Installing any Bafang mid drive is dead easy! almost anyone can do it(I'm an OAP). There is only one potentially hard part, and that is removing the bottom bracket. Tidying up the wiring can also be a bit head scratching, but cable ties are cheap so you can have several goes at it if necessary. DONT spend 1000's of pounds buying a ready built ebike when you can convert almost any bike into an ebike for a fraction of the cost.
You can get other brand like lekke for front chain ring different sizes. More importantly is offset and how it lines up to the rear sprocket (gears). Larger gear front will change gear ratio to rear and affect climbing ability or top end speed
At first I was like "oooh man you didn't get the special wrench to tighten the unit, you are losing points here" but then I saw you caulking the battery base and it all was good xD
Hi Edwin - Thanks for this - I'm shopping now - now that it's been a year and half since you built this I have some questions... 1) How is it today ? would you buy again ? 2) What size tires do you have ? I'm thinking of 700x38s 3) What battery did you get ? I'm thinking 48v x 17.5 4) What range did you get when you used pedal assist where you still worked at it 5) any issues to share ? Thanks again
Hi Stewart, 1. Still great, I would buy this again. 2. That is the size I have installed as well, I would even go wider If I could, but my frame does not allow it. 3. I have a 48V/850Wh battery. My advice: buy as big as you can, it’s nice to have enough energy to make extended trips possible. 4. 100-120km 5. Lately I cannot use the highest gear although the cassette is still new, it keeps slipping. I have been thinking of buying a new derailleur with a shorter cage that puts more tension on the chain but I’m not sure if that will solve the problem. I’m also considering another front sprocket with more teeth so I’m able to reach higher speeds in lower gears.
thanks for the video, im mid converting my wifes bike and didnt know rivet nuts were a thing, ill look at those as her frame has no mount holes for the battery. did you get them from a diy store?
Accu is toch aardig veel gewicht. In alu ,staal of RvS uitvoering? Bedankt voor reactie.
5mm aluminium rivnuts available on eBay @ about £6.50 for a hundred, searich UA-cam for how to fit without special tool. When correctly fitted they will create a reinforced circular flange around the top under the surface that will provide more strength than was lost from drilling frame.
Nice video. Congrats! Where did you get the kit? and how much was it? It would be nice if you could provide the links as well as some details regarding the shopping Thanks in advance
No, you spotted that correctly. I did not find a good place to attach the magnetic rings, therefore I did not mount them eventually. I'm not missing them though. When I stop pedalling, the motor cuts power anyway.
Thanks ..looks like it was made for the job. I'm about to start my second ebike build using this motor. My first was a 1500w rear hub and a 25hr battery pack..Hope to get my new bike down to 50lb to use on trails exclusively. My present bike is 73lb, still it's an awesome bike..
That seems like an awesome setup. It must have a lot of torque! What brand/model of hub motor did you use? Bringing your new bike down to 50lb will be a challenge I think, mine is around 55lb I guess.
It's on my old Proflex, used the 1500w rear hub kit from Passion Bike ..it will do 70kph on the flat and feels more like a motorcycle at that speed. The battery is 140pc 18650 cells 52v. Hope to get a bike at 30lb and a much smaller battery pack plus the BBS02. My last trail ride of 25k still had 75% of the charge!
Hello Edwin, I've enjoyed a lot your video, since a few weeks ago, I've been thinking about converting my bicycle, here in Mexico I can get this Bafang Kit, I'd want to ask you about quality Bafang motor, Does it work well? What do you think? How many kilometers have you traveled on your bicycle using that engine?, Thanks in Advance
I’ve currently done over 6000 km. with it and it still no issues with the motor unit. I’m currently fixing my battery because I think I have a faulty BMS(battery management system). Still this has nothing to do with the motor. It is very quiet and has plenty of power. I can highly recommend it! Good luck with your conversion!
Edwin Mol Thank you very much for your prompt response, I will make the conversion soon, taking advantage of the fact that I will be locked up for several days due to the pandemic, I hope you can solve the problem of your BMS, take care and good luck.
I am gonna buy one bbs02b 48v 750w. Any advice? What display? What battery ? Bottle dolphin shark? 4p 3200 or 5p 2600. Do i need a thumb throttle? Do i need (have hydraulic) brake sensors? Do i need gear sensor ? Any help welcome. Installing on scott genius mc50
The battery depends on the range you desire. If you want a big range, go for the biggest you can get. You do want the gear sensor. Thumb throttle is personal, I personally don’t like it and don’t use it but others do. Brake sensors are not required.
Great work! I did the same installation with the Bafang bbhd on a Cube Kathmandu. The cable installation was tricky. I used a 1mm spacer on the bottom bracket. For the battery installation I used a similar way. But with a lot of special black glue. A forgot the name of the glue. But it holds very well. You have to measure your chain continousely. After 5 month i have to change it. It becomes too long. What are your expirirnces?
Nice setup you have! So far I've driven about 1500 km and the chain and sprockets are still in good shape. What is the size of your chainwheel? Mine has 46 teeth.
Edwin Mol My transmission: Front: lekkie bling ring 42T Back: shimano cassette 11-34T With this setup i drive 40-45kmh. I feel that the motor has the power to drive faster. More than 50kmh is not possible right now. The cadence is too high. For a higher top speed i have to change the cassette in the back. Probably 36T or more.
Hello. Could you tell me the name or reference of the small inserts put in the frame of bicycle to fix the support of battery ? Thank you in advance for your answer.
Hi What is the U shaped bracket (marked AXA), fitted over the rear wheel, Near where the pannier rack is attached? No doubt nothing to do with the motor.
Not with this bike. I did have a problem on my other bike with the gear cable, because it ran through a notch on the bottom of the frame. After installing the motor, I could not route the cable through it anymore. The fix was simple: Buy another outer and inner gear cable and route it via another path. Hope this helps!
Its not normally a problem as there is usually enough room to leave the plastic guide where it is, BUT the problem comes when you need to replace the gear cable because the guide is now hidden by the motor and its a pain to thread the gear cable through, so i now do as Edwin suggests and get rid of the guide and run an outer cable through the same space(or reroute).
I think that when you've drilled the holes for the battery, aluminium powder falled inner the space where pedals/motor rotate. Maybe a problem in the future. Check it. Overall a good work. Biking cheers :)
If my bike has a 42T chainwheel, and eventually i mount the the 46T stock bafang chainwheel, will the length of the chain effect the ride or anything? Will i be able to still use the shimano gears after all?
It's probably best to mount a new chain that is a little longer to adjust for the 4 extra teeth. But it might work with your current chain, changes are that you won't be able to get to the lower gears though.
You can tell just from the intro picture of the tools used that this was a half-assed install. You SHOULDN'T use a hand wrench to tighten the main locking nut on the motor... period. Get the proper sockets along with whatever BBSxx model you choose, Do it right the 1st time and this demo doesn't show that.
This is a guy in his back yard. Not a commercial shop. The guy used a screw driver and hammer instead of a spanner wrench to lock down the lock nut. You want him to buy special tools? Give me a break.
@@bryanburnside9783 No, no Mr. Burnside. My advice was to people that want to do it right... obviously, you can use a hammer and a rock like normal.
