1988 Chevrolet Suburban Budget Transformation! Fresh stance and wheels for the old squarebody Burb!

- Опубліковано 5 жов 2024
- I picked up this 1988 Chevrolet Suburban Scottsdale package locally. It's super dry for our climate and it runs and drives surprisingly well for what it is. But since we can't leave anything well enough, lets make it our own and get it a little closer to the earth and address any issues along the way! I'm getting attached to this one and I've got a TON of labor into it thus far but I'd let it go in the as seen condition for $6,500. If you don't like the price, move along! As always, thanks for watching!

Seems like it would be easier to just C notch the axle instead of the frame.
😂🤣
This is why they pay you the big bucks!
Put in a nasty BBC have some fun
You're joking, right? Tell me you're joking. 😂 (Yes, I'm joking)
I was thinking he shoulda just put the rear axle in a tubing bender and bent it around the frame (insert sarcastic smirk here)
So blessed to have so many cool projects to work on..
Better than any TV car show. Keep it up Mortske! Greets from Germany!
Thanks Michael

Hell yeah, here we go folks! It's Mortske monday!
Ah, memories. I remember when my mom bought one in 88 brand new. It was our family’s first brand new rig. I was 10, and she used to let me drive it around the ranch. One day it rained like mad (I think I was 13 by this time) and my buddies and I took it for a rip around the property when my mom was out and got it stuck. She got home before we finished digging it out of the mud and she was pretty pissed, but part of our punishment was to detail it when it stopped raining, and we absolutely loved it! Hahaha
Bahaha good times
Ac is very rewarding to get working. I fixed the rear air in my 99 Tahoe last year. I was proud. Yes to ac work!
Nice work!
If it entailed all the work that my 99 Suburbans rear air entailed, you Should be Proud!
@@JohnDoe-pv2iu I used a company called “auto cooling solutions” the replacement lines are soft so it’s really easy to run. Also the Tahoe doesn’t have a rear heater core so one less thing to worry about.
For a 34 year old 'Burban that frame is absolutely spotless! She's certainly been avoiding the salt anyway, stuff here (Western Scotland) is usually already flaking at 2-3 years old 🙄
Sure is
Much like a car from New York.
@@lbindert I'm from New Mexico and thankfully we don't worry about rust. I went to Walmart and a early 90's Chevy van was parked and holy rust bucket, like a foot down the the entire side bumper to bumper and the frame it was unsafe. I looked at the plate and it was from New York. Crazy
@@JonJon-fn2vq LOL 😆, Yes I remember those days. Thankfully I left Buffalo NY in 1974. As a kid I had a raggedy 63 Ford Falcon. If you didn't know somebody who knows somebody it never would have 'passed' inspection. When you closed the doors the skins would flap and really flap at let's say 35mph. So I took the doors off! Sure I got pulled over but NY says you have to have a hood over the motor and fenders over the tires, didn't say anything about doors
2+ hours of pure entertainment. Thanks Mortske and Duffalupigus! Great shape for up up North!
Thanks for watching David!
I worked for a company that installed chicken house equipment in the early 90s and we had an 84 for a work vehicle. That was the toughest thing I ever drove after 2 years it didn't have a straight panel on it. But it was power everything and had a 454 bb. It was an awesome vehicle.
Awesome sauce says Lisa and Julie. The twin credit card sisters from a few years ago.
Discover card Sisters.
I worked for a grocery store as a local Driver 30 years and i LOVED that Job now i am retired and wish i was back at it.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Love my job, I've been there twenty years. I lead a team that tests warranties on music instruments. We also setup guitars before they're shipped to stores.
That thing has been down a few gravel roads in the past! The interior is full of dusty remnants. It is clean for a square body. Nice find! I bet it will hold lots of birds and beers this fall!
I'm a conductor for Amtrak and I actually love my job. Almost as much as I love these videos. Great stuff!
Awesome!
Awesome sauce.
man i cant belive how clean that burb is. concidering the amount rust most everything seems to get up there. its shocking. but nice find!!! love them old sqaure bodys!
It’s pretty good
My uncle use to buy a new Suburban every 3 years back in the day for him his wife and 3 children. Bringing back my childhood watching this video.
I've owned 5 Suburbans in my life, from 1965 thru 2003. I loved every one of them. Great rigs!!. 2 of them were square body's and they were my favorite. As far as going to work..... Every day of my 40+ year career, I wised I was retired. Hated going to work. Now that I'm retired, I'm loving it !!
congrats on retirement!

I'm a full time Diesel mechanic. Part time small engine mechanic. I wouldnt change it for nothing. I enjoy my job.
Fun times!
Great Condition on the Burb. Didn't think I'd be a fan of a Low riding Burb, but that's 100% practical. Good job young man.
Thanks 👍
Another great video. Really enjoy the longer ones. I'd love to own that car but for now I'll just have to enjoy the decals which arrived today. Super quality. Thanks again Mortske, Duff and of course Chin.
Awesome!
I LOVE my job! But then, I'm retired now. I just do a whole bunch of whatever the heck I want. Recommended. 😎👍
Brilliant! I bet your boss sucks!
I love my job!!! I am a prophylactic restoration engineer in Vietnam. I Been doing it for about 6 months now, it's going pretty good.
Good morning Mort, that Suburban's looking pretty sweet. White mirrors w/new paint, matches the wheels. Might want to skid-plate the fuel cell. Have a great day and be good. 👍
I agree, smaller white mirrors look better
white wheels, no caps.
The plate is perfect! I say that all the time!😂😂 I still like the white mirrors with the white wheels, but it’s your rig! Either way will look great! I like the plans you have in mind for this if it doesn’t sell! It’s kind of a clean whiteboard to work with!🙄😂 You and Chin did a great job as usual!
Thanks so much!!
I love watching you make a part you don’t have for a beater with a rotten frame because you love what you do and a good challenge. Duff’s killing it with the hoods.
Chief Engineer on a tugboat. 21 days on, 21 days off. It was rough work in rough conditions with rough men. Hauled freight and cargo anywhere from the Great Lakes to the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean.
I loved it.
Nice
I like the white mirrors better. A nice respray like you did the wheels would look great. Keep up the good work, the truck looks great! Yes on AC work please.
Thanks
Great Content As Usually. I love the white wheels and mirrors. I'd paint the mirrors white for sure . Don't sell this one . Totally cool as hell .
Totally agree!
Man that thing is mint! I bought a 91 a year ago to replace the body on my 83 (a tree fell on it), and it is not as rust free as that one... and the one I bought lived in Florida.
Isn't there saltwater in Florida?
@@mwilliamshs Quite. And lots of humidi-tye.
So in the presence of humidity and corrosive water, isn't rust on a 30 year-old vehicle a foregone conclusion?
@@mwilliamshs It depends more upon stagnation of the air. Up where I lived in Virginia, same humidity, same salt water, but more constant motion of air.
@@mwilliamshs Just for example, I have a 49 chrysler that was stored inside in a drafty building (edit) in Portsmouth, VA (end edit) with a concrete floor from 1979 until 2006. I towed it down to Southwest GA in 2006 and it was stored for 10 years in a storage unit here... in 2016, i was forced to relinquish the storage unit and store the car outside... now it has surface rust all over it because there simply isn't a constant, or even sporadic, wind enough to dry the moisture quickly enough... nevermind the heat of the sun... that obviously isnt enough in this area. There are days and even weeks where the wind doesn't blow at all and the dew takes most of the day to burn off.. In Norfolk, VA, there is almost always a 10 knot wind from the Nor'East, despite the salt water proximity.
Honestly I started watching a couple days ago, and I found out this is both nice to learn from, and fall asleep to
Glad to hear it!
I enjoyed the first 30 years of my job the last 14 sucked, retirement is awesome. That suburban looks pretty clean underneath it's worth the time to do it right.
Mortske, fine job on the Suburban. That’s a nice vehicle. I was concerned about the rear wheels and how they fit. Fortunately no terrible result. Paint the white mirrors, they match the white wheels nicely. They sharpen the look. Paint the old rear wheels white and your super look will be back. Great job buddy. Big Al.
Not into low riders, but love your work and jokes!🚔🚨💪😁
Glad to hear it
Another great video. I learn something every time. Great job mortski maybe a crash plate for the gas tank might be a wise move. The dimples on the rims would have put me over the edge
I drive an 18 wheeler across the country and love it because I get to see a lot of different things that most people don’t really get to see
I’m not going to lie , I’m here for the Duff cam !!! , what a sweet low rider . Cheers 🇨🇦
Nice square body find👍 Survivers like this one are far n few. Thanks for sharing Mortske 😎👍 if seafoam gas treatment brings the temp down, the valves are sticking.👍
I can understand a lift kit to increase clearance and/or larger wheels. But dropping a truck I see no value whatsoever. So after the first half hour of carnage I had to jump way forward. Good work on the rest of the vehicle. For the age it is in really great shape to work with. Would be interesting to hear a follow up about the issue on the wheels not fitting correctly. Looking forward to maybe a part two.
Lowering a 2 wheel drive truck improves appearance bout the same as lifting or leveling a 4WD does.
Larger wheels do what for a city truck?
I enjoy your channel. You are funny and entertaining. I am not a fan of lowering vehicles, particularly trucks. I’m sorry, I have to say it. It a very unattractive, function destroying fad. That suburban in now useless as a truck, probably even as a mode of transportation. I’m old sorry, just my opinion.
Amen, Mortske, love your channel, but definitely not a fan of Cholo Chevys.
To each their own. I guess I've been using it daily. Way to have an open mind tho!
@@MortskeRepair Looks awesome, for an SD truck. I'm in WI they look like swiss cheese around here. keep working on them squares. 81-82 are the best. (My opinion.) great job.
White mirrors for sure. I normally don't like painted bumpers either, but white painted bumpers too would make this look perfect. I had a short bed C10 that was blue with white mirrors, bumpers and rallys.....everybody loved the look and kept making offers on it.
Nowadays, with my partner still working (ironically in a government department) I am a kept man. I potter in my garage or garden and work on classic cars. I am learning a lot about their restoration and having an absolute blast in my chosen second career, although I still keep my hand in the computer arena from time to time, with advice to old colleagues and engineers I have enjoyed working with. Do I miss it? Truth be told, I do miss the technology. The one thing I do not miss is the people, who only get hold of you when they want something or it is broken, they are always in a harried rush and take it personally when their computer throws a rod because they screwed with it or ignored the computer's equivalent of an oil light for six months and who, no matter how much you show them your expertise in many areas, will always describe you as someone who "works with computers". I'll take this semi-retirement at the age of 52 any day!
Glad to hear it Lance!
I had an 86 identical to that one in high school, same color everything... some goooood memories.
I love my job! Aircraft mechanic. Gotta go through 18 months of school but it's totally worth it
I have my own tiny auto shop and a LLC. I just enjoy fixing cars and trucks all day- helping people in the process. Just be the cheapest guy in town, be honest and reliable- youll have more stuff to fix than you can by yourself and more than enough money for fun stuff. I think that sub is Duff's favorite truck ever- he was really into that one!
I like the white mirror and bumper…
Those hub caps are the best ever !!!
Now you look like Mortske knows what he's doing. Duff Mortske said I watched him do it and he approved the quality work 💯%😊
Oh man, I've had those days at work! I'm a diesel mechanic in a city garage...buses, fire trucks, dump trucks, you name it, I've probably had to fix it. I love the diversity and diagnostic challenges. We're always short handed... send Duff!
Fun times
Congrats Mortske on doing the job on the 88 Sub.
Thanks Billy
Love them mid to late 80s burbans and blazers! Really wish there were some round here!
The chrome mirrors look good, they match the bumpers! White wheels with the caps. Nice rig! Thanks for the Great video!
I have a 1976 pacer x brilliant blue with Levi's blue interior not Levi material but that was what the color is called. In high school I had chopped a hole in the dash and put in a cd player and had a cd with 16 different versions of bohemian rapisdy. It took me 15 years to find a replacement dash section but high-school me thought it was a good idea. I don't have a gremlin but I have two eagle kammbacks which is basically a 4x4 gremlin with a eagle front end. Love your videos I am a amc guy normally but I keep buying g20 chevy van's so I can appreciate all the chevy builds. My pops had a 1972 k 5 blazer 2wd that he bought new 350 4 speed red with a black top, posi chrome bumpers and a radio delete. Great videos you and duff dog stay safe.
I did the same thing in HS, still haven't fixed it tho.
Would love to cruise in that burban. White mirrors for sure. Don't shine up the blue at all, the patina look is perfect.
I like the chrome mirrors and hub cabs looks sharp Great job you do on the vehicles specially those stubborn seized engines enjoy your show
Yes to the AC stuff. An yippers to the rumble. Oh, the memories.
Always enjoy learning from you and Duff! I once drove a salvaged electrical fire square body suburban 500 miles with a melted instrument panel with speedo bouncing between 0 and 100 like a clock pendulum. I did get a little shiver with the frame axle notch. Instead of a 4" pipe cut in half for a 2" high notch, consider a 6" or 8" pipe cut for same 2" high notch. This will create a slight crescent shaped/tapered notch. Also, if space allows, consider extending your "notch tube" outboard of the frame rail, welded inside and outside, as well as extended below the rail, welded top and bottom. The slight taper and double fillet welds could help minimize stress concentration and strengthen notch.
Extend the pipe beyond the frame, so it's wider, and weld it inside and outside.
How is access gained to weld this pipe *inside* the frame? Welding outside the frame on the body side and in the middle isn't easy but it's logical. Welding *inside* the frame...you gotta explain that
Who needs self driving cars, this suburban does it already! Great vehicle. I'm a piano mover by day, tinkerer, restorer the rest of the time.
My back is sore thinking about that.
@@MortskeRepair Yep. 25 years now. Raised my 2 sons by doing it and a 59 Cadillac in the garage. Life is good.

Really appreciate that you take the time and effort to reply to us subscribers. Especially as you're now at over 100k. Means a lot, thanks.
My pleasure!
I need to try and find you an entire NOS set of those vintage "Pleasurizer" shocks! That would be Hilarious! You'd have to carry around one of those undercarriage car show mirrors to slide underneath the vehicle you put them on everytime you park it. 😂😂😂
That would be great!
Jus found this channel bc of puddins channel and ive been bingeing your videos for days! Such good stuff and already learned alot! Oh a Duff is such a good boy!
Re: the AMC content- growing up, our neighbor across the street was lead salesman at an AMC dealership. Because of him, by the age of 13 I had seen just about everything AMC produced at one time or another.
When I was going thru the local Community College for me ASE cert, they had a brown and tan Suburban just like this, I think it was an 87, but we put a reman jasper 350 the owner bought. It was a nice rig, tan interior. Me and my shop buddies broke in that baby around the campus. It was quite fun! That was 20 years ago. It was perfect inside and out. I wonder what ever happened with it. I miss having access to a tire machine and balancer.
Awesome!

If you ask me I feel your channel is way better then horsepower TV.....kinda having a hard time if I want to watch these football games or learn about these old schools..
I had an 86 with the silverado package, had beauty rings, electric windows and locks , tailgate, 350 with a quadrapuke, owned it for about 20 years, still running when i sold it in 2006, replaced 3 trannys and 2 rear ends and the carb was pooched, loved that truck. @@MortskeRepair you’re welcome very inspiring, i may work on what was my dads 72 fire chicken today, I’m so ready to drive it, but I have 3sons and a disabled daughter and that requires a lot of attention , maybe one day
When I flipped the rear on my 91 dodge d150 I had similar axle to frame clearance. Worked ok, but with a good load it would smack the frame. Didn’t wanna notch it, tossed some Monroe air shocks in. Pump them up when you need to haul something, had an issue again.
I'm a maintenance supervisor at 2 factories. Every day is another project. Fixing cars would be the ideal job but it doesn't pay the bills as well. I don't LOVE going in to work but don't hate it either. Just a tech tip... when welding on a lathe make sure to hook your ground to the actual part and not to the frame of the lathe. I had a buddy do something similar to you and fried the spindle bearings when he welded. Your mileage may vary.
Yup. Gpa always told us that

Definitely a nicer than average looking rig that you found there. I agree with you, the white side mirrors definitely go with the white steel wheels, but if you're going in another direction for wheels then it'd just depend on what you chose. Not often you can find running and driving from the 80's that isn't some serious $$. Great video, really enjoy your channel.
