brand someday. And since it’s forgone conclusion that BB is not meant for everybody, I’m pretty sure those minuscule population wouldn’t want something as ubiquitous as an Android. When it comes to a niche brand, it’s got to BB and iOS only.
Oh well, and I have a holy affinity towards Passport. See? I told you, BB is not for everybody. And those who own it aren’t like everybody.

Here is what blackberry needs to improve about this phone so it will rock :
    - thinner bezels (we have a lot of bezels here) --> if we only have the keyboard and the screen that would be fantastic
    - Use Amoled technology for the screen
    - A flagship processor --> the one used now is really dated
    - Use more RAM
of course keeps all the great staff like : fingerprint sensor + the headphone jack
If BackBerry does this, I really believe they can have one of the best smartphones ever, specially that Blackberry had an identity and distinguish itselp from the rest of the compitition

They have a privacy browser, vault, DTEK etc.
DTEK just displays the permissions used by apps, you can manipulate that with android settings too, and duckduckgo etc can easily replace their other apps. So if you buy this for security there's no point

As someone that constantly has to respond, professionally, to many pressing technical items in the day, evening, or in the middle of the night... It makes a lot of sense. It takes too much time to write a message, then edit it all again afterwards because you can't type fast enough to get your thoughts out, and be accurate... and EVERY single technical "non-normal" word / abbreviation / company name/ etc gets 'fixed'. Too many errors, too slow, etc. Trying to move the little android cursor line around is so frustrating, but you can move the cursor on this Blackberry with insanely fast speed and ease. I could go on.

You actually don't get more screen real estate once the VKB on a full touch device is up. Then the amount of screen you can view is greatly reduced and in some cases the BlackBerry Key2 ends up having more viable screen space for your content while typing.

Not good enough for the money. Blackberry as a highly valued brand is dead. The sooner they get it the better. For $649 they need to be throwing in a much better camera, screen (OLED is better) and top of the line specs. They continue shooting themselves in the foot. Their ignorance is blinding. The 1+ is cheaper and better specced. I love BB but they're taking the piss.

Losing money however is still losing money and abandoning BB10 is crazy given the strength of the platform naturally in security but also the BB hub.
Perfect.
