    Thanks for the great review. Been looking at projector reviews and found all projectors available tend to be disappointing vs the LG OLED I am used to. Dim washed out image would be too big downgrade. But the TV has the serious size limitation and can't fit larger than 78. inch on the wall, and been hoping that finally a projector would be made which would be worth it, because at least a motorised screen coule be much bigger than the space where the TV fits. Looks like this one raises my intetest. Thanks for the good reviews (and I am also a fan of your DIY loudspeaker videos). Keep up good work!

    Another great review mate. I am not in the market yet for a projector as that will be one of the last things I purchase for my room that is currently under construction. But seeing this review I should consider a UST projector as an option.

    • @Toid
      @Toid  9 місяців тому +1

      I completely get that. It would be the last thing I bought as well. Is too easy for something to happen to it. One of the things I really like about an UST is it says so far away from you that it makes any noise from it unnoticeable. I wish I could say that about my JVC, but it sits right overhead and can get really loud. Very distracting.

    Excellent review. One thing I noticed that is making me hesitate is that the projector does not do HDR10+, which is surprising since it can do Dolby Vision. My issue is that a lot of content on Amazon Prime is HDR10+, but not Dolby Vision. I did read somewhere, though, that a firmware upgrade from HDR10 to HDR10+ is at least theoretically possible. Does the manufacturer plan on adding this? If the answer is yes, I will buy one.

    • @Toid
      @Toid  9 місяців тому +1

      I honestly do not know. To a certain degree, it is really odd that Amazon is supporting HDR 10+. Currently the only tv manufacturers to support it are Samsung and Panasonic. And since there is still a licensing fee ) which last I checked was more expensive then Dolby Vision, it doesn’t really make sense. Having said that there aren’t many projectors that support Dolby Vision and even less that support HDR 10+. The vast majority of content is still mastered in Dolby Vision (Netflix, Disney Plus, and physical media.) that I don’t think that trend will change anytime soon.

      You could say I'm surprised too... The most important aspect for picture quality is contrast, and the JVCs are on a league of its own compared to any DLP projector.
      I gotta say though, I would like to see what full coverage of Rec.2020 looks like, on video content that is properly graded for it.
      It also makes me wonder if the colors were accurate on the test he compares the colors of both units, because it's easy to get a wide color gamut display to look "better" (more saturated) but if the content isn't properly graded for it, the colors are actually way off.
      As an example, I used to own a very old JVC RS1 more than a decade ago, and it too had a wide color gamut, with no way to correct it... the result is things like grass would look almost radioactive (i actually did manage to tame the gamut, but only when using it with my PC and a custom color profile)
      And by the way... is this video sponsored in any way?

    I'm pretty sure the 4000 contrast is the dynamic contrast, they wrote this on their Kickstarter in the comments.

      This was reviewed and it doesn't even come close to 4000:1. It measured around 1600:1 with NO dynamic contrast. The Nexigo Aurora Pro at $1799 measured 4000:1 and 7000:1 dynamic contrast - much better.

I was very interested in the XGIMI Horizon Ultra Pro but then some people say the contrast is not good. @@DigitalPlaygroundTV That I cannot answer since I've never used an Epson projector or any type of projector with 3000 brightness. But what I know from buying both the XHU and the HC1, is that the HC1 is much brighter and the picture is AMAZING compare to the XHU. The XHU was definitely not brighter than the Hisense, nor was the image as sharp and crisp either. I ended up buying both because I can't trust these UA-camrs claiming that the XHU was that good. As much as I wanted to like the XHU more, it was the worst one. I only bought the Hisense after I watched @thehookup Video comparison. And he was completely right about the Hisense and the Xgimi. But as I said before, I cannot say if the Hisense will be better than your Epson. if you want something really bright, than I would suggest and UST. Sorry which JVC is that? NX9? Its got the gold ring.

  • @tbob2224
    @tbob2224 8 місяців тому

    How old is the lamp on that JVC? A lot of that difference is likely down to tonemapping assuming you're watching HDR - a projector from 2015 will never match the tonemapping of a modern display. If you'd use MadVR set up properly I'd bet a lot of the differences would diminish.
    The gamut is of course still wider on the Thor (and it's still likely brighter) but properly restricted and calibrated to the content you're watching it shouldn't be so saturated - you're probably getting that overcooked look like Samsung Galaxy OLED phone screens etc.
    I have seen a Formovie Theater and it is impressive for a DLP projector it simply cannot compare (in most cases) to a modern JVC like the NZ5 or similar especially in dark scenes.

    Claiming this is better at blacks than a JVC is bold. While I really want this to be true, it's hard not to be skeptical. You mentioned the details, but that can be attributed to DTM or raised black floor. So two questions as I'm really curious:
    - How's the black floor compared to the JVC?
    - In terms of Dynamic Tone Mapping, does it offer it and how does it do?

    • @Toid
      @Toid  9 місяців тому +2

      Just to be clear, I am not claiming it has a better black floor than the JVC. The JVC did have a better black floor. However, the Ultimea has a much better range, which gives it better shadow detail in my testing environment.
      It does have Dolby Vision and I think the tone mapping is great. But you can take a look at some of the video tests I put in there to see if it meets your expectations. It so say which one has Dolby Vision.

    • @robinv1485
      @robinv1485 9 місяців тому +1

      Thank you for the reply. Yea I guessed you were not talking about black floor, but just the detail that was coming out in low APL scenes. How's the black floor on this tho? On par with something like, let's say the 5050ub? Cause that would be my "acceptable range" which is why I disregard every UST pretty much until they get there.
      About the range, I guess you mean contrast? That's a weird thing since native contrast wise on avforums I think you guys measured way below the rated 4000:1, and your NP5 has 10 times that amount right? Is this like the epson ls12000 where the native contrast on paper is lower but the intrascene contrast seems better?
      I was waiting for the black friday to see if any jvc or the sony 5000es got some discounts here, but I'm open to alternatives ofc, so when I saw your video I got curious on this one since you're thinking of switching the JVC for it which is almost unheard of. JVC users don't even switch to the epson or sony due to the black levels. It's also a lot cheaper at least for now.@@Toid
