This song/video is based off a book written in 1938 called Johnny Got His Gun. Its a is a powerful novel that tells the haunting story of a young soldier who is severely wounded in World War I and left without limbs or senses, questioning the true cost of war. It was banned in 1941 and in 1971 was made into a movie. The scenes in the video are clips from the movie.
Metallica put out 3 albums before this album and this is the first video they ever made. It was HUGE. As a big fan of the first 4 albums this was epic to see on TV.
The look in your eyes shows how powerdul the images and the music. Stoked for this brother!!
    Much love!!!!

Enter Sandman Moscow 1991. Here’s the story: American music was BANNED in Russia. But they had bootleg copies of Metal smuggled in. The youth in the country helped thwart a hostile takeover. Their leaders asked them what they wanted as a reward/thank you… for basically helping to save the country. The youth said: WE WANT AMERICAN HEAVY METAL. WE WANT METALLICA. They contacted the bands, FLEW THEM INTO MOSCOW and held a free concert. People often say that 1.9 million people showed up but, in reality, they stopped counting at 1.9 million. It’s estimated that 2.5 MILLION people attended that concert.
We take our music for granted. Just IMAGINE what it meant to them to have those bands play for them. You can see it for yourself.
Considering all the madness gripping Russia in the last few years and the last week… I think we owe it to them to remind ourselves just how valuable our human freedoms are. Peace to all! ☮️.

My youth (that I can remember as far as music goes) would have been from about 81 to about 1998. 4th grade through grad school, baby! (and then youth died) That's from Van Halen to Beck. From Bon Jovi to Rob Zombie. From Duran Duran to Marilyn Manson. From Run DMC to Eminem. U2... The Pixies... Primus... Information Society... Tori Amos... Lenny Kravitz... Red Hot Chili Peppers... and, yes, Metallica.

The video is using footage and dialogue from the 1971 film, Johnny Got His Gun. Based on the *BANNED* book of the same name; it was a WWI anti-war story of a soldier who lost his limbs, eyes and ability to speak.
The government was afraid parents would read the book, and refuse to send their children to fight in Europe. The movie came out in 1971, at the height of the Vietnam War, and was also banned for similar reasons.

Metallica was begged to make a video. They gave the world this masterpiece. The world couldn't handle the content and made them release a "jamming version". Fun fact. Good times!

@@StaxReacts It really was groundbreaking, for the time. Metallica bought the rights to the movie, to avoid paying royalties and because James was obsessed with it.

Album version is much better. Every reactor does this music video and sure it kinda goes with the song but it is cutting up the song on the video taking you out of the moment throwing in random clips, the album version is just a straight banger you can get into without the movie stuff chopping it up taking you out of a musical bless /rage w/e This song uncut gets me dangerously hyped.

    • @cnote3492

I am literally raging at this video, some of the greatest Rock riffs in history and you can't fully get into them because of some stupid F*****G movie plastered on top of it, I am so sorry you had to do this, you would have had a much better time with just the album song, this movie has nothing to do with the movie, it may have had some inspiration but the are decades apart, this was some video makers attempt to make art. To me to takes away from a song that was perfect as a banger and a message and the movie clips just cloud the experience taking you away from the music. I'm i never blew up on a video before, the reaction was great, you always nail it I just wish someone would have got you to listen to a cleaner version. Try it, you will really get to hear them playing their hearts out and not SOS frickin tin cans frickin blah blah blah just frickin great music start to finish.

This era in Rock music (heavy metal) was the peak of satanism from the rise of Rock n' roll & punk which hit hard during the 60's & 70's. Many serial killers listened to this noise before doing what they did, especially Richard Ramirez. Research on him on your own time if you'd like, he was a real one. I was a kid in those days & I remember he had most of L.A. worried because no one knew where he'd strike next. And L.A. was crazy bro, this guy took it to another level of being aware of your surroundings.
You're in a good path young man so I wouldn't recommend these types of groups & there were MANY, so Many.. At least Hip-Hop may have been a little full of mischief, but at least it wasn't 💯 ⬅️ evil. It was more fun & intellectual for the most part.
I wouldn't doubt that the majority of left winged politicians used to listen to "metal" which gave them their positions in Congress these days 🤣

@@williamhill6447 Dude. These lyrics and EVERY LYRIC in their albums are blasphemous. They mention God thousands of times in their music. And the samples in the backgrounds are for psychos with suicidal tendencies (which is another metal band btw) Anywho, I said serial killers like Richard Ramirez used to listen to Metallica before going on their killing sprees. I did not say Metallica was satanic, but their songs sure were influential for the murderers.
Btw, all those old school bands Metallica, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, AC/DC, Scorpions, Motorhead, Blue Oyster cult, Kiss, Rush, Venom, Twisted Sister, Warpig, iron claw, Angel witch.. the list goes on & on & on.. Nazareth? Lucifer's Friend? CMON MAN. How More Obvious Can It Be?!! 🤣 oh My.. dude please don't do any more feedback, please.. I just wanted to mention about the T-shirts representing these bands that all of you wore back then. Why were they in black, white & red colors. What do those 3 colors represent? I'm pretty sure you know, but I'd prefer if you wouldn't reply :) Thanks for your time.
