This is the perfect beginner project to sew with my children. Thank you for another great tutorial!
Thank you so much for making this video. I’ve been looking for this exact tutorial for weeks now and then I stumbled on this video by accident. You gained a follower and my eternal appreciation because this is everything I’ve been looking for!!
I just did this tonight using the 2nd method with Halloween fabric from my stash. My daughter loves it. I am learning a lot from your videos. I also made my son a carseat poncho with your instruction. Your videos are very clear and easy to follow. I like that I can sew along by just hitting pause and nothing is lost along the way.
That's so awesome! I love to hear when people are making new things using my videos :)
Thank you for using bright fabrics with differnt patterns. It's so helpful!
This is a fabulous bag! I’ve used your second method at least a dozen times. Thank you for sharing!
You're welcome! Glad it's been helpful for you.
Your tote bag tutorials are the best! So easy to follow and well explained. I especially like your idea of using a dog leash from the Dollar store. Great idea! I have made many totes using your instructions but this one is the best! Thank you!
Thank you! I'm so glad you like the tutorial :)
I am just getting Into sewing and I wanted to tell you how much all of your videos have helped me ! I have made pillow cases and some tote bags so far !
Thank you! I just made my first bag for my granddaughter.
Hi Whitney, thank you so much for the video! I had made one of these before but forgot how I did it. One quick tutorial from you helped me plus I got extra tips! Well done. Love your work!
I love your videos. i am a newbie. You give me so much confidence.
Awesome! I hope you will give some of my projects a try and let me know how they turn out :)
love the collar idea.
with all the different colors of collars it should be easy to match it up with fabric. will definitely try this...
Awesome! Let me know how yours turns out if you try it :)
Thanks! Your instructions are so easy to follow.
Brilliant video and looks so easy to follow! Can't wait to try this later :) x
i love it that you used a dog leash for the handles! So creative. Cute bags :)
Thanks! Glad you liked it :)
You have taught me so much. Love your style and efficiency.
Thank you! I'm so glad my videos have been helpful for you :)
quick and simple. love the fabric. thanks Whitney!
Thanks! Glad you liked it!
Definitely a simple way to create a tote bag. Thank you. I also perfer the second method. :)
Yes, very simple and easy! Glad you liked it :)
I love the idea of using the dollar store dog leash! so smart!
Thanks! I've been doing that for years...need to go stock up because I'm about to run out.
I love it,your girls are so lucky you can make so many cute things
Thanks!
I have used both these methods in my bag making and think method 2 is easier - love your Disney fabric :)
Thank yoU!
So smart using Dollar Tree leashes! After collecting a few pieces of the unused hardware you can make key chains or a bag clasp with those parts.
Yep! I keep all the hardwear and reuse it for other projects! I picked up some dog collars too and the D rings and clasps are super useful :)
Love the leash as the strap...great idea! Thanks
Thanks :)
These are really cute Whitney!
Thank you!
Thank you so much for your videos. I've learned so much from you! I really like how simple and easy to follow the direction. I was about to make a tote bag for spring season and this video will be a great help!
Can you post a tutorial how to make a zippered tote bag? I saw some postings but not easy to follow for a beginner like me. = )
Thank you! I'm so glad my videos are easy for you to follow and learn from! I'm wanting to make a zippered tote, but not sure how soon I'll get to it.
I bought 100 of the 7" zippers at ebay for right under $13.:) I've used them for several of your zippered bags that you did a video on, and I think the zippers are fine. They aren't the heavy duty; however, I looked at Walmart for zippers that were similar and they cost $1 each.
Hi Whitney! Love your show.. would really love to see a video on how to had side pockets to shirts and skirts....
Great request! I'll add it to my list :)
Thanks Whitney! Love this and the fabric!
Thanks! The fabric is from a vintage sheet I picked up at the thrift store :)
I like the second bag its seems to be more sturdy .
Awesome tutorial! I like the second method also. Lisa
Thank you! Glad you liked it :)
Here is the method I use and it is the fastest one I know. Cut 2 pieces of fabric - one for the outside, one for the lining. If you want your bag 10” wide, then for the width cut it 21” wide so you have a ½” seam. Put your outside material face up. Pin your straps where you want them on it. Next put your lining on top of this - face down. Sew completely across the top attaching the straps, lining, and basic material together. Open it up; fold it in half lengthwise. Your wrong side of fabrics will be facing out. Start sewing the entire long length. (This means you start at the lining and go down the side of the main fabric, then across the bottom of the main fabric. Turn everything right side out, putting the lining inside your bag. The bottom of the lining is not sewed. Go ahead and sew it. You are done. You can make these so fast, depending on how you sew anywhere from 15 minutes plus. Hope you understood my directions.:)
Thanks for sharing your method! It's been a long time since I've seen that one used so I had forgotten all about it.
Well, I think the ways you showed are great. I have learned so much from you over the years. You are so creative! Since I frequently make these bags for a variety of reasons, I'm all about speed for much of the time and the way I shared is super fast. If someone is going through hardships, etc. I buy the small inspirational/religious books and make a very small bag to put the book in. Those gifts have been well received. BTW, I used your link and bought the cutter and the blades from Amazon. Thanks for the tips.
Emily Smith please do a video with this fast method. Thanks!
Emily Smith, I just took two pieces of paper for the lining and outside, then more for the straps, marking accordingly before I attempted to follow your instructions. Makes perfect sense to me now! Thank you.
Thank you sooo much for allll the ideas
Cute bags and very easy!
Thanks! Super quick to make!
great idea to use dollar tree dog leash for straps. very inexpensive and sturdy. ☺🐩
I was thinking the very same thing; brilliant.
Mind blown on using dollar tree dog leash!! Why didn’t I think of that?
This tutorial is fantastic! Thanks!
What’s your best recommendation for measuring out your fabric? Do you use paper templates?
I am new to this, in case it wasn’t obvious... 😝
I rarely make paper templates unless it's an unusual shape. I use two acrylic rulers at once to measure and cut with a rotary cutter on a rotary safe mat.
4/8/22: This was a cute video. Thank you for doing it. I have an off-the-wall question, though. When making a tote bag with a square bottom, or any kind of tote bag for that matter, should the lining always be the same size as the outer fabric with the same seam allowances throughout? I sometimes have problems getting it right. There are some who say that one should increase the lining fabric by 1/2" all around, while others say it's best to leave it at the same size all around, but then there are some who say that the lining should be the same widthwise as the fabric, but the length should be 1/2" longer, so I'm confused. HELP!
Good question. I always cut them to be the same size and (when I remember) will take a slightly larger seam allowance on the lining. Just 1/8 inch or so can make a difference. I would rather have the lining a little baggy than tight fitted. The lining fabric is often thinner on most of my bags it isn't sturdy enough to actually take the weight of whatever is being put into the bag unless so I leave if a little baggy and the outer fabric is what is holding everything in the bag. Hope that makes sense.
@@Whitney_Sews 5/22/22: Wow, it sure does makes sense. It was a touch and go case of confusion for me, but I get it now and know how to proceed going forward. I especially like the idea of going in 1/8" on the lining. I don't like too baggy of a lining in my bags, but believe me, I've had my moments -- ugh! But I'm happy (and confident) now that I've got the 411 from you. Thank you so much, Whitney. I appreciate it. 😊
maybe a video on reusable snack bags? I use the plastic ones all the time and would love to use reusable ones for my kids
I'll add it to my list and see what I can do :)
⛤⛦⛦⛧⛧ SO EASY FOR BEGINNERS, THANKS SO MUCH LOOKING FOR MORE EASEY IDEAS FOR GIFTS FROM YOU 🙄🙄
Thats very cute!
Awesome directions 👍
Thank you! Glad you liked it :)
Hi where do you get the fabric from? I would like to get one with a picture of a giant panda. Can you get the fabric on amazon or eBay
Ths large character print fabric was a vintage bed sheet I thrifted and cut up
Would you Please do one making a Drawstring Round circle bottom Lined. Bag. Putting Cords to close both ends.
I'll keep it in mind for upcoming videos :)
As always I love how frugal you are, I dont comment too much, but I been watching your channel way back when threadbangers did sewing videos, basically forever in internet time I guess.
I'm personally working on turning cotton adult shirts in to dresses with sleeves for my daughter (and the schools dress code) I would love to see some stuff along that line.
Thanks! I totally remember you being around a long time :) That sounds like such a cute project. I'll add it to my list and see if I can come up with a fun version for Peyton!
Wow, are you psychic? I was just getting ready to make a tote bag out of some of my scraps for holding books. Brilliant idea to use a Dollar Store dog leash for straps, that strap material is not cheap at Jo-ann's.
Awesome! I'm glad the video came at just the right time :)
I like the 2 nd one best !!!!
Me too :)
On the second method how do you close then small gaps? Hand sew?
I just top stitched it closed about 1/8 inch from the folded edges with the seam allowances tucked inside
Thank you. :)
Whitney, did I miss where you gave the length of the handles? Love this tutorial but seem to have missed that part somehow...maybe I need to go watch another video...hmmm
I can't remember if I included that or not. You can always measure a bag you already have and base it on that.
@@Whitney_Sews I don't have kids, so no kids bags. Wanted to make one for a neighbour's little girl. No worries.
Hi there love you video - like the second one best - thanks p.g.
I see tote bags being sewn after Easter.
Awesome! I hope you share pics of the totes you make :)
Where do you get the fabric?
+lamya moataz It was a bedsheet I cut up
Whitney Sews you are incredibly amazing...I just found you on youtube and am in love with your work

Could you possibly do a tutorial on a bag like this one, a boxed tote bag with a drawstring bag lining? www.studio-clip.jp/material/handmade/ohashi03c.html?epik=0z5ItE_IWH6Nw I absolutely love it but can't find a tutorial that's in English that I can follow :)
zippered tote tutorial :)
HI, I was hoping to send you a small package with some fabric that i thought you might like. Do you have a P.O. Box?
I don't have a PO box, sorry. But I really appreciate you thinking of me!
