Hands down the best UST projector comparison guide I have seen; you include vital information (noise, distance from wall) that many reviews simply ignore. Thank you for your work!
I have been using a UST projector for 4 years, watched countless number of reviews and so know a thing or two about UST. I have to say that I am very impressed with your review here, which is very fair and relevant (in contrast most other reviews talk about obvious, much less important or relevant attributes of the projectors). Man...This is the best video I have seen as far as comparing the short throws. I have been searching and watching A LOT of videos because I am about to purchase a short throw. This video was very THOROUGH in my opinion compared to the other videos ive watched. Thanks man for helping me make a very hard decision.
I’ve been trying to decide between the Formovie and AWOL 3500. Formovie has those black levels but with AWOL adding 3D so I can still watch movies I already own that is a huge advantage. Now they will be adding Dolby Vision which closes another gap. Nice that a company listens and adds requests. I appreciate your review of SD vs HD content on here. Great comparison review which was very helpful for me.
Hi! Just a little anecdote, I went with the Formovie, delivered mid November. TBH, I have some regrets. The brightness is a huge issue. Even with a top of the line ALR screen, dolby vision is mostly unusable and daytime viewing has been problematic, even in our lower level. If I could do it again, I'd go with the AWOL, no questions asked.
Bro you KILLED this review, thank you so much for this detailed and in-depth review. This couldn't have been easy, so many different compassion with solid framing!
As someone that’s just learned about this technology, this video was non stop useful info. I don’t know if the tech is quite ready for me personally, but it’s definitely hard to resist the idea of getting a really good quality 150” viewing experience for $5k, compared to a top of the line OLED that’s 1/4 the size.
I follow some audio & video channel and while their video are good, You sir just blew them out with a comparison that give no 1 company the edge over the other. Putting every one on the same starting line and let them run, the viewers can see who crossed first. Thanks you
I've delayed watching this video because I had already bought the Xgimi Aura and was afraid of the sting of knowing I could've made a better choice... what a relief! Fantastic review as usual.
OMG the amount of work and time you put into this video is crazy, I know cause I also reviewed some of the projectors you just mentioned, the only feature you forgot to mention was 3D support which I love in projectors and the AWOL does have and just like you said it has the brightest image and amazing picture, anyways, I just subbed to your channel cause you deserve it brother and gave you a thumbs up as well.!!
Hi, I'm from Taiwan, I actually went to test several projectors, e.g. Xgimi, lsp9t, v7050i, P2, LS300, LG HU715, jimgo, formovie Theater. Finally, i bought formovie Theater, It include the best cost performance ratio & amazing color performance(Another one is hu715 but not suitable for bright room & not cheap, if u have enough budget, u can try "hu915", it have higher lumen, 0.66dmd) & dolby vision. After buying home: Great sound make me amazing(b&w 15w*2)(I originally used klipsch rp600m) The temperature is lower than I thought
This is why I’m a subscriber. You show the weaknesses in other stock reviews by bringing up issues like noise. I recently had a similar issue with a highly recommended toaster oven. All reviews put this product at the top but all failed to mention that you can burn the back of your fingers (which I did) by just grabbing the handle. Thanks for the thought you’ve put into your product assessments.
I *really* appreciate you putting the entire table of the individual rankings and scoring for the trade study at the end. I obviously have my own weights for those various ranks that altered the results (i.e., I couldn't care less about the speakers, noise, or latency because of my setup and use-case) and helped narrow down what I wanted. Hats off to your diligence, and the sheer dedication to compile such a massive amount of data about these devices. As always, thanks!
**Minor Corrections** • The Nexigo PJ90 Aurora actually has 60 watts of speakers, not 30. 2x 15w woofers and 2x 15w tweeters. • The JMGO does have 4 leveling feet that allow for about 3/8" (10mm) of correction.
One question - I have been researching USTs for at least couple years now and IIRC while the LS300 could take 4K content, it can only display up to 1080p on the screen (unlike the LS500 which gets 4K with Pixel-shifting). With that in mind, is it fair to include in comparison with the other USTs since 1080p picture might inherently look inferior to some people than 4K image? Great video as always! And hope you and your family are doing well and safe after Ian.
The JMGO is also 1080p. The LS300 was included as a less expensive option for people who want a bright projector. Unfortunately the tradeoff with the LS300 isn't brightness vs resolution, it's brightness vs noise level. If the LS300 was tolerable at 100% brightness it would be a good value at $1800.
@@TheHookUp Yeah - as someone that is highly susceptible to Rainbow effect, I am a bit biased towards Epson's 3LCD technology and agree the fan noise level can be a distraction. While it might be fine on my ceiling mounted $500 Epson Home Cinema, it would be less so when customers spend $2000 on a UST like the LS300. While I skipped over the LS500 due to the lens design, I hope they address the noise level issue with the just announced LS800 - Epson has shown they can effectively control noise levels with their higher-end ceiling mounted projectors, so they wouldn't have much of an excuse to NOT implement it on the $3500 LS800 - fingers crossed 🤞
This is by far *THE BEST* video I've viewed on Laser TVs / projectors. I'm currently looking to upgrade my OPTOMA 8350 purchased in 2011. It's still going strong after 1 lamp replacement. Having said that, I would have to watch this video a couple more times *however,* my choice will be based on this video. Thank you very much.
FINALLY a review that includes fan noise comparison! i just wish we could actually hear what that might sound like, if we've never heard a laser whine as a first time laser TV purchaser.
Just wanted to say thanks for this video. The amount of detail you put into the comparison was what I was looking for. Was looking to see how the Formovie compared to others, and this was by far more than I hoped for.
Incredible details. Hats off ! I only hope your views get the maximum coverage so that cost of your research gets covered. I sincerely hope your views are non biased and free from any prejudice.
amazing! so much great unique info, you can watch this 10 times and still learn stuff. things like the noise of the unit will be super important for me but i’ve never seen them anywhere else. 10/10.
Wow. Just discovered this channel and I'm absolutely blown away at your attention to detail and methodology. This is the best projector review/comparison I've ever seen. Very well done.
Awesome review! I had to switch over to a UST projector a few years ago. I was no able to do a standard ceiling or wall mount projector. I ended up with a good deal on a 1080 Optoma GT5600 to a 100” screen. Works pretty good, but I hope to upgrade to a 4K UST soon. I went last last night with my 2 sons to see the Avatar Re-release in I-Max 3D at the largest I-Max screen in our state(We saw Top Gun Maverick here as well). I only wish I had the budget and room to install a ultimate theater like this in my home. Much appreciate you doing this much needed review.
This is the best review video I have ever seen. Comparing to the ones only says A projector provides "great" quality, your detailed data supports every single statement and gives me confident on the product I should really choose. I wish I watched your video first!
I wish you would include the Hisense PX1-PRO 4K DLP Laser Projector. I am not sure how this will rank in your comparison. But is a great review for ust projectors
Hands on is always good for reviews. These videos are more trustworthy. I hate people that talk about gear and just read off company’s specs and don’t have hands on the gear they talk about. Anyway, good video. 😎
These reviews are incredibly comprehensive! I love that you go over everything so thoroughly on all the features that actually matter. A lot of other reviewers talk about abstracts that are hard for a newbie to understand. Do you have any thoughts on the CASIRIS A6? I've seen it on a couple lists and it looks promising but you never know what's being exaggerated.
The two I'm most interested in is the Epson EH-LS800B and the Optoma CinemaX D2. I've spent MONTHS looking at ultra short throws and at least on paper, they both look amazing.
I'd probably cross the Optoma CinemaX D2 off that list. I was pretty disappointed not only by the P2 as far as video quality and performance and it also had more RBE than the newer generation of projectors. The LS800 looks very promising, it's been out less than a week so there aren't any real reviews of it yet, just sponsored stuff and dealers. Keep in mind that the LS800 claims 4000 lumens, which would be incredible, but the LS300 claims 3600 and I measured less than 1800.
@@TheHookUp I was a bit surprised that you didn't have any HiSense UST's in the mix. I am in the market and doing research and they seem to typically be pretty popular with most critics. Is there something I should know about HiSense that others are not covering?
This was an amazing comprehensive video. Kind of wish you would have included the LG CineBeam HU915QE Since it’s the one I been think on getting but sure it’s impossible to test so many options out there. Thank you for great Videos.
I grew up always having a rear projection home theatre that my parents love, but in the modern day TV technology is just moving so fast that I don't think I could ever justify the cost. For the same money, TVs look so much better.
85" and under I agree. For me though, projectors are about use of space. All my screens (except one) are floor rising or pull down screens that let me have a big screen in a room when I want, and no wasted space when not in use. We watch our LG C9 60% of the time, but put up the projector screen for movies, big games, and multiplayer video games.
My Sony A95K QD-OLED TV has superior picture quality vs movie theater projectors BUT that TV will NEVER provide the immersion that a high-end projector such as IMAX does.
Great video, I wish you would have included the same tests in a completely dark room for us in a dark theater who will never use them in lighted conditions. I feel the AWOL looks overblown, if you look at the clouds in the images, you cannot even see them in some of the AWOL images.
Amazingly thorough, you indeed touch upon subjects that reviews often skip. You have earned a sub just from this video! EDIT: Just realized you didn't compare with the Hisense offerings. Any reason for that? They're competing for top dog currently and were on my short list.
Best projector review I have ever seen. Thank you! The only other topic I was expecting to see was on chromatic aberration - pink drop shadows visible on white text. The Samsung was pretty bad when first released but maybe they have corrected it? Great to see native support for Dolby Vision. I’m using an HD Fury device to trick the Apple TV into sending DV to my current older LG projector, and could put a couple of these top picks even higher.
Interesting. I do have an HDFury VRROOM but every time I've tried to send DV data to a non DV source it just looks pink and messed up. How are you getting your LG projector to process that data?
@@TheHookUp Probably because it’s an HDFury Vertex 2- it has a decent web interface that lets you customize every aspect of the EDID. AVS forum has a solid thread on it. Happy to share basic settings to get started in the right direction.
Amazing review. The definitive video that helped me commit to one of these projectors. Even more impressive, I came away from watching this with a deeper understanding of the science and field of optics & projector technology! A+
We have two units. We started a couple years ago with a generic brand unit bought from bangood and recently upgraded it to a vava unit. You are correct in saying even the cheap ones look good when not comparing them to anything.a Our cheap Chinese import from bangood could asily project a 200" image onto a all and in a pitch black room it was awesome. The vava unit has a much better picture quality and is much quieter but it's HUGE! You are also right about furniture size being important, we have ours on a TV stand it's very wide at almost seven feet but it's very shallow and the projector hangs off both the front and the back byv about an inch. As a side note it irks me that we have to keep that cabinet almost a foot away from the wall. Lastly, our projector sits in an open upstairs loft. It's generally darker up there as the closest window is 30 feet from the screen. Our kids mainly use it to play video games as I don't like them playing them on my 85" LG. Picture quality wise I would definitely buy a high end 85" over a projector an 85 will be cheaper and produce a much better picture.
Good video and you provided much useful information (including two issues I never would have considered - fan noise and laser whine - because I didn't realize there would be any noise from a UST projector). But I suggest you talk a bit slower in future videos. It is difficult to keep up with your speed of presentation.
I have got a Xgimi Aura for £1475 brand new on ebay, its the best thing I have ever bought. Extremely good quality projector. I strongly recommend it.🙂
Amazing review, really helpful, although it is still difficult to decide between the formovie and the Awol. Just a question, did you already install the new firmware on the Awol that supposed to double the contrast and increase black levels?
I have, it's fantastic. Edit: "double contrast and black levels" definitely needs some ** for marketing speak, but it is great and a significant improvement.
great review, really helped to go for a decision between AWOL3500 & Formovie, think it will be AWOL since is the only one with 3D. Nice channel, you're very good in what you're doing.
Thanks. You’ll be very happy with the AWOL. It’s the projector I’m currently using as my daily and it’s incredible. I occasionally lose track of what is happening in a show because I get so caught up in how good it looks.
Yeah, I was checking out the old budget projector video for Halloween and basically none of the options were available anymore and some were not the same product. The curse of the budget options - they disappear for one reason or another.
Hi , I have LG hu715, the question is which one will be better then LG? Epson eh-ls800 3000$ Samsung lsp9t 3000$ Xgimi aura 2500$ I'm looking for a sharper image very good contrast and black levels Thx for advice
Really good guide, I'm not a projector officianado in any way and this is such a well thought out video. I did get the JMGO O1 pro when it was on Kickstarter so got it for significantly less than its current retail. But I feel I should point out that it does have adjustable feet, not a game changer, but an inconsistency non the less. You also didn't mention what, if any, on board features they have. The O1 pro has Android built in, Alexa and gesture controls. Obviously it's very subjective but I live in a narrowboat where a huge TV ain't possible. But using this machine in a darkened room, which lets face it is how projectors are supposed to be used, is amazing and the speaker set up more than adequate in a very small space. My 11 to can set it up and running within about 8 minutes including screen setup. So for us this machine is amazing, even if it didn't perform well in most of your tests. But thank you for a brilliant video
Thanks for the tip on the adjustable feet, I just double checked and sure enough those little things screw out a little bit. I've added a pinned comment with a correction.
Thanks for the quick reply, I also wanted to ask your opinion of motion handling. I have the LG OLED C8. I think in the review you have a C9. My biggest complaint with my TV is jittery motion, even in slow, panning scenes. I can use the dejudder function, but I then start to see more digital artifacts, which is just as annoying. Do you find the AWOL better? Does the 24fps make this all go away?
Hey there, thank you for teaching me so much. I've watched your whole projector Playlist legitimately 3+ times. I need help. I recently sold my M1+ Viewsonic because I've had it 2 years, it broke 2 times from being fragile and getting in knocked over from its skinny. lever. I just want to try something new. I'm really hoping for something - 720p to1080p - Low input lag for competitive gaming - Small form factor to fit on nightstand to watch on ceiling - Something I can just plug in around different parts of the house, I don't need batteries or battery life. - Preferably sub $500 even sub $300 Small portable projectors are good but your videos describe most as weak lighting, weak battery, low general quality or expensive. Cheap plug in projectors are good but they're all so bulky, they have good picture but they're just so huge and loud From all your videos I can't seem to find a goldilocks projectors that has all that. If yout dont answer thats fine. I thought id shoot my shot. Any suggestions?
This review was very in-depth and informative -- thank you for making it! My only "complaint" about modern TVs is the whole "smart TV" thing. Every Smart TV will eventually become obsolete -- its' software usually becoming obsolete long before the TV wears out. I personally don't care about what's built in, because I use external devices that are much cheaper to replace when they are no longer supported. I bought my father a Roku Ultra last year because his TV no longer worked with the streaming services that were "built in" because the manufacturer no longer supported the (relatively old) TV for updates, etc. I have an Apple TV for my TV -- running on a very old non-smart flat panel -- and in the future when my TV finally dies, I'll replace it (but I've had it for just under 10 years.)
@@TheHookUp Oh yes - It does make it easier to hide a device -- I just don't like smart TVs in general, no matter if they're traditional flat-panels or projectors -- Technology moves so rapidly, that manufacturers stop updating their TVs' software long before the TV itself is ready for the recycler.
Yeah, that's what I'm saying. The AWOL itself has no smartOS, it just controls the fireTV stick through HDMI CEC. You could plug in a roku stick, or an nvidia stick just as easily.
Way out of my price range but one other concern (in my location) is the dust management, given they sit lens open dust would accumulate very fast for me on top (dry geography) and I suspect it's not straightforward to use a wet towel and clean them up
It actually is pretty straightforward. The optics are all inside and are covered by glass on the outside, so you can just towel off the outer glass. The BENQ actually has a mechanism to help with dust where a motorized cover slides over the lens when not in use.
Nah, while I haven't seen it in person, a motorized cover is just another potential point of failure. And it may delay start up depending on how slow it is.
Keeping it covered when not in use helps a lot. I just custom made a half cover for it and so it sits on the back when in use and over the front when not. Never had to wipe it down in a year so far, just gentle blow across the top if pet hair manages to get over the optics.
@@ViciousXUSMC Not that I can afford any of the USTs projectors but my concern is where I live the amount of dust in the air is CRAZY.. Tropical climate with arizona type of large earth areas AND constructions ongoing within 10kms having more dust blown my way lol.. I may be an edge case to be honest wrt the rest of the world but yeah that was why I asked. I suspect if I could afford this projector I would also work on a retracting drawer system to protect the whole projector when not in use :)
Great review. Wish you had gotten the new Epson LS800 that just came out as well. No Dolby Vision but very very bright and no rainbow effect. I'm stuck choosing between that and the Formovie.

This review is amazing. I can only imagine the number of hours that went into the production. You certainly earned my sub with bell.
Thanks!
The best projectors reviewer in the whole internet. Period:)
Thanks!
This review helped me make my decision. I no longer want any projector.
Woowww !!! Amazing job, Amazing review, even covering rainbow effects !! Clearly the best review i have seen in months !!!
Dude, you hit a home run with this review! so much content packed per second. Great work
Wow this must have taken a lot of effort for this review. Well done man. 🙌🏿
Are you planning to do a review of the LS-800? Also top consoderation on my list given specs.
@@askjarrett9017 I'll revisit USTs after CES this year. Hoping we will see some new stuff from HiSense as well.
@@TheHookUp I was a bit surprised that you didn't have any HiSense UST's in the mix. I am in the market and doing research and they seem to typically be pretty popular with most critics. Is there something I should know about HiSense that others are not covering?
Great review - I think either the Formovie or Hisense would be good choices. Your in-depth reviews are of a very high quality. Thanks
Your videos help my search for a decent projector significantly, you rule man!
Wow, the best unbiased review i have found. Thank you!
Just simply one of the best review videos I have ever seen. Awesome job brother!
Great video, I wish you would have included the same tests in a completely dark room for us in a dark theater who will never use them in lighted conditions. I feel the AWOL looks overblown, if you look at the clouds in the images, you cannot even see them in some of the AWOL images.
In a light controlled theater room the formovie is absolutely the correct pick.
Love the review, was really hoping that the Hisense L9/L9g was in your review to compare against the competition.
I am currently in the market. This couldn't have come at a better time!
Amazingly thorough, you indeed touch upon subjects that reviews often skip. You have earned a sub just from this video!
EDIT: Just realized you didn't compare with the Hisense offerings. Any reason for that? They're competing for top dog currently and were on my short list.
Another stellar video. Just added the formovie to my wishlist 😊
Congratulation and thank you for the best Test in this field.
Geez your content is amazing. Excellent presentation all around. Thanks for your time and effort on your content.
🎉😊 whoooohoooo
Definitely one of the very best reviewers out there.
Damn! This review is so comprehensive! Thank you so much for this video! Liked/Subscribed!
I think the VRROOM is basically just a Vertex2 + Arcana combined, so I should be able to pull it off. Mind pointing me to the AVS thread?
wow. you nailed all the questions i ever had such as positioning and noise. thank you!
thanks for this review, i have finally decided to get the xgimi aura! u earn a sub!
So Im assuming the VAVA Chroma is not on the list for a reason?.. 😏 Also BIG UP yourself.. your vids are the gold standard
Well done comparison! I'm super excited to get my Formovie Theater.
Amazing review. The definitive video that helped me commit to one of these projectors. Even more impressive, I came away from watching this with a deeper understanding of the science and field of optics & projector technology! A+
What did you decide on
I appreciate the work that goes into this review. You are awesome.
16:13 nice test design! An awesome way to quantify Rainbow Effect!
I have got a Xgimi Aura for £1475 brand new on ebay, its the best thing I have ever bought. Extremely good quality projector. I strongly recommend it.🙂
That's a great price.
@@TheHookUp Hi, can you please tell me where to get that motorised sliding shelf for projector. I really like the idea.
@@TheHookUp Awesome, did you already had it installed when reviewing it in this video?
@@PatrickdeBruijn No, I installed it in late February 2023.
@@TheHookUp Did you test the 24 fps or Turbo mode for lowest input lag with the new firmware awol unit?
Your videos are always so incredible. Thank you!
Huge effort and great information earns a subscribe!!!
I liked the image in the middle the best. It seems the brightest.
Thanks for the OLED. Seems not so bad in Black levels on Dolby Vision with some of them. Nice.
wow !!! What you did is Crazy ... Thank you !!!
Fantastic job! One of the reviews ever.
Great comparison bro 👏 Thanks for putting in the work it’s very thorough!
I’m confused... lucky winner for what?
Wow man thank you 🙏 this was the best
great review, really helped to go for a decision between AWOL3500 & Formovie, think it will be AWOL since is the only one with 3D. Nice channel, you're very good in what you're doing.
Thanks. You’ll be very happy with the AWOL. It’s the projector I’m currently using as my daily and it’s incredible. I occasionally lose track of what is happening in a show because I get so caught up in how good it looks.
Great. Let's do short throws now. Im lost trying to find something to decorate with (I just made this sent a couple days ago on your budget vid) 😀
Yeah, I was checking out the old budget projector video for Halloween and basically none of the options were available anymore and some were not the same product. The curse of the budget options - they disappear for one reason or another.
This was an excellent review! Thank you!
@TheRealHookUp Thank YOU! Just received my Formovie on Monday, your review helped me with my choice of purchase!
Glad to hear it. That comment was unfortunately from a spambot trying to impersonate me.
@@TheHookUp Hahah I was wondering what I won! 😂
Great and informative. What about the Vava ultra short throw? Where does it stand in comparison to others you have reviewed? Thanks.
Hi , I have LG hu715, the question is which one will be better then LG?
Epson eh-ls800 3000$
Samsung lsp9t 3000$
Xgimi aura 2500$
I'm looking for a sharper image very good contrast and black levels
Thx for advice
I bought Samsung , first compering Side bei side and the different is significant, it is absolutely worth 500$ extra
An excellent comparison. Congratulations
Thank you so much for sharing!!!
@@TheHookUp hello, tried sending message on Telegram as per email I received from you but no contact came up, is it because I'm in the UK?
@@GMullerafloat That was a scammer, I don't send emails to subscribers or use telegram.
Amazing work and one of the best videos I have seen on UST comparisons. However why not include the Epson LS500 since it's 4K and has 3D as well.
Epson LS500 is a discontinued model, LS800 is their new flagship.
Best ultra short throw comparison, wish you could soon do epson ls800, thank you guy
Love the comparison, thanks for all the review . . . Where will the Xiaomi laser one fall over all?
Thanks so much for all the hard work. One question, how is the 3D viewing on the AWOL? Do any other UST support 3D?
I don't love 3D to start with, but the AWOL handles it very well.
In this video the Optoma, XGIMI, JMGO, Nexigo, BENQ, and AWOL support 3d.
I'm really hoping for something
- 720p to1080p
- Low input lag for competitive gaming
- Small form factor to fit on nightstand to watch on ceiling
- Something I can just plug in around different parts of the house, I don't need batteries or battery life.
- Preferably sub $500 even sub $300
Small portable projectors are good but your videos describe most as weak lighting, weak battery, low general quality or expensive. Cheap plug in projectors are good but they're all so bulky, they have good picture but they're just so huge and loud
From all your videos I can't seem to find a goldilocks projectors that has all that.
If yout dont answer thats fine. I thought id shoot my shot.
Any suggestions?
are you freaking kidding me with these bots????
The AWOL LTV-3500 solves that with their streaming stick compartment.
@@TheHookUp Ooooh! I misunderstood - my apologies and thank you for telling me lol.. My head's a bit thick sometimes ;-)
Thank you! My favorit XGIMI AURA.
@@TheHookUp So I guess the Benq takes back the lead!! PLOT TWIST!! XD
Yes, I asked if he will be able to review if he can get his hands on one. Down to the Formovie and the Epson for me as well.
@@elduderino3808 @The Hook Up - You're welcome to borrow mine!
well done to you sir, for the effort, time and money to put this all together.🙌
Great breakdown but I really wish you would've included the Epson EH-LS800.
LS800 unfortunately hadn't been released at the time I was making this video.
Best reviewer. Guarantee 💯
These videos are amazing. I would love to see where the Epson LS800 sits in this mix.
LS800 should be in the next installment in October.
