I have a 2012 X5 Diesel i need to reset my brake sensor. Can you please help me out.
Every time I see a video from you folks up North I realize how lucky those of us in the Southwest U.S. are in regard to how nice our stuff stays (no corrosion) due to it not being constantly exposed to getting pounded from the rain, snow, & salt.

Thank you for a good video Mark. You covered the basics very well. Consider using a modified wire hanger to hang the caliper out of the way, better gloves, anti seize grease and some brake cleaner spray to round up a professional brake job.

I hope it helps you. It is quite simple, but sometimes the lip on the edge of the disc is so pronounced that it is hard to pull the caliber off so you may have to squeeze out the piston a bit before removing

Very nice DIY, by the way, for that screw holding the rotor, can I still remove the rotor without taken off that screw (the one on my is stripped a bit, and I can't remove that screw)? Thanks.
I did rotors and brake pads on my 2016 x5 brake pad sensor has no damage so I reused and it’s not letting me reset. Is it because I need to remove paint on pad where the sensor goes or you think it’s a bad sensor?
If you saw the brake light at any point before then it’s done. Generally it should be replaced. If you never saw the light and the sensor is good then maybe it needs to be reseated to the Main harness better

Nice one Mark. If you really think about it, brake sensors are unnecessary because you can easily see the brake pads through the wheels. This is why I cut the sensor wire and tie the wires together. Never have to buy a new sensor or have a stupid money light on the dash.

If you have the code, that means the sensor is damaged and needs to be replaced first
@@ECPP There is no code, just the service interval reminder?
Every time that Sensor goes off you need a new one and brakes.
When you reset the code on the dash, what exactly does that do? Does it reset the vehicle service intervals for ALL service, or just the brakes?
Hi, you can gain access to a few different service resets but that one shows specifically brakes if that is only pushed
The shroud covering the brake fluid reservoir may have the or 13mm socket. Plastic fasteners and just need 90° turn

I tried to reset the brake pads sensor many times after I changed the pads and the sensor but it doesn’t work and kept yellow.
Whats the size of the screw thats holding the rotor the 1 in the back after the caliper comes loose? Or what type is it
Hi I’m not sure if you can help I have an X5 E. 70 and I’m unable to remove the rear disc it just seems to be stuck on and I have moved the six small talk Bolt but I really don’t know I’m a lost
Be careful Jim, I did not do the vid on that one, but it is holding due to the electric park brakes. Has to be disabled.

If I remove the caliper and then there’s a plastic cover to be removed and then turn torx screw Clockwise until it stops
And then reassemble

You made a very good video on all parts, EXCEPT, you didn't clean and lubricate your caliper slide pins. They'll get dry over time and keep the calipers from retracting after letting off the brakes. If the outside pad has more wear than the inside pad, most likely the caliper slide pins are dry and hanging up. If the pins slide easily in the caliper bushings, the next culprit will be the caliper piston(s) are binding up and not retracting. You can either rebuild the brake caliper or buy replacements. In my opinion, it's more cost effective to buy rebuilt calipers from your local auto parts store.

What size torx did you use to remove the caliper bracket in order to get the rotors off?
Hey did you ever find out what torques size that was because I can't find it on anything
If you own a electric ratchet you can do this job in about 30 to 45 mins a side. Use brake clean and grease the slide pins and use a bit of antiseize where appropriate. Wire wheel to bust the rust. Cardboard for the floor towel over the brake fluid reservoir. Tray for your tools and a few rags. Wear gloves and a mask if you wish...I choose to wear a mask and eye protection. If something is stuck...pb blaster penetrating oil soak a few times over a couple hours with an impact should get it freed up.
Any idea why this wouldnt work on a 2012 x5 3.0? It does not ask me to reset. When i hold down after the screen shows the car with the hood up.
Thought maybe you would install drilled and slotted rotors? I got all 4 for my 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee with pads for about 250.00-300.00 on E-BAY--Actually about 6 months ago replaced both front calipers as 1 piston was getting stuck and not pushing back in when I released the pedal, I made it home then ordered both from Advance auto, under 50.00 for both

I have heard conflicting options on "if" the rotor needs "automatic" replacement when changing the pads. Obvious wear on yours, others, not so much. Erring on the side of caution, granted, but....

Hi Thomas, even before I owned the X5, my previous BMW's were similar, in that the dealer mentioned that due to the tighter operating tolerances and the design of safety features like traction control, ABS and the like, going too thin reduces the effectiveness of the designed function in these cars. Every one of my BMWs seem to just slight out of tolerance on the machined thickness once it has been reground and if using stock pads, by the time they have worn to the point of replacement, the disc is usually ready to go as well. If a person tried some aftermarket pads (maybe a harder or softer pad) this may have an impact on the wear of the rotor too, but if using more or less OEM, this has always been my experience. That being said if a persons budget does not allow to buy discs, pad change only could work(at ones own risk and I have done this on other vehicles in the past before too), it is better than running everything down to steel. Ultimately though, I would recommend going brand new disc and pads with a new sensor. Cheers
@@ECPP agreed. Several times, when I did change the pads myself, I felt no need to change the rotor. This was subjective, depending on the make, year and model.
But, my 335i recieved new rotors, without hesitation from me. I don't drive a great piece of vehicle, without proper care. Enjoyed the video!

If anything just a dab of loctite after you have wire brushed and Brakleen’d the threads.
BMW has a known issue with these coming loose after replacement especially, the superseded version of these bolts come with a thread locker pre-applied.

Today I was quoted from bmw dealership $1100 for front pads and rotors and $600 for just pads lol I can buy all parts for $280 pads and rotors

DO NOT lube the caliper bracket retaining bolts!!! BMW list these as a ‘one time use’ bolt...but you can use blue lot it’s on them to re-use them. If you lube them...they will fall out! I had this happen to me because I lubed them.

BMW break jobs are easy just make sure you get OEM parts or you will have to do it all over a again soon. Bmws don't do well on non OEM brakes.
OEM or top quality stuff is always best if you want it to last.
