  • We're in North Qunicy, MA to review a Waquiez Amphitrite 43 listed at a bargain price of $39,900. Is this the ultimate world-cruising, bluewater sailboat? Captain Q visits North Quincy, MA. Fatty Goodlander thinks this is the boat to cruise the world with and he knows a thing or two about what makes a great ocean cruiser. Ergonomics, price, comfort, safety are all things we talk about with this seemingly great deal.

    My wife and I had an Amphitrite 43 in the early 1990s for about 5 years. The original models were actually sold as kits for owners to finish (in the late 70s), so many of them had various layouts. Our layout was different (and standard for '84 straight from the factory) from this one. The aft cabin took up the entire aft portion of the boat. The aft head was larger, and the passage to the aft cabin had full headroom along with two dedicated pilot berths. The galley was a bit smaller, because they had reduced the size of the freezer to have a counter that folded down to give access to a door that entered the large cockpit locker from the galley. The engine access was great. The doors to the engine in the aft passage opened as in your video, but the entire panel under the gang way came off, as well as a large door inside the cockpit locker (accessible through the galley). So three entire sides of the engine were completely able to be open when working on it. We retained the teak deck, and even though it did need to be redone before we sold it, I loved the feel of teak under my feet at night or in a storm. We also had in-mast mainsail furling. You are correct about the cockpit - many a night sail in various conditions were done on autopilot, reading a book (with a red light), drinking a Heineken - watching for other boats or lights. The cockpit was very secure.
    We bought it in France, and used it there for the first few years whenever we had time. It was really well equipped by the time we took off. Before leaving, I installed more electronics, which needed a larger grounding plate. I found out that the hull thickness at the chine was about 10 inches thick! The boat was built like a tank that actually sailed great. The hull shape, the hefty skeg-hung rudder, and the lengthy keel gave it good bones. We finally took a two year sabbatical and sailed it to the Caribbean and South America before bringing it to Solomon's Island in MD to sell (and get back to work and buy a house for my wife - that was the deal to go sailing....). In a heavy sea with gale force winds, this boat is absolutely wonderful - no pounding, and it sailed upwind and down with real purpose - and was handled by the autopilot (NECO) in difficult conditions with ease. In a light breeze, it moved easily - and at all times it had a nice motion. It was easily sailed by one person, and every trip that we took was a real pleasure - (with navigation by Russian military Navy sextant - no GPS yet). It was kind of a pig to reverse into a tight slip, but I cannot think of another boat that I would rather sail in the open ocean. Even though I am now over 70, I would feel confident taking the equivalent of our boat out to sea again.
    Excellent review!

    We made the mistake of coming to the Treasure Coast of Florida to shop for our live aboard. 100 boats later, apparently, routine maintenance, much less preventative, is non-existent here! The amount of wood rot and mold in them, soft decks, is horrific, AND they're newer and higher priced than ALL of Captain Q's videos! Heading up north! 😲🤭🤯

    This one has a lot of what I'm looking for:
    Over 40' -- check:
    Yawl of ketch - check:
    Beamy - check;
    Inexpensive -- check:and
    Motor is probably a write-off -- check.
    I want to restore an older beauty like her and replace diesel with electric regen.
    I'm not at all put off by aft cabin access. I think I'd replace the aft "desk/office' to make room for a proper stand-up shower and/or move the chart table back.

    Questions:
    Good bones?
    Headroom?
    Sail inventory and standing rigging?
    Is she still for sale?
    I like her a lot too. Please find me one just like her but with more headroom, preferably on the west coast! 😁🤓😁🤓❤️ Sweet boat, though. Thanks for sharing.

    For this price you could afford a water maker and genset and update the electronics. The cockpit although, safe...if you have been in a 18 to 20 foot sea it would have to be enclosed. Three or four hours in that open cockpit would absolutely be insane. Plenty of room yes but tight... which is a must for rough seas. Plenty places to hold on and wedge yourself in. Below deck you would feel snug and safe.

A lot of space inside and really seaworthy. 39 kUsd is a really good bargain for this boat. +60 kusd are usually asked for this boat in Europe. Cpt. mentioned that second masts require less sail area. He didn’t mention how much more balanced ketches and yaws are with more sail plan options and less stress on rig than sloop Marconi rigs. I would take a ketch over a sloop any day. Hope this helped.

    Late commenting. You don't mention her low SA/Displacement ratio. (But then, you never seem to delve into such important details.) Maybe she will be fine in regular to heavy trade winds, but not in light to moderate breezes. Will definitely need a mizzen staysail.

    Realize if someone really wants to get into any boat they can, but what’s to stop a person from just opening the back hatch and easily enter the boat when the owners are away? Also, are misen masts more of a hassle, especially for solo sailing?

    How much would it cost to have a new engine put in? I've heard $25,000 and more if it has to be disassembled to get the engine out. that may be why it's so much cheaper than others on the market.

    • @YachtHunters
      @YachtHunters  3 роки тому +2

      Yes that sounds like a good estimate. We figured you could do a rebuild for about $10k and to replace it would be right around $25k. Although, given the overall great condition of the boat our hunch was that it would pass a survey and you’d have some time to sort it out.

    I'd like to hear what you have to say about water storage volume and engine/ generator fuel storage. also I have yet to see any boat with a solar or wind generator or inverters. just getting into the idea of a live aboard that is blue water capable. I live in Florida and would ultimately like to sail the world

    Just a thought.... Wouldn't that huge, deep, extravagant cockpit become a near olympic size pool should you catch a wave the wrong way? I really like your channel and what you do here but I think a cockpit along the lines of a Hans Christian Traditional might be more ocean worthy.

    No such thing as a blue water sailboat, Webb Chiles just completed his 5th circumnavigation in a Moore 24 without even standing headroom, for a seasoned sailor every sailboat is a round the world boat, with a novice sailor no boat is

    • @YachtHunters
      @YachtHunters  3 роки тому +10

      I cant argue that and there are so many stories about sailors doing it in cockleshells that all boats are probably "blue" water ..it begs the question are the owners blue water sailors! I keep scooping up glasses of water and actually haven't found any of it to be blue...lol
      thanks for watching

    I miss the old Captain. I hope he's doing well. QUESTION: Why can't they make reliable teak decks, they're so good looking, but every old boat with them either has had them removed, or should have them removed.
